'Nightwing' is at least 5 years away as director moves on to new project

When Nightwing director Chris McKay said it was going to be a long process and that they were taking their time, he wasn't kidding!

This past week Variety reported that McKay is in talks with Paramount Pictures to direct their Dungeons & Dragons movie, which is set to be released in July 2021. That means a Nightwing movie directed by McKay isn't coming for at least the next 5 years.

Assuming McKay jumped into Nightwing right after Dungeons & Dragons, the movie could be out by 2023 but even that seems unlikely. He'd probably want a break, just like The Batman director Matt Reeves wanted a break after directing War for the Planet of the Apes.

One things for sure, McKay won't drop out of the project like Joss Whedon just did with Batgirl. He told a fan this past week that Warner Bros. would have to fire him to get him off of Nightwing.

While Nightwing is a long ways off, Warner Bros. will be cranking out plenty of DC Comics movies over the next few years. Shazam, Wonder Woman 2, and Suicide Squad 2 will go into production this year, and The Batman, Flashpoint, and Batgirl are reportedly high on WB's priority list as well.

        Which is still bad when youre making a cinematic universe. We dont know when movies will come out, we have no news about important movies other then directors leaving projects. While the dceu if fumbling, marvel is releasing 3 movies a year and keeps their fans informed.

        Bucky and War Machine are the only somewhat mainstream big ones that you'd think might be a little bit profitable, and they both already have their origin stories covered, and regularly make appearances.
        DC making sidekick films makes a little more sense in full context.

        The thing is (and I mean this with no offense) that no one cares about either of those. Marvel has it's only big hitting secondary characters already well-covered in other films, so of course it doesn't have sidekick films.
        DC hasn't covered Nightwing, Batgirl, Red Hood, Supergirl, etc, and Harley Quinn and Joker have enormous popularity that can still be tapped.
        It just makes more sense for DC as they have a greater number of more popular secondaries - many of them already household names. Butts in seats.

        Eh, I don't know about that. Movies come and go. The vast majority of people who see the movies go once and that's it. They're not invested in the characters. Will people be talking about Deadpool or Black Panther or Dr. Strange in 20 years? No, I doubt it. Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman will still be iconic.
        DC is more relevant and more exposed with quality content in every other medium: comics, video games, TV, cartoons and on a global scale with instantly recognizable, iconic characters. It's really only been a few "bad" live-action feature films over the last 2-3 years that people highlight.
        People forget that Marvel went bankrupt 20 years ago. They were DEAD. 20 years later they have a successful movie franchise. These things can turn one way or the other.

        Those are gimmicks and won't be long-lasting. Characters with great stories are long lasting. What great stories have Deadpool and Black Panther been in? None. They have no great histories and no real prospects for great futures.

    I think there will be DC movies, but as far as a cohesive universe of films, nothing surprises me with WB. Movies go from being put on a slate to WB going radio silent about them, directors are constantly dropping out, actors getting recast. It's not an oiled machine over there and for the longest time I was one of the DCEU's biggest proponents.
    It's pretty obvious, though, that WB is completely unclear on how to proceed. They're now taking freakin' cold proposals over social media from writers to write DC movies. That's just beyond strange.
    WB is, frankly, not structured to produce a continuous slate of movies based on DC characters the same way Marvel Studios does with their movies. Feige is god. He is the singular authorial vision whose dictate cascades down through every film production. WB has explicitly stated that they want "artist driven" DC movies. So, you can have one or the other: a tightly connected cinematic universe or artist-driven movies. Not both.
    Will there be some loose connections between certain movies? Yes. Will there be big JL-level team-ups? Probably, but they won't flow from story to story the way Marvel's movies do. THAT'S NOT A BAD THING.
    WB makes great artist-driven movies. They need to do that, only with DC characters and stop following the Marvel model because they cannot do that.

This is complete conjecture from Batman-News. Even if Dungeons and Dragons was released on schedule, which still isn’t a done deal, Chris McKay would still have enough to time to make Nightwing even if filming on D&D started mid 2020.

        I honestly don't know... I'm just very disappointed he's not doing Batgirl anymore. I generally don't care for these irrelevant spin-offs that WB loves to announce (Sirens, Birds of Prey, Harley and Joker, Joker standalone, Deadshot movie, Deathstroke movie, etc), but Batgirl was the one exception because they had Joss Whedon. It was gonna be a guaranteed hit film of quality. But nope, that's not even gonna happen.

        Sorry, but the Whedon hate is obscene here. Not only is Zack to blame for 99% of JL's problems, but all the praise JL got (the character interactions) were due to Whedon's direction. Blame him all you want, but he had nothing to do with the story, casting, villain, runtime, bad CGI, etc.
        Maybe the final cut wasn't that good, but reverse the roles here. What if Whedon had made JL and was fired mid-production. What if they hired Snyder to do some rewrites / reshoots. Do you really think Snyder would have done a better job? Heck no. Snyder isn't even close to being the director that Joss is, nor will he ever be. WB asked Whedon to do the impossible, and he semi-delivered. That's no small feat. Yet "fans" are so pro-Snyder... So anti-antyingthatisntsnyder... Frankly, so toxic... to the point that none of you can even appreciate what Whedon did.
        JL had better critical reception and box office legs than BvS had. Let that sink in. Yet people pretend Whedon is the problem. Give me a break.
        There is ONE constant factor here... and that's Zack Snyder. Not even WB is a constant factor, as WW turned out great (and it seems Aquaman will be as well). It's only when Snyder makes movies, that everything turns to shit. I'm just sick of fanboys blaming everything and everyone except for the single person who's the root cause of it all: Zack freaking Snyder.

        No, I would expect it to be a bad film considering that Snyder has NOT ONCE delivered. It's far more logical to assume he didn't deliver again, than to assume he did somehow magically deliver this time.
        I agree that Whedon seems like an iffy dude. Not only because I really do not care for his feminist horseshit, but he cheated on his wife, despite championing for the respect of women. It's hypocritical to say the least. But I don't care about how someone is like, more so than I care about his or her skills. And I'd choose to work with Whedon, knowing that he can be a pain, over Snyder EVERY time, for the simple fact that Whedon is more skilled as a writer/ director.
        That said, Zack barely "promoted" JL after being fired. I don't hold that against him though, I just don't think what you're saying is accurate.

        Not really. I genuinely hold no ill towards Whedon. I can call him an asshole if the rumors are true, but other than that I'm not blaming him for anything until I know for sure. And I said that Jenkins supposedly displayed her dislike to Whedon publicly.
        But that's in your opinion. Many others would agree or disagree that he had delivered with his previous films. You cannot say that no one like his two other DC films. I mentioned that Snyder should've kept his mouth during the MoS 2 meeting instead of mentioning his Bruce Wayne cameo. I mentioned that he probably regrets the Zod neck snap decision, because of the never-ending backlash.
        I don't see JL as the pinnacle of Whedon's abilities. I still remember Avengers and AoU.

        There is such a thing as critical success, and that's completely objective.
        The fact is, Whedon has enjoyed nothing but critical success for decades now, with his only bad movie being JL.
        Zack has NEVER enjoyed critical success, unless he was adapting someone else's work.
        I personally didn't care for the first Avengers... that doesn't stop that movie from being one of the most highly praised CBMs of ALL time, and being the number one most successful CBM ever. Those are facts.
        Zack has made 3 critically disappointing at best, and panned at worst films, 2 of which severely underperformed, and the other generating massive losses for the studio.

        With your logic, it makes no difference whether you hire Nolan or Bay, because it's all subjective, right? It isn't. There are objective standards of skill. Some people are better than others.

        Also, if the extent of "Snyder screwing up" according to you, is him mentioning Batman and Zod's death... then really, I don't think you hold him accountable at all. Those are trivial details compared to the massive blunders he's made elsewhere.

        Him mentioning Bruce's cameo led to BvS being pushed to production. People here and other sites keep asking why MoS 2 hasn't been and that MoS 2 should've made before BvS. Zack unknowingly set up himself for "failure". And the neck snap isn't a trivial detail since that was the most controversial thing this Superman has done and it had turned off a LOT of fans.
        And what's so bad about adapting someone else's work? Peter Jackson got mass amounts of praise for LOTR. Even some of Spielberg's most memorable work is based off of someone else's work.

        Just to put things in perspective since some of the Snyderkids here need a reality check: When I went on YouTube and saw videos reporting Whedon's departure from DC, tons of people have commented that they would love for Whedon to return to the MCU, that he's a great director, and that DC is a total shitstorm. I saw the same thing, MCU fans are hoping Joss will return, and how can you blame them? All the MCU fans that were commenting on DC movies I read were actually trying to help point out why our universe sucks, and a lot of it I agree with them on. Not once did I see a pro-Snyder bot jump in with their usual Snyder love fest rants. Here, that is all you get. Anway, until Zack's shit is flushed from the DC system, we are always going to be divided on the DC side instead of united, another issue MCU fans don't have to deal with.         JL’s critical failure was caused by WB’s interference during post production AFTER Snyder left. Y do u think they rushed out the UE of BvS? They cut out several scenes that helped it make more sense.

In reality, it seems its overall problem is, as many have said, that it’s a Frankenstein movie.

        At the end of the day, Elfman is objectively more skilled than Junkie could ever hope to be. If you know anything about music, you'd acknowledge that.

        Glad you share my pov. I think even reboot right away would bomb. General audiences don't know/care about differences about extended universes so if WB already introduced an extended universe, it'll be hard to explain people how this one is a different one.

        I don't know if that is true. I think they are still trying to piece together a DCEU. Everything I have read points to a JL2/Legion of Doom, and the WB execs kept Snyder's Legion of Doom tie-in in JL with the Lex on the boat scene. So, we know there is Lex and Deathstroke, plus WW2 will have Cheetah, Black Manta from Aquabrah, the rogues gallery from Flashpoint....all seem like the villains one would find in LoD.

        Well we also suppose to get something from Reeves' The Batman soon and from what I have read, WB wants to fastrack Flash/Flashpoint and MoS2. The Batman will be a "reboot" if Fatleck doesn't want to do it, or WB decides to just cut his tie. He won't give them an answer atm. Superman, we are stuck with Cavill, the man of mope, I guess.

    Whedon didn't leave to work on a new Buffy tv show, so stop that rumor. One of his projects he is going to work on is continuing his Buffyverse comic book series. He is also looking at other projects with Netflix and Apple.

This is a good thing. Now that they're softly de-committing from the whole shared universe thing that they could absolutely never do right, they can focus on these stand-alones and I'd rather see them delayed than rushed out the door.

The DCEU has a branding issue. If BP made $250 million in 4 days and WW made half that amount, there is a problem. They are both equal, BP gave us the first black superhero with his own micro-universe, and WW was the first female superhero with her own micro-universe. Both were considered a success by critics and fans. There is no reason, other than the fact DC is now tarnished, that WW should not have matched BP at the box office. We also saw how JL performed at the box office. People have given up on the DCEU. Maybe instead of just throwing one-offs and five different Joker movies out there hoping something sticks, they should really get a game plan going...or best...REBOOT!

  I sympathize with the idea of a complete reboot but I can’t say I’m fully on board with it. Mainly because of WW. That film was such a huge success and it would be a great shame to completely wipe it away with a reboot.

    A reboot of the universe is too soon. Frankly, I don't think there will ever be another DC universe. They will reboot the characters in standalones, but that's about that. I don't see team-ups in our future, at least not until 2040.

    I've always believed that it'd take a truly epic collapse for WB to reboot the DCFU, considering all the effort that's gone into making it happen. But I'm certain all these failures are weighing in the minds of shareholders as well. I think with 2 more failures they might have their hand forced.

  DC is definitely radioactive in the eyes of the public while Marvel can do no wrong. These are two extremes. Wonder Woman was tied to BvS which left people discouraged and bewildered while Black Panther appeared in CW, which was a huge success. One more thing to consider is that Marvel is sort of telling its bigger story with every new release, and since Avengers: IW is right around the corner, people probably wanted to see if there's some "bigger picture" stuff there.

    Which is again, reasons why they need to rethink/reboot. WW could be left alone. This also begs the question, will Aquaman (which I would like rebooted to another actor eventually) be tainted by the same ties? It also doesn't help to read press releases of A-level directors jumping ship....which seems to be frequently.

      This is a genuine predicament. Wonder Woman worked, but then again, she couldn't bring enough crowd to JL, so that makes you wonder if her star hasn't already began fading. Momoa is a terrible Aquaman, and frankly, I have no idea if people give his movie a shot. Maybe if the marketing is really strong, and maybe because it will be underwater which sort of cool? Batman and Superman need to be rebooted ASAP, like yesterday. Cavill should have been unemployed the second he showed up with a moustache for the reshoots.

        It really is unfortunate, because I think Cavill makes the perfect Superman, and despite my personal misgivings about the casting of Gal Gadot, people in large have accepted her. And that's about it when it comes to DCFU successes.

        I see Aquaman making 6-700 mill. If more, great, if less, oh boy, but I think that's a safe range. BP would've been fine there, but that range is a thing of the past after just 10 days... yeah 6-700 mill is too optimistic for Aquaman now I really think about it. Xmen Apocalypse numbers more like it. Innthe 400's, ouch.

      It's not dumb at all. Wonder Woman had some strong feminist wind at her back in the weeks leading to her movie, and it barely cracked the 100M opening weekend. The movie had huge hype and skewed criticism, so that gave it longer legs. Overall, it was a big success in North America, and did just fine elsewhere. BP is doing amazing though, alarmingly amazing. I mean it's doing Avengers numbers for crying out loud! Assuming similar hype for both Wonder Woman and Black Panther, there's a meaningful disparity in opening weekend numbers.

The foreign story is not over, well neither is the domestic, but I guess were really see in these next couple weekends with Japan and China. I think however that black panthers foreign take, which is already at 300 million after 10 days, will beat wonder woman's foreign by 200 million. So 600 million, 300 more to go. And domestic, it will beat wonder woman's 413 in the next couple days. Maybe even tonight or tomorrow. And what people have been saying is that foreign markets do not like black people movies, well, it seems they love Marvel movies.

  I dunno man... haven´t we had enough reboots of DC characters in the past? Also, a reboot wouldn´t magically fix anything. I mean, what would change? The actors and producers mainly, but unless DC founds it´s own movie studio, and WB stops interfering so damn much, I don´t see much sense in a reboot. I can however completely understand why you would feel that way. It´s a mess right now.

        Yes exactly, but somehow Disney doesn´t seem to interfere all that much with the movies Marvel Studios puts out, or at least they do it discreetly. The only time I can recall is when they wouldn´t let Shane Black adapt the "Demon in a bottle" storyline for Iron Man 3.

Black Panther and Wonder Woman belong to the CB genre, came out at around the same time, had similar agendas and budgets, so they are very comparable, UNLIKE Avatar. Introduce him in Batgirl! Have Barbara's relationship with Dick begin in her movie, and maybe drop some hints about his Nightwing persona (he lives in Bludhaven but is visiting 'family' in Gotham). Then maybe have him as a small assist with Batgirl's mission near the end of the movie (not save her, just provide help in some small way. Or hell, have her save him and do the whole "Dick? Is that you?! situation).
I think it'd be fun to have a Nightwing cameo in Batgirl - get the general audience familiar with his character so he's not just showing up out of nowhere with his solo movie (like Shazam). Barbara and Dick are important to each other in the books, so it just makes sense to have him show up in Batgirl's movie in some way.

That's fine, Nightwing can be done but after a good Batman trilogy, no less. Like others have mentioned though, it seems WB is just throwing anything at the moment to see what sticks. They need to get a solid plan, stick to it, adjust minor things here and there, stay the course and it will be successful. They have had so many big changes, due to lack of direction, lack of coherent planning, and trust, that it has hurt them enormously. You need these things if you are going to create a gigantic cinematic universe. Hopefully, they get it soon, if not I hope they simply sell their rights to another studio and reboot this entire franchise.

At this point people should realize that it is useless to get excited for a movie that is only "rumored" or "in talk". Studios work on different projects that don't go anywhere all the time and Warner doesn't have a rigid plan for their DC movies. Wait for the official announcement: that means Aquaman, Shazam and Wonder Woman 2 for now.

Hey, Chris, DCEU movies are like Cain Velazquez or Khabib. You can't get excited for the announcement until you watch them walk out to the cage lol, they might get injured. Until I see a trailer, I won't get excited about any DC movie from happening
