Zack Snyder shares 'Justice League' Flash costume test, talks scrapped 2nd costume

Justice League director Zack Snyder shared a photo of Ezra Miller as The Flash from his first costume test for the movie.

"[Throwback Thursday] to first Flash costume test," Snyder caption the photo above on Vero. He also talked about plans for a second costume for The Flash that ended up being scrapped.

Snyder confirmed to a fan that there were plans to give The Flash a new costume at the end of Justice League. Bruce Wayne would've given him an upgraded version with "Wayne tech" implemented. However, Snyder said he ultimately decided not to move forward with that scene because he wanted to give The Flash solo movie director a chance to put their own spin on a costume.

  I love the JL Batman cowl. It's more Jim Lee Batman than Frank Miller. But I also Really hate how Batman can't turn his head.
  That's one way you can tell the Snyder shots from the Whedon shots - Whedon re-used the BvS cowl where Bats could turn his head while Snyder had the new redesigned JL cowl where he couldn't.
  Apparently, it was because the company that designed the BvS cowl didn't return for JL and being on a tight schedule, the new company that stepped it couldn't get the aesthetics right before principal photography began, so they just opted to go with the old stiff neck Bats mask cause it was cheaper and faster to create.

      It wasn't though. The cowl he wore in the reshoots was less form fitting (due to Batfleck gaining a pudge) and you could tell that the neck area folded and wrinkled considerably everytime he turned his head. It also had a different set of "bat ears" that was more reminiscent of BvS than JL.
      And while I overexaggerated saying that Whedon just recycled the Bat cowl from BvS (in that it wasn't the exact same one), it's proportions and design was more reminiscent of it than the JL cowl Snyder shot with.

    well you can’t go all “josh Frank” and bite the hand that feeds you. But Ayer did have his movie butchered by having to make a funnier cut of the film that was edited by the trailer company that made the bohemian rhapsody trailer. I will rewatch the “I started a joke” trailer and think of what could have been instead of rewatching Suicide Squad. Movie should have been more Fury and less Bright.

      Ayer def got his movie butchered to death. Didn’t the studio come in and reshoot abunch of shit or they added in some stuff to lighten the mode even more and they did this without Ayer even knowing what’s up? I know they def did something fucked up like that

        after the popularity of the bohemian rhapsody trailer combined with the negative response to bvs, the studio freaked out (and continued to in JL). there were extensive reshoots with Ayer likening it to the studio giving him more toys to play with but that was just spin for “they are making me change the movie”. supposedly there were two competing cuts of the movie... a more somber and grim version (like the first trailer) and a more lighthearted one... ultimately the studio went with the ladder. this left most of the joker material on the cutting room floor since the relationship with Harley was pegged as an abusive one but instead changed to the joker being a love puppy of sorts. the studio was so enamored with the response to the bohemian rhapsody cut that they got the trailer company who made that trailer to cut and edit the actual movie itself... which is why some sequences are literally the EXACT same as the bohemian rhapsody trailer. so disappointing...

For me, the worst part of JL. The Flash. Especially that 'run' at the end. The suit didnt work either.
That background is part of what makes critics everywhere place their hands to face in horror at DC.

    Nah even that was wrong. The costume design for her civilian clothes throughout the film was atrocious. They also kept treating her like a piece of meat in the film, something that the two previous films definitely didn't do.

      As for "screwed up," no. It was *necessary* for a world in which superheroes don't exist on a globally recognized scale before MoS for WW to have lain low all this time. Plus it provided her with a nice little character arc to boot, so it's a good thing, most definitely.

        not really, you could have made WW origins in the present and not in the past. BvS established she has been around for along time. could have easily had Steve Trevor be a modern day spy sent on a mission since the world learned Superman existed and then Steve finds Diana. However, those in charge (Zack and Chris writing the script along with Goyer) went with a WW that is centuries old.

        They may have wrote it but Snyder approved it, he had full control over that film and worked on every part of it including the script.
        No it wasn't necessary especially when it creates problems for the prequel films, she had a full round arc in WW yet that got messed up when you realize she didn't help in any future war or events like WW2. JL badly explained that away but we know that didn't come from Snyder's cut and was clearly added to fix the mess that line caused in BvS.

She could have been hiding in the shadows but not revealing herself to the public, all these years, and considwring the fact that snyder was developing wonder woman along with bvs., and he wrote the story, it seems that line does fit that story, considering that ending.

        It didn't get messed up. She realized that people have both good and bad in them, and that there's nothing that will ultimately stop these wars, which fits nicely with the idea of her laying low.

        Snyder was granted the right to reinvent DC characters, Man of Steel and BvS was a reboot approved by WB and DC, and for some people it worked, I prefer Snyder's version than anyother, although the DC rebirth version is nicer (but that's an older established Supes), and I hope Bendis keeps it similar and not cheesy. JL, I don't know what to think of it, I'd have prefer the Snyder version instead of the Whedon one, but i liked the costume designs for sure.

        I know, and I generally hate when people say that, but I genuinely cannot see how someone can fully understand Batman’s psyche and backstory and what his parents mean to him, and think that scene is just stupid and funny and such... I cannot fathom such a thing... There has to be a line drawn somewhere. Like someone can’t be a Christian if they don’t claim to follow the teachings of Jesus.

        I personally dont have a problem with this seen, i get the idea behind it and all, but its definitely not a good scene like you claim it is. After watching 2 hours of batman ready to kill superman by any means necessary, and for it to end like this was pretty lazy i think, people expected something way better, and i have a few ideas on how it should've went. Same thing when superman died, i know you cried, but i didnt feel nothing at all, which is weird because i like MOS, but he was unlikable in BVS and it was too early to kill him off, i guess that ruined it for me imo(dont kill me).

        First, I apologize for the length, but I am longwinded, and you said a lot of interesting points that deserve in-depth responses, and I especially appreciate your respect in this discussion, so I don't want to just brush off your issues with the film, because they have real value.
        All I'm claiming is I struggle to imagine a real Batman fan could "misunderstand this [scene] so severely and unforgivingly." Having some problems with it, sure. There's gonna be slightly different opinions of everything ever. But thinking it is nothing more than a stupid joke as some do simply spits in the face of what Batman as a person is all about, whether the scene was that good or not, and that's where I'm drawing the line. Or maybe I'm getting too emotional; that's possible. But that's why I keep you around to check me every once in awhile in case I need to recant :P
        Ready to kill an *alien* by any means necessary. Then he was humanized. That's the beauty of the scene. Well, one of the beauties :P It certainly wasn't lazy! It was ingenious. I remember when that scene happened my mind was blown, because it all linked back in integral ways to Batman's character and brought his arc full circle. When that's accomplished, that's GOOD writing, plain and simple. And seeing him in the exact same position as Joe Chill was, well, chilling! That's when the emotions really hit me hard, when he sees what he has become, and I can't imagine that not being a powerful moment to anyone who is familiar with Batman's story.
        As for people's expectations, I don't remember if you were on this site during the buildup to BvS's release or not, and I wasn't, but I sure was regularly reading the comments, haha, and I can tell you, from the day it was first announced, the only thing people were expecting was predictability - everyone was sure the plot was gonna be Batman and Superman fight, but then they have to stop fighting and team up to fight a bigger threat (Metallo, which morphed into Doomsday once he was revealed), with the addition of Wonder Woman being the peacemaker between the two to get them to fight together once she was announced. So, for me, it came as a HUGE RELIEF that they thought of something so much more creative than what we were all thinking would be bound to happen and, more important than that, something so much more substantive and personally close to the characters themselves.
        Now who are you to judge that it is definitively, factually, objectively “too soon," or to judge the ending of the fight based on what ideas YOU had for it to end? I don't ask this to be snarky, but to encourage you to think about the point I'm making here, 'cause this is another one of the biggest problems the movie faces that I have been preaching since day one: its unexpectedness flying in the face of some people’s unchecked preconceived notions. However, this is not a flaw of the movie, but of its audience.
        The movie is certainly not what anyone was expecting in many ways, seeing as - I would argue - it challenged the nature of the superhero movie genre as a whole, made a movie far beyond (or at least different, as you might say instead) what we had experienced before, and how it simply did not fit with the many preconceived notions, preferences, and ideas that naturally come to everyone's minds when such a title as "Batman v Superman" is uttered.
        Such an emotive, popular, and provocative concept and all the rumors connected to it bring up thoughts of how such a story should and has played out in comics, cartoons, and video games from before - it should have this tone, there should be this many brawls, they should fight for this specific reason, the fight should happen this particular way, these exact lines should be spoken, they should stop fighting for this reason, these characters should have these exact roles in the story, etc. - all simple and straightforward opinions and biases that, when ignored as they properly should be when viewing ANY movie not made by oneself, have zero bearing on the objective enjoyment of the quality of the story that IS, and not what was simply in one's mind.
        None of these concepts are mandatory to such a movie and do not affect the actual quality of what could in fact be just as good or better ways for the story to go; they are simply baseless, unnecessary expectations that naturally arise that, when left unchecked, can make the viewing experience bad simply because the movie is DIFFERENT, having nothing to do with its actual quality.
        I know from experience that the further I moved away from my preferences and preconceived notions, the more I realized how actually great the movie was. The ideas in my head actually did make for an off-putting and distracted or disappointed viewing experience in some areas before I managed to let go of them and let the movie absorb me with ITS story, not my own. One must judge a movie on the movie itself, nothing else.
        And I can assure you, Superman's death was absolutely necessary to this story for him to ever become accepted by the world. And you definitely should have been expecting it when they released the trailer with Doomsday in it :P
        Finally, a question: you thought he was unlikable in BvS, but liked MoS? That's odd. Did you try the Ultimate Edition?

        Here's the thing, for you to get where im coming from you have to go all the way back on this new/old take on Batman. In BVS, he was out of the norm and abandoned his righteous path, which is fine! But we dont know anything about this Batman, we haven't been on a journey with him nor witnessed his pain and frustration. We've seen bruce parents get murdered 1000 times already, wether its in comics or movies, so the shock value doesnt have the same effect it once had. Thats why i think that it was imperative to see the murder of robin,so the audience could relate to him a bit more. Now, the fact that he wants to kill superman by any means necessary is beyond stupid, even though he's been manipulated by Lex, Batman is a real calculating individual(even though he lost his ways)he would investigate on superman regardless. Also, why is Joker still alive after killing robin? or any other villains for that matter? He clearly doesn't have any problem with killing thugs right? Fast forward to the BVS fight, he spares supermans life because he saw his humanity etc. I feel that this scene should've been longer to work properly, it happened too fast and there wasnt enough dialogue(Due to doomsday of course, which i thought was a mistake as well.)
        Now Superman. The reason why it was "too soon" is because were still getting to know him, and people weren't completely sold with this iteration yet. He was still trying to find his path, he didnt have time to build a relationship with batman or wonder woman, it was bad for JL promo, and it takes the stake away from future dceu movies. Killing him when hes loved by everyone would have a much bigger impact, i simply didnt care, and he's my favorite superhero.

Always hated the costume with such a passion. Flash should not wear armor. They had a chance to give him an awesome faithful comic book costume as they did with Batman, Superman and WW and instead they made him look like a goddamn Power Ranger. What I hated the most about the suit were all those damn cables that made Barry look like a bondage fetishist. Just terrible.
while not quite perfect the current TV Flash costume is by far the best live action Flash suit yet.
And while Ezra Miller is adorable and fun in the role, his portrayal is a complete disservice to the character. He never comes across as Barry Allen. the Flash is not a nerdy kid. They wrote him to be like Spider-Man to Bruce waynes Tony Stark but this just does not work. he should be a grown up CSI who is the smartest guy in the room, seeing the clues and bonding with Batman over science.
On subsequent viewings I actually really enjoy Justice League as a fun, carefree superhero team up movie and the movie plays a lot like a cool comic book event. Its a feel good movie and once you leave giant expectations at the door for it to be as big, grand, epic and world shattering as Avengers or as dark and heavy as BvS then a lot of fun is to be had with JL.
But as a big Flash fan, Ezras portrayal and look is the one thing that sticks out like a sore thumb when the JL is together. Superman, WW and even the over the top hardcore Aquaman and the softened, less cynical Batman look perfect and mesh well together. I gotta say I even really like Ray Fishers Cyborg a whole lot more then I ever liked the character in the comics.
But why, why did they have to get Flash so wrong when they got others so right ? It makes me mad because of the oppertunity they had here to give us a perfect live action Flash and all we get is a speedster kid with a terrible costume and much worse CGI animation then the CW Flash.

But I can accept it as it is a homemade costume that Barry made by materials he found here and there. So, I assume he will get his official one in his own movie with the help of Bruce Wayne.

  I don’t know a whole lot about the Flash compared to Batman, but I’m pretty sure Barry has in fact been pretty consistently portrayed as a bit nerdy, what with his “Flash Facts” and reading comics and such. As for his suit, it is very faithful, actually, just simply translated into a realistic version of that. Look at TDK Trilogy Batsuits; they were realistic translations that didn’t make nearly as much effort to remain faithful to the original look. Flash’s suit has the symbol, the red, and random gold highlights, etc. Yet I can’t imagine you all complained this much when TDK Trilogy came out.

As for the suit well no it isn't faithful at all, he looks more like a budget Power Ranger then The Flash, there's actually a logical and justified reason for why his suit is like it is in the comics so its a shame Snyder just went with Power Rangers look, even the CW suit beats the films sadly.

End of the day the suit sucks and pretty much every Flash fan i've seen agree's with that, between the lack of any decent showing for the character's powers, terrible costume and a Barry what felt nothing like Barry or any of the other Flash's it was a poor time being Flash fan when watching it.

        That "suit in a ring" is explained all the time in the comics on how and why it works, yes the science isn't are science but they explain it and it works.
        As for the speed force well before Wally the Speed Force didn't exist in comics, it was something added in the 90's by Waid on his Wally to deepen the Flash mythology and explain away somethings. Barry didn't know about the speed force until he died (what's explained in his return and throughout Waid's Wally's run) and when he was in his prime in his return. So basically he doesn't need to know anything about the speed force to do the stuff he does.

        How was he OP? He done fuck all beyond run on a wall to give Diana her Sword and save a family.         Even with an explanation, the suit in a ring is too ridiculous. At least with GL, they tell that his suit is made entirely out of energy, and even both JL and GL made the suit look like it wasn't composed of everyday materials.

Hence, why another song was played during his big scene in Apocalypse and I guarantee that they will play another song for him in Dark Phoenix.
        And Quicksilver had two big scenes from TWO films combined.

        I can suspend my disbelief for a person born on another planet with a much weaker sun, harsher atmosphere, and stronger gravitational force than our own and photosynthetic physiological properties developing enhanced physical traits and properties allowing for the manipulation of electromagnetic fields in order to help defy gravity much more easily than I can for some guy who just started superhero-ing and hasn’t fully explored his powers yet being able to magically create a suit around his body using a poorly defined metaphysical “force” or doing something as stupidly cheesy as stuffing that suit in a ring.

        I’m quite sure it’s entirely impossible by the laws of nature to fit a full body suit into a ring, regardless of the chemicals or folding or gasses you might use. But not even talking about scientific possibility here, that’s still just plain cheesy. It’s not a very realistically practical option, and it does not make a lot of sense for the character. So no, I would argue it is neither more possible nor more likely than a superpowered alien coming to Earth, and thus not more believable. And Cyborg again, really? He’s pretty realistic as far as these characters go, lol. But ultimately I’m not talking about LIKELIHOOD; I’m talking about POSSIBILITY. Nothing in fiction is LIKELY to happen, otherwise it wouldn’t make an exciting story and we wouldn’t bother reading it. Fiction is all about exploring the UNLIKELY occurrences. But that’s not the same as being impossible. Superman, from what I understand, while of course incredibly unlikely, is theoretically possible to some degree. More outlandish things happening in comics and cartoons is one thing, but why not capitalize on the more realistic aspects of these characters in the live action medium when it is so apt for it? I believe most all these characters can have great stories and be faithful to the spirit of their comics while still being told on a more realistic way. I thoroughly enjoyed the immersiveness I got from that as it was executed in TDK Trilogy and MoS, and I would love to see it continue.

Why don't you do some research into this, the suit shrinks when it goes into the suit and expands due to the air when out of it, the suit isn't made up of basic everyday materials and is designed to protect Barry when running and then shrink and fit inside the ring. This type of thing isn't in the realms of bullshit and is possible in the real world but on a much smaller scale, hell clothes when wet or heated can expand or shrink so right there is some of the bases the writers used for the ring.
        You clearly don't read or know much about Flash here and your completely unaware that despite the super powers and time travel and or that Flash is based and deals with a lot of real life science and logic. Hell the science surrounding Flash and his world is more logical and factual then a lot of the stuff Batman deals with.
        As for "cheesy" well stop supporting DC beyond modern day Batman and what ever edgy shit the N52 put out because "cheesy" and "out there" is DC and has been for many decades. You want more realism then go and support Marvel as that's what they base themselves more on.

The only way you could accomplish that would have to be some kinda transdimensional storage or something. But I will try to research it further in case there's any chance some kind of material could be shrunk that small, but I'm really doubtful. Something the size of a human body becoming the size of a pin head is hard enough to imagine on its own without also factoring in the instantaneous nature of its constantly shrinking and expanding.
        Again, I am definitely not claiming expertise on the Flash by any means, but I would definitely say I know *enough* to rule out ring storage as being more realistic than simply keeping a suit in a room, like most people, lol. What makes you say that I clearly don't know anything about him?

Technological advancements and extraterrestrial life are very real concepts that are very seriously discussed and predicted and theorized about regularly in scientific fields. Do you honestly not know about the very real fields of cybernetics and robotics? We already have these things in primitive forms today. It is entirely conceivable - and in fact potentially even EXPECTED - that an alien civilization advanced enough to be capable of interstellar travel would surely be able to make cybernetics that could perform much more technologically superior functions than what we currently have developed on Earth. I mean, we already hack into computers and fly planes; why can't Cyborg? I'm beginning to think you don't have as much understanding as you are claiming.
        If they could explain it well enough, sure. I'm down for just about anything as long as it works well with the story and can be explained fairly solidly. I very much doubt a ring would be capable of that, however, due to the lack of practicality and sense, especially when considering how early he is in his career in this universe and the fact that he could literally just store it in a room like normal person and the materials preventing any such thing from happening even if it was possible. And as for a magical "force" creating clothes, I struggle to imagine how that could be explained well. For now, I'm happy with the much easier-to-swallow and well-thought-out explanation JL has provided us of his suit being made from materials from NASA.

      Even the Barry from that godawful CW show when he first appeared in Arrow pre-Flash solo series was a nerdy, awkward and stuttering kid. He was smart, but he was definitely not what you'd call a stud.
      And when you're a genius, you tend to come off as awkward anyways, especially when you're young. It's why plenty of high-intellect kids are often targets of bullying or ostracizing because they're socially awkward.
      Lastly, I think it's also clear that there really isn't a live-action portrayal of Barry Allen that wasn't an amalgam of some or all of the various Flash incarnations. The DCEU Flash puts traits of Wally and Bart at the forefront as he acts very much like "Kid Flash" than the more mature elements of Barry or Jay Garrick. The CW show has clearly made their Barry kinda similar, especially in Season 1 when he was still learning the ropes.
      And then we have Smallville, which literally spelled out their intentions by having their Flash (who was Bart) adopt ALL the Flash names as false identities, while retaining very little of any one of them in particular as his personality.

        I completely disagree about the CW shows. While Season 1 of Flash was great, the rest have absolutely sucked and fell into the same trap Arrow, Supergirl, Smallville and all the other CW shows tumbled into which is the overabundance of stupid, ridiculously annoying melodrama and soap-opera romances. I'd rather watch the DCEU on loop for the rest of my life than sit through any of those shows ever again.
        And as for the suit, it's the same leather-jacket esque fetish the CW has had since Smallville. While the suit has been improved over time, it still looks ridiculous to me and I much prefer the DCEU version.

      The suit is. I've seen enough pictures; I can tell. Just as the Arkham Knight Batsuit was a faithful depiction of the comics through a realistic lens, so is the Flash's suit in JL - the biggest divergence is honestly the lack of gold boots, but there's no way that'll ever make it into anything outside the comics, which I would argue is an improvement visually to the design.
      The JL suit has a reason to look that way, too - it's NASA materials cobbled together into a superhero costume so that he can actually use his powers and not burn up his clothes.

  Hatred is not good for your health, friend. I think, like others pointed out, it's just a prototype from what/e materials Flash could offered at the time. Batman himself notes that it is constructed from the same silica-based quartz fabric employed by NASA to protect spaceships during re-entry. That should tell you, the creators thought about the science behind the suit. Perhaps in Flash's solo film, with the help of Batman, they constructed a new suit "faithful" to the comics that'll still protect him from the immense friction encountered when he runs. Cheer up. I mean, one of my fav. hero of all time is Superman, & his Doomsday/Return of Superman arc was wasted away in BvS:DoJ. I think if any one should be upset, it's the Bat fans since, well, you saw how he was portrayed in Justice League, not very Batman-like, at least not to me.

  I like it too. Most of the Injustice suits were iffy to me, but I actually liked the Flash's armored suit, so I was happy to see it adapted for JL.

        Difference is we didn't have to look at those for most of the runtime. Iron Man's prototype suit was gone by the end of Act 1. Ditto for Spider-Man. Peter Parker only dons his homemade suit in the final act of Homecoming. They all started off in something ratty and homemade before upgrading to something more professional looking and aesthetically pleasing.
        By contrast, you had Fan4tastic, where the characters were all un ugly-ass black leather/tactical gear, which people derided and made fun of as well. They were meant to be a prelude to the team finally getting their iconic blue costumes in the sequel, which LOL, not unlike giving Flash a shit costume in Justice League on the assumption someone would make a better design for him in his spin-off.
        If they'd had Bruce give Flash a better looking suit halfway through the movie there probably wouldn't be as much dunking on the suit, but here we are.

        No, that's splitting hairs. There's a big difference between a prototype suit that lasts for 20 min and is replaced by the right one in the same movie and a suit that lasts an entire movie. Yes, people made a huge fuss over Captain Marvel's suit. Remy's Spider-Man only had his first crap suit for 15 min of the movie. But you have the gall to tell people to accept a shit suit that lasts an entire movie. Why should anyone? "Yeah, it's crappy intentionally, don't worry, in the next movie, that will come out God knows when, if it ever does, it will be ditched for a good one."
        And I'll throw this one right back at you -- the only reason you're defining the suit is because you're on a mission and Snyder's dick is too sacred to stop stroking.

        No, it's entirely on the execs. They should have known better than last minute completely changing a movie when it's almost ready for theaters. Stuck to their guns and there would have been better reception. Even BvS's negative reception was largely on them, due to the forced cuts.

        The movie would've been better received, but not by much. There isnt that big of a difference between the two, to go from hating the movie, to loving it is pretty rare. The box office would definitely take a big hit as well.

    I actually like this better than the Injustice suit. That one looked a little too much like literal armor (which fits the apocalyptic fighting game vibe, of course). This looks like it was designed as a DIY out of materials built for this purpose for a superhero suit, so pretty perfect concept. But yeah, the inspiration is definitely there.

But the fact to the matter is that Zack Snyder has been minding his own business ever since he left the Justice League movie's production and has been kind enough to answer questions about what he had been working on to the people who feel themselves to have been robbed by the Warner Bros. studio and Joss Whedon's reshoots.     To be fair that is not a valid argument.
    By the time of the first Avengers most of the Avengers had not even met each other before in any of the films. The first meeting of Tony and Steve happened in Avengers. Same with Tony and Steve meeting Banner and Hawkeye. Thor had not met any of the others before Avengers. It still worked perfectly. You don't need an established history between the characters before you can team them up. After all in the current comics the Justice League also was formed after the heroes had only just met for the first time.

Hopefully this means they still plan to give Flash a new costume in his own movie. I liked Wilkinson's Batman, Wonder Woman and Aquaman costumes, but thought Flash looked TERRIBLE in Justice League.

That very idea of Bruce making a suit for a Flash with Wayne Tech technology is so stupid. Barry makes his own costume. Always has. He just uses certain chemicals and fabrics to make the suit able to fold itself down to a small enough size that he can put it in the Flash ring. In Flashpoint he made his suit from chemicals and fabrics in Thomas Waynes manor in a matter of seconds. No Wayne Tech needed.

  To be fair, Flashpoint Barry is gobs more experienced than the JL film's Barry. Maybe he'll devise all that a little later.
  I look at the WayneTech idea like I look at the organic web shooters in Raimi's Spider-Man movies: I prefer the OG web shooters and think Peter designing them himself is part of the character's legacy, but I also dig the creative twist and can appreciate it in it's own way.
