on 'Avengers: Infinity War' beat a record that 'The Dark Knight' held for nearly 10 years

In 2008, The Dark Knight set the record for biggest Thursday night opening for a superhero movie with $30.6 million. It's taken nearly ten years for another superhero movie to come along and dethrone it, but last night it finally happened.

Marvel's Avengers: Infinity War opened to $39 million, according to The Hollywood Reporter. It now sits above The Dark Knight (#2 with $30.6 million) and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (#3 with $27.7 million).

Obviously ticket prices are more expensive today than they were in 2008 when The Dark Knight came out, but the record books don't pay attention to that. The Dark Knight had a great run, besting even Marvel's beloved Black Panther ($25.2 million).

I'd imagine people who saw Avengers: Infinity War will comment on it below, so beware of spoilers! And if you do comment, try to refrain from posting spoilers if you can.

    Damn. Adjusted for inflation I'm sure dark knight is higher. I doubt infinity war will hold this record for 10 years like dark knight did (dark knight also didn't have the benefit of 3d)

      Actually, according to my calculations (ie, Google) $30.6m works out to $34.8m with inflation accrued from July 2008 to today.

      And yes, it's very likely this record might be knocked down by the sequel next year.

    RT score is not so good (currently at 85 %). Do critics really think that Infinity War is worse than Thor; Ragnarok (which was awful BTW) ?

    Anyway, I am not a Marvel fan and probably won't see Infinity War until the dust settles a little bit and the theaters are not so crowded.

      First off, that’s a good score. Second, consider Winter Soldier - one of the best Marvel movies of all - has an 89%, being lower than the usual 90’s is probably a good thing. Critics have bad taste lol

            I think anyone who doesn't like it will not like it for 2 reasons. 1) they didn't know this was part 1 in a 2 parter. 2) they haven't kept up with the MCU so they can't follow the story/have the same emotional tie to the characters.

        Whoever insists that there's a conspiracy by Disney to buy all the critics obviously wasn't paying attention to the sub-80% RT scored MCU films anyways, but for whatever flaws the film may have, I'm glad it won't serve the purpose of the tin foil hat crowd at least.

      I'm not really sure what you're arguing here. I personally think most of the MCU films are pretty mediocre, but an 85% RT score is actually very good. That doesn't mean that the film is good (see previous comment about most MCU films being mediocre, despite their RT scores), but to argue that 85% is not a high score is delusional.

      I have moviepass, which is the only reason why I'm going to see it in the theaters. But, yeah it has an 84% on RT and dropping, kind of surprised by this. Anyways, I will see it hopefully this weekend.

          I said MCU standards. The MCU has been getting extremely high scores, and this is a film that should be having a score as high as BP's. If BvS had an 84%, I'm sure some people would still be shocked and say that the score should be higher.

            Honestly, this is the type of movie critics generally HATE, so an 84% is a godsend.

            Being this overstuffed with characters, plotlines, and especially Action everywhere (which I didn't mind in the slightest cause it was awesome) was bound to affect it somewhat. It's a miracle critics liked it at all.

            To be fair, Black Panther (though I quite liked it) is INSANELY overrated, so maybe that's why 84% feels like such a step down.

            To be fair, that's cause not everyone agrees (on both fronts). I think we can both at least acknowledge that the two movies more or less skated by on their social relevance than the actual quality of the films, but I liked WW better than BP.

            They're both totally different films, so i cant really compare the two. WW started great, especially when she was on her island, but it got real boring after. The only thing that was worth watching after, was the no mans land scene, which lasted two minutes.

            Yeah, I don't think it's fair to compare the two either.

            The major nitpick I have with WW is Ares needed to be much more of a presence and philosophical challenge for Diana, and his CG needed major work (or they should have gone for something more practical - or something that mostly obscures his face).

            The major nitpick I have with BP is that we don't get a lot of insight into T'Challa's heart and soul and why he is right and Killmonger is wrong. We can extrapolate from his choices, but the actual character growth needed some more padding to feel rounded and organic.

            Basically the same as the Ares nitpick, but about the hero instead of the villain. The weak CG complaint applies to the final battle in both.

            Still, those are nitpicks, and they're both awesome movies. The CG is excellent outside of those moments.

            I would say that BP is full of extremely important messages for modern times that I hope people listen to carefully, and that WW is a touching story of finding grace and purpose in dark times, while doubling down on what you know is the right thing to do in your heart, even if it's the hard thing. Difficult to complain about either, overrated or not. :)

            I'm waiting til the crowd quiets down a bit. Gonna take my mom on Mother's Day. She's a fan too - has a SHIELD coffee mug and everything! haha :)

            I expect it's gonna be amazing, but I'm keeping a lid on the excitement pot so I don't over-hype.

            Of course the score should be higher...the score should be 100% for every movie. But I'm not gonna sit here and say anything over 80% RT is bad.

            And yes, other people would be saying it should be higher if it were BvS... You would still be praising it.

        Wouldn't that put them on one of the lowest MCU RT score ever? For a movie of this magnitude, and given their high RT scores most of the time, its bad. Or lets just say.....not great.

    Well yeah, this is due to inflation, that's all. Very misleading, but like it was mentioned fanboys do not care. Either way, congrats to Marvel, I will be seeing the movie very soon. Also, I do not see any superhero movie beating out TDK any time soon, it was too grounded in realism with the best performance by a villain ever. I do hope in my lifetime we can get one that in general people say it was better, but who knows maybe we never will. I am just truly enjoying this comic book movie renaissance period ;)) What a great time!

      I think it had two best performance villains, frankly. Heath obviously stole the show, but Aaron Eckhart was very potent and intense as well.

      It's just such a strong film that keeps you on the edge of your seat and makes you care about the characters.

    Part of my understanding from of the negative reviews, some critics didn't like the dour ending and that the film feels overstuffed.

      The film is actually pretty good. But it is definitely overstuffed and at times just does not make any sense other than to push it along. The ending is not as dour as it is a fish hook caught in your mouth with someone pulling at the other end. They will get everyones money.

        The ending definitely will not stand, but I liked the THOUGHT behind it. It's probably the entire reason why Marvel scrapped calling the fourth one "Infinity War Part Two."

          I think that this film will either be loved or hated. I was kind of in-between because it had great sequences but the story as a whole made no sense. I was especially pissed of and insulted when a certain stone was to be found when a certain someone shows up only to mask how ridiculous that part of the story was to move it along. The theater was more in awe about that old character that showed up rather than pay attention to how non believable it was. They got the job done there.
          So many other silly scenes i had lost count. NOT deserving of the score. This is a 60-65/100

            Yeah, when a certain "red face" guy showed up, there was an audible gasp. lol What about that scene didn't make sense to you? Was it Thanos actually caring about sacrificing Gamora? I thought that bit of humanization kinda came out of the left field considering how much Gamora has spoken about how much she hated Thanos beforehand.

            In what way out of 3 f-ing movies did we get any inclination of just how much T loved G?? Definitely not in this film. So where? And what is exactly Gs power? Why are we told how powerful she is constantly and we never got to see it. They did not sell me on that scene no matter if Jesus showed up on that cliff. They did that for a reason. Marvel does that with so many films. Audience just glass eyed.

            Favorite does not mean what that character on the cliff meant when he explained what he explained. If that was the case then Thanos would have been searching for her rather than stones. Thanos had zero emotion when 'others' died. Non believable.

            What does Thanos' emotions towards "others" have to do with his emotions toward Gamora? The Keeper said that retrieving the Soul Stone required a sacrifice of that which he loved the most... never did he say how much he had to love it; just the object that received most of his affection, however little or much. Gamora was the only one who satisfied the requirement, obviously.

            Sounded to me like Maw did quite a bit for Thanos, was one of his children, never failed him, yet did not even warrant an expression when told of his death.
            Are you seriously going to say that the forced bullshit we saw between Gamora and Thanos was legitimately heartfelt and real? Are we just going to slot that into 'its just a comic book movie relax dude?' In over 3 films we never got the sense for Thanos' deep deep love for Gamora. Never. Especially not in IW.

            If im not mistaken, GotG told us that the children of Thanos were all miserable and hated him. Yet Thanos just 'took' to Gamora for no apparent reason other than to move this particularly awful story of the soul stone forward and cover it with chocolate by having red skull show up out of nowhere -where he has no choice but to be a keeper of a stone on a mountain top for 100 years?
            So bullshit im laughing while typing.

            True. I agree with you there. I was even nodding my head when Gamora burst out laughing, thinking "Red face" had Thanos stumped because he never truly cared for anyone, so sacrificing anything other than himself would mean nothing. I could see that they TRIED humanizing Thanos by including the flashbacks with child Gamora, but still, it felt jarring.

            But they do need A reason to showcase how everyone can (ULTRA MAJOR SPOILER) come back to life. And the only person who can do that is Thanos (which he probably will have a change of heart in the next one).

            That would honestly be a piss-poor follow-up. Granted, Thanos growing a conscience and undoing everything he worked so hard to accomplish would be a hard thing to write believably, but the alternative option just makes no sense.

            Seeing as how Adam Warlock was introduced in the After credits scene of GOTG2 and that he played a prime role in the Infinity Gauntlet and Infinity Wars comics, maybe he'll have something to do with it. Still though... It'll be anticlimatic.

            The fact you believe they cornered themselves speaks to how high they raised the stakes. I have a couple of theories on how they can resolve the conflict based on what we saw, but obviously there's going to be a real cost.

            Just cause they say they won't doesn't mean anything. They'll say anything to hide spoilers nowadays. Hell, the trailer to Infinity War in of itself is one big lie (Hulk never appeared during the Wakanda battle and Thanos only had two infinity stones in his gauntlet when he attacked Cap).

            Infinity War already broke off significantly from the comics. And Marvel Studios is not one to rely on Deus Ex Machinas to come resolve their conflicts at the last minute.

            I seriously doubt they'll rely on Thanos to undo the damage he did. It'd be a cheap resolution to the problem. I still see enough variables in the movie to formulate a couple of scenarios they could use to at least partially restore things the way they were, so I'm sure Avengers 4 will turn out fine.

            Yeah, it probably won't be Thanos. These were just my initial first thoughts after seeing the movie since they characterized him somewhat sympathetically.

            Since Marvel can't use Silver Surfer yet, Adam Warlock and Captain Marvel will likely be instrumental in turning the tide like they are in the comics.

    MOS/Snyder pissed off a lot of fans which affected BvS' opening. BvS/Snyder further pissed off many more fans resulting into JL's disastrous opening. TDK had brilliant reviews, and its predecessor was widely liked as well.

    Matt Reeves The Batman will beat this record. That being said Infinity War was good but did not live up to the hype for me. I loved how it ended tho and it did have a lot of surprises. I guess my opinion will change on multiple viewings and plus I watched it online I need to see it on the big screen. Thanos was awesome and easily the best Marvel villain, with lots of depth and emotion. I guess my main complaint was the action scenes didn’t have that level of epic ness like the first avengers or civil war airport scene. I also feel like we don’t get enough time with the characters it doesn’t have any breathing room which I understand with a lot of characters. But with a second viewing I believe I will like it more. I have it as an 8/10

      No, matt reeves the batman doesn't stand a chance, BVS is still fresh in people's head. The Batman sequel may have a chance though.

        They key here is that Infinity War had an inconceivably MASSIVE hype going for 6 years. I can't even fathom DC building anything close to that in the span of 2 movies...Assuming they somehow pull a miraculous, mind blowing movie with the first one, what could they possibly do for an encore to get this much buzz?

Too bad the script for BvS, wasn't strong enough to live up to the hype, the way The Dark Knight did. BvS was on track to land around the 1.6 billion dollar mark. It just needed more comic booky action, dry humor from Batman, and Superman to smile more.😊

    Its going to break all kinds of comic-book movie records this weekend and in the coming weeks. I do though think it will struggle against the records set by the new Star Wars movies, those movies are on a different level.

    Solo coming out a week or two after Deadpool is the true test of comic-book movies versus the Star Wars brand.

    One hell of a movie. They did a very "ballsy" move doing it like that and my audience was audibly shocked.
    I just wish that they toned down the humor. This time, it was actually more inappropriate than usual because the tone of the movie was quite serious and thus a lot of the jokes felt forced in to lighten the tension.

    And (Semi-spoilers, but not really):
    I cannot fathom how Ant-Man & The Wasp and Captain Marvel can take place AFTER this movie. They've both got to be prequels.

      I watched the movie and it’s one of the most boring movies I have ever watched. They cracked jokes at almost every scene. And Spider-Man is the worst I have ever seen. The guy wouldn’t stop making jokes out of everything. I don’t know what everyone here is seeing in this movie. It’s just a movie to make an excuse of another one.

        Spider-Man and Quill were the worst. They both needed to shut their traps. We know that both of the "Peters" tend to be a jokesters, but not at a time like this.

        And I'm not saying I hate humor in general. The movie just utilized it inappropriately.

          I think they did fine; the movie still had plenty of tense and sad moments, especially building up to the climax, as the gravity of the situation was closing in to the heroes.

            I just didn't find it funny. This was perhaps the only Marvel movie for me where the humor legitimately didn't work. In other MCU movies, I think they had a tendency to rely on humor too much, but most of the time, I still laughed. But in this one, the stakes were high enough where I just didn't feel like laughing 90% of the time because I was invested in the story (and trying to hear the dialogue over the crowd laughing too).

            Don't get me wrong - I loved the movie - but it has its share of flaws and this is one of them for me.

    Fun fact. The Dark Knight made 683.5Mil domestically after adjusted gross. It made 312Mil from DVD/Blue-ray, which is the highest for any superhero movie. 683.5Mil + 312Mil = 996Mil domestically. Making it the highest of any superhero again domestically. And it’s massively impressive considering the prices back then are lower than today.

    It took ten years, inflation and over a dozen Marvel superheroes in the same movie to beat The Batman. Now that’s an impressive accomplishment. Btw Avengers IW was pretty good. I give it an 8/10 and Thanos was a legit villain.

    You have to hand it to Marvel I thought Infinity War was brilliant. Ok so there's a few misplaced jokes that kind of diffuse the tension but the ending was something else I thought.

    I only wish DC can get their house in order and build towards something similar!
