On February 20, 2015 Batman v Superman director Zack Snyder released the very first photo of Jason Momoa as Aquaman. Now we know when that photo shoot took place: August 2, 2014.
Snyder just posted a new behind-the-scenes look at that Aquaman photo shoot for Batman v Superman on Vero. "Vintage... August 2, 2014" he captioned it. Check it out below.
Now over four years after that photo was taken, Momoa will be leading his own movie. Aquaman hits theaters on December 21st.

I kinda wished they used this in Justice League and upgraded it to the classic look in the solo film instead of the hybrid we got in the movie.
I think the Justice League armor would be perfect for representing the classic look if it was just a bit more gold and less green on the top half. And then ideally he would switch back and forth between that and his BvS look depending on if he wanted to be in hunter mode or regal mode.

That orange and green design from the comics is the epitome of all things cheesy and garishly ugly. Gold is the appropriate translation of that into real armor.
Would a deeper, dimmer orange that shines intricately in the light be acceptable? :) Like, you know how they did the blue for Superman MoS and BvS. It was darker with highlights.
I'm not a professional of course, but here's an idea for the darker orange, which I feel is kingly and iconic; less bland than what we got:
Ehhhhhh... I’m still not sure I could get over it. Making it a darker, more auburn hue is definitely a step in the right direction, perhaps, but it still won’t function as naturally for a stately sea-themed armor or look as acceptable with green as a straight gold does.
I certainly don’t think “bland” is a word that could accurately describe the JL armor. It was incredibly intricate and ancient and aquatic and ornate looking to me. It gets the job done, more or less. Regardless, the BvS look is still the best either way :P
I definitely respect your preference. I'm just scraping to find a middle ground. haha
Personally, I like the BvS look, the JL look, and the concept behind my Photoshop there. I also like how he looks in some comics, but that's a different context than these more grounded films (and I prefer DC properties to feel grounded).
Of those three, JL is my least preferred, but it's still good. It just needs something to make the armor's major details pop out from the minor details some more. When I say 'bland', that's what I mean. All the details are kind of a big static blend without a strong basis of contrast.
This problem is worsened by the dim, often gray or blue filters in the film, because this further decreases the contrast and makes them look roughly like two shades of the same color.

So, I think a dark orange would provide the exact right kind of contrast
while also feeling more iconically 'Aquaman'. It's important to please
long-time fans of the character who would like to see the classic orange
represented in a more serious context. Man of Steel/BvS respected that with Superman, again, and I think that should be our template for DC heroes.
You'll see here that the contrast is even more apparent in dark scenarios using orange, without being overly loud or corny in my opinion:

Again, that would look better as an actual costume than as me coloring on a screenshot. lol
Even if the green and gold were more individual from each other, that would be a big improvement. Like a cooler, bluer green versus a warmer gold as one example.
Anyway, I know you have your preference, and it's still cool-looking. I'm just offering an olive branch to help you enjoy the orange side of things in the case that the 'more traditional' costume rumor is true for the Aquaman movie, or at least to kinda see how it can be done in a serious tone. :)
Maybe 'bronze' or 'amber' is a better word for this idea than 'orange'.
I definitely like where the ideas are heading but still find myself resistent to the idea a bit in some ways, haha
But yeah, I see where you’re coming from with the contrast. That is also perhaps part of why I would like to see a bit more gold and less green on the top half, to really help distinguish those colors as well as to be a bit more in line with the comics look. I think that’s a great potential solution.
But also, the thing is about being accurate to the comics - I feel like Aquaman has in some ways had a lot greater variation in his attire and color schemes than Superman has ever had, hasn’t he? So I feel like it could potentially be more open for possibilities with his movie appearance than some characters.

But Guardians of the Galaxy makes no effort to not be utterly ridiculous. Like many Marvel movies, it’s basically just a complete comedy without much effort put into being realistic anymore. Also, the MCU has gotten to the point now that they can get away with pretty much anything, regardless of how outlandish it may be. And that took years of gradual build up and introducing increasingly fantastical elements to do. But even then, all of the costumes look grounded enough and, while honoring the spirit of the comics, do not cross into cheesy territory for the most part.
While Guardians is very comedy heavy, I would argue that it can also be emotional.
And it's unfair to ask that kind of property to feel any more realistic than it does.
I’m not saying it should try NOT to be utterly ridiculous. It clearly works for that type of film and those characters. Embracing ridiculousness can be good in some contexts; remember I am a Doctor Who fan, lol

Nah they ruined a pretty good opportunity to do Throne of Atlantis. Orm is pissed because of what the World Engine did to the ocean, maybe unleashing the trench, massive underwater earthquicks which caused the death of hundreds or thousands of Atlanteans. But he sees it as an opportunity to manipulate those around him and put the blame on the surface dwellers. Then the standalone Aquaman movie could have been where we see him as the new king and healing the relationship between the two sides.
But no, they just had to do another predictable alien invasion movie.
A version of that story could still very easily be done.
But the Justice League is always formed because of an alien invasion. That’s how it is.

They didn't change the whole movie, Darkseid had a cameo and nothing major. Like i said, the mcu already got thanos, and he's a copy of Darkseid. The audience would've said that dc was ripping off marvel.
It’s unavoidable, though. Darkseid is necessary, so there will unfortunately always be those comparisons.
Yes, its unavoidable, but they dont have to make him the big bad of the dceu. They could defeat him in JL 2 and move to something else i guess.

Sure, i wanted Darkseid as well, but sometimes you have to look at the bigger picture, it will be a terrible mistake business wise if they make Darkseid the main villain like Thanos, especially after JL bombed. They have to come up with a new plan, and WB knows it, that's why they probably removed Darkseid from the final cut.
Well I’m not even acknowledging the existence of the JL we got right now, lol. It’s hard to see how those plans could fit in light of this version of JL. But I’m sure there’s a way to work in Darkseid that would not be completely disastrous from a business angle. Harmless comparisons, versus a more detrimental alternative.
If it stayed a two-parter as was originally planned, I would say it's a pretty safe guess he'd be the villain of Pt. 2, so he probably started out as a lot more than a cameo before Zack's plans got chopped up and reduced so much.
Probably, but i doubt it would've been more than a few minutes. The whole thing was a mess, it was way too early for Darkseid tbh. The heroes are not even established yet, i dont want a bunch of inexperienced heroes fighting Darkseid.
It was probably meant to tag along with the early Darkseid encounter in the New 52 JL comics, which I gather most people enjoyed.
The League basically formed to fight Darkseid and the Parademons in that version too.
Also, the few minutes in Part 1 would be setting up an entire movie around Darkseid in Part 2, so the point was that Part 2 would be worth the Part 1 cameo.
Lets pretend everything went according to plan, and were getting part 2 next year. Would you want a bunch of inexperienced heroes fighting Darkseid? Flash is clumsy, batman just came back from a killing spree and still finding himself, superman haven't proven himself yet, he still seem confused, wonder woman is still finding herself and is not confident yet, aquaman is wild with no discipline, and cyborg cant even control his weapons etc... None of them are ready.
The idea would hopefully be that they grow to become ready over a 6 hour epic. The first film would be them finding their footing as an imperfect team against the lesser baddie, then they would come together with self discovery and confidence to approach a Darkseid who is likely trying to offset this to keep an advantage, but they conquer their weaknesses and thwart him after the struggle and self-doubt and thus become the League proper to tie off the story nice and pretty. :)
Ummm, i dont think snyders cut was going to deliver all of this, especially when everyone knows he lacks in the character development part and more.
I loved the character development in Man of Steel. He's not the writer anyway. ;p
I'm not pretending to know what Snyder's cut would have delivered. I'm just painting an ideal vision of how I would have done it, and saying it's possible and logical that they could have been planning something similar, because it's not a stretch of the imagination.
What character development? I genuinely saw no development in MoS.
Supes acted the same way at the end as he would have had at the start.
Only difference was a costume.
If you mean saving people, yeah, he always does that.
How he feels about it, the way he goes about it, and his developing sense of choosing who to become, why, and his maturing sense of responsibility over fear, all evolve throughout the movie. Lois, Ma, and Pa Kent all coach him through different aspects of that. It's a coming of age story that's all about him facing his fears and embracing a destiny he's understandably unsure about.
He starts the movie conflicted and lost, and he ends the movie smiling and found.

That's a stretch. Honestly that end scene was out of place, nothing was concluded, it was just a way to give us Clark Kent as we know him in the laziest way possible.

Its not a bad look and much better then the generic trash he was wearing in the final film, i'm really looking forward to seeing the more "classic" look he's meant to have in his solo film though.

Dunno if it'll win him over, but it's kind of the feel I'm hoping to see in the solo Aquaman film. :)
Simply adding the orange makes it feel so much less bland and generic. The intricate details stand out better with the contrast, instead of everything looking like monotone static.
It doesn't have to be bright and cheesy to evoke a comic-accurate feeling.
Yeah that looks pretty sweet, the color makes it all stand out better.
The Julian Lewis Jones costume is the costume I think that translated incredibly well from the comics. Just make the gauntlets green. If any costume in the JL deserves to look ornate (or 'busy'), it's Aquaman's. Or at least it should when he becomes the king of Atlantis. Maybe minus the helmet and cape.

That's a question for the whole #BvSReference project... what the hell did "UNITE THE SEVEN" mean?
My guess is that there were seven JL members planned back when Justice League was still a two-parter. Maybe Green Lantern or Martian Mahunter would have joined them at the end of Part 1, just in time before Darkseid´s arrival in Part 2. But we all know how that turned out, and as far as I´m concerned the marketing never referred back to the "UNITE THE SEVEN" slogan after those plans were scrapped.
Likely true, since they switched to "Unite The League" for JL. My guess for the seventh, though, is Shazam since 1) his movie was already scheduled to come before JL2, and 2) he's in Justice League: WAR which seems to have informed the originally-planned story somewhat.

Absolutely right. At this rate for DC, why rush? Quality over quantity. We may not be getting any younger, but I don't want to bury my head in the sand to every DC film I see because the quality of story or character development/accuracy sucks.
While i wholeheartedly agree with what you said. I do feel if the DCEU had been better managed from the start, we would be getting 2-3 consistently good films a year already by now.
As much as I like the MCU, consistently good is less preferable than consistently special, which is what I feel we got with Nolan's films and Man of Steel/BvS, because those projects had a lot of breathing room.
MCU has consistent quality, but a lot of it winds up being forgettable or unmeaningful despite being a good time. I don't want that to be DC's blueprint. SS and JL are signs of a machine trying to spit out films faster than they should be, to me.
I do not endorse quantity over quality in a movie franchise, especially one i have a vested interest in like the DCEU. However with that said, there is no reason we shouldn't have a well run DCEU at this point. They really should be able to release 3 top class films a year without much problem. This hasnt happened, as things have been rushed, chopped and changed so much, so far in the DCEU, its become laughable, to my great disappointment.
I wasnt comparing MCU to the DCEU but since you mentioned it, I think the MCU does have its flaws certainly but yes as a whole it has been managed to a better degree than the DCEU so far. I love DC and want nothing more than the films to be as good as i no they can be, thats why i hope WB can turn things around and give us the DCEU we should have got from the start. Not an MCU carbon copy but something even better.
I know you weren't directly comparing it to the MCU, but I was because I think it's the only point of standard to draw to as they're the most successful model.
With their model as successful as it is, I still wonder if they'd have better quality movies on average (instead of most of them just being 'good' instead of the occasional 'special' film) if we maybe had one less film crammed into each year.
I agree that WB's handling has been a mess, and unnecessarily so. There's no good reason they can't at least have a well-oiled machine running. Your summary is just right. :)
I dont think its the time frame between films that stops the majority of the MCU movies from being great, instead of just good. For me, I think it was some of the choices the directors went in some of the movies, didn't really do the character justice and a lot of under developed villains, are what have held back some of the MCU films. There is also an overuse of humour in a lot of them. However i have been entertained by everyone that I've seen so they are doing what they are suppose to.
I agree with you that BvS certainly was 'special'.

The word 'magic' here is being used in the same way that it would be with any other film endeavor that, ideally, winds up with what people call 'movie magic', where you go see something that makes you happy. It used to be a common sentiment, before everyone got so cranky.
Either way, I think you're overreacting to a harmless word choice.
If it doesn't result in magic, that's unfortunate, but that's the point of stating a hypothetical ideal - you're hoping for a scenario that should sensibly lead to that ideal.

Well, sort of. Snyder is responsible for the current mess WB find themselves in. If an earthquake hit a city and the city had to rebuild, not surprising the quake would come up in discussion.

All they have to right now do is let Wan make a great Aquaman movie and keep rolling forward with a new angle on Cavill's Superman (which is in the works). Snyder's films are behind us.

Snyder's decisions were very unpopular. Even by going in a drasticly different direction, that is addressing it. I wouldn't be surprised if later movies have a lot of 'gentle' retcons.

I don't know if most of this requires any undoing so much as simply more movies providing clarity or a wider lens to other areas not explored yet.
In a future movie, we can see that Jason Todd survived somehow, or that there are other Robins. This doesn't have to be a retcon so much as additional information, which unfolds afterward for the sake of storytelling drama, just as it did with the comics. We all believed Jason was dead for years, and that gave the concept potency with fans.
I was hoping for Tim Drake to be this Batman's new Robin soon, and for Red Hood to appear later after we learn about Nightwing/Dick too, but that seems a lot less obvious of a path to go now.
Same goes for Batman being more detectivey. All we need to address that issue is to show him doing more detectivey stuff in the next movie. This doesn't require retconning, as BvS's Batman was clearly off his normal gourd, and we don't always see every aspect of Batman in each movie anyway, depending on the story focus.
As for Batman killing, that's the only one that I would say requires a major retcon (like, say, they do the Flashpoint idea to soft-reboot Batman with a new actor as many fans have suggested)... but this is only if you can't stand the thought of Batman ever having crossed the line to any degree. I think most people would be pleased enough with him trying to redeem himself, as I suspect JL originally intended for him, or simply with him just never doing it again and leaving the mistake in the past.
All of these are things I would love to see too, even though I liked BvS more than you seem to have, but I don't think WB necessarily has to go out of their way to blow up the past movies in order to have a good universe moving forward from here.
Outside of the last issue with Batman, which is more of a die-hard fan complaint (and rightly so), it should be smooth sailing. Aquaman and Shazam won't have any baggage, and all the news about Superman seems to be suggesting that WB and Cavill want what vocal fans want: a brighter Supes. It should be easy to provide that without retconning anything.

The focus in this movie was perfect to showcase his detective skills, and he apparantly had none.
You can't really excuse his lack of detective skill for being off his gourd if he has the focus to design a suit and weapons to fight a Kryptonian. And detective skills are not complex, it's not something you just forget. He was blinded by his mission and focused, but his detective skills would have only helped him in that.

This is a little self-defeating. You say he had no detective skills, but then you describe a significant result of his detective skills within the movie.

I think it's possible you're right about him not getting it, but it could be he does get it and just wanted to do something intense and ugly for story purposes. I also think it could be smoothed over with further character progression instead of retconned.
Personally, I enjoyed the sense of shock about it being portrayed in a way that made me uncomfortable, and respected the balls of commitment that took. The end of the movie, with Bruce expressing a desire for redemption, kept me from being too angry, because I was hopeful for an emotional character arc surrounding it.
JL was the prime opportunity to give us that character arc, but it being gutted may have robbed us of the potential. Maybe Matt Reeves can do it.

This isn't a retcon though. A retcon is going back and changing something, not just leaving it alone as it is.

Oh come on. Don't try and misrepresent what we saw like that. The kryptonite was not the result of detective skills. It was the result of lazily stealing from Luthor who was shown to be a far superior detective.

I mean, he had to figure out it existed, figure out what it was and where to get it/who had it, track those people and figure out what they were up to with it, uncover what it would do, when and how to steal it, how to weaponize it in multiple forms, and then develop a strategy to employ it, which considers a number of other variables framed around studying Superman's character and behavioral traits.
I'm not saying he was shown to be as mentally impressive as Lex. Obviously Lex stole the show there. But the theme is that he's angry and messy, not covering all the usual bases. He just wants the means to the end as quickly and violently as necessary.
Believe it or not, this has actually been the case in the comics. In A Lonely Place of Dying, Tim sees Batman slipping in a very similar manner, getting angry and sloppy, and getting hurt because of it. That was how Tim became Robin.
Kinda hope Tim tries to help Batman out of his hole in the solo movie coming up too, since he didn't quite climb out of it in JL.

It was originally going to be a two-parter, and then the eventual one-parter not only had something like an hour chopped off of it's original runtime, but a considerable amount of what remained of the final two hours was reshot with entire concepts (like Darkseid) scrapped...
I think there was plenty of room for a character arc in all that, especially given there are some whispers of him feeling remorseful and displaying a desire to redeem himself. Also consider that Aquaman, Flash, and Cyborg were going to have more going on with their character development, so it stands to reason that there's a chance Bruce had more too.

Being off his gord is a pathetic excuse. He is not off his gord in any way, he is just obsessed. He can infiltrate a gala, build an exosuit, keep in physical shape, maintain martial arts skills etc. To laps so completely in such basic skills is....hard to believe, and it seems far more likely he simply does not have those skills.

That's not the theme. He covers all bases for his mission just fine, and he isn't shown to be messy or any less competent in the stuff he does choose to do. He simply is shown as not have any detective ability in BvS.

I own and have read all Batman comics, I know the story well. And that comparison is not at all apt.
Tim showed his detective skill by deducing Batman's identity. It wasn't showing Batman as lacking in detective skill, it was showing Batman in grief and that he needed people in his life.

I mean....those moments were so rare. Yeah, a few nice flashbacks when he was a kid, and he kissed Lois. 99% of the film he was a mopey schmuck.

I hated that. To me, they have no chemistry and it seemed like a poor attempt to make the movie 'serious'.

I mean....we saw so little hints of him being a smiling cheery person, most of which we did see were flashbacks. You can take those flashbacks and assume that is who he is most of the time, but I think the movie showed him who he is most of the time as we saw him in present day as Clark and when he was wandering and as Superman...almost always moping.

That's basically Dean Cain's costume. People at the time already whinged about Superman being too corny and over-the-top, and it was Zack's task to get a post-Nolan culture to take Supes seriously (following Nolan's personally crafted blueprint, uncoincidentally).
The costume wouldn't have worked then, not for that project - but it might now that tastes are changing again.
Everything is dependent on the cultural context of the times. Even Adam West's Batman versus Michael Keaton's. The 'snakeskin' was the sensible choice at the time.
The Avengers set the tone for what pop culture wants in this era of superhero movies, but that wasn't apparent until Man of Steel's half-baked 'dourness' criticism, and then fully confirmed after BvS got the same complaint.
Can't blame them for responding to previous Superman criticism and meeting the vocal demand for his stories to be as interesting, grounded, and serious as Batman's. They couldn't have foreseen the audience having such a fickle, extreme change of heart suddenly because of one popular movie.
It's not basically Cain's costume, It IS Reeve's costume, and it's just one take on a comic accurate costume.
Getting people to take Supe's seriously is not a hard task...it isn't. Just treat the character with respect, and make him less obviously campy than the Donnor movies. Numerous directors could have handled that task without issue.

I mean, the S shield is subtly differently shaped to a degree that only
the most deeply picky fans would scrutinize over with any fervor, the
belt buckle is square on one and round on the other, and the boots' "v" point goes down instead of up on one. Most people probably never noticed any of that, because it's frankly trivial.
They're effectively the same costume unless you are desperate to find the smallest difference, of which there are three - maybe four if you think the slightly longer cape is significant.
It's bright pajamas (Reeve) versus slightly darker/sort of shiny pajamas (Cain). Very basic design mirror otherwise.
And yes, while these are comic accurate in a 2 + 2 sense, they have also been mocked in pop culture. Accuracy does not automatically equate to praise in all cases - mostly in hardcore fandoms, again.
You yourself cited the underwear on the outside, but we also know that Batman was the 'cool one' from 89 up to 2012 partly because of his dark color palette feeling more 'realistic', and therefore more relatable.
This isn't just about comparing the costumes though, because that same themed consensus applied to all aspects of the characters. Superman was mistakenly generalized as 'smiles all the time, saves cats from trees, way too many powers, never has to worry about losing', where Batman was 'deals with real crime in a real setting, is human and therefore stakes are real'.
Even Batman was altered to be taken more seriously in live action for that period of time. All-black, supernatural stuff stripped away, etc.

Most of these people weren't friends. I was typically scrolling by comments sections of people I've never met, or chatting with random people about movies. Some of it was in older, pre-DCEU parts of the internet that have since been buried by post-DCEU chatter using similar words, making it difficult to "just Google".
Still, the argument of 'my anecdotal evidence is more real than yours because I experienced it this way' is pretty soupy. Dunno how you missed it, but being that it's anecdotal, it's not really something you can easily deliver in a court-based way. I'll see what I can provide though.

My point was that ALL the costumes except basically Injustice and DCEU costumes are comic accurate, and thus very similar. This, it's the small differences that do count. Cain's costume has a different S, a larger shield and a different belt. Yes, minor differences, but significant because they are all accurate adaptations of a single design.

I mean, I'm fine as long as I think it remains somewhat true to the original design. Even that isn't strictly necessary.
I don't mind the Injustice one although hate the armor....although it makes sense plotwise, more than it did in the N52.
I didn't like the MoS costume because it was so, so, so fark. Maroon and navy and gold instead of red, blue and yellow. And I hate the snakeskin shit....same as the Spider-man costume in the Webb films. Just wasn't a fan.
I really don't know why they had to go and texturize it like that. It doesn't make it look alien, it makes it look like a 2010s attempt at a superhero costume.
An alien look would be some sort of futuristic spandexy type material that wasn't at all spandex. Honestly I think there are numerous cosplay costumes that look better, but that's just me.
I think they were going specifically for 'alien chainmail' more than just any kind of alien feel. That's the logic behind the texture. It's usually not that visible anyway, so I don't think about it while watching.
My big whinge about the Snyder Superman suit is the blocky, weird shaped ab padding. haha
And, of course, in JL they airbrushed the muscles to hell and it looks weird.
I'm surprised you don't like at least the TASM2 Spidey suit. A lot of people went bonkers over how comic accurate they felt it was. I can't say I hate any of the Spider-Man film suits, but I have preferences on the little details like the lens shape or whatever.
Agree on Injustice and New 52. They just seem clunky and overdone in places. Also not a fan of the turtleneck look for Supes. lol
I like something a little simpler looking, too. Rebirth sits nicely with me, but I miss the red boots a bit. The darker blue contrasting with the almost glowing red is nice. :)

I have a strong dislike of the basketball texture. This was meant to be a costume Parker made himself at home. What kind of material is that?

The reborn costume was great, then they bought the trunks back....sigh.
The restored color image you posted looks better, but it is still darker than I would prefer. Just reminds me that I think less of Snyder for making everything so damn monochrome.

1. The gladiators lived thousands of years ago in the times of swords and shields. They wouldn’t be able to survive a gunshot, let alone a Kryptonian or a god. Face it. Wearing that armor is preparing for failure. Like a sheep ready for slaughter.
2. It is not worth sacrificing the safety of one’s entire body for a little extra mobility. Besides, aquakinesis.
The Atlanteans are a much more ancient civilization than our own. By that standard, the JL armor is useless, too, because no doubt modern weaponry could get through that, too. Do you honestly expect them to dress Aquaman in Kevlar, lol?
They are also much more advanced technologically and magically, so yes, I expect him to be wearing something more practical.

Well he got full body armor in JL already, and it seems like scale or full-plate armor, so that would be even more protective than chainmail, but again, not sure it would be that great against bullets. ...Though then again, I’m sure all Atlantean armor is better than what we’ve got.
Also he could be butt naked if he wants, considering his body can survive the depths of the ocean, so I’m not sure what the complaint is lol

Aquaman is bulletproof. The armor isn't for bullets. It's for close quarters gladiator-style weapons combat.
Also, it's common to have different types of armors for different situations. Batman does this too.

Yeah, I mean, I think the 'chain scales' are the ideal look for Aquaman, and probably more useful more of the time, but the gladiator approach is perfectly acceptable too.

I think Momoa is wonderful casting as the King of the Seven Seas. I can't wait to see his performance in his solo film. It's a pity he's gotten a rocky start with JL but I have faith in Wan and his cast and crew. Can't wait to see how the underwater scenes are going to look, I have high expectations but I feel like the technology is here to pull it off and it's only going to look better from now on.
Side-note: I wonder how much they've actually shot underwater because they're shooting dry-for-wet (which makes sense) but I'd want to limit the amount of shots of doing that. I hope they have some back of the heads' shots or anything where the hair moves likes it does underwater so they at least don't have to animate the hair in that shot. Just a thought but still, the fewer VFX shots the better :P
Wow, Infinity War has already passed BvS, in only 6 days.
It is impressive. However, I think with Deadpool 2 coming out May 18th and then Solo one week after that I think you’ll see Infinity War ticket sales have a much bigger fall when DP2 hits theaters. It will have another good weekend this weekend no doubt. I’m just trying to explain that I think it has had such a great opening and week not only because it was highly anticipated, but that it’s front loaded because the same audience is going to end up most likely seeing Solo for sure but even Deadpool 2 for the adults and teenagers. So most everyone that is going to see Infinity War has already gone to watch it. Most of the money it will make after DP2 comes out will be repeat viewings.
I’ll hand it to Disney and say it was a smart move to move it up a week to April 27th instead of May 4th. That gave it 3 weeks instead of just 2 between opening weekend and DP2.
If it does hit 2 billion I don’t think it will get like 2.5 billion more like 2.1 or 2.2... it’s definitely a possibility that it could make 2 1/2 billion seeing that it just opened in China, but it will depend on what it does this and next weekend both domestic and foreign to see whether or not it will reach 2 1/2 billion. Because again once DP 2 comes out it will take a pretty big fall and then when Solo comes out the next week it will still be in the top 5 but only because there won’t be much competition for it other than DP2 and Solo. With that said, Solo and DP2 will take all the money.
I thought Solo was just going to do OK at the box office but after hearing how well the pre-sales are doing it might actually get close to or get over a billion dollars at the BO. Deadpool 2 should come in around $750-$850 million worldwide.
Not surprised. Good reviews and 10 years of buildup can do that. It truly is one of the biggest moments in history for the CBM genre.

There's no doubt in my mind that if DCEU movies were great they would have crushed Marvel. BvS had record breaking opening weekend even when it was critically panned and had bad word of mouth. People were highly interested in it. Then it had a record breaking 2nd weekend drop of 70%. If that movie had amazing reception and good legs, it would have easily passed The Avengers. And JL would have been even bigger.
Seriously, DC didn't even need to build a universe for 10 years. 2-3 high quality movies was all they needed. Now that the brand is tainted and they lost all credibility, it won't be nearly as easy.

They could have even started with a JL movie on the scale of IW.
Open with the Watchtower in space. Have the trinity communicating. Or Have Superman and WW talking and cut to Bats on Gotham on a gargoyle talking to them on radio.
Slowly introduce the threat. Introduce other characters. Show the world and set up points for individual characters movies. Have inmates escape for Bats to catch, some reason for Supes or GL to go to space, WW could still have been a period piece, etc etc.
Give us versions of the characters true to the comics that we like, and the audience would have cheered. It would have set amazing records because people love these characters.
But no. We got Necksnap man and drunk not a detective Batman.
Not really. Jl didn't have 10 years of buildup or 19 movies behind it. Even with three critically acclaimed, it's incredibly doubtful that it qould have done the same thing as infinity war.
