'Justice League' costume designer reveals why Superman's black suit was scrapped

on 'Justice League' costume designer reveals why Superman's black suit was scrapped

If you've seen the deleted Superman scenes from the Justice League Blu-ray, you know that his black suit was teased in the background. Now according to a new interview with costume designer Michael Wilkinson we know that director Zack Snyder wanted Superman to wear the costume in the movie, and why those plans were scrapped.

"The black suit is something that has fascinated us as filmmakers from the get-go," Wilkinson told Digital Spy. "We saw a glimpse of it in the nightmare sequence from Man of Steel when Superman was wading through skulls, and also in the deleted scene from Justice League where you do see Clark walking through the spaceship and it's teased in the background."

"When we were prepping Justice League, at first it seemed that it might be a logical choice for the look of Superman when he's resurrected. Zack is extremely respectful and passionate about the depiction of Superman in comic books and graphic novels, and traditionally when he is resurrected, he is in the black suit.

"But as the tone of the film developed and we were in pre-production, the filmmakers felt that the classic red and blue suit seemed more appropriate to our story and our script. It seemed that a more positive, upbeat image of Superman was what was needed – the idea of hope and that the world could in fact be saved was important, so that's the direction that we went."

Translation? After the backlash to Batman v Superman everyone at Warner Bros. freaked out. We know that the Justice League script was tweaked before they started production, and it sounds to me like Superman's black suit was one of the casualties.

What do you make of Wilkinson's comments about Superman's black suit in Justice League? Do you think they made the right call or would you have liked to see Superman in it? Let me know in the comments below.

He wouldn't use the black suit all the time. In the final of the movie he could got the original one to show that idea of hope. What is wrogn with Warner???? I can't. It should be epic with or without the BvS backlash.

I don't know if this was mentioned already but this is what they should have done: superman gets resurrected appearing with the beard, long hair, and with the black suit. It would logically make sense since the suit hasn't been exposed to the sun (i.e. Coffin) and before he joins the fight against steppenwolf you would see superman fly up to the sun and see his suit absorbing the Suns energy giving the suit its traditional vibrant colors, then he sonic booms to where the team is at.

It should of been in the film. I can’t stand how many opportunities were missed with JL. So many mistakes, it’s awful. A story can still portray hope and have a darker tone at times.

Why is it so scary a thought to have Superman grow and develop into a hero who provides hope. Justice League was a failure. I blame WB and Whedon. Perhaps Snyder’s take wouldn’t of succeeded either but I wish as a fan of DC we could of seen Snyder’s true vision for Superman fulfilled.

The black suit only makes sense in the context of Superman's resurrection in the comics. It was designed to help channel more solar energy into his cells to revive him. In the context of his resurrection in Justice League, it would've been strange.

I had a feeling this was the case. Honestly don’t mind, though. There was no real good reason for Superman to be wearing black in this story anyway, and as someone who wanted his resurrection to symbolize the rebirth of hope in the world, it does make sense for him to be in his classic suit instead.

You know the answer to that. It is in the writing. Snyder and Goyer could have written a better script to include a way to send him back into the phantom zone without killing him.

Plus, what if DC wanted to use Zod again in another film? NOPE. He is dead. The only way Snyder believes he can get a character motivated to change, is to use death as a cheap plot device; Zod, his dad, Jimmy Olsen.

I will say it again, a shit slinging rhesus monkey could have written a better script.

"a way to send him back into the phantom zone without killing him"

What Superman would do if he had not the phantom zone option? (he already used this option with the other Kryptonians). Why Superman could not be in a situation where he has to make a choice between killing a mad being or letting this mad being kill more people?

In Batman TAS, mobs always fall on a tree or in the river when Batman pushes them from a ballon... how accurate it is?

"Plus, what if DC wanted to use Zod again in another film? NOPE. He is dead."

Zod is for me the best villain among the DCEU/MCU because he's not a villain who needs to be a villain: he has a real purpose and the best motivations ever. But it doesn't mean Zod have to come back, reclycling is not always a good idea, it's the directors/writers duty to create new villains as good or better than previous movies. Even Marvel kill his good enemies (Killmonger for example, maybe the best villain from the MCU until now).

"The only way Snyder believes he can get a character motivated to change,
is to kill as a cheap plot device; Zod, his dad, Jimmy Olsen. "

I'm sorry but we see much more Pa and Ma Kent in the Snyder universe than in previous movies from the Christopher Reeve era (even if you count the 188 min extended cut of Superman 1978 release in 2017). Jimmy Olsen dies in BvS, but his depiction in BvS Ultimate Cut was honorable, we already saw him in previous movies, and you have always ton of characters from the comics.

"What Superman would do if he had not the phantom zone option?"

That is answering a question, with a question. So basically you don't have an answer.

"In Batman TAS, mobs always fall on a tree or in the river when Batman pushes them from a ballon... how accurate it is?"

I don't even know what your trying to say here....next.

"Zod is for me the best villain among the DCEU/MCU because he's not a villain who need to be a villain: he has a real purpose and the best motivations ever."

Most villains have a purpose and motivation, albeit most slightly skewed.

“But it doesn't mean Zod have to come back, reclycling is not always a good idea, it's the directors/writers duty to create new villains as good or better than previous movies. "

Recycling criminals/villains is exactly what this universe is all about. Have you read a comic? No one in the DCEU is creating new villains. All of them are coming from the comics, thus far.

"I'm sorry but we see much more Pa and Ma Kent in the Snyder universe than in previous movies from the Christopher Reeve era..."

What does that have to do with killing off characters for nonsensical reasons? We see more of Pa in MoS so therefore he must die? Doesn't make sense.

I am not answering a question with a question, it's a rhetorical question, a sentence which contains the response. Superman is in a situation where he has no other options, he has to kill otherwise he is not Superman.

About Batman TAS and the mobs who always fall on a tree or in a river, I just show you that Paul Dini/Bruce Timm put Batman in impossible situations where the mobs never die.

What I really get a kick out of is how Superman has killed and has been in the situation where he is forced to kill other times in the comics, and that’s fine, but when Snyder does it in order to originate his NO-KILL RULE it’s bad somehow LOL
Or what else is really hilarious is how Batman’s killing at the end of Batman Begins is totally acceptable, but Superman’s doing the same for an even better reason is not, even though both have no-kill policies.
And the BEST joke there is is how much you Snyder hate trolls mindlessly worship the Reeve movies and their stupidly cheesy as all get out depiction of Superman, which, in the second movie, shows Superman crushing a depowered Zod’s hand before throwing him into an icy pit to his death - all with a literal smirk on his face - and that’s great, but when a realistic Superman who is taken seriously as a character is forced to kill the exact same character, and actually shows great agony in having to afterward because he’s not a freaking sociopath, you guys are up in arms.
You people are SO OBVIOUS in your hate bias against Snyder that it’s LAUGHABLE.

We have all been over this conversation with you MANY times. When you write character for the first time on screen, and then make that character out to be the Man of Mope...and a KILLER, that is what resonates with the viewer.

The few times in the comics it has happened, I think only once in an Elseworld setting (if you read comics you would know) it was done with years of (1938) of comic lore around that character. In that lore...we know Superman does not kill. There is a foundation in the comics.

Snyder doesn't give us that foundation. He doesn't even let Superman save people, including his own father for more than half the movie. It is horrific writing...and you Snyder bots would see it if you didn't have your head stuck up his arse.

          2. NinjaGamer13 Avatar

Good thing he wasn’t the Man of Mope. That explains why most everybody likes Man of Steel except for the whiny minority of fanboys on the internet.
As for your dramatic “KILLER,” once again forgetting Batman Begins, eh?

Everyone knows who Superman is and what he’s about. That foundational lore permeates not just the comics but all of popular culture. So this point is moot. Or do you think everyone who picks up a comic reads all of the previous ones released since 1938 beforehand?

Again, that foundation COMES FROM KILLING ZOD. In the DCEU, it is BECAUSE he kills Zod that he never wants to kill again. Well, that and how he was raised, of course. You cannot just ignore certain things and not others to fit your preconceived bias, lol, is this seriously a joke?

Oh, Superman doesn’t save people in MoS? Really? Wow, I’m not sure what I watched then, how embarrassing, ‘cause I’m pretty sure in whatever movie it was that I watched he saves more than Christopher Reeve ever did...

I probably have replied to you with this before, but Superman actually gets depressed, mopey, and even enraged in Reeve's films. He quits being Superman (gives up his powers) during a spell of inner turmoil and self-doubt.

He's also typically very serious when dealing with serious situations. Similarly, Henry's Superman smiles when a smile is called for - which was quite a few touching or charming moments.

I dunno how this gets glossed over in peoples' memories. It's so shallow and petty to over-generalize either them into a convenient little hate folder. Both are fantastic Superman performances for their times.

Did Snyder end his MoS movie with a hopeful Superman like Donner did with Reeve's Superman? Nope! The last scene is Superman acting like a petulant child destroying a gov't drone..."Don't you spy on me!"

Snyder couldn't even leave the audiences with a smiling Superman flying off, which is why Reeve's Superman was far superior in many ways.

          6. Rust Avatar
            Rustreplying to kan

I thought the "Welcome to the Planet" scene was hopeful and sweet, and you have him happy to have started to find his place in the world he saved, his mom is safe and sound, etc.

I felt hopeful about all that.

The drone scene was interesting from the standpoint that he would have to cover his corners to make sure he isn't being watched in the real world, but I also thought it was funny.

Snyder did intend to leave the audience with the classic Superman flying away once the character's introductory arc was complete, and he was the one who filmed the scene in Justice League where he classically opens his shirt and takes off with the "up in the sky" quote. :)

Still, I don't think every Superman movie has to end the same way, or with the same tone, to be a valid interpretation of the character.

You are giving your opinions again, "I think, I felt.." That is fine, but it doesn't make it true. "Snyder did intent....", conjecture. His JL was deemed "unwatchable" so I have my doubts.

Snyder didn't have to give us the same scene, but he could have left us with a better Superman than the actions of a petulant man-child.

          8. Rust Avatar
            Rustreplying to kan

I mean, calling him a petulant man-child is also an opinion. :P Of course we're discussing opinions here.

I offered a different reception of that scene, so it isn't objectively a negative moment if we can both have different takeaways depending on how we see it.

Still, isn't the true final scene, "Welcome to the Planet", positive and hopeful? The film ends with Clark giving a pure smile to Lois (who's just flashed him a cheeky, clever wink of a line), and he seems to be excited about where his life is going to go after coming out and deciding to try to be a hero. It's a cumulative tie-up moment, built up from the themes and progression of the rest of the story.

So he joins the Planet, smiles brightly, the music rises to an energetic, motivated pace, and cue the title, followed by credits.

I walked away from that ending feeling positive. Is my having that impression illegitimate because you didn't like him blowing up the drone? Or, I guess, do you not value the scene because he's not dressed up in the costume for it?

Giving Superman an easy way out of a tough decision is weaker, less interesting writing, in my opinion.

What's the point of a hero story if we're too afraid to confront him with a meaningful challenge that has ramifications?

Superman is an extension of the tales of Hercules, and has always been that same sort of 'flawed hero' archetype. He performs miracles, but things also go tragically for him at times. There's nothing wrong with that.

In the beginning of the movie, during the trial, Zod said to the elders, "you would not kill us, you would not sully your hands, but will condemn us to a black hole for an eternity."

So if MoS Supes would've done what you suggested, he would be just as hypocritical as the Kryptonian elders. Double standards n shit. Killing Zod was his hardest choice, hence the "no shawarma scene" afterwards was replaced by his remorseful cry/shout/yell/whateveryoucallit.

Nolan, Snyder's mentor, told him it was a wrong to have Superman kill, but Snyder did it anyway. It was a shitty plot device to motivate a character to change, when you could have easily achieved the same results without killing. Snyder is not that intellectually deep so he went for the easy way out.

He should have been buried in his suit, which would morph from color to color, depending on consistency of solar intake, in which case would have been black for a short time due too solar deficiency.

      attentionisattention

That would be my wish. The suit could've used its last bit of juice to regen the hole and turned black as a result. Clark's casket should've been the empty one, would've been easier explaining him being alive as well.

I agree with WB on this one. Comics are afforded the luxury of time so they can do all sorts of things. With movies they’ve only got 2 hours of footage every so many years. Plus, they weren’t even gonna do the black suit justice from the looks of it. Superman is supposed to have long hair and there isn’t supposed to be a cape to go with it. With the backlash to darkman vs batman I think it was a better idea to just put him in the Red/blue costume and show him happy to be alive again.

The studios let Snyder have creative freedom with MoS, that was all on him to give us something epic. Instead he turned in a piece of divisive shit that didn't resonate with fans and movie-goers. After that, WB was on his ass because they lost faith, rightfully so. All that is on Snyder.

It was not a critical or audience loved success. Compare it to Nolan's work which was pretty much loved by both. It is a divisive movie that for every person that loved it, there is one that hated it.

Figured as much. Twas a bummer that the Death/Return story wasn't adapted more faithfully as the black suit didn't represent a "darker" Superman so much as it was a practical suit (solar suit) for a weaker Superman. It also was a perfect juxtaposition to the four other Supermen as all of them supposedly aimed to make their appearance more like the real Superman while the actual genuine article wore what was needed and didn't care.

Alas, of course WB freaked out and course corrected through overcompensation as they always do. They never learn, do they?

Tim Burton's Batman was too "dark," so we get Batman Forever and Batman & Robin as a response.

Superman Returns was criticized for being too reminiscent of the Reeve films and had literally no fight scenes, so WB got Snyder to go balls-to-the-walls action galore and reboot with a darker tone. When the destruction was criticized, WB made sure all BvS fight scenes contained no civilians and hammered into people's heads how the areas were abandoned.
And then when BvS was beaten to a pulp by criticism for being too dark, here comes the light and fluffy Justice League to make things Marv... I mean, right.... And now that they failed at doing even that, one wonders just what kind of overcompensation WB will think of next.
