on Zack Snyder says Bruce Wayne lived in his 'Batman v Superman' lake house since age 18

In Batman v Superman, Bruce Wayne lives in a lake house instead of Wayne Manor. The mansion has been abandoned for years, and now thanks to director Zack Snyder we know just how long it's been since Wayne moved out.

"I think his father commissioned the lake house as a gift to his mother," Snyder told a fan on Vero. "A place built by her favorite architect and she loved it. When Bruce turned 18, he moved in. He ordered Wayne Manor be left to decompose."

At the end of Justice League, Wayne suggests using a room in the abandoned Wayne Manor as the "Hall of Justice" for his team. Perhaps we'll see it be rebuilt one day in a future movie.

"What does that have to do with anything?"

Lets start with the fact he just completely made that up, saying he "thinks" his father comissionned as a gift to his mother, a place built by her favorite architect..like what the hell? Why is he making up a backstory for his batman that he's not even sure of, its ridiculous and completely unnecessary.

I think you're just over-exaggerating. You really have no proof that he's making things up, other than him simply saying "I think". Like, really dude?

Saying I think before talking is a sign of uncertainty. How can you "think" when its your movie? Its either that, or its not. Its not the first time he does this and he clearly just made that up. This has to be the dumbest/useless piece of information that ever came out his mouth.

Grief does this kind of thing to people. Bruce saw his parents die, and now the manor reminds him of the family he once had. While I would rather like it if he stayed in the manor, this makes sense for him to abandon the manor.

No it doesn’t. Bruce Wayne was always sentimental to preserving his parents memory. He wouldn’t let their home decay on purpose because he’s sad.

Batman is his coping mechanism, not sex, not popping pills, not mixing wine and pills, not destroying his parents memory. His coping mechanism is Batman, Batman is what let’s him keep the illusion that he is okay. Snyder doesn’t get it.

            Schuyler Finleyreplying to Bats2012

Yeah it does. He's 18 years old and is constantly having nightmares about their deaths. It's very easy to imagine a teenager wanting to "get away" from the bad memories.

And like you mentioned, he dresses up like a Bat at night to fight crimes. ....and yet you think him getting drunk, having lots of sex, and downing painkillers is too much? Hell, the painkillers makes total sense, since the guy gets hurt a LOT and doesn't go to the hospital.

Batman should be a hero, not a manifestation of the worst parts of our society. Are you unaware of our problems with binge drinking, prescription drug abuse, and failed relationships? How can he focus on what he’s doing as a crime fighter if he’s out chasin’ poon and popping pills?

Maybe you just enjoy that childish take on the character because you feel your life is too boring and you’re living vicariously through the character. Some of us would rather aspire to be a good person that can change their world rather than “chasin’ poon and poppin’ pills”.

The dude is at his lowest point when we see him in the film. Excuse him for being a goddamn human. This is the same issue with Superman. People want the heroes to ONLY be the good representation of humanity. God forbid these heroes act like actual people.

Same as Bruce chasing after skirts in the comics. Dude slept around a lot.

“He did it in the comics” doesn’t justify it, that’s one of the poorer parts of his characterization in many of the comics and it’s often there because they’re written by repressed nerds.

The heroes should be people we would aspire to be, not examples of how not to act. That is why they are heroes.

Bruce actually doesn't sleep around that much, if at all, in the comics. It's all just a facade and doesn't really sleep with women all the much in the end.

            Of course. That excuse......

Newsflash, the heroes do the same shit that we normal do. The heroes make mistakes. The heroes stray from the righteous path sometimes, but in the end they get back on their feet and save the day. And that's exactly what Batfleck did. He strayed from the path, but is able to get back on track and fight the good fight.

            This is basic writing 101.

Crossing the line that can't be crossed, to later come back is thematically worthless. That's why it's uncrossable line to begin with.
It won't matter if he doesn't kill anymore. He's killed people now. Loads of them. He's irredeemable.

          24. Schuyler Finley Avatar
            Schuyler Finleyreplying to Seb

No he isn't. Do you know how many heroes have killed, showed remorse about it later on, and then redeemed themselves? Shit like this happens in real life. He's only irredeemable if he feels no remorse about it, which was supposedly cut out in JL.

And it's not thematically worthless. We've seen Batman when he's crossed that line. Now we will see if he ever gets pushed again. Maybe he's gets in a no-win situation where the only choice is to kill. This much better than just knowing "Batman will never kill".

          25. Seb Avatar
            Sebreplying to Schuyler Finley

"uncrossable" line. A line that can't be crossed, because if he does, he'll never come back. That's the entire point why he doesn't make any exceptions to his rule. I'm sorry, but this theme of redemption destroyed the character and what he's about. It's just not worth it.

            Schuyler Finleyreplying to Seb

Some aspects of the character should be respected and stay the same. Unless they developed it enough - over several years - to the point that such a deviation becomes acceptable. For a first outing, this was a whiplash, plain and simple.

            Schuyler Finleyreplying to Seb

Now I can agree with that. Yeah they could've waited did at least one prequel where we see Batman fall, but I'm okay with it since film writers tend to change things when adapting stories. And since killing will always be part of his lore, I didn't have an issue with Batman killing the mercs. It's not like he was All-Star Batman who took great pleasure in killing crooks and cops.

The core of Batman's story is all about picking yourself up from a big fall and doing something productive and positive with the resulting emotions. That's the source of inspiration here, even if it takes a different form than we're used to.

Do I think this is the best way to demonstrate it in congruence with Batman's history? No. It's not my preference. Still, Batman has always been fallible and he's always been about rising from a place of darkness. He does precisely that in BvS.

The movie is not trying to glamorize those things and show us a crappy example of who to aspire to be. Quite the opposite, it is showing us he has fallen, and these bad things he's doing are symptoms of a deep problem - it's showing us that he needs to pick himself up again and come out of the dark. What he's doing is shrouded in negativity, cynicism, and depression. Alfred is constantly concerned about his path.

The movie wraps with him becoming inspired to be a better hero again, and JL is an undercut attempt to show him seeking redemption for his fall. That is what makes it a portrayal of a hero, lifting that weight and discovering the determination to climb out of what's pushing you down. Just like Begins and, eventually, Rises.

If JL got to be the movie it was intended to be, I reckon this message would have been more clear to viewers in hindsight. BvS gives us enough to work with though.

Your point makes sense. But consider, when writing a film and creating or adapting characters there isn't necessarily a canonized backstory. The screenwriter has his own ideas I'm sure. As does the director, as does (obviously) the actor. People in every department are making judgement calls on developing a character with tiny details that most people will never notice. They have to be on the same page on big character choices, but they can't get together and collectively write a biography for them. I think that by saying "I think" Snyder is essentially saying "this isn't Canon, but the way I saw it...."

I DO have to admit I did NOT know the writer who signed it graduated from Harward. I heard that was a good school, you'd think a graduate from that school could write something better than a piece of crap that couldn't get over meager 40% on RT.

This lake house bit is nothing more than a personal headcanon. And regardless, Snyder didn’t write the film; you made it seem very much a sole effort on his part.

The movie was cut up. And the critics missed the point. And then many of the general audience blindly followed their word, as is so often the case, unfortunately. Try to get the movie. Once you do, you’ll see that it’s not crap at all.

There’s no need. We have all the information we need to see how it happened (obsessively collected security footage and files on every known metahuman on the planet, super intellect, billions of dollars, wealth of high tech resources, manipulative pull on everyone including politicians, etc.).
Expectations can always make things that go differently than in our heads disappointing, but that doesn’t invalidate the way they do end up going if we remain objective.

Everything you said just shows lex finding the identity of the others, but not supes or bats. The video footage was just a cheap way to lead to JL, nothing else. Being a billionaire and intelligent doesnt grant you magical powers that reveals the greatest heroes identities. Its bad story telling all around, my expectations have nothing to do with bad writing.

If he's saying "but duh, Lex has the internet! He has resources", what that actually means is that Bruce Wayne, one of the most intelligent and paranoid people on planet Earth, his biggest and most precious secret is a very poorly kept one. What he's saying is that Batman is stupid.
Sorry, but that's just bad writing. Batman's secret identity is one of the best kept secrets in the DC universe. Because if it wasn't, the character simply would not work.

It's shown in the prequel comic that Lex had hacked the Batcomputer. Which was why he was able to figure out Batman's identity. I honestly that they had mentioned this in BvS.

But the movie shouldn't have to rely on some prequel comic to justify its plot holes.
Also, simply hacking the Batcomputer seems below Bruce's abilities. Besides, how would Lex know to hack the Batcomputer? Wouldn't that require for him to know Bruce is Batman?

          9. Schuyler Finley Avatar
            Schuyler Finleyreplying to Seb

That's why I said I wished they had included it in the film, instead of just showing how he got the other team's identities. And it's shown in BvS that Lex is very smart individual. Him hacking the Batcomputer without Bruce noticing is a hell of achievement and shows how smart he really is. And he wouldn't have to know that Bruce is Batman in order to hack the computer. He could bug Batman's radio signals, use his satellites to spy on Batman, etc.

            Sebreplying to Schuyler Finley

While Lex is smarter than Bruce... the difference isn't that huge to the point that Lex could easily just hack Bruce without Bruce noticing. Bruce is better than just letting Lex (albeit unknowingly) hack his computer or track him via satellites. Seems like the most obvious way of doing it, surely Bruce would have a contingency for that.

How do you know? Lex seems to be a walking encyclopedia. The dude's brain runs a hundred miles per hour. Even in the comics, Lex has been known to be way smarter than Batman. He even discovered Batman's identity one time.

Lex is smarter, true. But Bruce has also outsmarted Lex on several occasions. I don't mind Lex figuring out his identity... what bothers me is that ol' "he hacked him" excuse. Bruce is simply better than that.

It makes it clear HOW he would know Supes and Bats’ identities. Of course it doesn’t explicitly show him doing that. Like I said, the answer is implicit. Probably for shock value.
No, the video footage was a pretty integral part of the plot. Not sure why people complain about it. It told us much more about Lex Luthor’s character, it was one of the main bases for the “Dawn of Justice” sideplot, and it of course hits it home even more how Luthor would have been able to identify who Supes and Bats were.
You’re joking. Right? Do you honestly believe being one of the richest people on the planet does not give you any power or influence or access to do more and get more information than any old average Joe? Do you not understand how being one of the smartest people on the planet would not make it potentially quite easy to figure out the secret identities of two men that honestly wouldn’t be all that difficult to figure out anyway? The shock value was in the trailer, and when people went to see the movie they wanted to know how he knew. That shock value was just a wasted opportunity.

"You’re joking. Right? Do you honestly believe being one of the richest people on the planet does not give you any power or influence or access to do more and get more information than any old average Joe?

Bruce may not be as rich as lex, but he's still a billionaire with the same access as lex. So no, bruce wayne is not just any old average joe, same goes for the government.

Lex finding out is not the issue, i thought i made this clear already.
The problem is that they didnt show us how he did it, and this stupid assumption that he has access to video surveillance or whatever, is the laziest made up scenario that i ever heard, not to mention that batman wouldn't let that happen so easily.

Who said Bruce and the government were average Joes? Where’d you get that idea from? I was just showing how money = power, since you denied that fact. I wasn’t calling any specific person an average Joe.

I think you forgot your own comment I was responding to, based on these replies. You explicitly said how money and smarts don’t give a person magical identity-discovering powers. I was just explaining how they essentially do.

It’s not a problem as long as they make it clear how he would’ve done it. And they did. So stop making problems out of nothing in order to justify your predetermined opinions.

Assumption? Lazy? Did you not see the movie? He most definitely has video surveillance. It’s a fact. You see some of it in his files.

Honestly all you need is a little deduction to figure out Batman is Bruce Wayne. If NO ONE is having suspicions that the richest guy in Gotham who had his parents murdered by a criminal as a kid and shows up back in the city around the same time as Batman is the one fighting crime at nights with tons of high-tech gadgets and vehicles and things, then you’ve got a pretty unbelievable story on your hands. And it doesnt, there's alot of characters in dc that are smart with loads of money, does that mean they should all of a sudden know the identity of every superheroes? No. Spiderman homecoming was an excellent way for a villain to find out the identity of a hero, and thats one of the reason why its a better movie.

"Who said Bruce and the government were average Joes? Where’d you get that idea from?"

I got this from you. Using your logic the government or anybody with money and intellect can know any heroes identity.

"It’s not a problem as long as they make it clear how he would’ve done it. And they did."

No they didnt, and if he did find out like this, then why are his files not with the rest of the heroes? since he also found their identities with video surveillance.

No, money and smarts don't automatically equal knowing people's identities, but, as I have been arguing from the beginning, they go to great lengths in helping discover such information if you want it.
Haven't seen it yet, unfortunately. Last Marvel movie I saw was Doctor Strange. I'm pitifully behind on the times :(

No, but anyone with ENOUGH of that is more likely to. When you get to the point of being the SMARTEST person, and being one of - if not THE - RICHEST, then if you want to find out an identity, I would be more surprised if you couldn't than if you could, realistically (though that still wouldn't eliminate the shock in the moment of learning you know). Take those attributes, and add them to Lex's paranoid and possibly deranged obsession with metahumans and such, his resources, and his manipulative hold over so many people, and one could probably argue that his discovering their identities is inevitable.

            They did. See above.
There is absolutely no question with how obsessed with Superman Lex seems to be that he has collected a wealth of information on him (and certainly on Batman, as well, I'd imagine), so that is a good question. We know he must have files on them. I myself have wondered why they weren't shown plenty of times, as well. I just figure it's to preserve that shock value, like I said, or perhaps it's an oversight or a fear of being redundant. Their information could very well be in one of the other folders, perhaps because these two were the only ones Lex was actively interacting with at the time - Superman would definitely fit well in the "Xenobiology" folder.

            Hyperbole is fun.
Superman has already been shown crashing satellites. We got our resolution to that "what if" at the end of MoS, remember? And I doubt the government would be that interested in figuring out who that vigilante dressed as a bat in Gotham City is, lol

One of the richest and smartest people in the world with unlimited resources can probably figure out who people are. His investigation would first lead him to Lois Lane(since she writes about him so much). Lois would lead him to Smallville. Smalleville would lead him to Martha Kent. Martha would lead him to Clark. Im pretty sure that lex have the brain to figure it out, but show the Audience the hard work and dedication it took for him to unmask these heroes, dumbing down batman just to show how intelligent lex is, is just disrespectful to any batman fan and comic book readers.

Everyone knows how smart Batman is. Batman is Batman. And in BvS, he's shown creating vehicles and technology and gadgets, converting an alien mineral into smoke grenades, setting up elaborate plans and traps, speaking foreign languages, hacking into highly secure computer stuff, etc. He's clearly pretty smart.
Once again, they didn't dumb him down. They "smarted" Lex up, if anything, lol.

nobody said it was easy necessarily. It was all done before the movie takes place. You have to operate under the assumption that as soon as the movie starts, Lex's plan has already been set into motion. Im sure he spent the period between Man of Steel and BvS figuring out who they were. There was a prequel comic that implied this actually. Ya ya I know its a different media, but im just saying that for me personally, its not something that bugged me tremendously since I found it perfectly reasonable to assume that he was capable of doing this. I also don't agree that it dumbs down batman but whatever

Why do we have to assume something that is important to the plot? Why not show us? Without him knowing, there would be no plan.

Once again, i dont mind lex finding out their identities, my only issue is that were left with assumptions when they could've easily include a 5 minute scene showing us.

Pretty much everyone assumed it was something to do with his past(possibly the joker's doing or something). What is the point of this? Does Zack not like Wayne Manor? Like whats the point of specifically NOT having Wayne Manor(an important part of the batman mythology) if there is not a definitive reasoning for it? Wayne Manor is iconic. But they don't even have a legitimate reason for it not being utilized? I was fine with not knowing honestly. But no the people behind the movie don't even know themselves? Wtf? You know I am a Snyder defender but this...this was kind of dumb

Yeah, I don’t like the idea much myself, either. It’s not a big deal, though; I’m just glad it didn’t make it into the official canon. As for Wayne Manor being destroyed in general, though, I always thought some big event happened there, too, and its destruction was one of many things that helped contribute to his depression. But more importantly, and I think this remains true for sure, the state of the Manor and its disuse shows the condition of his soul.

I think we can all agree, even as a big fan of Snyder's style, that some of his.. at least some of his ideas aren't that good and BVS might've turned out to be a better and or an even better movie perhaps in your opinion if maybe another person had more of a directive hand in the story concepts from the beginning. Terrio wrote the script of course but he was working off of Snyder's story ideas.

Bale’s Batman was never excessive either. He never attacked anyone he didn’t have to and he never used force that he didn’t need to. The closest he got to snapping was when he beat up the joker in the interrogation room.

Batfleck dragged a broken and already imobilized car with four people in it behind his Batmobile and threw it into a mobile office that may have been occupied. That was just one example of many.

This did happen to Bruce a few times in the comics. The most famous being when Jason Todd died, he fell into a spell of recklessness and brutality that actually was wearing him apart both physically and mentally.

Tim Drake saw this and decided Batman needed a Robin, and we see him spring back into the shape we know and love. A Lonely Place of Dying was an important column of Batman's mythos as it stands today. I was really hoping the upcoming solo Batman movie would deal with Robin because of this...

There's also Batman: Venom, where Batman is so torn up over failing to save a girl that he turns to venom to boost his performance.

Batman slips sometimes, but learns to pick himself back up. BvS employs these canon concepts for a new spin, and I think that's fair. The Robin costume says it all.

That said, Zack's own personal fanfiction lately that aims to fill in the blanks the movie leaves open takes it to an extreme I'm not in favor of. ;p

When he says "I think", that says to me that Goyer/Terrio/whoever probably didn't write anything about it, and it hasn't gone through the production mill for filtering. He's just projecting his imagination, which is also fair, and something I take lightly.

True, it happened when Damian died too. I know a lot of people didn't like that whole story arc, but I did. And it showed Bruce at a low point. Anyways, the point is that he STILL obeyed his moral code and didn't kill anyone.
Well, in the case of Damian, Frankenstein kinda "died" but Bruce didn't really kill him. And Frankenstein also can't really "die" anyways.
Listen, I've no problem at all with a Batman losing his touch. In fact, I kinda like it when that happens for narrative purposes. But to use that as an excuse to justify him killing is... well... inexcusable. It destroys the character. It's comic book heresy as far as I'm concerned.
He should and would NEVER kill. Batfleck did. That's the difference. I'm sorry, I can't ignore that.

Christopher Nolan’s Batman blew up dojos, flipped police cars with explosive devices, “didn’t save” Ra’s al Ghul, pushed Two-Face off a building to his death, and fatally crashed Talia in her truck. But he is not counted guilty for any of those deaths. Some are explained away, and the rest are indirect or unintentional.

Now take that mindset, and progress it to the point that the Batman in BvS is - broken, hardened, jaded, more violent - and you get something like what happened in BvS: a more reckless and brutal Batman who lets these sort of deaths happen around him more often, but doesn’t really care too much.

Zack Snyder confirmed that his intent was that Batman only kill indirectly/unintentionally like Nolan’s Batman did, so it must be interpreted through that lens. It only seems more frequent/overt because this Batman is in a bad state. If one light punch would do, he’s going to punch twice and hard.

He never shoots people, he shoots a car. If it happens that they end up getting hurt or possibly killed in that process, that’s not his problem - that’s the way he’s thinking, more or less.

I've addressed ALL of that in this comment section. You're simply wrong.

            1: Ninjas
Bale didn't "blow up" ninjas. He attempted to escape, but unfortunately his actions were reckless and lead to collateral damage. That doesn't prove he directly killed anyone.
Although to be fair, out of all of these examples, this is the one that bugs me the most. It was reckless behavior and Batman would never do that.
But it's clear that Bruce never meant to kill anyone in that scene... Heck, the sole reason why he attempted to escape is because he DIDN'T want to take a life. If you ask me, this is more of a plot hole on Nolan's part (as the criminal he was supposed to kill probably died anyways), for dramatic or suspense purposes.

            2: police cars
In the freaking movie: "It's a miracles NO ONE GOT KILLED"
            Liar.
            Argument refuted and ignored.

            3: Ra's
Not saving people isn't the same as killing them. Ra's failed plan and arrogance led to his death. This is just categorically NOT the same thing, and you fucking know it.

            4: Two-Face
Yes, the only man he actually killed. But Even then, it's beyond clear that Bruce didn't want to, and perhaps, didn't even mean to. He was shot and bleeding to death, whilst Two-Face was about to kill Gordon and perhaps his family after that (Two-Face usually flips the coin multiple times in order to get the results he wants), and Bruce had only a split second to act. Why would he deliberately push Two-Face off of the building, knowing that Two-Face held on to Gordon's son? He knew that would kill them both in the process. So from my perspective, Bruce didn't push him, he tackled him and they all fell off the building, but luckily he was able to save Jim's son.
My point isn't that Bruce didn't kill him... but that his mindset wasn't that of a murderer or a killer. He never meant to take anyone's life. It was NOT his intent. And he was genuinely affected by it in the end (even going so far as to disappear for 8 freaking years).
This "killing" on Bale's part, is thus understandable and forgivable... because he did the best he could, and was in a no-win situation. This is COMPLETELY different from Batfleck shooting defenseless goons to fucking shreds and showcasing ZERO remorse while doing so.

            5: Talia
As stated in the film: he was shooting SUPPRESSIVE FIRE. Not meant to be lethal. And as was stated in the film, he was pushing her towards Lucius' location, to stabilize the bomb. He never meant to, and didn't, kill anyone in that entire chase scene.
Talia was the one too stubborn and she drove that truck down the bridge. This wasn't Bruce's plan, because again, he planned for her to drive to Lucius through suppressive fire.
Besides... This is yet another case of Bruce not wanting to kill anyone, but suppose that he did... suppose that the missiles caused her death... it's still her life against MILLIONS. He would never want to, but he'd have no choice. But that said, it didn't happen that way. Cause his missiles didn't kill her anyways.

So that leaves, Dent. And that's it. Saying he killed the others is a LIE. It's factually not true.

"Zack Snyder confirmed that his intent was that Batman only kill indirectly/unintentionally like Nolan’s Batman did, so it must be interpreted through that lens."
No... It really mustn't. I don't care what Zack freaking Snyder says. The guy is known for stating absolute nonsense all the fucking time (like him saying he killed people "all the time" in TDKR, when in fact, he killed ZERO people). If his Batman directly crushes defenseless goons. If he directly shoots them to fucking shreds and drives through their obliterated corpses for good measure, I don't care if Snyder THINKS this is "unintentional", or "indirectly", because the FACTS prove otherwise. Those were DIRECT, INTENTIONAL kills. He pulled the trigger knowing they would die. That proves intent. He shot them DIRECTLY.
Bale would simply NEVER do ANY of these things, and you fucking know it. Batfleck also never showcased a sense of remorse. In fact, he seemed to go out of his way killing as many people, and causing as much collateral damage as possible. He was reckless. He was NEVER in a situation where he "had to" kill anyone, or where he had no choice, like Bale was. Batfleck could have spared ALL of their lives (with KGBeast maybe being the one exception) but he didn't. He killed them all regardless.
So yes, there is a HUGE, undeniable, categorical, factual difference between Batfleck and Bale, their mindset, intent and how they approached things.

"if one light punch would do, he’s going to punch twice and hard."
Not an excuse. If anything, it's an admission.

"He never shoots people, he shoots a car."
Oh please!!!! For fuck's sake. "People don't kill people, bullets do". Don't go there, mate. Just fucking don't.

"If it happens that they end up getting hurt or possibly killed in that process, that’s not his problem - that’s the way he’s thinking, more or less."
No, that's what Snyder says. Except Batman DOES directly shoot at people. Blowing up cars with people inside them is DIRECTLY killing people. Throwing unconscious and defenseless goons at live grenades, is DIRECTLY killing people.

Batfleck is a ruthless psycho murderer. Bale is someone who never meant to take anyone's life, but unfortunately did because he was put into a situation where he cannot win.

And Batfleck killing? We've already have tons of videos of Bale killing as well. At least Batfleck doesn't preach about not killing or using guns. Bale is a hypocrite throughout the trilogy.

We can argue - as we have in the past - for days how Batfleck's murderous behavior is far worse than Bale's and how both cannot be compared, but ultimately, if you cannot see the blatant and self-evident difference in their approach, I can't help you.
Bale is also not a hypocrite. Ben is (Ohh, people died as a result of Superman's battle with Zod. Let me just kill him for that and in the process, kill a ton of people myself and cause all manners of collateral damage). In fact, the entire point of BvS is that Batman WAS wrong and a hypocrite. And HE was the one being destructive and a douche.

True we have no idea how Ben was before. It doesn't matter though, because Batman would NEVER cross that line and become such a psychopath. And from what Snyder's said... I'm inclined to believe his Batman killed from the very start.

          17. Schuyler Finley Avatar
            Schuyler Finleyreplying to Seb

They can be compared. Batlfeck is at his lowest point. He sees himself as a criminal. He acknowledges that he's crossing the line. Bale on the other hand comes off as being "holier than thou". He preaches about not killing, even though he kills in each film. He preaches about not using any guns, but the Batmobile uses heavy artillery.

And even if he did kill at the start of his career, so what? Each live-action batman, except for Clooney's, has killed at least one time in eahc of their films. Being upset that Batfleck kills is pointless, unless Snyder or a higher-up said that Batlfeck is supposed to be the "no-kill" iteration.

          18. Seb Avatar
            Sebreplying to Schuyler Finley

No... Bale's entire philosophy hinges entirely on him NOT being a judge, jury, executioner. He's simply there to bring down the criminals and hand them over to Gordon. He's not there to decide what ought to happen with them.

With Ben, even if he doesn't outright kill them, he marks them for death. This proves he's selfrighteous and believes his judgement to be superior. That's the epitome of "holier than thou".

"He preaches about not killing, even though he kills in each film."
He only killed Dent, and even then, it was hardly intentional. If anything, it was more of an accident and it's clear he never wanted for that to happen. Whereas with Ben, it seems like he doesn't care (at best) or maybe even enjoys it at some level, or at least, "needs" to, as an expression of his irrational rage.
He doesn't kill Ra's. He also doesn't kill Talia, she drove that truck down the bridge. He was - as stated in the film - shooting "suppressive fire". It wasn't lethal fire.

"He preaches about not using any guns, but the Batmobile uses heavy artillery."
But never lethal force. Batman ALWAYS uses artillery. The difference is Batfleck uses it to kill people. Bale uses it to make a path (with the Batpod) or for supressive fire, as I've said. Again, HUGE difference in their approach.

You know what bothers me the most about Bale?
Not Ra's. That was his own fault. Not Talia. That was her own fault. Not Dent, as he didn't really mean to. Not the cops in BB, because as stated in the film "it's a miracle no one died". It's the ninjas of the League of Shadows when Bruce refuses to kill and attempts to escape. Not because he outrightly kills anyone, because he doesn't. But because his actions were reckless and led to the deaths of dozens, I assume. But still, that's nowhere near as bad as Ben deliberately massacring dozens of people, simply because he can't help himself.

So in the end, Bale only "kills" one man. And that's Dent. So yes, there is a big difference. Also in intent and approach. AT NO POINT does Bale EVER want to kill anyone. With Dent he had no choice, and was bleeding to death.
With Batfleck, he kills cause he WANTS TO. He doesn't give a fuck who dies, or how many. There's a huge difference, yes.

Any Batman fan who respects the Batman lore, would be pissed with such a Batman interpretation. It does completely against what he's all about. With Bale, that was NOT the case.

Not really "holier than thou" when he straight up tells Alfred "We're criminals, Alfred. We've always been criminals". He knows what he's doing is wrong. If he was that self-righteous, he wouldn't label himself as a criminal. He even acknowledges that Superman isn't their enemy yet. If he was that self-righteous, he wouldn't do that. He knows that risk of letting Superman walk away is too great, so he's willing nip the problem at the bed before it blooms.

Bale killed way more than just Dent, Seb. And Batfleck never showed any expression of pleasure when he killed the mercenaries.

I don't think I need to tell you that law doesn't necessarily mean morality. Jim Crow was the law at some point. Doesn't mean it was good or moral.

This is Schuyler Finley you're debating with a guy whose openly admitted to me he doesn't read comics and prefers "fan fiction" versions of it so yeah he doesn't give a damn about Batman outside of films and "fan fiction". I got no problem with people not reading the comics but i have got problems who try to act like they know the characters well when they clearly don't, my sister doesn't read comics much but even she hated how BvS portrayed Batman and turns to me if she's unsure if a film or TV done right with these characters.

I never said that I prefer specific iterations. I said I just read fanfiction. And you know what happens when I'm reading and come an come across something that I don't know about? I google it, so that I can have a basic understanding of what I'm reading about. And I watch Linkara who does comic reviews. He's very informative and makes his viewers know the backstory of the comic he's about to review.

So excuse me for not reading the actual comics. It's 2018 dude. People today can just simply look shit up the internet without having to read the actual material. Piss off with that nonsense.

As for my sister well the point is she doesn't act like she knows what she's taking about when she doesn't, if she see's or reads something what doesn't look right she's turns to me make sure she isn't wrong. The problem is with a lot of the Snyder fanbase from what i've seen is that you act like you know what you're talking about when the reality is the only stuff you know comes from films or cartoons. Not reading them is fine, hell i don't really read Marvel nowadays but i don't act like like i know everything about Marvel and its characters.

If he did this when he was 18 in this universe, how old was he during the "brick for brick" line in Begins?

He didn't become Batman until he was like 30 in Begins, right?

          1. Seb Avatar
            Sebreplying to Rust

He said that when he was out of college/ high school. So anywhere between 18 and 22. My guess is 22 because Bruce is gone for 7 years, and when he comes back, he celebrates his birthday and in the background you can see a big 30 hanging from the wall. So that means he was 29 when he first put on the suit. 29 - 7 = 22. And we know that the "brick for brick" scene happened at the same time of the hearing (for Joe Chill), so there's no difference in time between that line of Bruce, and when he left for 7 years. In short, yeah, he was probably 22 there.
But I don't see what your point is.

I was just wondering for comparison purposes. No argumentative point, because, after all, what Zack is saying here is that he never came back around after what he brazenly decided at age 18, where Bale's Bruce did.

I prefer Bale's in this case.

          3. Seb Avatar

Honestly, I prefer Bale in every manner.
I'd say I prefer Ben's suit, but I simply can't ignore all of that excessive padding, which I think looks absolutely ridiculous and robs Ben of having a genuine and realistic physical presence. Ben's cowl however, being on piece without sacrificing articulation, is a work of art. Though even then, I prefer Bale's cowl (he just looked meaner and more focused. Ben looks weird if the lighting is off).
But JL suit was more streamlined and less over the top, which I liked, but the problem was that Affleck was out of shape (even during the OG Snyder scenes, not just the reshoots) and it looked weird when he was in the suit:
            https://uploads.disquscdn.c...
The area above the belt doesn't lign up with his crotch area. He looks out of proportion and it bothers me way more than it should.
Of course I also like the Warehouse scene, but even then I didn't feel like Batman was an actual hero. While the Batman vs SWAT teams in TDK wasn't as visually appealing, that was an actual hero doing a hero's work. Everything about Bale just feels so much better.

But that home was damaged. So from a good construction foundation point of view it is best to build it like it once was brick-by-brick for that strong foundation. Also because Nolan Batsy had a reason to live there, not abandon it.

And as Alfred said, "I thought this might be a good opportunity for improving the foundations"
        Bruce: "In the South-East corner?"
        Alfred: "Precisely sir."

So there was good reason for a destroy and rebuild. The thing with Batfleck Bruce is, he completely abandoned it to decompose.

I feel like there would be a better explanation, like a villain in his past found out who Batsy was (preferably that Hush guy, in my interpretation) and destroyed Mr. Wayne's Manor.

I somewhat can see it in that perspective, but it doesn't feel very, "Batman-y" to me.

I feel like his parents home, his family's home, the memories and etc are things that he should dwell with in a way to remind himself (punish himself) as to why he's doing what he's doing. An extraordinary fuel to always, no matter what, honour his parents to bring justice against the criminal cowardly lot.

            That's why I feel scenes like this are always so strong;

            http://www.followingthenerd...

            https://www.youtube.com/wat...

I feel what you said makes more sense if Batfleck left and abandoned that Wayne Manor the same time he started to kill people. Lost all hope for himself and burnt that bridge of honour to his parents.

          4. Schuyler Finley Avatar
            Schuyler Finleyreplying to Bob Burger

It's why I think him turning Wayne Manor into the Hall of Justice 1.0 is his way of honoring his parents, as well opening himself back to the memories that he discarded.

And he was already haunted by his parents' death in his dreams, so he really didn't need more incentive to keep the cowl on. And also, since the lake house is near the manor, Bruce probably drives by the manor every single time he goes to Gotham or any other place. So in a way, he's still punishing himself.

          5. Bob Burger Avatar
            Bob Burgerreplying to Schuyler Finley

While I agree with what you've written there, I still feel that at that young age (18) it seems very, "un-Batmany" to abondon it to decompose.

I feel like at that age, that's a really good prime age to be motivated-as-hell with all the intense training, studying etc to follow his path in order to honour his parents. (This is with the more B:TAS/Lego Batsy mindset in mind)

I feel like the time of which Batfleck started killing would be the most logical/appropriate reason as to why he abandoned the Manor. Loss of Hope, loss of humanity, a burnt bridge of honour to his parents.

Then to do what you said with what you wrote with your first statement.

Actually, I've expressed that I don't care for this idea of Snyder's. It's Elseworlds to me, so I accept it in that way, but it's not what I personally prefer or enjoy for Bruce Wayne as a character. In fact, it's the opposite.

All I'm saying here is that Ninja is not trolling by making reasoned counter-points, even if you disagree.

Painting people you disagree with as trolls and lumping them all together into a derogatory category is no better than trolling itself. I have never once called somebody a troll simply for disputing a choice Snyder made, so it seems unfair to be accused of trolling for defending a choice he made.

As for thinking I'm right and everyone else is wrong, isn't that the whole point of a debate? Why would I voice disagreement if I thought I was wrong? That would be silly.

It's not like I've pretended to have never have been wrong before in my life just because I think I'm right about a couple of points of view about a movie or two. :P The same goes for people who disagree with me. I don't accuse them of this any more than I accuse them of trolling, so long as they reason their points fairly and present themselves genuinely.

Both sides should be able to respectfully and civilly make their points without being slandered and name-called.

The thing about that is that different people react to things different ways. Bruce Wayne is a particular kind of person, and this behavior seems contrary to that person as he has been demonstrated consistently and with importance over the decades. It's a big part of who he is.

I'm fine with it as Elseworlds, but Bruce's sentimentality and desire to protect and honor his parents' legacy (focally, the Manor itself), are huge parts of his character that I hold dear, so my preference will always lean away from the choice Zack's made here, even though I respect it as it's own thing.

I was hoping JL would be focused on telling the story of a Batman who is redeeming himself after having lost his way temporarily (that does happen in the comics from time to time too), and we'd see the light in him. That thread was left dangling, I'm sure in large part due to WB's knee-jerk mandates.

Zack's Vero ideas (which, mind you, appear to just be his own musings and not something put through the writing process professionally with Terrio or anybody) suggest that he's been like this all along, which weirdly contrasts with all the hints BvS gave us with the Robin costume, the dream about going to the light (and Zack's Vero description of it's meaning, in fact), conversations with Alfred, and of course the edited line from Gordon in the JL trailer.

I was expecting a spin on the Lonely Place of Dying arc. This Vero answer sounds more like Flashpoint Thomas Wayne than Bruce Wayne.

You are correct. I always go back to his quote, and I know everyone hates it, about how he would have had Batman raped in prison in Nolan's version. I think that sets the tone for his broken version in BvS...and we will never know about JL exactly.

His Batman wasn't an exploration I could identify with, which is why I view his work as an Elseworld story.

          7. Rust Avatar
            Rustreplying to kan

I figure his head works like that, but WB, Terrio, and Goyer kind of temper his ideas back to conform them more appropriately to the classical idea of the characters.

More than that, I don't necessarily consider this canon with BvS so much as it's just him off-the-cuff spitballing what he imagines.

            Definitely Elseworld.

          8. kan Avatar
            kanreplying to Rust

Yeah, I figure there is someone, maybe Goyer and the others as you stated, that kept his Batman from totally floating in the serial killer pool.

Good point, even in interviews, it seems like his "spitballing." Always starting with, "What if... I, I , I could see..." If I had to diagnosis him, I bet he has some form of ADHD, mind always freeballing in all directions.

Next week on Dr Kan..."was Alfred actually in BvS, or was he a figment of Batman's imagination? Stay tuned."

the overall problem is that NONE OF THIS IS IN THE MOVIE.

the batman of BvS is a jackass batman that we're told in interviews "is tortured", but there's never anything in the movie that shows us why, how and how much he's tortured so we can't quite tell why he's slipped. (sure there's 3 nanoseconds of robin suit if you can even recognize it as such, but that's about it). the problem is that the movies never give us time to learn what happened and how it affected bats, so they leave us stumped with his behavior.

this is just another example of this: you can't just leave Wayne manor out and then explain it in an interview a year later: if you're doing this we need a SCENE IN THE MOVIE that brings this up and clears it out. simple as that.

      1. ShatteredWorld Avatar

as for the theatrical release, it showed me the death of his parents and nothing else I could identify with him killing innocent people or destroying wayne manor, in fact it didnt evwn show him destroy or abandon wayne manor - it just showed IT destroyed and abandoned without hinting whether thatyou was of his will or against it, so I was overall rather confused.

It was so cool to imagine that the burnt Wayne mansion along with that Robin costume painted by the Joker is a leftover of some hugely important battle from the past - an assault on Bruce's very home, 'cause in this universe by that time the Joker had already knew who the Batman is. Because this Batman has a rich history behind him before "BvS".

And surely your argument isn't ironic considering you Snyder fans are also the first to pretend Batfleck is the "most comic book accurate Batman ever". In which case, why would it even matter if people had "preconceived views"? They would be views based on the comics, so your argument is a non starter anyways. But again, who am I to judge, right?

This is silly. I think Snyder needs to just calm down for a little while. Or at this point, he's just kinda trolling to pass the time. For some people after a tragic event... it’s easier to get rid of things that remind you of better times. because every time the person who is suffering sees something it causes pain. which is why Bruce would leave things to rot. it’s not a good way to heal and it sounds like this Bruce Wayne never did... in a way that is actually in line with the character. because anyone who dresses like a bat to fight crime has not healed fully in some way or another.

I agree, I did like some parts of BvS. I don't mind Snyder's style but his ability to tell a story cohesively has been extremely off for the DC Universe. Especially when he has tried to put his own spin on things. It didn't seem so bad with Watchmen or 300. But maybe that's because he stuck to style and keep the story aspect extremely close to the vest, without changing much from the actual comics.

That said i enjoyed BvS UE but do not blindly over look its flaws and never fail to feel a twinge of regret, when i think of how much better it could have been.
