Ava DuVernay confirms 'New Gods' with an emoji and tribute to creator Jack Kirby

Yesterday news broke that A Wrinkle In Time director Ava DuVernay would be directing New Gods for Warner Bros. and DC, and she's confirmed the news herself with a simple emoji and tribute to New Gods creator Jack Kirby.

DuVernay shared the news from Deadline with her Instagram followers and captioned it with a simple fist bump emoji. On Twitter, DuVernay paid tribute to New Gods creator Jack Kirby by sharing one of his famous quotes, "Our dreams make us large." and then thanking him. Check out her social media posts below.

There have been conflicting reports as to whether or not New Gods will be part of the DCEU. Variety said it will be, but Deadline reported that there's no connection. We'll have to wait for more confirmation, but one things for sure -- Ava DuVernay is directing New Gods.

    Darkseid is first and foremost the big bad of Superman and the JL. Having him cameo in their movie, then, is perfect.

      That right there proves you don't know Darkseid. He's not a big bad of Superman or even the JL, he's a Multiverse threat and is just as much a villain to the JL as the Anti-Monitor is. He's faced Superman plenty of times sure but he's not one of Supes villains like Lex or Doomsday are, yeah he's kinda a JL big bad but that's no different in saying Lex, Sinestro or Deathstroke are JL villains.
      As for having him cameo in a JL movie sure i would have liked that but i would happily have him established in a New Gods film first especially when a New Gods film can give some depth to Darkseid beyond just making him evil and left at that.

      Completely agree Hunter, DC need to stop this half baked copy/catchup attitude they have in terms of competing with Marvel. They need to come up with a completely different way of approaching their universe. Having Darkseid ominously pop up at the end of Justice league would have been shockingly uncreative (and borderline plagiarism), it would have been totally ridiculed by everyone as a desperate copy of Marvel (which JL basically ended up being anyway). This New Gods film is unlike anything that Marvel have explored and it gives me hope that DC are fundamentally changing their approach to this universe.

      You do not understand Schuyler. If Darkseid had appeared at the end of JL, it would have been the exact same set up as Thanos in Avengers. (The X-men post credit of Apocalypse was also a lazy rip off) You can argue that 'technically' it's not plagiarism, but the general audience would have just seen this as an underwhelming repeat non-the-less, and would have reacted promptly, they don't care about your autistic fanboy ramblings. DC need to change the whole fucking paradigm, people really want to see more of the outlandish and fantastical side of comic adaptions, cameos that tease the best part will no longer cut it. You've only exposed that fact that you, like WB studio execs, suffer with a severe lack of imagination...

      Except we don't have a multiverse on our hands. The largest representation of the DC Universe in film is the League itself, and thus he needs to be the ultimate big bad for them. And I say Superman because he is popularly seen as a Superman villain for many, largely because of the animated series, I'm sure. The movies cannot go into every nitty gritty minor detail of the universe; they need to be broad and representational.

      I said Multiverse threat because you reduced him to a Superman big bad when he isn't and never was, it was a Superman cartoon what had him as a Superman big bad but in the comics he's really not and hardly appears in Superman comics or even JL comics beyond big event arcs what usually involves more then just the JL.
      End of the day though we aren't going to see Darkseid in a JL film because the chances of a JL happening again are slim, a epic New Gods film would be a much better way to have Darkseid because they can explore him better then a JL film what will just reduce him to the big bad of the film.

      Darkseid is a multiversal threat, to all of the the lanterns, to the justice leagueS (of all earth's), the mythological gods (Zeus, etc), to all Earth's/universes. There is only one darkseid. There are 52 parallel earth's in DC's multiverse. But Darkseid and the new gods live outside of the known universe and using their boom tubes can choose which universe to go to and conquer.       So earth is the origination point/center of each universe. Outside of the known universe is the sphere of gods. No fast tracking, please! After seeing A Wrinkle in Time, Ava needs some generous time to direct this properly. I'm still not stoked about this directorial choice and wish I was. New Gods does need to happen though. Ahhh, I'm conflicted.

  I haven't seen Wrinkle in Time nor am I aware of any details regarding how it was made, but I have seen other DuVurnay movies and she is pretty damn talented. Her last major movie before Wrinkle, Selma, was basically rebuilt from the ground up by her and she totally knocked it out of the park. That movie was in development hell before she came in, and she still had to deal with issues regarding the rights to speechs, etc.

BvS caused that lackluster opening, even Wonder Woman didn't help with it what goes to show how much people were put off by Affleck's Batman who was all over the JL marketing.

      We got really lucky with the perfect conditions that led to BP and GotG being so successful. Part of that was simply a rapport of good faith and high energy that Marvel established with audiences, which had people interested in anything they put out.
      As much as I want New Gods to happen, it isn't guaranteed to catch with audiences like that. I'm hopeful it does, but it still feels like a gamble. Even Aquaman's success feels kinda uncertain to me.

      and everyone else like everyone is with Thanos in Infinity War. Even in JL comics they tend to have other people who aren't JL, take The Darkseid War you had Mister Miracle with Big Barda, Steve Trevor, Metron, Grail and her Mum, Lex, Shazam and the fucking Anti Monitor.

      I agree with you, but I also think that it makes sense for them to suggest that, from a marketing perspective, it would be good to generate interest via JL/Superman first.
      That worked for a lot of people with the comics and cartoons anyway (me included). I got into all this stuff because of Superman TAS.
      Saying that though, obviously it also could work as it's own thing - and given DC Films' current public footing, I think that may actually be smarter right now.
      Hell, maybe we'll even find ourselves in a situation where New Gods does so well as it's own thing that having characters from it appear in JL character movies actually helps lift those movies out of the "Ew, DCEU" stink and gets people hyped when they may not have been as much.
      Could you imagine that? "Superman sucks anymore, but, hey, that evil mother****** from New Gods is in the new Superman movie! That sounds epic! Maybe I'll watch this Superman movie after all because NG was so good."
      What a world that would be... yet, I can see it. :P

      It's not like Disney just forced it over to her and forced her to make it shitty. She pushed for it, cast it with the actors she wanted to cast it, and filmed the way she wanted to film it. From what I understand, it's based on a decently famous kids novel, and the novel has generally good reviews. So most likely she just screwed up the source material because she is incompetent with a big budget film.

I think that we have been getting references to the New Gods since BvS, that Warner knew that at some point they were going to make his film, indeed, it was rumored for a long time its adaptation, so it would not make sense that 'New Gods' do not be part of the DCEU.

Not only that this movie is being made, but that the one making it is the director who's just served Disney a flop, which felt like MI before that clusterfuck Wrinkle in Anus came out.     People need to stop using the lightning in the bottle happy accidents like Ledger, Gadot and Russos to justify hiring failed actors, writers and directors. Those were special exactly because they overcame the paradigm. But on average, a C level director will keep on delivering C level movies. Stop hoping for miracles and be smart about who you hire.

      I think they thought you didn't know about the story since you proposed a JL tie in and it wasn't needed. I just think it's a super weird movie to make. Feels like their attemot to have their own Guardians of the Galaxy or something...
      There's Plasticman, Blue Beetle, Martian Manhunter, Hawkman/Hawkgirl, Birds of Prey (which I think was an amazing idea when they "announced" it)...
      It's just a random fucking movie at this point imo.

      I don't think so. Takes place in gotham, with known characters who can tie in to the extended universe, you tackle the female heroes which DC actually is able to do right... I don't see why it'd be random.

    Yes, but aquaman got a lot of pressure on it, it has to be a hit critically and financially to rebuild the hype, i trust james wan though. WW2 is the one im the least excited about, the first one was good but i feel like ares couldve been better. Shazam looks pretty good, im pretty sure it'll be good. I agree on the batman, i think its not happening before 2020 since flashpoint must come out first to do a quick reboot. I wish we had news about mos 2.

      The idea that blacks in the US today are somehow systematically targeted, or killed by cops at a higher rate than whites, does not stand up to the most basic of scrutiny. It's a false narrative of which there's no evidence.
      In factual fact, white people are actually more likely to be shot and killed by cops than blacks. But this is never brought up. Instead, she pushes this victim narrative which just isn't true and even worse, ignores the real problem, such as single motherhood. Statistically, this is without a doubt, the biggest factor as to why many blacks in the US are struggling. Something she gladly ignores so she can keep on blaming the "white system", despite the irrefutable fact (according to liberal research, believe it or not) that whatever the system may or may not do to help or harm black individuals, pails in comparison to what individuals do with their lives. It's another way of saying that people are responsible for their own lives and they shape their future. But that doesn't go well with her obsession of supposed black oppression, which doesn't exist (anymore).
      Ask yourself this... The gender gap in sentencing for example, is more than 6 times larger than the race gap. Have you ever heard "male lives matter"? Have you ever heard the progressive media report this? Has anyone in the liberal elite ever bothered to point out this fact? Of course not, because men are seen as "privileged" and after all, they commit vastly more crime than women, so "it's their own fault". But when blacks are sentenced to 5-10% longer sentences (depending on the region, and the source. And also, when taking into account other factors, such as a history of criminal violence, etc, then some could argue the race gap almost completely disappears, statistically speaking. In any case, the race gap is actually quite small), even though blacks commit an OBSCENE amount... in fact a disproportionate amount of crime per capita, then this is a "massive problem" and "proof of a racist epidemic".
      But again... These criminals being male is actually the biggest prejudice they'll ever face, but that's never brought up, because no one cares.
      My point is, I can't stand people who lie about these things (be it, by omission). Because they're not interested in the truth or even, actual black lives. They only want to push their precious political agenda, and they put this above the very people they claim to defend. This disgusts me.
      For example, many of these progressive airheads claim to speak on behalf of "black lives", with their BLM rhetoric. They all just want "black people not to be killed" and all that stuff. Meanwhile back in reality, black people ARE NOT shot and killed by cops at a higher rate than whites. Meaning, the problem doesn't exist.
      So it would be logical for these BLM protesters to have a sense of relief, right? After all, we're telling them that fortunately, cops actually aren't racist and that blacks aren't unfairly targeted. I would assume these people to be happy after hearing such news. Because, isn't that the end goal? For black lives to be valued the same?
      But noooooope. Say these things, and they all get fucking triggered. They get angry. They accuse you of racism and bigotry. They HATE you for stating the truth. Because, none of these pretentious hypocrites actually care about people. Again, they care ONLY about their stupid, already disproved narrative, which they deem more important than human life.
      I have absolutely ZERO respect for these people.

The only thing positive about it is that critics somehow had a few good things to say about her last 'movie'. Its the worst of the year by far. Shockingly bad.
This will mean that if New Gods is decent to good, then critics will give Duvernay high praise. If its great (Longshot), then critics will suffer brain damage from writing mostly positive things about a DC film.

I think the main problem is that there are HUGE leaks over at WB and DC and even if they just so much as think of a movie concept it's been immediately broadcasted as a coming movie. Now, this movie might happen, only time will tell, but it sure as hell wouldn't be announced this early! The smart move is to focus on the solo films (with hopefully the additions of Batman and MoS2) and take it from there.

Shazam I kinda get, its a very different take on the Superhero archetype. Building a universe when you haven't even made a Batman film and when you've just realised a shitty JL movie that didn't even break even to then make New Gods is just mind blowing.

At this point WB should just confirm they're not doing shared universe anymore actually have clarity on what this whole DCfilms thing is now.
It's stuff like this thats making DCfilms fail. In all honesty I know Wan has never made a bad film and the fact he managed to get FF out've the door after Walker's passing is still a human feat but Im gonna say to everyone here now. Aquaman isn't going to make money. Why? Because no one saw JL and if they did they sure as hell didn't build the hype like Marvel did with Panther in Civil War.

They already made like 15 Batman and Superman movies. I like that they are doing Aquaman, Shazam, WW, Flash, and GL first. Even tho Batman is clearly on the way and MOS is probably gonna be announced soon. As for Marvel they didn’t really build the hype for Black Panther in the movie. He didn’t steal the show. Aquaman did look badass in JL tho. Minus the final fight scenes. His concept for a comic book adaptation movie is unique and can sell big time, we haven’t seen a comic book hero underwater yet. And the fact it’s in Atlantis, is a big awesome opportunit. To see the underwater world on the big screen. It’s unique.
