The Rock talks 'Black Adam' script, thinks it could start shooting in 2019 (video)

It's been a while since we've heard anything about The Rock's Black Adam movie, but Yahoo caught up with him recently while he was promoting his new movie Rampage and got an update.

“The script came in, it’s great, we’re working on it,” Johnson teased. “If things come together in the way we anticipate them coming together, that feels like a 2019 movie -- in production."

Johnson went on to praise Marvel's cinematic universe and said that DC is still finding their footing and tone, citing Wonder Woman and the upcoming Aquaman as movies that he was excited about. The Rock said that part what they're working on now with Black Adam is finding out how it connects to the rest of the DC Extended Universe. You can check out the full interview in the video above.

If Black Adam begins shooting in 2019 like The Rock hopes, it could be released in 2020 or 2021 at the latest. We may not have to wait that long though. A rumor says that Black Adam will be introduced in Suicide Squad 2 and that movie starts shooting later this fall.

I enjoyed his work except ones like the tooth fairy. Never watched it but it's not big on my to watch list so probably never will. He has grown though. Maybe no the genre but his chops have. Walking Tall is one of my personal favorites. But that's because I'm a vet so I know how it feels to come home and everything is feels foreign.

I'll believe it when I see it. He's going to be filming JUNGLE CRUISE this summer and then moving on to film HOBBS & SHAW at the end of the year. RED NOTICE has a scheduled 2020 release date which means he will be filming that in 2019. He is also scheduled to film the next Jumanji movie as Sony wants a Dec 2019 release date.

Hmm.🤔 If he was scheduled to secretly cameo in Shazam, he likely would've thought to mention the movie alongside Aquaman. However, maybe The Rock purposely didn't mention it, to throw off any suspicion. Either way, Black Adam should TOTALLY be introduced in the Shazam movie. Or at the very least, referenced through exposition.

An oblique reference through exposition in Shazam would be fine. Then, if the SS2 plot is as rumored, with Black Adam revealed at the end to be the Macguffin that the bad-bad guys are pursuing (with the Squad trying to stop them), introduce him there with a badass cameo at the end of the film. That leads into his own prequel movie telling his story, and finally Shazam 2. Nice little arc.
And, believe it or nor, Khandaq actually got mentioned on The Flash last night!

Ugh. ZACK SNYDER. What a piece of trash. Snyder is that guy you know who just doesn’t get it, but couldn’t be more enthusiastic. He’s just smart enough to figure out what smart people are into, but not smart enough to have a legitimate interest himself. Zack Snider is the guy who shows up to every party on time, but no one is happy about it. Zack Snyder produces mindless, bottom of the barrel, opiate of the masses level popcorn entertainment for people who would rather die than suffer subtitles, and what makes him especially bad is that he seems to prefer doing this to intellectual properties that could actually be really great in the right hands. Having Black Adam be the weapon of mass destruction the squad are looking for in SS2 would be a cool way to introduce him i think. Have his film set after SS2 after they "obviously" accidentally wake him from a magic slumber the first Shazam put him in centuries before.

I can't wait to see him as Black Adam, physically, he fits the part. My only issue is The Rock is a one-dimensional actor. It will be Black Adam as the The Rock, like it is with all his other movies. With that said, The Rock does The Rock really well.

I think he has improved his acting in the last years. But most of his characters are one-dimensional when their written. His charisma get's him a long way. But I think he could deliver a "powerful" performance in a more serious movie.

I'm sorry but that Starfire is downright disappointing. It doesn't even look like starfire. Looks like a chick with a pink wig on. And that Beast Boy with green hair and no green skin. Ugh. I shouldn't have expected less when I heard that this show was was overseen by that soap opera writer Greg Berlanti. This looks like something straight outta Smallville. Like the budget Justice League (without Batman) they had on that show. I don't really see the point of the show if they're not gonna use proper costumes/make-up to make the characters look like the characters we know. I'm sorry but I'm just disappointed. :/

      I understand your sentiment. However I don't really think Disney owning DC would work as a monopoly per se.
      Some of the downsides of monopolic companies can be the increase of prices or the decrease in quality products. However when it comes to movies, production companies usually do not dictate the prices. Also, movies are very dependant on word of mouth. If a studio makes a bad movie, they will lose millions and millions of dollars, so they are nearly always obligated to make movies that will be appealing to the audience. Disney is the leading company in many areas, but they're still mostly high quality.
      Not to mention people can always choose to watch other movies instead of superhero movies. Sure there's a market segment that will always go for superhero movies, but the masses in general just want to watch entertaining movies and have a good time.

    The casting overall in DC has been pretty great, with a couple exceptions. The cohesion was perfect so far. I don't know how you think otherwise. The movies literally led from one to the next in order of the events. "Better movies" is never a guarantee. However, it is extremely important that they focus on longterm goals. And I would like to see B-list characters in the front and center.

      I'd say the DCEU already has some continuity issues. Starting with WW saying she walked away from mankind 100 years ago, and then it happens that she did not. Can't recall Marvel having such a big contradiction so early on.
      I see DCEU movies being very different, to a point that they are not in harmony. Using a musical analogy, it's like DC has the notes, but not the right notes, so when they form a chord it sounds dissonant, as opposed to Marvel, which sounds a lot more harmonious. Perhaps the lack of quality in their movies feeds that feeling.
      I agree good movies are not a guarantee, but it sure is a higer probability with Disney than it is with WB.

      Adding to your musical analogy, I see it this way:
      Marvel is using a basic three chord progression, say GCF, in 4/4 time. Sometimes it varies and they throw in an A. Don't get me wrong, there's nothing wrong with three/four-chord progressions. There are tons of really good three/four chord songs. They're a lot of fun to listen to. But, the more of those songs you hear, the more they sound alike.
      DC on the other hand, is more experimental with their music. They're trying out 6/8 time and funky power chords. Some of these power chords don't sound right if they aren't accompanied by complimentary chords and notes. One song in particular is just wailing aimlessly on a guitar and smashing it into the ground (Suicide Squad lol). My point is, they are trying not to get caught in the standard three/four-chord song. In doing so, they are reaching a lot of wrong territory, but they are also finding different ways of making good music.
      I'm not trying to belittle any one type or praise another. There's plenty of good stuff from all areas and genres.
      Assuming my analogy made sense and I'm not just rambling like an idiot, I agree that Disney offers much more security. People know what to expect with Disney.

      I don't feel Marvel movies are all the same. Sure, they often use the same chord progressions but I feel like each one of their "songs" stands on their own. It's like a blues I-IV-V progression. You hear it all the time, yet blues songs don't all sound the same.
      DC/WB is like a band of beginners trying to play jazz. The band leader was a dude who played punk rock. They can't even play the chords right. It's mostly noise and people are booing and leaving the club. Honestly I'd rather hear a nice blues song than a poor attempt of a jazz song.
      I will disagree that people know what to expect with Marvel. They know what to expect in terms of quality and fun factor, but not story-wise. Civil War had a lot more unexpected moments than BvS. In fact BvS was a pretty cliche'd movie. Same for MoS. They were different in tone, but as movies they were still pretty generic.
      I see Marvel as a company that's not afraid to try new things. Just take a look, they made a movie about Ant-Man and a talking raccoon. Not to mention they made the first superhero team-up mega blockbuster. They sure take risks. DC/WB on the other hand has been trying to follow. Everything they're doing, Marvel has done it and better.

  Tsujihara at WB has already made it clear that he does not want to follow Disney/Marvel's formula after Snyder's attempt and failures. To me that reads, he doesn't want a unified Universe. It is sell-off of any old script to whomever is deemed worthy to produce it. Doesn't sound like an "invested" plan, more like, lets just see if we can squeeze some money out of this brand.
  Even though Disney/Marvel has their faults, almost all their many Marvel films have done really well, and they are starting to take chances on some interesting directors (Ragnork, etc.) DC can't say the same. I don't see a Disney takeover as such a bad thing.

    There are pros and cons to every production company. Fox did really well with their X-Men movies, but they can't make a good Fantastic Four movie. Universal made the best-looking MCU Hulk, but it was in an extremely lackluster movie. Sony made two great Spider-Man movies, one good movie, one so-so movie and two bad movies, so they're a pretty good indicator of the best and worst of CBM production companies.

      Agree, but Universal also tried (still trying I think) to kick off their own dark universe, and we saw how that went with the Mummy. I would rather a movie company with at least some track record of success take DC.
      Fox has had success with X-Men, but they are terrible at the TV Universe end of it. They are known for cancelling their TV shows mid season without endings. LOL. I can see them do a gut job on all the CW DCTV shows..which some would argue would be a good thing.

      The company I'd like to see take DC the most would probably be Paramount.
      The CW shows are what they are. If you can get past that they have pretty bad writing, dumb stories, and comic inaccuracy, they can be enjoyable.

      It will be interesting to see what happens to DC. There is not a lot of upside in all the directions it can go. I just see Disney's success as the safest bet.

      It would be a tremendous risk for Paramount, but they could potentially pull it off. My idea is that Spielberg and George Lucas get together for Green Lantern Corps. A sci-fi epic adventure. Kinda like a cross between Indiana Jones and Star Wars. I could see that being a huge deal. Plus, it would bring Green Lantern into the forefront of the DCU. I agree though, Disney would be DC's safest bet.

      I like where you are going with GL. There is so much of its universe to explore, all the worlds, the different rings...it really plays out like a Star Wars, Star Trek type feel. I agree, it needs big directors like Spielberg (not a fan of Lucas myself) to explore all the lore and universe.
      So far, from WB, I am hearing some sort of buddy-cop chuckle-fest. I will reserve my judgement when we hear more, but I can see it coming...Lethal Weapon in space, ugh.

      Honestly, they could explain the rings in a similar way to the force. The ring chooses its wielder based on their willpower. Not just anyone can use it. It is gift that a select few can hold.
      I said Spielberg and Lucas because they both worked on Indiana Jones, which is my favorite adventure movie of all time. George Lucas was a screen writer for it and Spielberg was the director.
      Even if they go the buddy-cop route, it could still be really good, though my idea for a buddy-cop superhero movie would be Booster Gold and Blue Beetle. Anyway, if it's just Hal and John on their beat and coming across some call to adventure, then I still see potential for a great movie with some good, authentic comedic value.
      I love Green Lantern so much, if you couldn't tell...

      And it's not like Marvel doesn't have dark characters. They have the Netflix shows. If they used that kind of production, we could still have a "Dark Knight."

      Exactly, and I seriously doubt Marvel would apply their "Marvel" formula into the DC branch. I mean, come on, Marvel and DC have basically copied each other's characters, so they would be forced to treat each house differently, hopefully darker in DC's case.

      In all seriousness, I totally agree. They wouldn't force the DC characters into a world where everything is all happy and fun (I'm not saying they do that with Marvel, they just have a tendency to lighten things up a bit too much).

FINALLY! Dwayne Johnson has somewhat of an official word for Black Adam.

Looking forward to this. We need his star power at Team DC and a great Black Adam film that treats the character properly and keeps him true to canon that will help to boost the DC Universe out of obscurity.

And for those complaining about DJ's acting chops, dude has enough of what it takes to get the job done. We don't need an Academy Award winning performance from anyone in the superhero genre and he has grown leaps and bounds from his early work. He's a solid choice and a dead ringer for Black Adam. He will be just fine.

This is good news for a fantastic, legendary comic-book franchise that needs to resurrect.

it does not sound logical to have superheroes movies from one comic universe without having them connected!
The only thing Comics fans didn't get yet. Comic based movies are not a copy paste from comics....simply on big screen they need to have different plot. DCU is under reconstructions.
and... BvS is a good movie + JL is also a good movie. 😋
