In February, Joss Whedon announced that he was no longer writing or directing Batgirl. The only reason he gave at the time was that he didn't have a story. Last night at the premiere of Avengers: Infinity War, Whedon elaborated on why he decided to exit Batgirl.

"It had been a year since I had first pitched the story. A lot happened in that year and I felt some of the elements might not work as well and the story kind of just crumbled in my hands," Whedon told Variety. "There were elements that I just hadn't mastered that I... after a long time felt like I wasn't going to. So, I told people that I didn't have an idea, which isn't exactly true. I had an idea, it just didn't fit in the space that was left for it. It was a little heartbreaking because I was so excited about it, but I'm currently working on something of my own and there's nothing more exciting than that."

Since Whedon left Batgirl, Christina Hodson was brought in the write the script. We recently learned that Batgirl will be introduced in Birds of Prey before getting her own solo movie.

  Indeed it was pointless. But I'd still love to see what a guy like Whedon could have done with Batgirl. I mean, if we are to have a Batgirl movie, he's the best person for the job, by far. Such a shame.

        Dude, I get that you feel Marvel films can get repetitive and formulaic, but to rip on The Avengers is a silly move. It was THE original formula. You can't hate on that. You may be more justified in having an issue with THAT formula being overused in other subsequent films. But not The Avengers.

        I think Avengers is the worst phase 1 film besides Hulk. How exactly is Avengers the original formula? I never said anything about this.
        My complaints were that it seemed like a generic kids movie. It was too family friendly for my tastes and I really find Joss Whedons action scenes underwhelming. His movies look like a step above TV quality.
        Captain Americas costume was extremely goofy and it really made me have a hard time to take the film
        seriously when you had him running around in that goofy ass thing

        "Too family friendly for my tastes"... Dude, that's no different than the people ripping on BvS & MoS saying "it was too dark/not enough fun for my tastes", you're just on the other extreme. Since when was it a bad thing for a film to be "family friendly" or conversely when was it a bad thing for a film to be "dark/non-family friendly"??
        The Avengers and BvS are both wonderful films which I personally view as near-masterpieces in their own right. And yes, both had things to criticize, and I think each camp makes a bigger deal out of these issues than they actually are. Yes, Cap's costume was extremely goofy, and just looked like terrible cosplay. Doesn't make the movie shit. Yes, Superman looks gloomy and "depressed" in BvS. Doesn't make the movie shit either. (Obviously critics on both sides have other criticisms as well, but that's besides the point).

        I just said I think Avengers is overrated and I stand by that. I just don’t think, that besides teaming up superheroes together it’s all that groundbreaking especially in terms of filmmaking. It’s a very simple point A leads to point B leads to point C type of film. It was linear and there just wasn’t much depth to chew on or anything. Maybe watching heroes bicker, joke and fight together is someone else’s idea of a masterpiece but i need a little more than that.
        This is why I was never really all that excited for JL or expected to enjoy it all that much. I always prefer solo superhero films as they are more focused and tend to be a little more rich in depth.
        It’s not that I think Aveners was a horrible movie but given that i found it too lighthearted for a nerdy comic book film right out of the gate I found it difficult to feel engaged... then once you factor in that it’s just a simple romper stomper popcorn flick with nothing to really chew on I think it becomes
        clear why I don’t consider it to be a masterpiece as so many other fanboy wankers out there do.

        I wouldn't say it was the original formula. That belongs to Superman by Dick Donner. That being said it was reforged by Sam Raimi with Spider-Man and then reforged again to its utmost in Avengers. I liked Avengers but it feels dated at times. But I enjoy it when I watch.

        Sometimes the films are actually deserving of the scores they get but often times they’re not.

        Exactly. Calling Avengers generic is silly. It was quite literally the first of it's kind, and Marvel may have arguably created other movies since then attempting to capture the magic of IM1 and the Avengers and perhaps inadvertently made that style seem "generic", but Avengers was a unique event when it came out. To see Cap, Iron Man and Thor on the same screen after their individual films was like worlds colliding in a way that was never seen before. It was magical.

        in terms of the cinematic universe thing it may have been the first of its kind, but the story wasn't exactly what I would called unique or original. I will admit, back then I wasn't really invest in the MCU and had only seen some of the movies so I didn't really understand the novelty of it. That being said, aside from the characters all interacting for the first time which I can see how people who WERE invested would have thought was fun, the rest of the movie was nothing overly special in my opinion

        thats the problem tbh. Its been confusing as hell ever since I saw the Avengers for the first time. I thought it was an okay fun movie. But I do distinctly remember not liking a lot of the dialogue and quips and such. I remember thinking a lot of them were just lame and possibly forced. Some of it even felt out of character based on what I had seen in previous movies. A lot of moments just felt goofy almost and out of place. This also played in to how the movie seemed to be very lacking in weight or intensity in my opinion. Im find with some fun banter but I just didn't like how a lot of it was done in The Avengers. Keep in mind though, this has nothing to do with liking DC more than marvel. This was before I even developed any sort of preference. Was just starting to get into comics at the time. Though this IS originally what lead me down the path of liking DC more than Marvel. The Avengers just didn't resonate with me. But The Dark Knight did. So yes, I also personally found the original avengers overrated. I remember thinking to myself "THIS is what people have been flipping out over?". I think the Russos are a lot better personally. Winter Soldier and Civil War(despite some of my issues with that movie) would considerably stronger in my opinion

It is unfortunate they had to use his talents in the DCEU to try and fix Snyder's unwatchable JL in a timeframe that was nearly impossible to make WB's changes.

But was he brought in to "save" Justice League all along, and Batgirl was just the cover story?🤔 I wouldn't be surprised if Snyder and Whedon never even communitcated during post-production. Putting a PR spin on it, WB tried to initially imply that it would be a collaboration on Justice League. It seems that WB booted Whedon off Batgirl, and he likely agreed that it wasn't a good fit for him anymore.

    I disapprove Batman/Batgirl relationship, I know that Batgirl had a little crush on Batman in the animated series in the beginning but it wasn't reciprocal, and she was serious with Dick when she had time to not be in her costume. The Batman Beyond comic and The Killing Joke are just ruining the characters for me.

    Marvel fans are probably the happiest and most excited fans right now. It would be great for me to feel the same, but no, I grew up with Batman, Superman and Flash. I can't love Marvel more than I love DC. But I do give credit where it's due. I'm not bitter and jealous like most of you here.
    It's kinda like when Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, Ronaldinho, etc. were applauded by fans from opposing teams after amazing performances. You can simply appreciate and praise great things regardless of who makes them.
    Remember we all win with great movies. It doesn't have to be a competition all the time. Maybe DC will be amazing again, but right now it's Marvel's time.

      I give you that, Marvel fans are probably the happiest and most excited fans right now, most of them loves those movies even if :
      - they don't read the comics (common people)
      - they have never seen a TV cartoon like we did with Batman TAS or Justice League TAS (X-men and Spider-Man excluded)
      - they didn't have the opportunity to watch high/great level quality animated movies like The Dark Knight Returns or The Flashpoint Paradox or Under the Red Hood etcetera

We fight with each other because Superman does not wear red panties now, because Christopher Reeve will be Superman forever, because Flash is not blond, because Aquaman is hawaiian, because Superman snaps Zod's neck even if he snaps Doomsday neck with his two fists in The Death of Superman... try to enjoy a DC universe where everybody has his own Batman, Superman, Flash...

        I don't think there's anything wrong with that. Some people like comics, some like video games, some like action figures, some like the movies. It's all good. I don't think you need to know the source material to be a fan.
        DCEU problems go beyond their lack of comic book accuracy. The movies have been underwhelming to say the least. Marvel is making higher quality movies while still capturing the essence of their characters and making them high value. I can't blame anyone for becoming a Marvel fan because of the movies.

        So why are you always complaining about details like a "not-blond-Flash", "hawaiian-Aquabro"? The way you describe Marvel's way is almost poetic, you say that Marvel still capturing the essence of their characters, but I don't remember a Tony Stark pissing in his armor in the comics or the animated series... Robert Downey Jr didn't become Tony Stark, Tony Stark became Robert Downey Jr and it's canon even in the comics now... you like the actor so you accept it, but when it comes to the actors you don't, you always refer to your CB knowledege as a reference.

        THe MCU versions of Iron Man, Spider Man, Thor, even Captain America are very unlike their comic book counterparts in my opinion. What works in a comic book or a cartoon doesn't necessarily work well in the cinematric world. DC's most successful live-action products are actually their CW TV series because they conform to a new TV genre of their own. DC is struggling because they haven't found the right cinematic formula yet for live-action two-hour plus movies. Actually that is the opinion of many DC comics writers interviewed on superhero or comics-related sites.

        My complaint about Aquaman and The Flash is mostly about their looks. I think their castings could have been better.
        Iron Man is probably my second least favorite MCU character, but at least he does look like Tony Stark.

    Bias exists, but only to a certain extent. MCU TV shows have gotten rotten scores, so it's not like they get a pass for everything.
    I don't think that a Marvel movie that is BvS or SS level bad would get a pass.

      True, but my point is that the MCU has now become a very established brand that pretty much sets the standard for the cinematic superhero genre (which is not the same as the comic book superhero genre). Many critics are wary oif raising a "contrarian" opinion against a leading brand and the "herd mentality" naturallly kicks in.

        Hard to tell since all their movies have been of acceptable quality at the very least.
        When they make a shitty movie, we'll know. But nothing suggests they will get a pass.

  Marvel doesn't make "comic book" movies. They created a different cinematic superhero genre. which is why they are successful.. DC movies are far more "comic book" oriented, sometimes even cartoonish, and that is why they appeal only to a much narrrower audience of true comic book fans.

    I don't think that's the issue. To me it's far more simple:
    Marvel has been able to make good movies, while the DCEU hasn't.
    I've seen movies of all different shapes and colors get lot praise. I don't think that's what's happening with DC.

I just think he couldn't get the story ge had to work in the DCEU as it currently exists. The jury is out on whether i think he could have delivered a decent Batgirl movie. I'd like to hear his idea though, out of curiosity if nothing else.

In terms of business models, audience perception, marketability,
marketing approach, and basically everything else to do with selling the
damn movies, DC is finished. They might make a good movie or two, but
after Justice League the DC Brand is now box office poison, possibly for
good.

  I am not that pessiimistic. I think that the DCEU can rebuild its core fanbase with two or three good niche movies, and, starting from that base, broader support for the franchise can diffuse to a wider audience as they progress to bigger ensemble movies. Actually, the franchise troubles are much more localized in the US market than elsewhere in the world. As I always like to remind readers here, Justice League was well received for example in Brazil and China. The problem is that the English-speaking critics, especially in the US and the UK, are the ones who set the tone on how movies are received.

I'd be willing to bet it's more that he's toxic, given the more and more revelations about how he treats women. It would be tough to make a Young-Powerful-Woman movie with that in everyone's prism.
Of course, reading the comments below, treating women with decency and respect is a pretty low priority for some of you. So, yeah, blame it on the fact that he couldn't save JL.

At least he's kind of honest, he admited that his idea was not a good one... not like Snyder that he refuses to admit that his work in the DCEU is not good.
