'Shazam' star Zachary Levi fires back at fans who don't like his costume (video)

Since Shazam started shooting in February we've seen a lot of set photos and videos of Zachary Levi in his costume. Some photos weren't that great, while more recent ones were very high quality. The reactions from fans about the suit have been mixed. Last night, during a live Q&A on Instagram, Shazam star Zachary Levi had some harsh words for fans who don't like his suit.

"Why the crap suit?," one fan asked. "Well I don't think it's a crap suit," Levi replied. "I think my suit is f*cking bomb, to be perfectly honest. I know there hasn't been an officially released photo yet but there have been incredibly high quality photos that have been released."

"I think any of you people out there who are still hung up on what the suit looks like are just wanting to be angry for angry sake. I think you're very insecure, you're probably dealing with some stuff in your own life and you feel a little powerless and I'm sorry that you do."

Levi went on to suggest that fans who don't like the Shazam costume should reflect on their life and why they are so negative, and then give him a "fair shake". You can check out his full reply in the video below.

pretty good response. Wait until the trailer at least. I think the suit looks dumb too, but Im going to wait until the movie comes out before I complain about it.

    Let’s put it this way. You and your wife have your new child (congrats, btw). Now the two of you couldn’t be more proud of what you created. He/she looks just like you wanted, all of your family thinks the kid looks just like your grandpa Al when he was a baby back in the 40s, who was a very handsome child in his day.
    But all of a sudden, here comes your distant cousin, Gail, who by no means has any right to comment on your life and family, because she doesnt have one of her own and probably never will. So Gail decides to walk over to you (after she’s been at your house, she’s been taking photos of your property and posting photos on line on websites talking about how ugly everything you’ve built is) comes up to you and asks, “why such an ugly child?” Now wouldn’t that possibly trigger you to kind of go on a rant on your underachieving cousin Gail? Especially in such an public and fun environment like a social gathering to celebrate and talk (insta-story)

        I'm not a fan of muted colors of the MoS suit but there's no doubt it looks fantastic and high quality made, really like the cape as well.

        For me, the problem was that the muscles were EXTRA airbrushed (with white, not blue?) this time for some reason, and no one got the memo to blend that out in post. lol

        Yeah, spreading out and squaring off the ribbing, cuffs, and “belt” for BvS were horrible ideas. I adored the smooth, organic flow those features had in MoS. Way more aesthetically pleasing and appropriate to the alien look they were going for. However, the BvS suit definitely did have a few improvements I love on their own that I wish could’ve just been added to the MoS suit as is, and it would’ve made for a pretty perfect Superman suit - mainly the swirl of Kryptonian text in the middle of the S.

        Muscle definition is barely/not visible under clothing, thats why extra padding helps, but shazam seems too much.

        I think this "too much" is more about the fabric with no brgith than the size. It makes the parts look bigger. The Sups suit has more notable parts, the Shazam suit is more tradicional, like an almost normal fabric. So we have to wait to see how it will works on the screen.

        It's because muscle doesn't show up very well through real life fabric - especially when you're trading out fabric for alien under-armor.
        Certainly doesn't show definition anything near what we see in the comics, which was what they were trying to match here.

        I think they use the fake muscles to fit more the suits, not only to make the actors bigger. Remember the first Spiderman movie? Tobey was in a good shape to do that, maybe stronger than the character. But he had fake muscles untill in his legs to look better in film without foulds or crampled parts. This way the suits look more like in the comics. The design of CW's suits isn't bad and you can check it in their animations, but they don't look like in the comics because they have more realistic fabrics. I hope they find a midle ground between fake muscles (CBM) and cosplay looks (series).

        It doesn't need to be armored. That will just slow him down. Batman needs to be able to move as swiftly as possible.
        We don't want to wind up having a Batman that can barely move, like Christian Bale's Batman.

        And that's why we wound up with Nolan's shitty slow fight scenes. Horrible trade off. I'll take exciting fight scenes with unnoticeable CGI anyday.
        Most of the scene was practical, and the end result was a far more satisfying fight scene than any of Nolan's fight scenes.

        I'm not sure if you were being sarcastic here, but in case you weren't, I always thought it was a terrible tactical mistake to advertise how rich you are to your enemies when you're trying to remain anonymous as a vigilante.
        The Begins suit is more my flavor than the TDK one for that reason. It looks less like a dead giveaway.

      Politely disagree. The onesie, pajamas look with fake muscle padding was terrible.
      Even if the Black Panther suit was based off its design, it looked a whole lot better in execution.
      The only decent costume in the DCEU right now is Diana's. The MCU just does a better job overall in my opinion.

      In the film yeah sure but in real life the suit isn't actually that great, its because of that i'm giving this suit a chance until a official pic comes out with all the effects, color grading and air brushing added.

        Sure we get it, they both have fake muscle sculpts but as long as the actors take the time to actually get in good shape I say it's fair to give us a little bit more of a comics accurate look.
        If the actors were skinny and didn't actually get into shape, and then wore muscle suits it'd be ridiculous.
        And then as for the look... I mean comparing them to 10 $ halloween costumes is just silly.

      The armor layer underneath the layer of flexible material is likely what produced those sparks. We see Alfred working on it, and he references it again at some other point.

        I'm not saying it was microscopically flawless in it's realistic display, but there was a basic logic there that holds up well enough. The sparks have an explanation.
        I didn't look for whether the bullet left a mark on the cowl, but it doesn't matter or effect anything of significance in the moment. The bullet was deflected, the armor was demonstrated, and the point is effectively across.
        As for the degree of flex when Superman removes it, you could chalk that up to his super-grip if you want. :P lol
        The kind of detail you're demanding be met just isn't the important in the bigger scope of making an already heavy-lifting movie. Most people go with the in-movie logic without questioning it, and aren't hyper-analyzing for things like this.
        The illusion isn't broken for them by this any more than knowing something is clearly CG. It's armored, demonstrates the armor, and looks like a mask when it's taken off.
        For Batman's mask, it's a lot to ask of something so specifically fictional but meant to feel real without betraying the comic look at the same time. Short of going with the helmet look that purists already complained about in The Dark Knight, this is about what I expect.
        I kinda love the 'Bat Turn' from Begins and 89/Returns, and the helmet idea is fine with me personally, as it seems more logical and alludes to him being like a knight, which I find to be appropriately romantic, but... Fans have been demanding a comic-accurate Batsuit for a looong time, with a vocal minority mocking elements of the various rubber black suits to the point that I stopped bothering to reason with them.
        To me, a little flex in the cowl in a split-second moment is an okay compromise if the 'comic book' appearance makes more people happy.
        Dunno if I'd compromise on the trunks though. Good riddance. heheh

        I don't disagree with you on any of that, and everything you're saying is perfectly in-line.
        My argument is more that it's not a huge deal in the scope of the full movie in this case. It's small enough that it doesn't distract most people, and many who do notice it (myself included) are able to easily overlook or forgive it, especially when we do have context that the cowl was armored. I don't need to see the bullet mark to believe it.
        To a reasonable degree, as long as it's not a very pronounced immersion-breaker (like the CG for Ares' face in WW), I'll cut any movie this level of slack.
        As for the trunks, I was just teasing around. I don't hate them with any fervor. I prefer not having them, and am not bothered by this instance of negative space, but I can still read any of my favorite books and not hold it against them. :)
        I think what you were saying about a black Batsuit not needing trunks lends to why I don't mind it in Man of Steel and BvS. Those suits were dark enough (or tastefully shadowed) that the excess of one color doesn't draw the eye awkwardly.
        New 52 Superman is typically colored a much brighter blue, so the lack of trunks stands out more there.

    That's just a bunch of bullshit and a discredit to the costume designers. And I completely and utterly disagree with the MCU having universally better costume design. They all look like the same "tactical/military suits" recolored for each different hero. This is extremely apparent in the Magazine cover that show cased most of the cast of heroes. Their costumes feel uninspired and generic as fuck. I'd rather have a touch of unrealism than to have everyone wear the same crap. BP which is one of my favorite suits in the MCU is also padded as fuck. You just can't tell because it's all black and wearing a full helmet.

This doesn't just apply to you only but a good 85% of the DCEU fanboys on here, there's a few fans of BvS/DCEU i don't mind because they actually don't do the stuff i said and can hold a decent debate what's reasonable but sadly there's not many of them on here.
      End of the day the bunch of you just can't accept that your love for these films is a minority thing and that films like BvS are widely regarded as bad films what has a small fanbase with it.

Also funny how they speak badly of Bale, because "he wasn't like the comics in this or that way" but apparently, none of that sacred comic book accuracy matters when it comes to Batman's personality and his philosophy, both of which Nolan and Bale nailed, but Snyder ruined.
        I take those traits over a comic book accurate suit any day. And it's simply a matter of fact that Bale is the closest to the comics we've ever gotten, in terms of narrative and character.
        I've no issue with people liking Batfleck, but like I said before, this usually comes from such a dishonest place, like "he's the most comic book accurate", which is factually not true (beyond simple aesthetics). And their contempt for the no-kill rule makes me question if they were ever really Batman fans to begin with. It's arguably his most defining trait, philosophically speaking.

        Totally. I'm also not saying Bale is a perfect copy of the comic book Batman I have in mind... it's just that he comes the closest, for obvious reasons.
        Thing is, I don't mind these films having a different take on the character (Nolan is still very much rooted in realism, very much unlike the comics, though I don't need to tell you this I'm sure). But Nolan developed his world and movies to the point that it makes sense and the audience (including die hard Batman fans) can accept that different take. Especially when the core aspects of Bale's character is still very much in lign with who Batman is.
        What did Snyder do? No development or explanation whatsoever, so we're left wondering as to why his Batman is such an insufferable psycho killer. And then these fanboys have the audacity to say "BUT IT'S IN THE MOVIE!!!!!!!!! DIDN'T YOU SEE THE ROBIN SUIT?!?!?! HE DIED AND THAT'S WHAT MADE BATMAN CHANGE!!!!", which is fucking ludicrous to say the least.
        Because 1: at no point does the film explicitly or even implicitly state that this is his motivation and 2: you can't honestly tell me that the entire reason as to why this Batman kills so easily hinges entirely on a 2 second cameo, which people could only hope to understand if they have some knowledge about Batman's comic book history, which admittedly, is only 1% of the audience.
        If anything, this would just prove how pathetic a storyteller Zack truly is, should he truly believe this would explain everything (or anything at all, really).
        Thing is, I don't believe this argument for a second. There's one reason as to why he kills, and one reason only... and it's because Snyder just loves his heroes who quote: "kill people and have sex". Snyder doesn't give a fuck about these characters (which he's explicitly admitted). And yet these supposed "die-hard fans" defend THIS guy? Dare I say, it almost makes me angry to see such hypocrisy and disrespect towards the characters they claim to love and defend.

      I tend to find the attacking happens first, though. Though some Snyder fans are ridiculous fanatics, and there’s no excuse for that necessarily, I do think that the group has had to put up with a LOT of completely undeserving hate. The costume is pretty the same of latest comics. I can't understand why people should complain about that. I don't mind the suit and do like it (not a fan of the padding though) but that response is a bit immature, end of the fucking day you can't go through life liking everything you hear and see, the complaints about his costume have weight to them and if they want people to like the costume more maybe they should get on and release an actual proper look at it with all the effects and color grading added.

  The difference is he's meant to be professional and a mature adult and not attack the people who will see this film, attacking fans isn't the best way to make people support you. Sure have some fun with it but don't act like a child (what is ironic considering the character he's playing) about it because people don't like your costume, he should take a page out of Henry Cavil or the Marvel lots book who have fun with criticism and don't get bitchy about it.

The costume is pretty much the way it has been portrayed in the comics for decades. I don't think true fans would have had it any other way. It's possible that the detractors just want attention.
