NYT best-selling author offers to write 'Batgirl'; Warner Bros. responds

Earlier this week, writer/director Joss Whedon dropped out of Batgirl. The reason? "I didn’t really have a story," he said. Roxane Gay, a New York Times best-selling author who has written Marvel comics before, thinks she has a story.

"Hey DC Comics, I can write your Batgirl movie, no prob," Gay tweeted. And it didn't take long for Warner Bros. to reply! Michele Wells, a VP at WB/DC Entertainment, followed up saying "if you're serious... contact me." And she provided her email address.

Well well well. This is fun and in the public eye.
I suppose this means DC hasn't given up on this one.

  She would obviously be adept at writing on the challenges of being a female in our age.
  Depending on the direction of the story, this could be very promising.

Joss Whedon probably left DC to direct the Black Widow movie.Seeing as he call himself a feminist, I doubt that he would this easily give up directing a female lead superhero movie.Especially, After Black Panther success.
He has directed Marvel's two highest grossing movies so they will probably welcome him with open arms.

      He'd have to kiss his way back. Whedon seems to be a prideful man, I kinda doubt he'll do that. It's likely the new heads at WB let him go over the lawsuits sent by his wife. With the #MeToo movement hovering in the air, nobody wants to associate with anyone who might not have treated a woman right.

        I think WB was also upset with the reception of JL. Whedon was supposed to come in and fix the "mess" but he couldn't. They gave Zack the boot, might as well give Whedon the boot too. Right or wrong, fair or unfair, it seems like a move the DC execs would do.

        Don't generalize just so you could validate your baseless hatred toward everything Marvel. Either way, it was much more organic and engaging than Cavill and Adams. Those two have the chemistry of siblings.

        Uh, it’s actually true. A lot of fans hated the romance. It came out of nowhere. That was the main reason Whedon got off of Twitter. Fans were pissed.
        At least you could see the budding romance in MoS. It’s not like they barely had any dialogue together in MoS, but then are already banging each other in BvS.

        It didn’t come out of nowhere. It was explained in the movie. She was helping him control the green guy since the New York incident & that’s how the romance happened.

        My major complaint with AoU is how painfully undeveloped Ultron and Vision were compared to how poetic, resonant, and memorable they could have been.

        For me, I would’ve been fine with the romance if it was hinted at least in Avengers or even Winter Soldier. They just act like it was obvious that Widow liked him, we, the audience, and Banner were too oblivious to notice. And what it made it worse is that Banner doesn’t even mention Betty.

        Yeeeaahh, that's an unfortunate casualty of the way they handled TIH and Edward Norton. It's like it's 'half-canon' or something. Still pissed about that. I liked TIH a lot; very close to being the Hulk movie the character deserves..
        I agree that I wish it were fleshed out more, but I liked it (mostly in a sweet/cute affection way as opposed to a swooning romance way), and I hope they take it somewhere more fleshed out later. :)

        2. At the very least, we see that he's been researching and even hacking security systems to spy on the heroes. This is makes it easy to assume and buy that he did the same things to find out Batman and Superman's identity.

        AoU just acts like it's obvious that Widow likes Banner. I don't need to see the two go on a date. I just wanted to see a hint at the very least that Widow, the spy who was trained to hide her emotions, does have affections for someone.

        Box office doesn't matter. There will always be the fact that there was a backlash and it was one part of why Whedon almost gave up on directing.

        Some of them definitely didn't, and, despite pretending they did, still need things explained - and I'm not talking about plot holes, sadly.
        At least some of the plot hole complaints are sometimes understandable, even if they're overblown and we never see plot hole complaints leveled at other superhero movies with this kind of excessive ferocity. :P
        I can't count the number of times, right after the movie came out, that people said things like, "Why was Batman so angry?" or "Batman had no reason to fight Superman" to me... and I had to break down things that were very clearly in the movie that they just totally spaced on somehow.

        BO and critical acclaim are the two best, the only metrics to judge a film by. Transformers while successful at the BO is widely regarded as a garbage franchise. Surely, you're not making those suggestions at Avengers...

        Oh that is so wrong. By that logic, Wizard of Oz is a horrible movie. Critics hated it and I believe it was a box office bomb as well. John Carpenter’s “The Thing” bombed critically and only made back its budget.

        You didn't even think of googling its critical reception during its original release. Now I could be wrong though, because when checking again, one website said that critics were positive towards the film, but it did face some harsh criticism.

        I'm not suggesting you should base your opinion on what other people feel. I'm suggesting you should know to separate your opinion from what is considered the general consensus. For instance, BvS. You like the film, it has a special place in your heart. That's cool. I don't have a problem with that. However, when you ignore, dismiss, and disregard other metrics, public perception, and real issues with the film simply because you like it, that's... not cool. I like a few shitty films. I know they're shitty, and I still like them. I am able to hold onto my opinion while simultaneously understand their undeniable flaws. You should learn to do the same.

In bvs you have to assume and fill in the blanks all throughout the movie, but they cant fill in the blanks on a marvel movie loll they will criticize it and nitpick it to the bone. The same guys nitpicking black panther when its a far better movie with less flaws than bvs.

        Ultron had some good stuff, but I wanted his theme to be taken a lot further. It felt like a great premise fell a little flaccid to me. Vision's underdevelopment is part of that.
        I'll give you this: He was handled better than Steppenwolf was in JL.

        Oh, I agree he was decently developed. It wasn't that anything was missing per se, but that I wanted them to take the theme further and explore the contrast between him and Vision, and give Tony more of an emotionally meaningful and impactful resolution.
        There's a battle of ideas that revolves around the three of them that wasn't very explored. Ultron is the challenge to their world views in a way that should mirror the Joker to Batman. It never felt that intense, so I was disappointed.
        I found him to basically check the boxes of being decent, but not special. He could have been special.
        This is typical of most superhero films though. I'm probably just a little spoiled by the Nolan days.

I simply stated that I felt Ultron had a good arc, and that the romance between Banner and Widow was compelling to watch. Does the film have problems? Sure does. I still think it's a good movie. I enjoyed it. You're entitled to feel differently.

        BvS is nothing like AoU. AoU is a well-acclaimed film holding to 75% RT and made $1.4B at the BO. BvS is mocked and despised by fans of DC and comics alike, holding onto 27% RT and the record for the most disastrous 2nd weekend plunge at the BO.

        Actually, what you said wasn't exactly a counter-argument either. :P All he was doing was pointing that out.
        He was talking about the movies themselves and the problems they (supposedly) both have being comparable. You completely dodged even discussing the films themselves or their criticisms, and dove into their financial results and RT scores instead as though it addressed what he said utterly and definitively somehow. It didn't.
        For the record, because I keep seeing BvS fans getting lumped together like we all have the exact same position on everything: I personally don't mind AoU. I wish it was more interesting and meaty, but I liked it fine. I know fans didn't like the Widow x Hulk thing, but I thought it was fresh and warm-hearted, so I'm interested in seeing more of that unfolding.
        Fingers crossed it gets at least a nod in Infinity or the Black Widow movie (if that ever happens).

I don't believe for a second that Whedon didn't have a story. He's an acclaimed writer, and this is clearly a PR stunt. He asked to leave because of the fucking mess that the film division of DC has become, and they spun the story like it was a "mutual decision because they wanted a female director". What a load of crap. DC has no vision and no obvious plans, and the pace of which they're losing directors is disturbing. Then again, no well-known director wants to be associated with Snyder's "legacy". It's essentially career suicide.

        But they're not as major as the core JL members who haven't even had movies yet. The foundations of the DCEU have yet to even be fully established. Should we really get a movie about a particular character's ex-sidekick before he even has his own movie?

        I don't disagree; I just think they're amazing and I'll take anything I can get toward more amazing movies about characters I love. haha
        Flash seems to be a priority to them right now, we've got Aquaman, Shazam, and WW2 rolling, and we know they're developing GL, Batman, and Supes, so I'm not terribly worried about the majors. It's just gonna require patience - and if they can get Nightwing and Batgirl rolling in the meantime to tide us over, I say, "The more the merrier." :)
        As far as secondary characters go, they're among the most popular, recognizable, and well-written characters from DC, so I consider that at least major enough to bump up against Flash's heels. It makes sense to want to make movies about them - and about Harley, Joker, and Catwoman too.

        After BvS, we had the critics and audience at large clamoring for a Ben Affleck solo Batman movie, and it actually seemed to be the most hyped possibility from the DCEU before he (understandably) flaked on us.
        You can have reservations about the portrayal, but it was very popular, and most seemed to consider the things that fans on here blow up about pretty minor compared to the rest of the performance, which is sadly overlooked here.
        BvS was in no way going to sink Batman, with or without considering that fuller context. The behind the scenes drama and JL might have slowed him down for a bit, though.

    If GL has the same budget as GotG, I think they'll do fine.
    I would say GotG is more sci-fi/action-adventure than superhero compared to MoS, which has sci-fi elements but is much more focused on the hero aspect of things. Love both. :)
    I'm hoping they go with the 'buddy cop' Rush Hour style thing that was rumored, with Hal Jordan sort of showing John Stewart the ropes and their personalities clashing and mingling.
    Would love a proper solo movie for Hal after that focusing on Sinestro, and for John to eventually join the JL with Hawkgirl and Martian Manhunter.

I'm open for a batgirl movie , but we should focus on getting the main heroes right and setup before we even start doing secondary characters. The movie I wanted the most was the Ben Affleck directed The Batman movie but since that's out of the way they need to fix the batman issue is Ben out most likely he is. Let's focus on getting the Flash right first but no they wanna do flashpoint a movie that should be the last in a trilogy and a semi reboot but no they are clueless. For as much shit the trolls give Snyder at least he had a vision and knew where he wanted to take the DCEU smh. We would of had a flash movie this march but WB lost the first director cuz I guess they didn't let him be a director. I lost a lot of faith and excitement with the dceu since JL, but I still have hope they will find the right formula to move forward cuz I love these characters and DC comics.   I said the same thing in the past, that DC superheroes are harder to adapt to cinema because they are just so OP. You need to use so much CGI, and the technology today isn't well-equipped to tackle such a task. CGI works best when using it as an augmentation tool. Excessive use of it just looks fake as fuck.

    Ive always held the first 2/3ds of MoS as one of the best comic book films of all time. Then the 3rd act starts and its a shit show of CGI. People can argue if it was warranted or not but you cant argue that it was too extravagant.

        When I watched that, particularly the shot where Zod throws Clark through 6 buildings at once, my reaction was, "at last, THIS is how Kryptonians fight!"
        To be honest, I've only ever seen 1 or 2 clips in the animation in a recent DC movie that made me take notice. There's one long shot of Doomsday in BvS where he jumps and it's awkward, like something out of an old Sinbad movie, and then the mouth thing although I still can't put my finger on what's not right, just that it isn't. I've never had a problem with anything else in the CGI in any of these films.

Sometimes putting it out there, pays off...kind of. Channing Tatum was cast as Gambit, simply because he expressed interest in playing the character in an interview. Fans forget how hard it can be to even get people to wanna write superhero movies, find an interested and capable director, and then get it into production. WB's struggles are frustrating as hell, but they're not new. WB's announced and never made DC movie library, is huge. Going all the way back to at least the late 90's.

It took Nolan to convince them to greenlight a reboot, and go with Goyer's script, which he vouched for. And after that, everybody's favorite director, Zack Snyder, was hired. Obviously Marvel Studios makes it look easy. But WB trying to emulate that efficiency and consistency, hasn't quite worked.
        Zack Snyder and his team created the DCEU. Now WB has to rebuild. And based off of their track record, it may take them a WHILE.

    I have a major problem with consistency in the DCEU, or lack thereof. In this scene, she has super-speed, and only in this scene. She didn't have it in her solo movie. She didn't have it when the league was attacked by Pet Cemetery. And she didn't have it in the final battle against SW. Again, another example of poor character development and lack of preplanning. WB. doesn't have anyone like Feige that monitors those sort of things, that cares about the characters. It looked cool, so they went and did it. The hell with consistency.

      I just posted above a 4chan account of Zack's version of JL. In it, WW fails to stop the bomb, so if it is true, I would say this superspeed scene was added by Whedon to save the people instead. It might account for the inconsistency.

  Yeah, I understand what you mean with Batgirl, but I am worried that it will dilute Wonder Woman's presence, and success, for the DCEU. This is the main issue I have, as I think its too soon to throw a Batgirl movie out. They need a WW trilogy before that in my opinion. MCU has not had a female led movie, so it is different for them. I just don't want WB messing up Wonder Woman, she's the best they have at the moment, and has single handedly saved the DCEU thus far.

The Zack and Joss show is fun, and Zack Snyder’s totally entitled to it, but the really nice part was seeing all the happy women on Twitter when the Batgirl project was liberated. We’ve now seen it at DC and Marvel, with Wonder Woman and Black Panther: if you’re legitimate and your audience feels the authenticity, you tap into an enormous reservoir of goodwill. Why give that away?

      Having a 4-hour cut of a movie is never a good thing, doesn't matter who you are. It shows a waste of time and resources and uncertainty in your vision. So no, I'm not claiming for a second that that's a good thing. Coogler got away with it because his final cut has proven a mega success, and that's the only difference between him and Snyder. But you would never want someone building you a house while wasting twice the money and finishing it 4 months late, would you?

        Not necessarily. Patty directed a movie that belongs to the same genre and had a comparable budget. She was just much more efficient. She had a clear vision, and she didn't need hours of additional footage that she may or may not decide to put in the final cut. That's what you always want if you're a producer. The shortest path, in the shortest time, while economical as possible. Simple logic.

        Oh my freaking God. He said “tend to”. He never said that these type of films always have a lot of extra footage. You’re arguing with the words of a guy who has been in the business for decades.
        Just stop acting like you know better than the professionals.

  Yeah, well, remember: Their belief that Snyder's films are garbage is predicated on a foundational premise that Snyder's films are garbage. Which means that, inevitably and inarguably, Snyder's films must be garbage.

    Oh yeah. I knew that they would try to deflect and even say "Well the movie got praise and is making a lot of money". I just wanted to see what other stuff they can pull out their own asses. I wasn't disappointed.

We should test the limit of the tweet-liking. Somebody should tweet that Fox had no choice but to cancel Firefly given the ratings and see if Zack Snyder likes that. It sounds like Joss really alienated people at DC.
