New 'Shazam' set photos give best look at the costume yet

Over the last week or so we've seen many photos and even some videos from the set of Shazam. They were all taken by fans at a distance, but today the first photos from a professional photographer with a DSLR camera have hit the web.

In the detailed shots courtesy of eTalk, you can see the texture on Zachary Levi's Shazam costume, something we hadn't previously been able to see in the lower quality phone photos. There's even some great shots of Mark Strong as Doctor Sivana.

    I've been coming here for at least 3 years now and though smarmy and concieted he's still better than most of the people here when it comes to deconstructing movies. And having a civil discussion includes "negative bullshit" and debate. That's the point of a comment section; it's not just supposed to be a sea of yes men or sycophants to a given director. The dude clearly loves Batman and D.C. Properties, but was understandably disappointed in the DCEU offerings on the whole as was I; is that really so tough to swallow? That we can love Batman and just think these movies generally weren't very good in the last 6-7 years and kind of pissed all over beloved characters? It's not being a troll to have an opinion that isn't just glowing admiration of a guy in a suit from a set pic.

      i dont think he is a troll and I do think he is good at explaining WHY he doesn't like certain things. I just dont agree with it most of the time. I don't really bother debating with him anymore since I know it will be pointless. He has his opinions. I have mine. In this case though, as I have argued with him the merits of the batfleck suit before, I would counter him this time by saying that the padding actually serves an even better purpose here. Considering we likely won't ever even see Levi out of costume, the illusion will always remain intact that he is actually that big. Though his consistent posting of that muscle picture "dopes" come off as a bit trollish.

    I thought that material was meant to be Kryptonian - so why would Shazam have a suit made of that? THat doesnt seem to make sense to me, story wise.

      It’s not actually the same texture. Superman’s has an ornate interlocking link pattern, like chainmail. This seems more like just a bunch of dimples or threading.

      Similar but not the same. Rumor has it that Batson Batson actually idolizes superman and he will make cameo... Perhaps it could be as simple as whoever has the Shazam Powers can slightly tweek the suit to their liking

  I want to see that padding now in action. It's feels like way too much in these stills, but I am optimistic about the appearance after post-production gets their hands on it.
  I want it to be a kid's impression of the muscles they would have as a superhero.

        That said, even that is a bad example, because BP's suit didn't have the ridiculous amount of padding that this Shazam suit has. What are they gonna do in post? Add even more muscles, like BP? Nah... This is the suit we're getting and you know it.

        Yes it was. Because you actually got to see Henry's physique which while not as big definitely mimics the suits muscularity. With Raimi, you get to see Peter's actual body one and while definitely impressive would not look like that in a suit.

        Not they are not. Because in both of the pictures you can visibly see abs on the suit when there is no crease to indicate separation of muscle there. It looks like he literally spray painted abs on the suit to look more muscular.

        There's visual depth to the midsection from the front. Because it's a painted adittion. The MoS suit has a muscular mid section due to the under suit. I have seen the costume up close. The abs are also slightly padded to extenuate the abs.

        comparing spiderman to superman isn't exactly fair thou. spiderman is very lean and not overly muscular. in contrast, superman is supposed to be one of the most muscular characters. Plus, look up fitness models and pro athletes wearing under armor and you must certainly can see their muscles through the clothes.

        I’m not sure it was day to day. It seemed ceremonial or official. And it definitely wasn’t full on heavy armor, just like a protective under suit (I theorize). The reason I think this is because: 1. We all saw that the muscle padding in the Batsuit wound up being from an armored undersuit in JL, 2. Wilkinson said the Kryptonian skinsuits were supposed to resemble chainmail, and 3. His suit design is at least partly based on the New 52’s suit, which is explained as being an armored Kryptonian bio-tech. It’s not that Superman needs armor, but that the Kryptonians used it. It would also explain why their crests are on it - like medieval knights had when donning their armor as well. This theory isn’t reaching, and there is precedent for it - even knights layered armor types, plate over mail, etc.

        i believe they explained in BTS stuff that the idea of the Super suit was that it was the Kryptonian equivalent of chain mail which is why they wear it under the battle armor. As for why they wear it day to day: something, something, alien culture. It's basically a union suit that offers light protection as far as I can tell.

        except for superman and batman, their physique mostly matches the suit. the batsuit is meant to look big, to look intimitdating, cavill's physique matches the suit. captain marvel/shazam basically has the powers of ancient gods, so of course, his body would look god like, as would his suit.

        it actually does matter. they most certainly did not cg batfleck's body. check the behind the scenes. no cgi was used on his body. if you think he doesn't have abs, then you really need a reality check. i'n not saying there was no padding, there was but most of it was affleck. and just because they have definiton made on their suits doesn't take away they physical validity.
        they look like superheros. cavill looks glorious in the suit while affleck looks intimidating, as they should be.

        You can ask the same question of TDK Trilogy Batsuit and the armor of the ancient Greeks. Plus, considering the very organic-looking architecture and design and technology of the Kryptonian culture we see throughout MoS, emphasizing the appearance of the physical body in their clothing seems extremely appropriate.
        Or heck, maybe it IS a material that’s showing off the real physique. It is extraterrestrial, after all.

        Really? ‘Cause TDK Trilogy Batsuits just seem to be vaguely replicating his muscles with armor to me. And again, ancient armors.
        It is still movable, though. Can you not see Cavill moving, lol? IRL, they have chrome plates underneath the blue in line with his muscles, highlighting them - yet he is flexible.
        We see Batman’s armored undersuit in JL. Let that speak for itself.
        Resembling muscles through use of armor can be a clever way to retain vague realism while still being true to the iconic comics looks.

        There is if you’re also using the armor as an excuse to resemble comic books.
        Or if you come from an alien culture that uses organic designs in everything, then there’s that, too. Or it’s just an alien material that can show off physique.
        I’m still not convinced they digitally changed his physique, so...
        The suits are flexible, with added padding/plates over certain areas, with flexible material still between each plate. Once again, observe Cavill and Affleck moving without a problem in their suits.
        It’s not truly a fabric suit, though, so that’s not something they would do. The cowl protects from bullets because it has a titanium understructure (and the cowl itself is probably a protective material, too) - a running theme with this Batsuit, armor hidden underneath plain looking material.

        Spidey doesn't need to be muscular though js. Its not required for him to look very "heroic" and larger than life like it is for the likes of Supes, Batman, and in this case, Shazam. Also, I would argue that a muscle suit in this context works more than it does for other characters since we likely wont even see Levi out of the suit. So the illusion can always stay in tact.

  When I saw him during the Game Awards, it was like it unlocked the hype door for Shazam for me. I'm 100% confident he was the right pick for the character after that.

I really like the suit. (Go ahead, LegendInMyMind, post the Halloween costume.)
There is really only one photo where the padding creases, the one with the left arm being raised, but my guess is that that will be taken out in post-production.
Up close, for real, it's a beautiful suit, and it's going to look killer after it's run through production.
I am really hopeful for this film. If it, Aquaman, WW2, and Matt Reeves's Batman can just sing, we'll be riding steady for a while.

  Very few people whined when Batman's armor creased in Batman Begins set and promotional photos.
  Most of us understood that we had to be realistic and roll with some things, as well as remain patient with the movie magic process.

  Note the way the armor folds over awkwardly at the stomach and shoulders depending on the pose, completely shattering the illusion that he's the real Batman wearing REAL ARMOR! What a fail! Get it together, DC!

    Nice link Rust regarding Avenue Potter. Always loved the still photo of Bale in the black and gray suit on top of the building. I remember when Batman Begins first came out and seeing the black and gray suit in that still photo and being so hyped about finally seeing Batman portrayed the way I wanted to see him on screen..... only for that suit never to be seen on screen till the very end scene of the film with him and Gordon when the color wasn't even visible. I had lost that photo over the years... it's nice to see that again
    It's only a still but that's Bale as true comic-book Batman. Perfect height, look, it's spot on. Nothing like sticking to the source material. I'm a sucker for the details.

        What bugs me is the number of Copied/Inspired characters that were or will be brought to big screen by Marvel first and have become more popular than the original character..So when DC does eventually bring some of these originals, they will be accused of copying Marvel by most who don't know/care about the Comic-book history . Not saying that DC hasn't copied/got inspired from Marvel, but Marvel's certainly stole the Mojo of 1st appearance on Big Screen from DC(DC were too slow showcasing new heroes barring Aquaman.....Marvel had a great plan for all their characters and clearly a more successful one ). WB better make Green Light Corps before Nova Corps take up more importance in pop culture cause 2011 movie is a joke to many. I have been Eagerly waiting for Blue Beetle and Dr. Fate too !

        100 percent agree. This has bothered me for a long time now. Im scared to death that marvel is going to get to Nova before Green lantern. If we end up in a scenario where people are comparing Nova to GL because the former movie came first, Im gonna be seriously pissed. Thats just wrong.
        This one of DC's biggest issue imho. Even justice League, despite being a fairly average movie overall likely would have been received better had it come out 15 years ago. But due to multiple avengers films, the novelty of the first big superhero epic team up is gone. And now the Justice League will have to constantly live the shadow of the Avengers. Thats why this Legion of Doom thing excites me. its something different. But if they are going to do this, they HAVE to do it before marvel can get anywhere close to Avengers vs X Men or Dark Avengers type movie.
        I am eagerly anticipating the production start for Suicide Squad 2. I really want to see the property redeem itself and have a good bit of faith in Gavin o Connor. But its also because X Force is coming. I would honestly feel more comfortable if Squad 2 could beat X Force to release. Then again, this would not bea problem if this first movie didn't suck. Its all just really frustrating man

        Probably because Snyder really fucked him over in BVS theatrical cut. Not to mention who goes for full injustice and dark Knight story lines to start a freaking cinematic universe. I'm so angry he used those story lines and so poorly to boot. Dark Knight should have been at the end of the joined universe after you saw batman and supes collaborate but still had a chance to see the differences in their philosophies. If Snyder had just directed the movies and not been in control of the story lines those movies could have been so great. I even love MoS to this day. So frustrated at the missed opportunities

        I was skeptical of him being Batman at first, loved his interpretation of Bruce Wayne in BvS though and I will say I was wrong about the casting for what they were going with but I stand by saying they should have gone younger across the board. I can't complain about any of the casting honestly I like them all for the story lines they were going for. Just not what I would have done. It doesnt help matters with the break in between MoS and BvS. I just wish the story was vastly different. I would have liked a worlds finest movie rather than BvS

  Nice to see some more of the texture on the Shazam. But still needs some more detailing. The belt and shoes are weak. That gold/bronze needs to pop a bit more. Needs more regalness. There's not enough awe. It's a bit too safe. But it's good. However, we can do better. Seek to improve Team DC.

      I hear you. It doesn't need a lot of detailing but it just looks too vanilla and bland right now in these photos. And though digital work may enhance it a bit, they don't need to bother go that route when they've made such great suits like Supes and Bats and even Wonder Woman.
      It's a bit underwhelming seeing this even with all the main parts there.

It has more detail and looks better up close. I am sure once they deepen the colors in post production, that suit will look deep red instead of pinkish-red. It will be funny if Shazam ends up being the symbol of hope in the DCEU the way Superman should have been...thanks to Snyder's Man of Mope.

With Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Deathstroke and now also Shazam and Aquaman (in his movie) they adapted the comic book costumes very faithfully. It's modernized but it has absolutely everything that defines their costumes in the source material. It looks absolutely the way it should.
Which is why it pisses me off even MORE that they could not just do the same with Flashs costume. Why couldn't they just stick to Barrys comic book suit like they did with all these other costumes. Don't tell me it would not look good or can't be done in live action. If they can do this with Superman and Shazam they could do it with Flash.

  I've been expecting them to eventually. The assumption a lot of people have is that Barry's suit in JL is just an early prototype - much as Cyborg's body was confirmed to be an early, rough thing that he modified at the end of JL to resemble the comics beautifully.
  Have patience. I think we'll get the Flash costume we want. :)

        There can be lighter or funnier stories. But you can’t completely cross the boundaries of what would work in the established world. LOTR would not fit in the Star Wars universe. Psych would not fit in the world of The Blacklist. The last season of Lost does not fit in with the rest of Lost :P

        For the third? fourth? twentieth? time, it’s not just about tone. It’s about what could actually happen within the bounds of the established universe. That does allow for some diversity, but everything still has to feel like it could fit in that world.
        The MCU has boundaries that none of its movies cross, either. No magic, a quasi-realism, etc. And they only introduced crazier elements as escalation made it possible, they didn’t throw everything all in all at once from the start of the MCU; it started small and more grounded and gradually expanded from there.

        First of all, there is reason to believe the gods of the DCEU are extraterrestrial in nature, which I can explain if you like. Second of all, even if they were just straight up mythological figures, that is still not outlandish enough to merit a movie about a little boy shouting a magic word and then romping around as a big superhero. That’s still beyond what WW established in ridiculousness. It would work great as a action-comedy set in its own world, but not as a proper installment of the DCEU - the same universe as MoS. But, and I’ve said this before, perhaps they’ll somehow find a way to write it that I would never be able to imagine which does make Shazam seem like it fits in the DCEU. Who knows. I just highly doubt it. It’ll probably be a DCEU movie in name only, and not have any real connections, or at least I hope.

        While it is a factor, I disagree that it's that simple. I've had lots of discussions with detractors of the DCEU, and plenty of them are fine with darker films and darker takes on characters, and were focused on other complaints like the writing, editing, and acting.
        I've actually seen tons of people get mad that their complaints are being unfairly brushed off as shallow-minded whines about 'dark, dour tone' when they insist their criticisms are the real problems; problems that go deeper than tone preference, and don't even regard tone at all sometimes.
        Either way, if the prevailing tone preference is based on popularity, you can be damn sure that you have nothing to worry about in that department anymore. :P
        As you said, it's contributed to the DCEU getting a lot of hate. WB has heard, and they seem to be bouncing the other direction very sharply as a result, if we can judge from the tone of Shazam and Justice League.

        I think most characters in DC are pretty 'tone-malleable', if I'm allowed to coin that term. lol
        Shazam could be done a little darker than he has been recently in the books and still be great. Does it have to be darker to work in the DCEU? Naw. I think it'll be fine as is. It'd be neat to play around with the idea though.
        I've said this before, but I view the movies as "Soft Elseworld". They don't have to 100% adapt the exact mainline current comic series to be valid to me. I'll be happy with the tone no matter which way they take it. :)

Goyer and Christopher Nolan worked together on bringing about the idea of rebooting Superman in a similarly realistic and serious way.         How about I frame the issue this way: did you know that conflicting tone was one of the biggest issues complained of in regard to JL? Now how well do you think a movie like SHAZAM would fair if that’s the case?
        And beyond that, when watching a movie like MoS or BvS, did you ever at any point begin to wonder when a little kid might run on screen and shout a silly word before spontaneously becoming a full-grown man with magical powers? Probably not. And that’s because the DCEU has been presented as a fairly realistic and serious world, overall, with sci-fi explanations for tons of stuff and always the presentation of being like the real world, despite the fictional characters and events that occur within it. That does not preclude humor, like with Barry Allen or some of the Suicide Squad, or seemingly fantastic occurrences, like the Amazons or gods who are canonically described as merely “metahumans” or “extra-dimensional entities” “from another world.” Just like the real real world does not preclude humor and seemingly fantastic occurrences. But you honestly can’t see how a goofy little boy romping around as a magical superhero using magic words would NOT fit in such a world?

        I don't have to describe what makes them poorly made because they are pretty universally considered as poorly made films. That's reflected in the both audience and critic reviews. JL has higher scores in both categories by both audiences and critics. You're going to find very few reviews that complain about Conflicting tone and the score. They all bring up the same complaints they brought up with BvS to a lesser extent.

        Good example recently is King's Batman run, one issue had Batman, Selina, Superman and Lois go to a fancy dress fair to hang out while dressed as each other (so Bruce is Superman, Clark is Bats ect), it was fun and goofy and everyone loved it and thought it was one of the best issues in King's run, next issue later was a really dark, violent and moody story what would have got a R-Rating for sure if it was a film and guess what? Everyone loved it and thought it was one of the best issues in King's run. Right there a complete shift in tone and feel but no one cared on complained because they were both fantastic stories what nailed at what they were telling.

Yet they are all about magic and fantasy. Now take a look at classic fairytales, like Bluebeard and Little Red Riding Hood. These stories are often completely absurd and seemingly random in their use of the supernatural. There is no sense of reality within those tales like what is clearly established in the works of Tolkien and Rowling. You see, Fiction is not as stupid and simple as you seem to like to paint it. Just because something is fictional or fanciful or even magical, does not mean it will fit everything else that may be able to be described similarly. Just as one could probably never fathom Santa Claus and his Christmas elves flying on a sleigh through the Battle of the Hornburg in LOTR, dropping freshly wrapped Christmas presents at the feet of the Rohirrim as they are being slayed by brutal Uruk warriors, even though both are fanciful and involve magic, the idea of a little boy shouting a silly word and spontaneously transforming into a superhero is incongruous with the world established by Man of Steel, in which superheroes are treated as real people who do things with real challenge and consequence and are psychologically and sociologically explored as if they were in our real world and are largely all given at least quasi-realistic explanations for the details of their existence.

The boundaries of the DCEU already encompass the basic elements of Shazam. Magic is a thing in the DCEU and so are thunder weilding, water bending beings exist in this Universe. So the magical aspects of Shazam shouldn't even be an issue. A kid getting magical powers is not any crazier than say Zeus creating a woman from nothing to defeat another god. Since it's insane to use the boundary of the universe argument, the only thing left to complain about is the tonal difference between the films.         Yes I have, and that is a bit of discontinuity, and is probably mainly because Tolkien didn’t originally plan to make LOTR at the time he wrote The Hobbit. There are even, if I recall, clocks mentioned in The Hobbit, which surely do not exist in LOTR. That’s what happens when planning isn’t done as thoroughly as possible. Not to knock Tolkien; it’s not really his fault, per se.

        Yeah, Winter Soldier isn't a comedy, but then again the first two Thors weren't, either. Ragnarok is an anomaly. Did it work as a film? Yes. But watching just the Thor movies back to back, and you'll see how out of place it feels in the trilogy. Movie goers didn't care since Rangarok was a solid film, and nobody cared about Thor outside of the Avengers to begin with. But again, the fact is that the current DCEU is decisively dark. No Marvel film even gets close to that.

The biggest sticking point for me is the fundamental concept itself of a little boy magically turning himself into a superhero. I would love a Shazam movie in its own continuity - that could be great fun and hilarity - but that just does not sound like it could be harmonized with the DCEU, at least from what I can imagine at the moment.

        My response would just be repeating what other people said about Aquaman/Atlantis/Wonder Woman, etc. I don't think it would compel you. haha
        For me, it's not a stretch to imagine Shazam in the same world as those two heroes - particularly Wonder Woman, because of the Greek god theme, which includes transforming oneself into alternative appearances (Ares does this in the film too).
        I'm hoping for something in the middle - lighter and friendly, but with a balance of meaning and depth. I think they could pull this off fantastically, but I'm very nervous it's going to be too far into Goof Land.
        We'll see. I'm still burned by JL, but I'm trying to have faith. Shazam has the potential to be inspiring for a lot of viewers.

        Like I said, PERHAPS there’s a way they could pull it off that I could buy, but I just really can’t see it happening. Especially since I genuinely see the mythological aspects of the DCEU so far as not so much magical, but more extraterrestrial in some way or another, due to some connections I have made between the films and especially in light of some things said in Suicide Squad.
        Remind me again when Ares changes his appearance? I know the gods must be able to, considering El Diablo and Enchantress and such, but I can’t remember Ares doing it...
        That’s the other thing that worries me. I seriously get the feeling this will just be a jokey, kiddy movie all the way.
        But hoping for the best is always good. It’s just sometimes hard to do after we were cheated so much with JL.

Marvel injected Galaxy of the Guardians with a lighter tone, and a sense of humor....and it fits into their Universe and works.         But DC has never been about that sort of cohesiveness, even in the comics. They've always given their group editors a great deal more control than Marvel did; in fact, most of the time they didn't have an EIC in the Stan Lee mold overseeing everything. The whole idea behind "filmmaker-driven" was/is to embrace that dissonance, to provide a variety of viewpoints and styles that are shown nonetheless to exist within the same world. So (especially with the through-story that was going to lead to JL2 off the table) it's a shared universe in the sense that, if Superman shows up, it's Cavill. If Batman shows up, it's Affleck (or whoever) and he has substantially the same suit and Batmobile we've already seen, etc. But to say there needs to be a cohesive tone flies in the face of everything DC has always stood for.

        I understand what you're saying, and I even mentioned that in one of my previous comments that Shazam can only be a part of this universe in concept. JL is often attacked by fans of DC that it was a complete change in tone, and rightfully so (although it was better than BvS imo). The change in tone was so abrupt that it felt disjointed. If they can bridge the gap between the dark and gritty to Shazam's lighter feel, then it might work, but it will no longer be faithful to ZS' Mopey Superman and Murderous Batman (which I'm totally down with).

        Snyder used a drepressing tone because that's what he likes, but it was very unfitting for someone like Superman who's about hope. Patty Jenkins on the other hand used color for storytelling purposes. The movie looked depressing in war scenes, but looked bright and beautiful when the scenes were lighter.

I like it very much now that I see it in high definition. There's a lot of padding but they may be there to keep Zachary warm too. But I like it and I like the subtle lines it has, and also the Tiger in the medallions. Is that Tawky Tawney?

I thought Superman was supposed to be the boy scout, but Zachary Levi's Shazam looks like a kid in costume! Total innocent naive boy scout look! Not the Shazam I was hoping for.

I honestly try so hard not to be negative about the latest DC decisions but... Seriously, you can see a 3 inch gap between his actual shoulders and his fake ones. That yellow. Ooof.
If this is just a film for the 8-15 age group then i wish them the best.

I really like the suit although its clear there's a ton of muscle padding, really looking forward to a promo pic though with all the added effects and stuff.

  You're exactly right. We have to understand that this is part of a process, and be patient for an official look instead of knee-jerk reacting to set photos taken by onlookers with their phones.
  I'm with you. It looks really promising so far, and I'm excited to see it with all the expected touch-ups. :)

    I mean yeah of course it doesn't too great right now but most costumes do look off with these types of photos, take Black Panther in Civil War in the set photos he looked pretty bad but once touch up and effects were added he looked amazing in the film.

Lol, someone over at WB doesn't know what proportion means. His forearms are a little small for 25 inch arms. Hope the padding also didnt skip leg day.
