New 'Justice League' video reveals part of Lex Luthor's scene was a Joss Whedon reshoot

Simon Firsht is a cinematographer who has worked on shooting behind-the-scenes Blu-ray/DVD footage for movies like Wonder Woman and Justice League. Apparently he also helped out on some of the reshoots that Joss Whedon did on Justice League.

Firsht released a five minute reel of his recent work on YouTube over the weekend. Around the 2:32 mark in the video above, we see Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor against a green screen. The clapper behind him reveals that Firsht was working the camera and that Joss Whedon was the director. It appears to be dated September 23, 2017 as well.

It's already been confirmed that Zack Snyder shot the Lex Luthor/Deathstroke scene before he dropped out, so Whedon likely just changed some of Luthor's dialogue during the reshoots. Many of Snyder's original scenes were changed during reshoots. The most obvious that come to mind are Barry Allen talking to Bruce Wayne in his apartment about brunch, and Aquaman talking to Bruce Wayne in the water in Iceland.

Eisenberg said in a recent interview that none of his Justice League scenes were cut from the movie.

Now to see all the Snyder fanboys say how they don't like the scene now because Whedon played a part despite the fact they previously loved the scene when they thought it was all Snyder.

As for the scene itself i really liked it and even thought Eisenberg was ok in it, Deathstroke looked and sounded awesome and it was a nice set up of a film we most likely never get now.

      Not that you're asking, but I thought the scene was nonsensical from the start. Batman says Alfred's name out loud in front of the criminal *and* lets him go? And that weird unnecessary backflip. Shit was very unbatman from first viewing.

      That scene had elements of it that were fine, but it also had weird things in it. Like the really fake shot of Batman on the Gargoyle, Batman and the parademon somehow falling back onto the same roof, the conversation with the theif, and Batman letting the theif go. Other than those parts the scene was cool. Like the water tower moment and the lighting during the parademon explosion. It also allowed for us to actually see Batman on Gotham rooftops being Batman. Something BvS was completely lacking.

  - CGI is "good", it's not obvious and ugly like in his other reshoots

I'll be honest, I really enjoyed that scene overall, but Lex's dialogue at the very end always felt weird to me; "shouldn't we have a league of our own?" seemed like a weird and out of place thought, because at the end of BvS it seemed like Lex's larger plan was focused on potentially implicating the New Gods and Darkseid over the span of the next few films. But this line seemed like the focus suddenly shifted to dealing with the "metahumans" himself with his own league of villains on Earth.
Now knowing this was added during re-shoots makes a lot of sense, and I'm not surprised that Whedon shot that. No knock on him, but it seems like that line was forced setup by WB once they decided to abandon Zack's 2 part JL story (or originally 5 film saga as we now know), to shift focus from extraterrestrial players in the DCEU to Earth-based villains (Injustice League led by Lex), laying some seeds for a potential sequel without Zack, should they ever decide that to be a financially viable option.

The opening Batman scene was awesome as was Whedon's addition to the Superman resurrection scene (asking Bruce if he bleeds). Having Batman whine that he was in fact bleeding was terrible though. I thought Aquaman giving his inner feelings sitting on the lasso was cool too. Sorry, I am just more objective than most people about this. I even enjoyed the light heartedness he added to the final battle, having Superman and Cyborg laugh and even getting a booyah. Loved it.

      Crazy how they officially jumped from, "This is Snyder's movie"- during pre-release and first week of release. To - "Joss had big impact, Joss and WB ruined it" to now "75% or more of the footage of the theatrical cut is Whedon"....   I really liked the opening Batman scene. Superman’s quoting the “do you bleed” line was ruined a bit by that awful fake mouth and weird voice, though. I also didn’t have a problem with Aquaman revealing his feelings, and I genuinely appreciated the laughter after saving the world - that was the only moment of levity in the entire fight that actually felt natural and realistic and earned and didn’t break the gravity of the situation, which honestly makes me wonder if it was Whedon scene at all, considering most of the other quips he shoehorned in :P

    Honestly, I quite enjoyed JL up until his appearance. He became a cartoon character with no real emotions and an unbearable forced grin and quip constantly at the ready. It was so unnatural and broke everything we saw of him before, turning him into the cheesy, one-dimensional character MoS had worked so hard to reinvigorate with actual depth and personality and struggle. And the happiness was so forced and causeless; it just felt like he was insane and that the character arc was rushed and put into hyperdrive. Give me Snyder’s Superman scenes PLEASE.

Makes sense. Always kind of wondered what Snyder plan was, because everything with JL was pointing at some New Gods stuff for JL2, but this whole League of Doom post credits scene hinted otherwise. In a way I could still buy it was Snyder because, well, I love the guy, but he's known for cramming a little bit too much sometimes.

Still, New Gods has been confirmed. Let's hope they stick with it and knock it off the park. Always wanted to see that.

As for League of Doom, it could be cool, yeah. And Manganiello is on point for Deathstroke.

  I just watched the recent trailer. The Venom symbiote sounds exactly like Todd. And I'm already pissed that people are complaining his design. This is damn near perfect, design-wise. You really can't do any better, and yet you have some people saying that a Halloween costume would look better. People are so ungrateful these days.

      It's because he doesn't look that slimy in the comics. To me, it's a minor complaint (at least compared to the fact this movie will be devoid of Spiderman's original history with Venom). But it's easy to go heavy handed and completely fail when you try to apply realism to a supernatural concept.

      It would be nice if they do as it would be great to see an actual Spidey Vs Venom film and as Venom would already have his origin and backstory explored in this film you wouldn't need to devote a huge portion of the film to cover all that.

      Jesse Eisenberg didn't watch BvS, and had no problem stating it even during the promotional tour for the movie.
      And as we know, Snyder did not appear at any of the premieres of JL or even do any interviews for the promotional tour, so it's not hard to imagine he didn't see it. Not just out of it probably being a painful reminder of the tough times he endured with WB at his back, but also its woes paling in comparison to the time he spent away from his daughter, who committed suicide in his absence.

Great video! Loved seeing the Snyders. Little Diana needs her own movie. That little sound bite from Nolan was interesting. I think both Batman and Superman are in the same boat. As long as you keep Batman's edginess, and Superman's nobelness, you can play with their personalities a little bit. Fans pretend to be tougher critics than they really are. Give 'em an entertaining version of their favorite characters, and they'll accept it.

  Kevin Spacey is a huge actor and look at what happened to him.
  Now I'm not saying the two are comparable as far as morals go, but just in terms of people being above losing their job despite their reputation.
  And to go one step further, I doubt Whedon was "fired" in the traditional sense of WB bluntly telling him to "clear out your desk by morning" , but more of a slight nudging out the door after a somewhat mutual understanding that thing weren't working out.
  Because if not, then WB would have fought tooth and nail to keep him happy to convince him to stay.
