'Justice League' drama: How WB pissed off Chris Terrio and hired Joss Whedon (rumor)

Earlier today, it was announced that Geoff Johns was leaving his position at DC to start a new production company, Mad Ghost Productions. The good news for fans of Johns' work at DC is that his new company signed an exclusive deal with Warner Bros., so he'll be producing content for them across movies, TV, and comics, starting with Green Lantern Corps, which he's writing and producing.

But today's news sparked an interesting tweet from Vulture's senior editor, Kyle Buchanan. Johns played a big role in Justice League after the backlash that Batman v Superman received, and was said to have had contributed to the many script rewrites that took place throughout production. According to Buchanan, Justice League writer Chris Terrio was so frustrated that he would complain, "Maybe try using some of my pages?"

When Zack Snyder screened his cut of Justice League for Warner Bros. executives in early 2017, they still were not pleased with it. That's when Joss Whedon was brought in to rewrite the script for the reshoots. Buchanan claims to have insider info on how that came to be as well.

According to Buchanan, Warner Bros. held a Justice League footage summit for writers including Joss Whedon, Wonder Woman writer Allan Heinberg, Seth Grahame-Smith, and Andrea Berloff. Warner Bros. wanted feedback on how to improve Justice League, and obviously Whedon ended up winning the job.

Vulture is a reliable website and was even granted exclusive access to DC's Geoff Johns and Diane Nelson last year, but this should still be treated as a rumor for now until other reliable sources pitch in. It's not too hard to believe this is how things went down, though.

I don't know all the rules but you don't always get credit for some reason. Johns did a ton of work on the WW script too and didn't get credit.

  Rules are made in a way to protect the original screenwriter. Hollywood scripts get doctored all the time, especially those big algorithm-driven projects. Hence why those "doctors" don't get screenwriting credits. One has to greatly modify the story, à-la Whedon, to get one.
  So I'm guessing Terrio was tasked to re-write his own script (make a 2-part movie into 1), then Johns added his mods (one liners, dialogue changes, lightness, etc) all throughout production.

If Johns had an EP credit on the movie, then the WGA wouldn't let him have a writers credit unless he really wrote most of the entire thing. They have a rule against management (producers / EPs / directors) getting writing credit except in very specific cases ("Written and directed by," etc.) I believe, in cases like this where there were a lot of hands in the pot, the production team typically just leaves it up to the WGA arbitration process to decree what the writing credit shall be.

  Hum, not sure. Terrio has an Exec Producer credit on JL.
  It all boils down to protecting the original screenwriter, even if his script gets heavily doctored. If the story doesn't change much, the "doctor" will not get a credit. Happens all the time in Hollywood. Scripts get fine-tuned by committee. Terrio must have rewrote his own script, Johns messed with it.
  On the other hand, Whedon not only wrote new material, he changed the story massively. Same for Rogue One and Tony Gilroy.

Its very interesting that the ominous "Snyder cut" was actually already a rewritten version that was written by Johns. And if even that could not save the movie (Johns wrote Justice League comics for years for gods sake and wrote the much acclaimed Darkseid War) then something must have REALLY gone wrong.

It reminds me so much on the Green Lantern fiasco where so many writers rewrote that movie over and over that it just ended up being a total mess. 6 years later WB makes the same shit again. they just don't learn.

And this is the kind of mess you will NEVER have happen in the MCU. Kevin Feige would never let a gazillion writers literally rewrite a movie into a mess.

    Wow... He wrote Darkseid War and Blackest Night. He basiclly re-invented Aquaman and his work on expanding the Green Lantern Universe is so massive. In my opinion he should have a Pulitzer or Nobel Prize in litterature. Blackest Night/Brightest Day changed how I look at the DC Universe.

Feige and his team are confident in what they're doing. And they've never had a BvS-level backlash to have to overcome. The negative overreaction to BvS, caused WB to overreact. That's what you do when you don't REALLY believe in what you're doing.
It doesn't matter how much the Snyder cut allegedly sucked, you have to be able to gauge the overall quality of the script, before deciding that the movie is worthy of the greenlight. Not wait until post-production and butcher everything. Just winging it, and hoping that the director will always bail you out, isn't how you build a successful cinematic universe.

  This isn't me hating on Snyder here but after BvS and the backlash if WB were really that worried they should have sacked Snyder or at the very least reduced Snyder's role and delayed JL for another year and then get someone who can make a proper more "appealing" film what isn't just Whedon just re-doing Snyder's work.

      "Batman v Superman" and "Justice League" are two very interesting tales about where studio interference and a lack of studio interference failed.
      Based on what we have learned about the Zack Snyder cut of "Justice League", it's unquestionably true that the Snyder cut would have been much better. However, I'm willing to admit that "Batman v Superman" did a lot of damage to the DCEU. And there's a part of me that sorta kinda understands WB's desire "correct" some of the things that went wrong with BvS. But the problem is that they OVERCORRECTED! "Justice League" deserved a deeper and more complex story, whereas BvS could have been more simple and linear.

    Believe it or not, WB was okay with Man of Steel. They wanted to reboot Batman and get to Justice League, ASAP. And Zack Snyder gave them a way to do that. Remember, WB was way more interested in how much money they could make, not how well the movies would rate on Rotten Tomatoes.

You see the beauty of the MCU is that its made and ran by Marvel Studios a studio purposely designed to make the films and ran by people who actually care and give a shit, Disney may own Marvel but other then fund the films they don't get involved. With the DCEU though there is no DC Studios with a guy like Feige who has a master plan and is a big fan themselves, WB get too involved and let directors like Snyder have too much control (hence how we got BvS) or let the director have a lot of control and then hack up the film afterwards (SS and JL). Thankfully Wan and Jerkins don't seem to have this problem but i dread that one day they will do something that WB will worry about.

  I think, though, that WB never really wanted to create a universe as connected as the MCU; my hunch is that they didn't want to be viewed as the latecomers to the party by taking them head on with an essentially straightforward movie version of the DC Comics Universe, so instead they decided to differentiate by creating a loose structure around the IP and letting their filmmakers bring their visions of the characters to life. Imagine, in comics terms, letting Vertigo create their own mirror version of the DC Universe however the respective creative teams saw fit with very few restrictions from Burbank, and I think that's where they wanted to go with the movies. Honestly, BvS, even if the UC had been released in theaters, was never going to be a great date night movie, and in all likelihood it was never going to appeal to the majority of MCU fans. I certainly doubt that it is a movie that should be watched when high (I don't do weed so I can't say for sure). What bit WB was that they didn't get a critical mass of critics who were willing to say, "this is radically different from the MCU, it's really about the toll that heroism takes on the heroes rather than being about the heroes saving the world, and that's okay and if you're ready to rethink the comics you should see it."
  It took us comics fans decades to convince the GA that comics could be much more than juvenile entertainment for kids, but with books like TDKR and Watchmen and The Sandman and Cerebus and Love & Rockets and Maus we were able to do it to at least some extent. BvS was our chance to do the same with the comic book movie. Alas.

    I would say Nolan already did that with his Trilogy, after all The Dark Knight is the only superhero film to actually get some serious Oscar noms what aren't stuff like Visual Effects or Costume Design. Zack Snyder should have been allowed to finish his vision for the DCEU with free range. BvS UE should have been the cinematic cut, JL1 and 2 should have been Snyders cut. Alot of people would have liked Snyders 4 movies. Still not Disney magic but so much better than what we’ve got...

    It's hard to know exactly where things went wrong behind the scenes with the DCEU.
    I think about HALF of the blame for BvS's poor reception lies with the editor. I watched the theatrical cut the other day, and I saw A LOT of fat that could have been trimmed, which would have allowed more room for the extra stuff from the UC that helped it make more sense.
    I mean, seriously. Why cut out the part of Luthor's men burning the bodies in the African village? They way it was edited, it make it look like the bad guys' plan was to frame Superman for SHOOTING those men! And the subplot with the bat-branding made no sense in the theatrical cut. Like, really? Being branded by Batman makes you a target in prison?! I would think it would actually help you to gain sympathy from the other prisoners! Maybe even form a gang of prisoners vowing to get their revenge on Batman, you know?
    I agree with you that the "Ultimate Cut" of BvS is better, but it's still 3 hours long. You're already pushing it with general audiences at 2.5 hours (which I think was the length of the theatrical cut). I know there are many exceptions to that, but still...IN GENERAL, the attention span of general audiences begins to wane after that time.
    Regardless of who's to blame, BvS unquestionably did damage to the DCEU. Which is why I understand WB's desire to "correct" some of the things that were criticized in BvS (even though I agree that the Zack Snyder cut would have been much better, based on what we've learned about it). The problem is that WB overcorrected! BvS could have been better with a more simple and linear story, whereas Justice League deserved something deeper and maybe more complex. But Warner Bros said "Whoops! Can't have that!"
    I also feel like their decision to "correct" the dark tone was pointless. DC is just more dark than Marvel. It's what sets those two universes apart! I think their desire to "correct the dark tone" was most overdone in "Suicide Squad".

I don't think the original movie was the real problem (I'm not saying it was perfect) but the despair of WB to get some easy money before 2018 to impress the AT&T. They know the Snyder vision is not common and they wanted the common last year. WW was the original idea because Patty was being very strong in the studio. Snyder couldn't be that strong because of the bad moment he was living.

  Man of Steel is first successfull Superman movie since Superman II. Was so good that even main guy from Rotten Tomatoes wondered why critics shat at it.
  BvS (even in it's botched theatrical version which I myself personally dislike) is still highest grossing DCEU movie to date, depsite all bad press it had since very announce at comic-con.
  Neither of those had reshoots, all done under budget.
  Add to that Skwad was success (that WB even consider to do solo with Leto's Joker) and even won Oscar making DCEU first comic book based shared universe ever recieved one.
  Wonder Woman (of which Snyder was producer (as well as producer of sequel) and co-writer of the Story).
  While Johns on his hand has one failed attempt to cash on MCU success using MCU means which is Green Lantern, and another which is Justice League.
  So no, Snyder isn't problem and never was.

  Nobody really doubts his comic book writing talent. The concern is whether or not he can sell WB on his vision, and have a real impact on the films. What was up with that Batman script he was working on with Affleck? If it was good enough, then why was Matt Reeves hired to come in and start from scratch? Why wasn't he able to take Chris Terrio's script, and add some of his best Justice League vs. Darkseid ideas to it?

      Well i expect with Reeves it was either i do it my way or i don't do it all. Also worth pointing out both Johns and Affleck were writing The Batman, with Affleck leaving maybe it was for the best Johns left as well and because of that it just made sense for Reeves to do his thing especially when he's proved himself over the years with this type of thing.

  There's a difference between writing comics and writing films. Marvel and DC have good comic book writers, but there's a reason why you don't see any of those same writers doing any live-action films for either brand.
  Take Simon Wells for example. He's directed a lot of animated films, and so he tried his hand in directing his first live-action film , The Time Machine. In the middle of production, Wells unfortunately realized that directing live-action is a beast that he wasn't prepared for and suffered a nervous breakdown in the process. He had to drop out and let someone else finish the film for him.

Thing is Johns has yet to be giving a chance to prove himself, GL and JL weren't his films and he was just adding to someones else work. GLC will be the chance to prove himself properly.
Also funny how the people bitching about Johns are the people who don't really follow comics or his work. Been on the DC sub Reddit for most of the night and my god the difference there to this site is so different, its really friendly, there's no bullshit, no fanboys (in fact because its a more comic book focused group they don't actually like BvS that much like most DC comic readers) and best of all they don't shit on the people who shoudn't be shat on, the news surrounding Johns today has been met on there with hype and happiness. Come on here though and most of the Snyder fanbase are bitching about Johns because everyone else is to blame apart from Snyder.

  emm, I visit often the DC Cinematic reddit and I see many posts talking positively about Snyder and his movies and in a very friendly environment too. And you know that I'm a DC reader and I love BvS UC ;)

      haven't visited the site since yesterday so I don't know, last thing I saw was all those memes saying "if Whedon had directed (insert movie)". Some of them are quite good to be honest and the conversations are just about getting fun, don't see too much vitriol spilt there (unlike when another director is mentioned on this site for example...)

      And while I don't dislike Johns, I am skeptical of him. His comic book work is almost irrelevant when he hasn't really anything. Yeah he he helped write WW, but how much of his input was on the final draft? He's supposedly gettign a writing credit on Aquaman, so we'll see if he delivers on that. I just think people are too many eggs on this one basket.

Doesn't mean much considering how shit SW has been since Disney took over. The director of TLJ has made some classics like Looper and some of the best Breaking Bad episodes yet that didn't stop TLJ from being the worst SW film of them all. Terrio wrote BvS at the end of the day and the script for that sucked.

      BvS Ultimate Edition is good. Has more than a few liberties but is way way way better than Justice league. It an enjoyable film, same as TLJ. I didn't see how TLJ destroyed any characters.

I'm skeptical since if he was really the one who fucked up on JL, WB giving him a potential tentpole like Green Lantern Corps is a very wise decision. Not to mention him still being involved in the production on Wonder Woman 2.

Admittedly, they did give the BVS creative team another chance, so maybe that's just their thing.

An assumption that goes unchallenged around the internet is that WB had a gun to Joss’ head and ordered him to do everything he did. What’s much more likely, and much more the way these things work, is what this implies. Joss came in and announced that he knew the Marvel formula and he was going to turn Justice League into a billion-dollar movie using his approach that Marvel loved (even though his forced-humor style was controversial at Marvel too). And they gave Joss the mission. Then Joss went Colonel Kurtz on them, and his methods became unsound, and by the time WB realized that Joss’ approach wasn’t going to work it was too late to send Martin Sheen up the river to put a stop to him.

If true, I wouldn't be surprised. It should probably come as no coincidence that Terrio didn't do really ANY interviews regarding JL post-BvS. It also would explain why even the alleged "Snyder Cut" would probably still not be Snyder's "true" vision as well seeing as how much it was meddled with even before production began.

Terrio had previously spoken about how JL's tone would be much "lighter" than BvS akin to how Return of the Jedi was lighter than Empire, but it's probable it wasn't meant to include that many quippy one-liners that were present even in the earliest trailers (the comic con preview from 2016 had a drastically different tone than BvS). It would also explain why there are conflicting reports about the black suited Superman too. In the final movie, it was completely absent, but even in the alleged Snyder Cut, the black suit makes a mere "cameo" in light of the fact that Snyder, lover of replicating comic book imagery, would have likely "jumped" at the chance to include it.

There was even that interview he did during the JL set visit where he teased Superman's hair would be "longer". And then there's that black suit concept art that popped up in the blu-ray special features, so... Yeah.

What a shame.

I just remember being on the other side of fandom whenever Joss Whedon's name came up. Before and after Avengers he was held up so high. I hated all his work including Buffy. I was really knocked around a bit online, voicing how over-rated his writing in Avengers was when it came out.
Has anyone tried to re-watch that film recently? I bet you cant. I didn't hold up very well.
Its just funny how those same people that praised he could do no wrong after Avengers are the ones today calling him a hack because of JL. I also believe AoU is the worst CBM in history.

I like the Avengers movies. I like most Marvel movies for what they are. They're entertaining on a very shallow level, like Happy Meals from McDonalds: you eat them, they provide you salts and sugars and make you happy but you've forgotten about the meal by the time you get to your car. No nutritional value. But people LOVE Happy Meals! They're worth the money and as long as you diversify your diet, you're fine.
However, you'll never ever see a Marvel Studios movie in a "Best Film" list of any artistic importance. That being said, it's never been a better time to be a comic book nerd. The movies we get now are insane.

  They're kind of disposable entertainment. You watch it, like it, tell others you liked it and then forget about it... until the next Marvel movie that tingles those "Salts and sugars" sensations in your brain.
  I really liked Infinity War, but if you look at the movie, Thanos, Gamora, Quill and maybe Stark are really the only characters in the movie. Everyone else are just props that say the occasional line. lol
  I loved Ragnarok for a few really neat scenes, but there's no real meat to it. There's nothing to remember. It's not like when you watch Die Hard or Lethal Weapon or the original Star Wars or The Shining or Nosferatu. There's nothing that stays with you beyond that fleeting feeling that you enjoyed the last one so you should go see the next.

BVS was a film ahead of it's time IMO. It's style was beautifully shot (Larry Fong is the best in the business) but also polarizing and had a lot of story to tell that got butchered in the theatrical release making characters act erratic and/or created plot holes (The UE @ 3 hrs long addresses most of these issues - one of my top 5 comic book films). With the casting of Eisenberg as a jittery/over caffeinated, Lex Luther, and a Superman who's character was absent from most of the theatrical cut, the final nail in the coffin for any actual hope of something to attract goodwill to the future films of the DCEU.

Compound these issues w SS problems w post production tinkering that was made very public and showed in theaters. Looking back in retrospect they should of released SS before BVS and had Batman acted more of a creature figure in the shadows and all from the villian's perspective (almost scary demon chasing after them - mythical in their memories of him showing how they were captured - really help build up his character before BVS). That way a stunt double could have done most of the acting and Ben Affleck would only be needed for close ups and maybe a post credit scene as Bruce Wayne as a big reveal. Remove the villian and replace her w the Joker as a dueling heist film to help ground the film a bit more and I think the DCEU could have blossomed much better.

Instead flash forward to JL and we are now doubling down on these issues (2 hr time mandate) and are simplifying the plot to mid 1990's levels of comic book story telling in cinema and CGI (think of The Shadow, The Phantom, Batman Forever).

Still hoping that at some point Snyder can foot the bill w his production company Cruel and Unusual and release his version (or as close to it as possible) so that we can actually see what his true plans were instead of the small tid-bits he keeps sharing on Vero.

If the version that made it the screen was better than the Johns version, that’s saying a lot considering how bad the Whedon version was. Whedon is easily one of the most overrated writers around and his dialogue is absolutely cringeworthy. But the real problem with BvS was its director.
