'Avengers: Infinity War' VFX company to work on 'Aquaman'

If you liked the visual effects in recent movies like Avengers: Infinity War, Black Panther, or Ready Player One, then you'll be happy to know that the same company is also working on Aquaman.

Industrial Light & Magic has added Aquaman to the "In Production" section of their website. Other projects they recently worked on include Solo: A Star Wars Story, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, and Ant-Man and the Wasp. They will be one of many different VFX companies that will work on Aquaman.

Aquaman director James Wan has said that the movie is "filled to the gills with VFX", and they are something he wants to be perfect. In fact, he cited all of the visual effects as for the reason why there hasn't been an Aquaman trailer yet. He doesn't want to release something sub-par.

i dont think ILM is the main vfx company working on aquaman but i cant say im disappointed regardless. only film theyve done badly was kingdom of the crystal skull.

There are tons of other VFX companies (MPC, Rodeo FX, Scanline VFX, Iloura, Digital Domain and YES even WETA Digital)working on Aquaman!

They have 7 months till the movie gets released. The VFX already started months ago. The good thing about them finishing principal photography so early is that they have almost a year for post production. That is remarkably rare in the current movie climate. I don't know what deadline you're talking about or what is "pretty late" but i wouldn't stress.

ILM are fantastic so i have no problem here especially when the people working on BvS, WW and JL done a mediocre job. Black Panther suffered at the end with some really poor CGI but Infinity War looked amazing through out with Thanos being the main standout along with Rocket and Groot.

I agree with WW and JL but BvS CGI was mediocre? Are you absolutely out of your mind? The VFX in that film were outstanding. If you really want to see a movie that looks like the CGI budget was $10, watch BP. Shocking VFX in almost every aspect. Below standard for the quality you expect in 2018. There's been PS3 video games that looked more convincing.

The same VFX companies worked on all three: Framestore, MPC, Weta Digital, Scanline. WB added more VFX houses to JL in order to get the final film done after the reshoots, so the more iffier scenes are probably from those guys.

Damn I hated BP CGI. Not everything but when it came to fighting it looked really bad. I hope the underwater effects is a different story here.

Dysktra had a falling out with Lucas during filming of the first Star Wars film, that's why he's not mentioned on ILM's site (despite them winning Oscars for his work for that). He hasn't worked at ILM for decades, he's mostly freelancing at different VFX studios.

  Felt like an epic event film, the exact same way a comic book event feels (or should feel) like. That said, it's not perfect. I thought that some characters were underutilized, like Cap (he's my favorite cinematic Avenger). In general, the movie just doesn't have time to breathe and never really takes its time to set up certain scenes. I know that there's a ton of stuff happening, and with the 53215 characters and all... but frankly, the movie should've been longer. I know it's 2h35, but the movie already ends at 2h15, the rest is just credits and the post-credit scene. The base movie itself should've been a good 15 minutes longer. I mean, why not? TDKR is that long and it was fine. Overall, I really liked it, but it bothers me that it could have been amazing, not because of what's there (because everything that's there is very good) but rather, because of what isn't there.

    But dont forget that this is half of the movie, part 2 is coming next year, so that explains the short running time i think. I cant wait to get part 1 and 2 on blue ray to watch it as a whole, that would definitely improve the overall quality of the film, and maybe fix your issue. I personally thought the movie was great, Thanos really surprised me, marvel actually made me care about a purple cgi Hitler lol, wow.

      Yeah, but I'm of the belief that a movie should always stand on its own and not have to rely on other media (be it movies, comics or otherwise) to justify its errors. Again, I loved everything I saw (minus some major plot holes I'm willing to forgive for story purposes), but I just wanted more of it. And I wanted the movie to take the time to establish certain relationships and character arcs.
      I was really disappointed we didn't get to see what Cap has been doing these past 2 years. Even Spider-Man had more screentime than him, when Cap should have as much screentime as Tony imo.
      It's just a tad too fast paced for my liking and I would've preferred some extra character moments. I did love Thanos though. He may not be the Mad Titan from the comics, but that's okay. I never really bought the whole "I'm doing it for love"-thing anyway. I much preferred his cinematic motivations. And Brolin gave a fantastic performance, and the CGI was fucking flawless. Oh, and Thor was a freaking badass in the film (you know which scene I'm talking about). I had major goosebumps when I saw him wrecking shit in Wakanda. One of the best superhero entrances in a movie ever. Music was great too.

      Yeah, i see what you mean. Thor entrance was phenomenal indeed, the way he threw that hammer/axe at Thanos was great. Hopefully cap and thor will get more screen time, i feel that thor never gets a cool scene that last more than 5 seconds, and he deserves more.

  The last Big-Budget movie I saw which had Tremendous CGI + Motion Capture was "War for the planet of the Apes"(None of the Superhero movies came close) which IMO was also one of the best movies of 2017 but under-performed at the box office due to a crowded release.....Also, Blade Runner 2049.

  I've tried to make it known that I loved movies like Iron Man, Winter Soldier, etc., and I appreciated some of Joss Whedon's additions to JL, like the awesome opening Batman scene. I actually do try to practice what I preach about not following biases, and so I'll like a movie whenever it's good :P

      Oh heavens no! I appreciate his appreciation of some DCEU stuff, of course, but we definitely diverge from there. I've gotten into a couple arguments with him, in fact, lol
      I just take forever to see new movies ever :/ I'm just always doing other things or money gets tight or whatever, so I usually end up just waiting for Blu-Ray and such. It's a real problem, lol
      And no, I have not seen IW yet, and though I am super excited for it, I refuse to let myself see it until I've caught up on everything else first!

    I've been thinking about it and I've come to the conclusion that the reason I dont like it too much is because of its total disregard of it's own seriousness.
    I may prefer my CBM's lean more to the serious side of things but I dont hate them when they want to be fun.The GotG movies are really good at balancing these two elements.Ragnarok is problematic because the way it balanced itself was far too obvious. There was far too much discernible improvisation in a lot of scenes.
    Every Blu-ray I have is of movies I want to see again, I have no problem rewatching any of the previous MCU movies (even Dark World). It's not a bad movie, good villain and good characters with a bold story, I just dont care to see it again.

I think it's a great choice. Infinity War was visually one of the most impressive CBM's ever. I wouldn't be surprised if the Marvel universe finally wins an Academy Award for visual effects. BP was a bit cartoonish though.

  I have a question for you. I understand your position on Momoa and I definitely sympathize with it. All the attempts to make him “cool” and “not lame” just seem to come off as overdoing it. You are right that they tried to turn Aquaman into Momoa and not Momoa into Aquaman.
  That being said, I don’t really mind Momoa in the role. I believe that Justice League gave him very little to work with outside of being a bruiser who says things like “Yeah”, “My Man” and looking “badass”.
  My question is this. Do you believe that Wan could make Momoa work in this role in way that would allow you to put aside your dislike for his aesthetic in favor of the acting performance?
  I’m pretty hopeful in this regard as I believe that a good director can get a great performance out of an average/below average actor while a bad director *cough*Snyder*cough* can make great actors give embarrassing performances (Laurence Fishburne, Kevin Costner, Ezra Miller, and especially Amy Adams).

  I haven't seen it yet, and I know you're constantly full of it, but I find it hard to believe from the trailers I've seen that Infinity War could match the sheer visual beauty of CBM's like Thor: Ragnarok and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.

They need to talk to Zack Snyder, keep James Wan as the director but i think snyder needs to still work with DC films, after all he directed films such as '300' and Watchmen, I think I'm actually a fan of Snyder now...

I think Wan wants an almost finished movie cut with a lot of post production to then show the teaser. This way we'll see in the movie everything the trailer has. The middle of the year is a good moment to start the promo. The WB style to hype the movies one year before has being a big error. I know, the industry does it a lot, but in the DCEU it isn't working good.

I think BP was a rushed job. It feels like they had a different ending and rushed the fight scene at the end. Does the movie feel like it was a $200 mill movie? No, they reshot, remade a section of the movie I think.

  That's surprising to hear, if true. Because one of the things that the MCU is good at, is making sure reshoots aren't discernible in the final picture.

with DCU is not the VFX company, but the amount of meddling done by WB weeks before release. if they would have delayed JL by a few months they mouth would have been done properly, but JL vfx studios had less than a month, max two months, but I doubt it as the film needs to be distributed and so on. ILM is coming a little late, but at least they have a few months to create awesome stuff, its pretty exciting as long we don't hear about reshoots on late October.

ILM is more than fine. Glad to hear Aquaman is in in good hands with VFX and I continue to applaud James Wan for focusing on quality and delivering a trailer when's he good and ready. Refusing to be rushed in regards to time from anyone.... let alone blasted DC executives who better have learned their lesson by now is the way to go--especially on a film like this.

Every single one of us can wait and with the film coming out at the end of the year, I'll gladly wait several more months for everything to be just as he envisions. No stone unturned. We need this film to be nothing short of great. And the time spent on tightening up on VFX also allows time to make sure the story is well done and playing out as it should with ZERO hangups. Anything less is unacceptable in my book.
