Jeffrey Dean Morgan thinks 'Watchmen' was "ahead of its time" (video)

Variety caught up with Jeffrey Dean Morgan last night at the premiere of his new movie, Rampage. When asked about his 2009 Zack Snyder movie, Watchmen, Morgan had nothing but nice things to say.

"I'm very proud of that movie," Morgan said. "People are still finding it and watching it. I think it will have fans forever. I think it was ahead of its time." Morgan went on to say he recently caught the end of the movie on TV and loved it. Check out his full reply in the video below.

As you know, Jeffrey Dean Morgan reteamed with Zack Snyder in Batman v Superman and played Thomas Wayne. He's been teasing that he'd love to play Batman in Flashpoint, but nothing has been confirmed.

      I remember seeing it at the theater and i didn't like it at all, the marketing and trailers sold a completely different movie. A few years later, i gave it another chance and i really liked it, i admit that it grew on me.

        Yeah I've heard a lot of people who didn't see it in theaters and only watched the directors cut really enjoyed it. I've actually met very few people who saw it in theaters and enjoyed it (only one person so far).

Thing with Watchmen is that Snyder ruined it. The whole point of watchmen (well, one point) was that the heroes were emphatically NOT superheroes.
Snyder ignores this, and then has Rorschach grappling up a skyscraper like Batman, when in the comic he patiently scaled it (ala Adam West), he has Comedian punching through columns of concrete like it's nothing, etc.
His Nixon was absolutely terrible, also.
It wasn't a terrible movie. But just because it's pretty doesn't mean it's good, either.
And the stupid easter eggs...making Batman a comic AND making the waynes and Bruce Wayne real....and the age of a kid who would read Batman comics....

  It is a great movie, but is Snyder version of Watchmen and not so much of an adaptation, if that makes sense, and the proof of that is that Hollis Mason has a copy of "Watchmen" the comic book on his bookshelf.

Peep dat ultimate cut if you haven't. The epic length with everything in it (specifically black freighter) makes it feel right. Showed my gf who loved the book this version and she loved it first watch, except for Malin Akerman lol

    If we're really going to talk masterpieces, then the original comic book is where it's at. Watchmen is a great movie, but the comic was absolutely a masterpiece.

  So basically you highlight something great with Gifs what Alan Moore made and not Snyder, opening montage aside everything great about the film came from Moore not Snyder. Most of the stuff Snyder came up with are far by the worst parts like OTT violence, fighting and gore and a much inferior ending.

  I've liked all of his comic book works so far. I don't think 'masterpiece' is in my vocabulary, but his work is in the higher circle of the genre pretty easily.
  Watchmen has the most nitpicks for me, but I can forgive them. It's one of those things where I just tell people to watch it, but not before reading the book. Not only to have a better grasp of the story and Moore's intentions, but because it actually helps you appreciate and understand the movie adaptation too.

    Exactly. One big aspect of the book was breaking down the mythology of superheroes, effectively calling bullshit on the whole concept. To get the film just as the craze was starting instead of after, say, Avengers 4 was really a missed opportunity for the film to be seen by the GA in the way the book was.
    Also, they had been trying to get the movie made for decades; I remember when Sam Hamm wrote the original script and Terry Gilliam was going to direct. The fact that Zack Snyder was the one who finally got it made was a big part of why they gave him MoS.

  In terms of more appropriate timing for the concept and stirring the pot as Moore intended, yeah... but I think the larger audience would reject it even more today. Dark superhero movies are taboo now. They were more acceptable right after The Dark Knight, when Watchmen came out.
  Culture is so tribal, extremist, and focused on the flavor of the week right now. People clearly don't want to see that challenged, or they start spitting venom. Or they just yawn because the 'dark trend' is so last decade. :P

    I don't know if I agree with this either. Being dark wasn't its flaw, like BvS. The things those two movies did have in common are poor timing and pacing issue. Some scenes were overly long, and the flow was off from one scene to the next.

It WAS. Watchmen Ultimate Cut is a work of art, it gets more relevant with time and every time you see it you discover new details, it is an awesome movie. That one, Mad Max Fury Road and Blade Runner 2039 are some of the best practically non-commercial movies that warner has done, masterpieces.

And so he should be proud. Watchmen is a comic book movie like no other. It took me a while to appreciate it fully, but once I saw the ultimate cut, I was hooked. There are some things it did that were worse than the comic (I prefer Rorschach burning down the pedophile 's house vs. granting him a quick death by instant kill), but there were some things that were better too (the ending ).

I don't mind the film and i do think its a good film but it does highlight everything wrong about Snyder when it comes to adapting comic books. I won't bother listing all the problems with the film but safe to say i think Snyder lost a ton of what made the comic book such a masterpiece, he did get casting for the most part right though and the visuals were amazing as expected from a Snyder film. Its a solid 7/10 but that's all really.
