'Shazam' director creates his own meme, based on 'Batman v Superman'

Ever since Zachary Levi shared the first official photo of himself as Shazam last week it's blown up all over the internet. There's been a ton of memes created, putting the Shazam photo in various situations. Shazam director David Sandberg saw them and decided to create a meme of his own.

"I love this!," he said about the photo above, which was made by a fan. Then he added his own meme to the mix. "Since everyone else is doing this...," he said, as he posted the Batman v Superman video below, which includes an unexpected Shazam twist!

All these memes have been great publicity for the movie, which is why I can't believe someone (probably Warner Bros.) made Levi delete his original post where he shared this image. It's too late though, the image is already all over the internet and the memes will just keep on coming!

Shazam recently wrapped production. It will be released on April 5, 2019.

Well, the general audience is very distracted right now with all of these big blockbusters hitting at once. Between Infinity War, Deadpool 2, Star Wars, and Jurassic World, I kinda don't blame them for waiting until all that cools off so they can give Shazam and Aquaman some proper spotlight.
Although, on the other hand... they could have been running trailers for both WITH those big blockbuster movies if they acted a little sooner. lol

      That has little to do with the discussion of Superman's connection to Jesus in BvS. Obviously the best route to take would be looking at the depiction of Jesus' life in the Christian Gospels, which of course do not at all depict a reclusive Jesus. I assume you are trying to make a point, suggesting Superman is very reclusive in the DCEU and is thus a poor allegorical representation of Jesus. I would contest that, and I would also come to the conclusion that you are missing the point of how the allegory in BvS is used.

What he said is an opinion and what you think is an opinion, he's neither right or wrong because what he said and you thinking otherwise is subjective. If i said BvS contains Superman then that's a fact because it does, if i say it contains a poor version of Superman then that's opinion like you saying it contains a good version of him is purely opinion as well.       Really? Because if you go talk to one of the loons who actually believe that, they'll sure debate it with you. Without logical limits, this whole "subjectivity" idea that pervades our culture (in sometimes poisonous ways, I would argue) can really be applied to anything and everything. That's why I say poisonous. As ridiculous as it may seem, it's true, and I can get into an entire tangent about the effects that kind of thinking is currently having on society. The sooner we as a people wake up and admit life is full of more objective realities than not, the better.
      But anyway, that's nice and all, except you people all claim BvS is *factually* flawed, etc., just as much as the fans of it claim the opposite. And the truth of the matter is, most value judgments can actually be considered more or less right or wrong. The real world is not nearly as postmodern as you "It's all subjective, nobody is wrong" folks like to think. As long as we all continue to make claims of fact and to argue our positions, we are actually implicitly agreeing to a certain set of standards by which to essentially *objectively* measure our "subjective" ideas and beliefs. I tend to be an objectivist in most things, and I do believe in objective, inherent value with storytelling and art of this sort, and I believe the measures we go by to determine the quality of that are - when looked at objectively - weighing the scale in BvS's favor there.
      An example you might be able to get behind is a sports analogy. I'm not particularly into sports, but perhaps you will understand. You can be totally against a particular team in the NFL, constantly rooting for whoever it is they they are playing against. But they just keep beating every team, and they end up in the Super Bowl. Surely, despite your hatred of that team and fandom for the other team, you would admit that they cannot be a "bad" team. There are certain things we all agree by as a society that determines that, whether you like it or not, they are quite good - the skill with which they play the game, their number of wins, the cohesiveness of their plays and teamwork and such, etc. So they are objectively a good team, regardless of how someone might subjectively feel for them.
      Another example is morality. This gets into some debated philosophical stuff here, but perhaps you would agree with me that there is at least some degree of objectivity in morality. Would you say it is objectively wrong to murder someone? Surely I would. That's just another example where you might see how some of these belief-based, arguably "subjective" concepts might actually be objective or that we always treat them as if they are, even if we claim not to believe such things.
      This whole debate over BvS is not as simple as your favorite color. It is not a merely subjective issue that is entirely up to personal preference and thus has no effect on how you fairly perceive the film's quality. It is something you people fight about and call others wrong over and defend or support with arguments and evidence that are probably fairly reasonable according to your perception. Do you see what I'm saying?
      Also, the 13 is there because it's one of my favorite numbers. My other favorites are 7 and 42, in case you were curious.

      I believe the earth is round. I believe in gravity. I believe the sun will come up tomorrow. I believe we are not in a Matrix. I believe in objective morality. I’m sure some of those things you would call factual, and thus would be “knowledge,” since they would correspond with reality, yet that does not change the fact that I *believe* them, and so they are also beliefs, either way. Because, like I said, knowledge is just a belief that corresponds with reality. There’s the explanation without the philosophy.
      As for my more philosophical point about reality actually being false, that was just another way to try to get you to understand that everything is a belief. As long as there is the possibility everything you “know” is false - as Descartes does a great job illustrating when he concludes that the only thing he can know with the utmost certainty is his consciousness’s own existence - what can that knowledge be besides a belief? As I understand beliefs, they seem to be things we take as true or factual, even if we cannot prove it the same way we can (supposedly) prove the existence of - say - a chair in the room. But I want to demonstrate to you how actually pointless that whole classification system is, differentiating knowledge from beliefs, etc., when, for all we know, our own bodies don’t even exist (again, see Descartes). EVERYTHING is a belief.
      Basically, the point is this is a pointless debate over semantics that are all basically the same thing.

      Dude were not just focusing on one scene. This scene points to the bigger issue, that this Superman is more removed from humanity. Look at the scene, he does alot more posturing and introspection before actually saving them. The pic you posted was from kingdom come works there because of context. You can't just copy paste a frame from a comic and expect the same reaction in an entirely different story. I've never argued that Snyder's work is ugly, because it's not. That shot is beautifully done, but it's out of place, and his version of the DCEU feels the same. For example in bvs there were Random shots from that legendary dark knight returns pose in the lightning. Except in that story it works because that's him finally coming back, in BVS that scene is randomly crammed in the middle of the doomsday fight. All in all, it's not just one little scene, but the consistency in mistakes that forces us to bring forth examples such as these.

      No, perhaps you are not just focusing on this one scene, but most the people complaining about it on here do seem to be. They seem to just be complaining about the shot because it supposedly looks like Superman is just sitting around and not saving people in need, which is simply not the case, as I elaborated on in my last message - and in fact that is the very thing you were doing in your first message, despite now changing your tune and making a more sophisticated argument.
      As for said argument, no. First of all, he does zero "posturing and introspection." He's literally just floating (in slow-mo), about to save some people. That's it. Second, you people act as if there is a problem with Superman's characterization in these movies, but the evidence you use suggests something different entirely. I don't think you have a problem with how Superman is portrayed; I think you don't like how the world is portrayed. Superman is not removing himself form humanity in that scene (in fact, he's doing the exact opposite - embracing it). It is the PEOPLE who are removing him from themselves. That's the entire point of BvS. Everyone removes him from humanity, whether that takes the form of hating and fearing him as a threat to the world or worshipping him as some kind of godlike figure. That's what these people on the roof are viewing him as, some type of god. And so we're seeing him through their eyes here. It's not Superman's fault the world reacts this way to his existence, so stop blaming him. And you have no right to take issue with the depiction of the world, either, as that is genuinely what would realistically happen to society if a figure such a Superman were to exist.
      I didn't post any of the pics I was referring to, which is why I am not certain about them. But I believe they were actually in Peace on Earth. But saving people is saving people is saving people - not sure what more context you could need beyond that. And that comic deals with Superman in doubt, too, so there's some double contextiness for you there.
      Except iconic imagery actually does illicit similar reactions every time its used. That's what makes it iconic.
      That shot is not out of place; are you joking? It perfectly conveys what they're going for in the scene: examining humanity's controversial reaction and perception of Superman, and specifically in this moment, his being viewed as a godlike being by some.
      Oh my word no. The famous TDKReturns image of Batman in the air with the lighting strike does not "work" because he is returning, what a ridiculous claim. That shot works PERIOD. It is art. It's an iconic moment that is special inherently, not dependent on any kind of extra narrative context to give it value. Beauty is beauty. And it "works" just as well in BvS, because it still cool and beautiful, and it makes sense that it is used in the movie because of the movie's numerous inspirations from that comic.
      If even half of the supposedly consistent "mistakes" the DCEU makes were actually valid and true, I could be more open to listening to you guys and heeding your opinions more. But unfortunately, almost all of them tend to be completely overblown, hypocritical, and/or outright false when actually examined with any kind of objective integrity, meaning I can only assume they stem entirely from some kind of blindly biased agenda that I have no desire to be a part of.

    The movie's narrative theme, not just the images, is heavily influenced by that book.
    I don't blame them. It's one of the greatest Superman stories, by Paul Dini and Alex Ross no less. :) Delightful to see nods to it on the big screen.

      Thing is Superman usually might crack like that when he's been doing this for years not after 2 years on the job, its funny because Snyder's SM might have been liked by people if he wasn't some moody asshole who barely interacts with people beyond saving them. One of the reasons people like Superman or The Flash in comics is because their people heroes who do more then just save them and then piss off, they stop and interact with them and show a interest in them, people start to know them and think of them as one of their own and not just another hero. I see very little reason to like Snyder's Superman other then the fact he saves people though, people see him as an alien in the films because he acts alien to them despite Supes thinking himself as one of us and not a god or higher being.

      Says who? Where does it say in the "Comic book rules when writing Superman" handbook that Superman can't succumb to the pressure of saving the world, if he's only been doing it for two years? I'm sure Peter Parker has felt the pressure during his first month as Spider-Man, so there's no reason why Superman can't do the same after two years.

      Well considering that BvS doesn't have a lot of jokes, and the jokes that they do have are natural and don't cut the tension. I would've thought that the MCU was heading into the right direction and had actually grew some balls.

      I hope fans of Paul Dini's work don't go back and retroactively decide he sucks like some people did to Keaton/Burton's version of Batman. In order to justify hating something modern, they go back and hate something they used to love to remain logically consistent with their new standards.
      It's so saddening to see Keaton's Batman get dumped on so pettily, especially when it's coming from people who grew up as fans of it. :/

      I found inspiration in Clark's conversations with his mother and father, and from his decision to put his life on the line in the end, deciding it was the right thing to do no matter how the world sees him.
      The original corn field scene in JL probably would have been more the flavor of inspiration we got from PoE's ending, but they fired Snyder and cut that apart. It appears to me that he had every intention of taking this Superman to a similarly warm, sunny place.

      Waid did have some nice things to say, but his complaints seem to overtake his praises. Obviously, I take issue with how accurate and objective some of those complaints are.
      It's unfortunate he doesn't like it, because Birthright seems to have played a big part in the film's inspiration.

      Its quite easy to mistake it for Kingdom Come though considering its Alex Ross, has a KC looking Superman and has a KC looking image. When you mistake comic book scans its usually because of the art not the writer hence why i left out Dini.
      Just because the likes of Superman and WW are two of my favorite characters it doesn't mean i've read everything they have been in considering they 1000's of stories and 100's of classics.

      Thing is i never once i said i've read single story and issue of everything Superman related, you're the one whose thinking that but i never once said it. As for this story well its known sure but its not on the level of The Long Halloween, Hush or The Killing Joke, fact is those 3 stories are all wanted as Animated films (TKJ got a film but before that it was wanted) and considered 3 of the best and most famous comics ou there, never once have i seen PoE wanted as film or appear in top 10 lists of best SM stories, most say Red Son, Kingdom Come, For the Man Who Has Everything, All Star etc what shows PoE isn't a well known SM story on the level on those. In fact i'm willing to bet if i asked most Superman fans what their top 3 SM stories are very few would mention it while actual famous stories like All Star (the greatest Superman story of them all), Kingdom Come, Red Son, the Alan Moore stories, Last Son Of Krypton, Birthright and even Death Of would all be mentioned over it.
      Also i'm willing to bet you haven't read it yourself and never heard of it before you saw this article, i actually believe you're just following the crowd here to get upvotes and trying to put me down. Worth pointing out here that i never said i never heard of PoE i just said i never read it and mistook it for Kingdom Come because it was Alex Ross's art and a panel what could off easily come from KC.       To be completely honest about it though, I've found that he's been particularly shady in the past (the past several years) and usually covers it up with these "polite" smiley faces. I mean shady, as in misconstruing what other people say, deliberately ignoring evidence, upvoting comments full of harassment and blatantly having double standards when it comes to angry behavior of both sides. Idk, I just never really bought his "nice" behavior. It seems he's eased up these last few months, and I'm really not trying to start some type of petty war here, I'm just saying.       Well you know, I'll entertain the possibility that I may have been wrong about him all of these years. After all, it's not always that easy to understand people's perspectives and intentions, based only on internet comments. But I have to be honest, I vividly remember him saying things about me that are just completely false, as well as berating me for pointing out facts, because yes I am sometimes rude, I know that. But he gladly ignored (in that specific case) that the guy he was defending was far more toxic than I ever was and completely disrespected me and my opinion. Don't get me wrong, I don't hold it against him. I simply don't hold grudges. And he's not wrong for pointing out my rudeness... but he is (or was) so freaking partisan about it. And what bothered me immensely is he lectured me about my bad behavior (fine), but I remember him upvoting comments full of toxic and venom that were directed at me, as if that's any better. Again, maybe he didn't mean it that way. Maybe he didn't really notice. In any case, it's in the past, so I don't care about it anymore. I'm just saying, I don't know if this guy's politeness is always that genuine. But hey, perhaps I'm wrong.
      You're right though, he clearly does follow the comics. That much is clear.

      Thanks man. You've always done right by me too (as far as I recall lol), so there's really no reason for us to bite each other's heads off, even if we disagree on some things -- and when we do, we can try to hash it out calmly like regular people.
      There's plenty we do still agree on, and we share a tremendous love for these characters, so the glass is half-full, not half-empty. I don't mind if we have different tastes or standards. It's all about behavior. You're cool to me, so I'm cool to you.
      The amount of bitter pettiness around here is so unnecessary.       Not necessarily. Why wouldn't he take a second to observe the situation and the best course of action? Superman does that sometimes - hell, even the Flash does. They are waiting on rooftops, not drowning, so he does have that second to absorb the scene.
      The moment also comes at a time in the story where we know Superman is new to this, so he feels the weight of this huge responsibility deeply, and is troubled by the uncertainty of his path right now, so perhaps seeing that many people reaching up to him with tears in their eyes effects him emotionally and that gives him pause.
      I know that's filling in a blank, but it's not hard to fill it when you have gobs and gobs of context to infer something as reasonable as either of those two options, or even combine them. There's no reason to assume that he didn't care when MoS and BvS painstakingly illustrate he does care; he demonstrably cares immensely.
      I don't get why people hate the use of imagery so much and automatically equate pretty pictures with shallowness. Not saying you feel this way, but the sentiment is out there. In this case, I think the use of imagery adds gravity to the characters and the story being told.
      We also see him saving other people in the same montage, so I'm also confused (and disappointed) that anyone would ever doubt he saved them after the clip cuts away. Also a sentiment floating about out there.

      Thing is Superman and The Flash think in super speed, they don't need a minute of real time to think things through when they can do it in less then a sec. in that shot he's just hovering there looking godly and taking in all the people begging for his help, he doesn't look like a hero he looks like a Bible image. Images are fine when they work but for me this image doesn't because its just a god pose, the image with the tanker was great though but Superman is actively saving people there like he did with the rocket bit but here he's just hovering around doing nothing while his subjects beg for help.
      Really this paints a larger picture of how Snyder never seemed interested in Superman saving people. Pretty much every SM film has a big action set piece of Superman just saving lives and proving why people love him and why he's needed but Snyder never once gave us that (i'm not counting the finale of MoS and stuff, i mean something like the Plane scene in Returns), this montage is what 2 or 3 mins and that's all we got of him saving people in a large scale.

      How do you know this? This isn't comic book Superman. Numerous fans have said that Cavill's iteration is one of the weaker versions of Superman. We just learned that he's as fast as Flash and that he can use ice breath. We don't know how his brain capacity works. For all we know, he might not know how to calculus or chemistry.

Somethings are just assumed, its like saying the only villains Bruce has seem are Joker, Harley, Killer Croc and Deadshot because they are the only ones shown, its pretty clear in that 20 year time he built up a rogues bigger then that even if it doesn't rival the comics list, also how do we know Thawne even exists because we never saw hime even though Barry's Dad is locked up for the murder of Nora (or am i assuming she's called Nora she was never name dropped). Come on most of Lex's backstory is just people assuming shit so yeah we can assume Clark can think of super speed even if its not at Barry's level.

      Yeah thinking on the fly definitely means that he can think with super speed. Instead of just assuming that this Superman can do all of this, why don't you wait until he actually does it so that you can be sure? It's already been noted that this Superman had to be powered down in order for the stories to work.
      Considering that Batman didn't about metahumans, we assume that he hasn't met villains like Clayface or Ivy, unless Ivy is like her human version from BTAS. For all we know, Batman probably fought mostly regular criminals, gangsters, and the Joker. We don't even know if Ra's exists in this universe.
      And for Flash, we'll just have to wait and see. We assume that Thwane exists because he's part of Flash' origins.

      I don't know if thinking in super speed is something you always live with as a constant or something you can sort of achieve through focus in the case of whichever interpretation of Superman. I suppose it depends on the writer. Either way, he stops to think sometimes. It's only natural that he would - especially as a relative rookie.
      You say Snyder isn't interested in Superman saving people, but right before that you gave two examples from the same montage where he is shown doing just that. This is one moment of pause amongst tons of moments where he is in fact taking action.
      Man of Steel and Batman v Superman are primarily about his choice to save people in the face of possible negative repercussions, and so, including your two examples, we do see a lot of people being saved.

What i really wanted for BvS was a big heroic action scene of Superman just saving people from what ever (think one of those montage scenes but as a full on scene rather then a 10 sec clip) and proving to the world why he's needed and the good he can do.

      I feel like that point was made well enough, and partly by his battle with Doomsday along with the following sacrifice.
      That said, I do understand what you want, and I think it's perfectly fair to want it. It was totally the highlight of Returns. I just don't think this particular story suffers without it because of all the other things we did get.
      Here's hoping we get an equivalent to the plane scene in MoS2, or even something substantial in Shazam. I have this feeling we're gonna get a Henry/Supes snowball rolling down the mountain pretty soon here.

      To be fair, people did complain that there wasn't enough badass superhero battling in Returns, so WB deciding to spotlight that is pretty understandable.
      I think both movies are fine in their depictions; they just spend more time on different things, and there's nothing wrong with that.
      With Henry, we're going to get to see tons of both over the course of his appearances, so I'm not worried. :)

      the purpose of this montage is not to act as character development for Supes on a personal level. It is to show how different people around the world view him. And yes, in a more realistic interpretation of how Superman would be viewed in the public, some people in the world would likely likely see him as a god. I just can't find anything wrong here.

      In a realistic world people killed themselves thinking it was the end of times when they saw the falling burning debris of the orbital station Mir back in 1996. This is not a realistic world, this is a movie, and a movie needs to know what to show. I don't care about how some worship him, he is the protagonist, I'm supposed to care about him. And to get there, I need to see him act in a way that's dear to me. He does not. He hangs there like an indifferent god, always with that face that says, "I'd rather be in Philadelphia." He saves a girl from a burning building and does not even look her in the eyes. There were no such scenes where he would comfort a person he just saved. That's why Flash's contact with a little girl is effective.

    But there are more people to save than just the one family who drew his logo on their roof. Superman was assessing the situation to figure out what was the best way to save everyone as quickly and decisively as possible. He can't carry dozens of people at one time unless they're on something bigger that he could lift in one go.
    And then for the imagery, as a die-hard Superman fan, I loved it because it thematically fit in with the perspective of the montage. We go from seeing Superman's perspective on how he's being viewed and worshipped and then slowly leaving his POV to see how others view him. This is illustrated in how we get a close-up on his face in the Day of the Dead part, watch as the camera veers away from him as he's dragging the ship, and ending on not even seeing his face during the flooding scene.
    Mis-en-scene purposes of showing Superman from a distance as the media continues to scrutinize his every move until he's completely dehumanized.

The amount of desperation in the act of so scrutinizingly overanalyzing a single moment in this entire movie and making it out to be such a big problem reeks of is so unbelievable to me. You haters really have no chill, do you?
It’s a shot taken from the comics, in which people need help and Superman shows up, giving us all the information we need. It’s as simple as that. It happens to be executed in such a way so as to show us how some of the world perceives him as some type of god, but beyond that, that’s really all that brief moment of the film is about. How it could possibly be blown so far out of proportion and criticized so ludicrously by some of you people is unimaginable to me.

How did I guess this would end up being a debate about the BvS scene instead? Honestly, I'm not even mad, the debate is why I absolutely love the movie. Long may the debates continue.

The point of the obviously slowed-down shot, I think, is not even about Superman, per se. It's about showing peoples perspective of a being thats inserted itself in normal human existence and how he's seen as a saviour, an almost God-like figure. Having the shot be of him in the middle of his saviour duties is the point, it accompanies what Neil deGrasse Tyson is saying. That this isn't just about a guy saving people, it's about what that means, especially to those who raise their hands to him like he's some kind of God.

You as the viewer must infer, on your own, that he's obviously going to save people or has been saving people. We dont have to see him doing it because it adds nothing to the point of what the director is trying to put across as the central debate, "what does Superman mean to normal human existence".

Sure, him hovering over a woman pleading for help can be construed as him seeing himself as God-like figure looking down on those smaller than him, maybe you as a viewer are meant to interpret the scene this way. It kind of explains Lex Luthors motivation for doing what he's doing.

And yes, that scene was dumb.

Instead of showing Superman's humane side when people is suffering and have him saving that family, talking to them, smiling at them, etc. they just went purely for the god imagery. Funny thing is they could have done both perfectly. Instead of just hovering, show him descending to the family in slo-mo (there's your god imagery) and then giving his hand to them, aking them if they were alright, smiling at them etc.
