Vuture published a big article today about the future of the DC Extended Universe which includes interviews with DC Films president Geoff Johns and DC Entertainment president Diane Nelson.
The biggest piece of news is that Warner Bros. is going to deemphasize the idea of a shared universe. The idea won't be scrapped completely, but expect movies to feel more standalone like Wonder Woman going forward.
"Our intention, certainly, moving forward is using the continuity to help make sure nothing is diverging in a way that doesn’t make sense, but there’s no insistence upon an overall story line or interconnectivity in that universe,” Nelson said, drawing nods from the top brass around her.
“The movie’s not about another movie,” Johns said about Wonder Woman. “Some of the movies do connect the characters together, like Justice League. But, like with Aquaman, our goal is not to connect Aquaman to every movie.” As Nelson put it, “Moving forward, you’ll see the DC movie universe being a universe, but one that comes from the heart of the filmmaker who’s creating them.”
Geoff Johns confirmed the news that Warner Bros. and DC are working on a brand of movies that are separate from the DC Extended Universe brand. The first movie under that new brand will be about The Joker. Johns confirmed that fans will learn the name of this new brand "soon-ish".
Vulture also has some details from a time where Geoff Johns didn't have the kind of influence he does today as DC Films president.
“Geoff Johns and Diane were reading scripts, and Geoff Johns, to his credit, was concerned that there was not enough lightness or humor, given who the character is,” recalled one person with knowledge of the making of Man of Steel. “Geoff definitely raised that point, but that current administration didn’t care that much about what Geoff Johns thought.”
Now, Warner Bros. trusts Johns along with Jon Berg to run their entire DC movie division.
Speaking of Johns and Berg, they were the ones who brought Joss Whedon in to write new scenes for Justice League after they had a successful meeting with him about writing and directing Batgirl.
“Everyone was excited about Joss being a part of DC, and we thought he’d be great to write the [Justice League] scenes, the additional-photography scenes that we wanted to get,” Johns recalled.
Finally, Johns addressed the rumors about all of the movies we hear about that Warner Bros. is working on and criticism that they don't have a plan.
“Some of the stuff is true, some of it isn’t true,” he said. “When we talk about things or we’re making deals for people to develop scripts or whatever, sometimes, things leak; sometimes, things are misreported, and it’s frustrating. Because we do wanna go out there and talk about what our strategy is, and this stuff just muddies the water. There’s a lot of internal conversations going on about, 'How do we help kind of clean that up a bit?'”
