"Suicide Squad: Hell to Pay" gets sequel comic ahead of video release

Suicide Squad: Hell to Pay, the latest in Warner Bros. Home Entertainments long-running slate of original DC Comics films, will hit digital release next Tuesday, March 27. Starring Vanessa Williams as Amanda Waller, Christian Slater as Deadshot, and Tara Strong as Harley Quinn, the film will see Task Force X embark on another mission where the risks no doubt far outweigh the rewards. It's... just kind of what they do.

And also Bronze Tiger is there. Aww yeah.

Before it's even had a public release, though, the movie already has a sequel by way of a new digital-first comic series. That's pretty bold, to say the least, but with Batman '66 mastermind Jeff Parker writing a story where the Spectre comes a-knocking for Amanda Waller's soul? You certainly have my attention.

Today, DC kicks off a brand-new Digital First series with SUICIDE SQUAD: HELL TO PAY, a sequel story to the upcoming animated film from Warner Bros. Home Entertainment. The comic series from writer Jeff Parker (BATMAN ’66) will follow Amanda Waller as she looks for an escape—from death. The first chapter is available now.
“Our story picks up immediately after the Hell to Pay animated film, and Waller is still on a personal mission to save her soul—and she’s willing to put the Suicide Squad through hell to do it,” says Parker. “This time, the Squad goes way out of their element and around the world to face supernatural and ancient forces—and yes, Harley is in there too!”
Amanda Waller’s Task Force X has completed another mission—and in her opinion, the prize was worth the price they paid. But with the Spectre closing in to take Waller’s soul, she must find a new means of escaping death. Now looking to Jason Blood as a possible ally, Waller may face a revolt from her own team for this latest addition to the Squad. Is membership in the Suicide Squad really better than imprisonment at Belle Reve?
The weekly series will run for 12 chapters, written by Jeff Parker, beginning with illustrations from Matthew Dow Smith, with future chapters from artists Agustin Padilla, Stefano Raffaele and Cat Staggs.

Also this might be a lot of fun. Because it's not in the DCU the writer won't have to worry too much about killing off characters, so they all have some sort of expend-ability. It would also be cool to see a Suicide Squad series on the Black Label they're doing for the same reason.

  I disagree. To me, SS was never about guessing who would die and who would not -- it was more about the fun, strained, awkward relationships between villains with different colorful personalities forced to work with each other. Thing is, even in the original SS by Ostrander, you knew there were certain members who would not die because they were just to good to get rid off.

    I agree with you on the relationships - it's one of my favourite things about the current series and why I love it so much - but as an elseworld you're opening it up to a wider range of creative possibilities that you can't explore so much in the canon book. Deadshot, Quinn and Boomerang are all going to be fine in both continuities though.

Um why is Bane in the comic? He's not in the animated verse is he? I hope they dont screw him here ahead of a potential debut.

  LOL I hope not, appears that Bane is a member of the Squad. If they kill him and the animators want to use him then you can bet this series will be utterly disregarded.

There really isn't a DC animated universe (except the movies JL War, JL Throne of Atlantis, JL vs Teen Titans,JL Dark, Teen Titans the Judas Contract, Son of Batman, Batman vs Robin, and Batman Bad Blood which are all connected. For all we know this isn't connected to any prior animated movie.

  There is, and it's exactly the animated movie universe, which this one is a part of. I believe they mentioned this is the first appearance of the Suicide Squad of this universe, since Assault on Arkham was part of the Arkhamverse.

But this is not even accurate to the movie -- in the movie, you can clearly tell that Harley does not have bleached skin. Yet here she does? What the hell? Is quality control that far down the drain?
