on Joker 'Suicide Squad' deleted scene finally explained by David Ayer

Jared Leto wasn't shy about letting fans know the amount of Joker scenes that were cut from Suicide Squad. One scene was even in the trailers, and showed Joker after his helicopter crash throwing a smoke grenade. There's been a lot of speculation as to what was going on, but now we have a definitive answer from director David Ayer.

"After Joker dropped [Harley Quinn] from the [helicopter] and crashed, Enchantress made a deal with him," Ayer said on Twitter. "He was going to take Harley home and be “King of Gotham”. Harley stood up to him and refused to betray her new friends. The Squad turned on him and he escaped."

Ayer has spoken openly about Suicide Squad in the past year or so. He even admitted that one of his biggest regrets about the movie is not making Jared Leto's Joker the main villain.

The frustration is rea! This is only a small part of what has been changed.

SS has been completely changed. Dialogues have been cut and altered to become more polite.
Many scenes were cut, others were altered until little remains of what David Ayer did.

The dynamics between the characters were completely damaged

The squad was not that bunch of well-behaved criminals who almost didn't give Rick Flag and his military team any trouble. There were great fights scenes between the members of the Squad and obscene language.

It was in the fight with the Joker that Squad realized the importance of working as a team because until then they had fought each to save their own skin without caring what would happen to the rest of the group.

The scene where Harley turns against the Joker is breathtaking because their relationship is full of conflict and sexual tension.

It was a very intense scene between them and the best part of the movie. Well, I'm just saying an opinion of someone who watched the original film.

Yeah, the aesthetic was gaudy in a bad way, and I wasn't into the pimp and fetishy stuff either.

My preferred Joker isn't interested in being 'King' or being in control (he's ideally the antithesis of Batman, who is the control freak), and he isn't interested in cliche prison tattoos. He'd laugh at such egocentric societal trappings and the pathetic, pointless, illusory posturing involved in all that stuff.

It would be a joke to him, but this Joker seems to be one of the simple sheep that my kind of Joker would mock.

Not saying there can't be other versions, but I don't find that version, or the typical 'gangster with a clown gimmick', to be interesting whatsoever.

Ledger/Nolan all the way. Killing Joke and Scott Snyder's takes are up there too. Those are my Joker flavor of choice. :)

Snyder's Joker is epic. Ayer's wasn't bad tho. I saw way more of the Joker in Leto than I did in Ledger. Ledger felt way more Riddler-ish to me. Playing "unwinnable" games is totally The Riddler. Joker's just doing things. As for the looks, the only downside with Leto were the tatoos, but they weren't that disturbing in the movie. As for Ledger, he had great Joker clothing. But we can't compare em. We've seen too little of Letoker. They're pretty much the same kind of actor and I really liked Letoker for the little we've seen.

I consider Riddler and Joker (at their best) to be two sides of the same "Moriarty" coin. It's like they split Batman's version of Moriarty into two villains.

Riddler takes the intellect, wit, jealousy, elitism, and class (BTAS being the prime example), while Joker takes the craftiness, disruptiveness, theatricality, and seeming insanity. Both are completely obsessive.

No, I disagree wholeheartedly. Nolan's joker was nothing like riddler. He was all about chaos and upsetting balance, whereas riddler is about proving he's the smartest and always trying to one up thetother person. I don't know if you've read the Joker graphic novel by Brian azzarello, but that's the similar joker to Nolan's joker. Great read.

To me, the pimp and fetish stuff does fit Joker. Joker is about the dark and twisted side of human nature, not just chaos. And as being a king, well there was Emperor Joker who had shaped reality into basically his own playground. That's what Leto's Joker was like in SS. Gotham was his playground and he just wanted to have fun with it.

I'm also not above making dad jokes. lol

I like Batman's world to be detective noir with a twist, and minimal goofage. That tone is what has always hooked my interest in the comics and movies. When it strays from that, I may be entertained, but I become less invested.

I enjoy them for what they are, although they aren't my preferences either.

Jack was my first Joker, so he left a big impression - that mirror scene, the bell tower scene, the dead flowers, and he's so damn quotable. Mark Hamill will always have a special place in my heart. :)

Mark's actually got progressively darker up through Batman Beyond: RotJ. I remember being haunted by his Joker as a kid after seeing Mask of the Phantasm, despite the cornball lines. It was a great balance. Striking and memorable. I've never seen a log of bologna without thinking of him since. lol

At the end, when he was on the ropes and stuck in his own trap, with his only options being death by explosion, or death by the Phantasm, he just starts laughing as the embers blow by in the fire. There's definitely a lick of TKJ in his version.

Side note: He threatens that if Batman doesn't stop trying to take him down, they'll both die, and Batman just says, "Whatever it takes." Chilling.

Cesar Romero's Joker is a bit of fun for me, but definitely not my ideal take. You have to come at Batman '66 with a different mindset to enjoy it, of course. I grew up with it too, via re-runs. :)

Wholeheartedly agree. This just isn´t Joker to me. He seems like some low-life thug who thinks he´s soooo crazy and edgy and that´s why he dresses up like this.

It´s also pretty obvious that in turning the realtionship between Joker and Harley from abusive to actually romantic they wanted to appeal to teenage girls who love "bad boys". It just threw me off that they actually were this crazy couple in the theatrical and the released extended cut.

Although I thought that the implication he wears the grill because Batman broke his teeth after he killed Robin was nice touch.

        1. marcelb Avatar
          marcelb

Wait, are you sure? He only swatted the gun out of her hands and told her to go away in the one extra scene with them. I wouldn´t call that abusive. But then again, the extended cut wasn´t really a true director´s cut, there is still a ton of scenes missing. It´s been quite a while since I watched it, maybe I´m remembering it wrong.

It's pretty obvious that WB were worried about showcasing such an abusive relationship, so that aspect of the movie was one of the first things to go.

It wasn't in the stupid gimmicky extended cut, but leaked behind the scenes footage showed the Joker smacking Harley during that scene and there are reports that he was the one who pushed Harley out of the helicopter.

          2. NinjaGamer13 Avatar

It’s there. It’s maybe not as explicit as you were wanting, perhaps, but I honestly see the message as being there. The Extended Cut is a definite improvement to the theatrical version.

          3. NinjaGamer13 Avatar
            NinjaGamer13replying to marcelb

When I saw it, I got the impression he was completely manipulating her and that there was zero of anything I would call “love.”
He brainwashes her at the Asylum to get her to help him break out, then gets revenge by electroshocking her, considers her an annoyance and wants nothing to do with her when she chases after him and only agrees to stop running from her because she proves she is psychotic and dangerous and loyal to him (something he could take further advantage of), demands her absolute obedience to him and was originally planning to leave her to die in the vat of chemicals he has her jump into before deciding to get her out out of what seems to be some form of demented relent, and when they get caught by Batman he escapes and leaves her to drown in the car alone. I wouldn’t exactly call that a healthy relationship. And in the scene with Monster T and throughout the movie when he’s trying to get her back, he uses her to toy with him and seems very possessive. Possessiveness is not the same as love. It’s another common trait of an abusive relationship; she’s his property and he wants her back. Doesn’t mean he’s gonna start treating her any better when he gets her. That’s I how saw it, at least.

Magnolia is the greatest film ever made. I watch it at least once a year. Excellent name, sir.

I do thoroughly enjoy the character representations and Universe building of SS. However, that script needed more work and Ayer would have been better off sticking to a more realistic storyline within his comfort zone.

  8. Drake Grayson Avatar
    Drake Grayson

I believe keeping Joker as the Wild Card would have worked fine if Ayer stayed within his comfort zone and made a grounded in reality covert op mission rag-tag team film. He should have had them do several small missions of a political nature with Joker throwing in a monkey wrench in the final mission. Having another end of the world scenario with floating garbage and Myan Gods battling each other was not necessary, redundant, added confusion to why the heroes of DCEU didn’t help, added extra cgi to the budget and really wasn’t Ayer’s forte anyway.

The intention was to highlight Will Smith by diminishing the other characters.

The interaction is almost all between Deadshot and the other characters.

The interaction between the other characters has been cut or shrunk to put Will Smith at the center of all relationships.
The relationship between June Moon and Rick Flagg that was one of the most important relationships in the film and central to the climax was cut precisely to not steal the limelight of the relationship between Will Smith's Deadshot and Rick Flagg.

All the dynamics between the other characters were cut to highlight Deadshot. That includes one of the most famous and beloved couples - Harley and Joker.

It's a shame we will never see the movie that David Ayer did, but there were a lot of contradictory interests in this movie, such as the fact that there is a supreme need to highlight Will Smith who is the main star of the franchise. There is also the need to make a clean and family-friendly movie in the style of the main star image.

Everyone knows that Will Smith essentially makes movies for the family and even rejected Django's lead role because the film was against his moral values and dealt with revenge. That's what he said on the actors' roundtable. In previous interviews, he had said that he didn't want the part in Django because he felt that his character was not the real protagonist.

Will Smith demands that he has to be the protagonist and the highlight of any movie if he is not then he leaves.

What could the studio have done when confronted with such demands?

Will Smith is the Star of the franchise. They had no choice.

It's very symbolic of what's held the DCEU back, so far. Lack of confidence, withholding content, and not REALLY looking at the bigger picture. The theatrical ending works perfectly, IF it was setting up Joker and Harley to appear in the solo Batfleck movie next.

But in hindsight, the original ending accomplishes more; This gives Joker more screen time, Harley some character development, keeps her on the squad, and breaks her free from having to be attached to the Joker for her next appearance, while not having Joker achieve his goal and win(something Joker is never supposed to be allowed to actually do).😁 https://i.pinimg.com/origin...

Exactly! Everybody focused so much on the stupid tattoos. What, all of sudden Joker's body is supposed to be a temple, that shall never be defaced with ink?😕 Who cares?!😂 The accentuated wide smile with the red lipstick, is the most important part of Joker's look. I'm surprised David Ayer missed that. But he wasn't the first... https://uploads.disquscdn.c...

  15. Aheaney15 Avatar

That's kind of dumb, now that it's been revealed. I'm honestly glad they cut this scene. Having it cut did make his reveal to Harley that he was alive in the end fit the character better. Also, if she was choosing the Squad over him, why would Joker rescue her in the end? Plus, this scene sounds way too "heroic" for Harley to do that, given that she's supposed to be a villain (or so the movie says...).

However, I'm honestly surprised that they cut arguably two of his only quotable lines from scenes that were already in the movie. The lines being "I can't wait to show you my toys" from most of the trailers and a line from some BTS footage of the bomb factory scene, "some people just don't know when to die." Say what you will about Jared Leto's Joker (I myself hated him and thought he was one of the worst characters in the movie, along with Enchantress/Incubus, as well as Killer Croc and Katana), but those two lines DID fit the character of the Joker. I could easily see any good incarnation of the Joker saying those two lines, especially the second one. WHY WERE THEY CUT? They aren't even in the extended cut!

    1. SJ1986 Avatar
      SJ1986

He obviously wouldn't have rescued her in the end. That was the story change.

      1. Aheaney15 Avatar

No, that was the original intent. There are shots of it in the teaser trailer that came pre-reshoots.

    2. Wazzapova Avatar
      Wazzapova

Also wasn’t Harley saying “I hope you got insurance.” to the Joker while in his shiny purple car, also cut from the final movie? I remember that line in the trailer and it wasn’t in the film! Also what about the behind the scenes footage early in the filming where the Joker slaps Harley? That was cut too. P.S. I didn’t see Extended cut.

      1. Aheaney15 Avatar
        Aheaney15

The extended cut adds barely anything except a couple half-decent interaction scenes with the team, a super-quick Croc backstory with it (where they confirm that he is a cannibal), as well as one extended Joker scene (a couple extra lines in Arkham) and an entirely new Joker scene.

And let me tell you, the new Joker scene, which is the highway scene where he slaps Harley EXCEPT they cut the slapping part out (another thing that pissed me off), has arguably Jared Leto's worst like delivery ever. I swear, there is a point where he says "friend" but it sounds more like "FRED."

Also the "hope you got insurance line was cut too, but that wasn't too significant. It was in the novelization, along with a line from Batman: "Joker took something important from me. It's my turn." Not sure if that line was ever filmed, but it was in the novelization.

    3. NinjaGamer13 Avatar
      NinjaGamer13

How would the “toys” line fit? That was in the scene where he’s meeting the prison guard to get him to deliver a phone to Harley for him. What I think happened was they played around with a bunch of different, possibly ad-libbed lines, and what we ended up getting was the one that stuck and the only thing that really worked with the story. But the trailer people used whatever.

      1. Aheaney15 Avatar
        Aheaney15

That's a good point, actually. Maybe it was an alternative take. We'll probably never know. But my complaint is really that that toys line was one of his only memorable lines.

    4. Aheaney15 Avatar
      Aheaney15

Nah I didn't hate Katana, I just thought she was used so little (she did nothing outside of the action scenes, and didn't really shine in them either) that she just shouldn't have been in the movie at all. Also, her file on the ARGUS website actually gives her a fairly interesting backstory, but it's not in the movie at all.

And what happened to her in the end? Did she go back to Japan?

    5. NinjaGamer13 Avatar
      NinjaGamer13

Katana needed to be out of the movie entirely. She had no place being there; there was already too much going on, and she was pretty irrelevant and out-of-nowhere to the plot.

      1. Rust Avatar
        Rust

Yeah... Man, if they had just developed her a little more, I would happily agree less. The movie could've stood another 20 minutes or so to develop attachments to all of the characters.

Katana has a lot of potential, so I hope this isn't the last we see of her. Great choice of actress, and great costume too.

No he definitely wasn't, not in a million years. I should have given more context.

Enchantress and Incubus are far and away the worst characters in the movie. Leto's Joker I was extremely disappointed in, but yeah I agree he's nowhere near as painful to watch as Enchantress.

      For the grill:

"Joker killed Robin and Batman basically smashes his teeth out and locks him up in Arkham Asylum. It’s in the asylum where Joker would have done the ‘damaged’ tattoo as a message to Batman saying, 'You’ve damaged me. I was so beautiful before and now you’ve destroyed my face.' That’s where the grill comes from."

I like the idea, but it’s hard to substantiate in the canon. Joker already has the tattoo and grills when he meets Harley Quinn, and in Waller’s file on her - as we see as floating text during her intro-flashback - she is said to be an accomplice in the murder of Robin.

        1. Kouglof Avatar

I really believe, though the WB execs did seem to meddle, the fault with this movie is mostly still Ayer’s. He stood by the theatrical version as his movie when it was released, and most of the deleted scenes we have seen glimpses of - at least of the Joker - are tiny little add-ons to scenes we already have and do not indicate that much greater of a presence in the film. I don’t think it would’ve made much of a difference. Like Ayer said, there’s no secret cut of Suicide Squad out there with a ton of Joker footage. He was always gonna be underused. And thus what is probably the movie’s biggest problem, Enchantress, was always gonna be there. This isn’t like the Snyder Cut, which seems to be more significant and potentially game-changing.

Suicide Squad had many, many problems. And no Joker performance will ever be as good as Heath Ledger’s, most likely. But, honestly, considering his tiny screen time and the terrible direction he was working under, I don’t think it’s fair to say that - besides those annoying tattoos and grill - the Joker was one of those problems. I think Jared Leto nailed the crazy, creepy vibe of the character, and the Extended Cut returned the abusive, manipulative aspect of his relationship with Harley, as well as giving him this line - “I’m an idea, a state of mind. I execute my plan according to my will...” - which, to me, seems to mean that this really is the elemental force of chaos type of Joker that we all want, similar to Ledger’s, and not simply a gimmicky gangster.

    1. Aheaney15 Avatar
      Aheaney15

I agree with that. My biggest non-Enchantress, non-story problems, and non-character problems do come from the studio meddling though. The inconsistent tone, the random soundtrack, the bizarre story structure, the chaotic editing, and the cringey humor were all caused at least partially by the studio meddling.

I didn't like Jared Leto's Joker at all (on a side note, you make a good point regarding the "state of mind" line), but too be fair he was criminally underserved and botched by bad directing and editing, as well as a terrible design that I questioned since the release of the first image.

      1. NinjaGamer13 Avatar
        NinjaGamer13

That’s probably fair. Though I will admit I love those songs too much to diss the soundtrack :P

Very true. I totally believe that Jared Leto in - say - a solo Batman movie directed Matt Reeves perhaps, would be fully capable of giving a widely accepted performance.

I’d be careful with that. Great movies can be made that are PG-13, and a great, creative director should be able make it edgy enough without needing to necessarily cross that boundary. David Ayer’s Bright was rated R, and we saw how that turned out - it’s still cheesy and all that, just with a bunch of stupidly gratuitous tidbits dumped in, lol
