J.K. Simmons says Commissioner Gordon scenes were cut from 'Justice League'

Collider caught up with J.K. Simmons to talk about his new Starz series Counterpart, but asked him about Justice League and even The Batman as well.

Simmons joked that he was barely involved in Justice League and revealed that even some of his brief screen time was cut from the theatrical release. Simmons said he has "no idea" what to expect going forward, but is hopeful that he'll be able to play Gordon again. Check out the DC movie portion of the interview below.

It was great to see you in Justice League, but we only just got a glimpse of you. Were you involved with any of those re-shoots? Did you work with both directors on that?
SIMMONS: I was not, no. I was barely involved in the movie, period. And then, that even got cut. I only worked with Zack [Snyder]. Because I don’t really pay attention to show business, outside of my own thing, I was unaware of most of that. I didn’t even know until somebody in the press told me about the re-shoots. And I have no idea what to expect, going forward.
Do you hope we’ll still get to see more, at some point?
SIMMONS: Oh, yeah! Assuming that we’re gonna go forward, the way we think it will, I’m really looking forward to that. Hopefully, it will be really fun and the character will expand a little bit, particularly in the stand-alone Batman movie. There will be more to do. I guess it’s Matt Reeves now for that one, who I haven’t met. So, it will be a whole new collaborator to get together and work with, hopefully.

Matt Reeves is casting a new actor to play Batman in his movie and it's unclear whether Jeremy Irons and J.K. Simmons will be reprising their roles as Alfred and Gordon. Hopefully 2018 is the year where a lot of the questions about The Batman get answered.

Honestly, this whole franchise was ruined by bad leadership. The Snyder films were good and had a consistent theme. Suicide squad felt like it was going to fit in thematically but we saw what happened after all the cuts and changes were made to it. When wonder woman came along I had hope that wb was going to stay out of the way only to be proven wrong by justice league.

There was a good plan in place with a solid, consistent direction. Too many cooks in the kitchen at wb changed things too many times and I don’t think pulling in a much younger Batman will help if they want to continue a connected universe, which they should, but I don’t know how they’ll do it. The general audience may reject the dc films once and for all if the most famous character can’t be done right.

The Batman and Superman franchises definitely have to prove themselves, with every incarnation. But the interest from the general audience will always be there, if the director and the marketing does their job well. Wonder Woman was able to officially join them, with a well-received movie. The Trinity are all proven cinematic characters, that have been done well before, who people will always wanna see more of.
The more interesting thing, is seeing how popular the DCEU can make the other characters like Aquaman, Shazam, Black Adam, Deathstroke, Nightwing, or apparently Lobo, to the mainstream audience.

  Right, but I feel like it’s terrible leadership to start pulling in more characters into this instead of righting the ship with those already introduced. For example, instead of Shazam, MOS2 would be a great idea to have been making right now instead of Shazam. They could introduce Shazam via Dwayne Johnson in mos2. Johnson is box office gold atm and wb could’ve strategically used his momentum.

  He wanted to direct another Solo Superman movie to follow up on MOS. Which would have been the wiser choice. Making BVS wasn't his call to make, WB pretty much mandated he put BAtman in the movie to compensate for the perceived 'failings' of MOS which lead to a domino effect of poor decisionmaking. He took his best swing and struck out. and now we'll never get to see where he was planning to take the DCEU.
  Who knows. Maybe someday DC will let him publish a comic book miniseries showing where the DCEU would have gone before WB panicked. But I doubt it.

Because Theres plenty of story lines where they team up, which would've been better instead of having them fighting so soon. If bvs was mandatory, then snyder couldve come up with a better movie, i mean how hard is it to make a good movie when you have bats and supes?

      They mandated Batman being mean character in the movie and not just be a cameo.
      The problem was That Snyder tried to make both his original idea for a Superman movie and a Batman versus Superman movie work in the same movie and those two kinds of stories are kind of inherently incompatible with one another.
      I say it's better to aim high and Miss than to never met him at all but when it comes to DC they really should have played it safe. And now thanks for the mistakes they made they'll be doomed to never be relevant in the public eye ever again.

      Like I said though doesn't matter given they're rebooting the whole damn thing with Flashpoint. And will likely never see another Batman versus Superman movie ever again not for decades at least once the hatred for the current Incarnation goes away assuming it ever does go away. I know people who are still banging on about how episode one raped their childhoods. And poor Zack Snyder doesn't have nearly the same amount of Goodwill towards him as George Lucas did.

      Batman and super have a bigger history than star wars, so it a bigger deal, public enemies couldve worked perfectly if done right, even bvs. By the time flashpoint comes out, it would be a bit too late, unless aquaman and shazam are hits. Flashpoint isnt coming out before 2020 thats for sure.

  Was it really WB? If I remember correctly, because Nolan was the hero after his 3 Batman movies, he was chosen to be Exc. Producer for MoS and he is the one who brought in Snyder. Look it up, that’s how it went down. WB pleaded with Nolan to do more Batman or even MoS. He said no, and this is what we got!!

      Don't take my comment personally. I have nothing against you - Snyder is just a linear director with only a few tricks up his sleeve. Watch his movies a few times, and let it all sink ink. His only good movie was 300, and that's because it was a 99% action movie requiring almost no story writing.

you are forgetting one major fact though. There was an overwhelming negative response to BvS. THATS why everything changed. If Man of Steel and BvS had been met with great reviews and much financial success, Justice League and Suicide Squad would not have been messed with. And don't say the UE would have made it all better. The film still suffers from the same controversial creative decisions that plagued the TC for many people. Plus a lot of people already thought it was long boring. Can you imagine what they would have thought of the 3 hour version? I liked it, but these films can't just appeal to a niche minority of people. Speaking of Suicide Squad, that movie had more problems than just some weird editing and too much music. It still had the absolutely atrocious Enchantress which pretty much tanked the movie for me. It was still a poor representation of that what Suicide Squad is supposed to be. The writing was still mediocre a lot of the time. The entire aesthetic of the film was still questionable. And some people, myself NOT included, just plain did not like Jared Leto's joker. A couple more scenes of him probably would not have changed much.

    obviously they weren't trying to ruin them. They were trying to salvage them by doing what they thought would be more appealing to the audience. We can all agree it may have been a misguided attempt. But I understand WHY they did what they did.
    Man of Steel did okay at the BO but it should have done better imo. A superman movie has the potential to make a billion dollars. And BvS didn't do "poorly". buit it was expected to do WAY better. The shareholders were promised a billion dollar movie. With Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Doomsday, and rumored JL cameos all sharing the screen for the first time ever, this thing was expected to make Avengers money. SO yes, in that sense, it was financially disappointing. And it was mixed from the GA, but the critics seemed to absolutely HATE it.

    Mos didnt do great at the b.o, it did decent numbers but still underperformed. Bvs definitely underperformed and missed out on a lot of money, couldnt even hit a billion with the biggest heroes ever, record breaking second weekend drop, not to mention the terribke reviews, it wasnt mixed like you claim, only mos was mixed.

  The UC fixed the main storytelling issues from the TC, like showing Luthor's men burning the bodies in Africa so people thinking that Superman had killed them made sense. Some of the concerns with the audience thinking that the movie was overlong / boring might have been fixed with better marketing to let the GA know what the movie really was; too many of them went in thinking it was going to have an MCU feel to it, so when they didn't get that they were naturally disappointed.
  But as for "the same controversial creative decisions," if you mean "mopey Superman," "Batman kills too many people," "Not Luthor," then I can't help you. Every creator that reboots the comics gets to put his own spin on things, and I'm happy to let the movie creators have the same privilege. Besides, businessman Luthor is played out; it's time for him to go. Silicon Valley-esque Wunderkind Luthor is a far more interesting take for this era.

I think it may already be 'over'. At this point Aquaman may be a throw-away.
I just came back from watching Black Panther and i have to admit.... it was pretty good.
Its just not as good as critics are implying. Which is interesting, because at this point we all know that Marvel just has to put out something good on screen to be universally loved, meanwhile DC has to put out Citizen Kane just to get a positive reaction by same critics. Aquaman has no chance.

      I went to see WW twice and really enjoyed it. WW addressed humanity in such a way that it really hit home. It addressed sexism, racism, greed in a very powerful way. They missed it with the Villain. The true Villain was the lady doctor/scientist with the mask. She was really creepy and it would have put the movie over the top if she was that Master Manipulator hidden in plain sight. BP on the other didn't make that mistake. Killmonger was cut from the same mold as some of the most radical dictators in history. The pain of what was done to him symbolized what was done to a people. The anger, hate, abandonment. People who never experienced it through there history could not truly understand it. So in both cases these movies can't be as good as the Dark Knight because they can relate to deranged monster like the Joker because that is what you see today. I thought TDK was a great movie but thought Winter Soldier was better.

      The scene where WW made a stand coming out that bunker didn't look like light and fun to me. She took serious fire. Those soldiers and civilians she defended had real war torn realism to it. I wonder now if you really watched the movie. Having light moments in serious movies in the right place eases the tension. Remember Batman'' hockey pants comment in TDK. Those moments when done properly don't take away the seriousness of the film.

  I agree and I think it’s a shame. There will probably be less of an emphasis for A connected universe now. Especially when they make a new Batman movie with a different actor and possibly younger all around characters. I had looked forward to seeing and hearing more about Jason Todd after seeing his suit in the bat cave but that may never be talked about again in these films at this point.

    Now at least we have a new trilogy to look forward to from Reeves but everything else looks like strange standalone ideas.

I'm not going to act like the MCU it's perfect, but even you can't deny that they managed to create a successful cinematic universe that has impacted the film industry in many ways. Hell, the MCU's very existence is what inevitably led to the birth of the DCEU. So give it that at least.

  I saw BP and thought it was pretty amazing. I think the cultural aspect and the sins of the Father was what did it for me. That beat down by Killmonger was so emotional, it was clear T'Challa was mentally defeated before the fight. Also, the symbol of African vs. African American and the difference was so pronounced that it was culturally shocking. You see it often in various ethnic groups in real life. In the end we are really one big family cut from the same cloth.

      When i did say Marvel films aren't reviewed well? Yeah of course they're reviewed well because they're great films, that's usually how it goes you know. As for Annihilation well if its liked then critics will score it good, last year had plenty of non superhero films what scored well with Blade Runner being one of them. End of the day if someone likes or loves a film they will give it a 3/5,4/5 or 5/5 and all 3 of them count as fresh on RT so yeah Marvel films may have that 90%+ on RT but remember that isn't because a bunch of critics gave it 9/10.

      Next up i guess is an Oscar for best picture for IW.

      A great film is a film what has really entertained me and what i think is really well made, Black Panther done both of those things. You may not understand this but it is possible to think that both Black Panther and something like the new Blade Runner are great films, great on review scale is around 8 or 9 for me with 10 being all time classic like any Kubrick film, Alien, Jaws, The Dark Knight and so on.
      By the way if you really don't like comic books and comic book films then why are you on here throwing a hissy fit because the vast majority think Black Panther is a great film? God my taste in films ranges from foreign films i suspect you never heard off to classics like Citizen Kane to Kubrick and Hitchcock to Blockbusters to comic book films and on and on, i will watch and enjoy anything and my top 10 has everything from Drive to Terminator 2 to The Raid 2 to Alien to The Dark Knight and to Doctor Strangelove and The Shining. Working at a cinema means i can watch all the new releases for free so i get to see a vast selection of films each year, so yeah act like a dick but i suspect my film palette is far greater then yours.

I disagree with you in regards to "There was a good plan..." There was never a good plan, it was a reactionary mess one after another from the start. Marvel on the other hand had a good plan and even though I have not been a fan of a lot of their movies, they were organized and they did it right. The fact that Black Panther made more money domestically in this 4 day weekend than JL made in it's entire run is evidence of how badly WB/DC fubar'd this whole thing.

I mean that there was a good plan in so much as they had a film slate laid out, suicide squad introduced some of justice league (mainly batman’s) villains, and was meant to continue an overarching story. That led me to believe Batman would have a pretty deep solo that won’t happen now.
  Too many people were involved in changing those plans. For example, rick famuyiwa’s flash. It would be coming out soon had the execs left the film makers to do what they wanted. He actually just tweeted a jab at WB.
  Hate or love Snyder, I think justice league had a lot of big payoffs for the previous films so far. His story idea was good enough for Wonder Woman to be a smash hit, and I think justice league would have had a similar payoff if left alone.

As regards how they might bring in the new Batman , i have a feeling we will get an introduction to knightwing or maybe another former Robin- who will then possibly take over as Batman , they may even include shades of Batman Beyond.I honestly don't think Batfleck was the issue but i would rather see him commit himself properly despite what the critics have to say.It feels to me like he has had one foot in and one out since BvS.
My other theory is that they will use Flashpoint to turn Bats into Thomas Wayne...and that the Matt Reeves' Bats will be set in that timeline with JDM....

      i did some research and yeah im way of the mark about the cost of the reshoots but they were still trash and out of place... look josh is a fine director but his work involving justice league was lazy cringy and a straight up copy of the marvel vibe and dialoge and that made the movie part of that disney formula trash that is infecting all big blockbuster movies nowdays. Instead of spending money on making the reshoots they shoud have finessed the snyder cut and realesed it to theaters instead of this jusice/avengers league crap that we got

      They said his cut was unwatchable, and they didnt want another bvs. Joss was brought in last minute into that movie, and out of that 2 hours of footage, probably 30 min belonged to whedon and the rest was zack, minus the extra stuff that was cut from the movie.

      Whedon brought good chemistry to the movie, a better looking Steppenwolf, ww booty shots, and that cool batman scene in tge beginning. The cgi mouth is wb's fault. Some of the jokes felt forced since he was asked to add them instead of making it natural. I believe that if it was his movie from the beginning, it wouldve been good. Cant say the same for snyder after bvs.

      You little troll, the only thing that worked in that movie was the interactions among the league. Even the most Snyder fanatics loved the final scene of Bruce supposedly buying the bank to save Martha Kent's house. It's moments like these that make these big ensemble movies worth watching. I'm not saying Whedon directed that scene, but rather that he inserted many character moments that would've been otherwise neglected. Snyder has no understanding of character development, and his cut would've been just the dour hot mess we had received with MoS and BvS.
      And as for Cavill's moustache, reshoots were already planned. Whether Snyder, Whedon, or Scorsese directing them, we would've still gotten that floating lip. But when you're a troll, facts don't matter. Isn't it right?

      I remember now one instance when comicbookmovies.com held a poll for their readers to vote for the best 2016 cbm. Against all odds BvS was ahead by a huge margin. Now, you could say that again that was rigged, but take into account that that site has one of worst anti-dc communities you can see around here, and, however, it was winning, so maybe the readers who don't spend so much time in the comments think differently from those who are always crapping.
      However, the day the winner was to be announced the poll disappeared and Civil War was declared the winner... Many protested against that but the staff ignored it. I'm not making this up, just search it in google.
      The point of all this is just to show you that there are supporters (that wasn't the only poll where people showed it), but they are always dismissed and I can't understand for the life of me why is so difficult for people to see there are others who are supportive of the movies, and instead they are just fanboys, or rig polls, or have to crap on marvel, or things like that

      I never denied that it has alot of supporters, hell i argue with at least 5 a day, but the number of supporters is pretty tiny compared to the opposition, and im sure we can agree on that,so can wb. The polls you mention are useless tbh, civil war made over a billion at the b.o, it had a better better reviews from fans and critics, it outsold bvs in home release(even though the fanboys denied it), therefore, civil war is the better movie even though im not a fan of it, i can say that it was far superior than bvs.
      Theres nothing wrong by liking bvs or the other movies, as long as the fans doesnt proclaim them as masterpieces, bashing marvel, and prentend that we dont understand the movies and its the reason we do not like it.

      I don't care about the people who have to bash one to like the other (both sides) but what you say in your last paragraph it's want I really hate about all this: why do people have to attack people who show their interest in the DCEU?
      At least there are people who get it and see it's just an opinion, but there are a lot who think they are offended if someone mentions liking them...smh
      On a side note, for me BvS (extended edition more) was superior than Civil War, maybe just because in the end Civil War didn't take itself as serious as it should have regarding the themes they were touching, but if I had to tell you something that really hated while watching it was the hypocrisy from people. I remember watching it in the cinema and thinking "weren't people disgusted for this very same thing in BvS?" I couldn't believe the similarities that I caught between the movies and how one was praised while the other was bashed
      Anyway, Winter Soldier for me is both the best from that trilogy and my favourite from the MCU. If Black Panther is as good as people are saying and because of the reasons they are saying then it very well be one of my MCU top 3 from now on

      Bvs and civil war were similar, i agree 100%, but the difference was the execution and more importantly, civil war earned the story, it made sense since the audience were attached to the characters and been on a journey with them, which gave the movie more heart....we didnt know a danm thing about tge characters from bvs, other then supes mos...all we know about this batman is that his parents died(like every movie) and that robin is dead by the hand of the joker(which we know nothing about and couldn't feel his pain)...the whole movie the audience have to fill in the blanks, like no explanation on how lex knew all their secret identities etc...and i think that's key to the story since without this information, there would be no movie.

      I can agree on people having to assume some things, but c'mon Zemo's plan, intentions and MO was a lot worse than Luthor's. I didn't like Luthor's quirkiness, but at least his plan (especially in the EC) was a very Luthor-y plan, if you get what I mean. Zemo was nothing like the actual character, and the plan was executed more in coincidences than nothing else...
      And yeah, of course people were more attached to the MCU characters, but it didn't totally make sense, because Tony Stark, suddenly and out of the blue, started to behave like his comicbook counterpart (i.e. an @sshole), but we never saw him act in that extreme way before; in fact he was acting totally the opposite way of what we have seen before (acting alongside the government). It was also the first time we saw Stark's parents assassinated, which was also very reminiscense of the Wayne's ones and thus it was the first time we also experimented his (real) pain.
      Again, I know I'm not going to change your mind, but if you are going to say that execution was what made Civil War a better movie I can't agree with you on that, so I'd say let's agree to disagree ;p

    First of all, the critics don't understand what a good movie is, at the time they were shitting on Stanley Kubrick because they did not understanding him. So I don't really care about those critics who are following trends and can give 75% to a movie like Nymphomaniac or 82% to Sharnado.
    About the audience, if I have to choose between a OK or NO about JL, I would say OK like the audience, but it doesn't mean it would have been a much better movie if they have let Snyder to finish his vision, with his visual talent and crew.

I read the reviews, and am astounded by how closely they reflect my opinion. I then converse with other people, most of feel the same.       Nymphomaniac is actually a pretty great film, not for everyone sure but its well made regardless. Anyway that 82% means 82% LIKED the film, it only needs a 3 or a 6/10 to be classed as liked by the critic.
      By the way Kubrick is one of th greatest filmmakers to have ever lived could do make anything from one of the greatest comedies to one of the greatest Sci-Fi films and to one of the greatest horror films plus everything else he made. Snyder doesn't even come close to him, Kubrick's "worst" film is still better then anything Snyder has made. Give it 50 years and no one will remember Snyder's work where's Kubrick will still be talked about 100 years from now.

      It depends of the movie, when it's political (The Interview with James Franco & Seth Rogen for example), historical, indian, or comic book related, it is biased. Imdb is still a great reference because it's international and a lot people vote.

      Well, what I saw with Man of Steel in 2013 was and still is ahead of time about CGI and action scenes. Can't say the same about the reshoot scenes of a movie released by Joss + WB 5 years after Man of Steel .

Ah...a second time. Last post accidentally deleted.

Here are the fundamental problems with DC/WB films. They lack an overall direction, continuity, and consistent representation of the comic book characters.

DC's mode of operation is to decide to make a movie, find a director and tell them to go make a movie and hope it's presentable.

Marvel, while not perfect, has two guiding principles. You will make a movie within our established universe and you will present the characters as established by the comics since the 60s. The two exceptions being the Hulk reboot and Iron Man 3. The creative choices made by the IM3 director pretty much sealed the deal that Directors will not be allowed to freelance.

Batman Begins and Wonder Woman both represented the characters as they were developed by the comics. It's why we have yet to see a Superman film that accurately portrays the character as established by the comics. Every film to date has been an interpretation of the character by the director.

All the crap, including the mustache falls on the leadership of the DC/WB film division

I completely understand what you're saying, I even agree for the most part but I still prefer the way they're currently trying to do it, in that they need to let directors interpret the characters. That's the problem with their problematic movies like Justice League and Suicide Squad (even though I didn't hate either); they still dont want to commit to one way of handling their directors, leave them to it or rein them in. They can't have it both ways.
Again, I still prefer they leave them to it. The big-time guys they seem to want for every project have earned that right.

  We got some horribly cheesy Superman film's, two Tim Burton film's featuring Batman, the next two ridiculous Joel S. Film's, a creepy stalker snooze fest that is Superman Returns, and two horribly depressing Man of Steel film's that kill off Jimmy Olsen and Clark Kent on a whim. And a very underwhelming Justice League with really really bad special effects.
  For God's sake, then Third instalment of X-Men managed to de-age Prof.X and Magneto and that was a really bad Fox film and a much smaller budget, but they couldn't fix a mustache.

A recent example of this, which makes me worry a little bit for the Aquaman movie, is that apparently they have changed the script/character's relationship of King Nereus. In the comics, he wanted Mera for himself which causes the riff and war between he and Aquaman. In the movie, Mera is his daughter and he doesn't want Aquaman near her, or some such shit. I could write books about the hack job Snyder did to all the character changes from the comics, especially giving us a Superman who was petulant and destroyed a guy's semi because the guy pissed him off. Then ended the movie by crashing the General's spy drone to the ground, like a kid having a tantrum. Not my Superman.

And that's not going to happen any time soon, DC is ingrained within our culture, I'd argue that much more than even Marvel, which, btw, was in the brink of disappearing not so long ago, somthing that hasn't happened to DC, so its "monopoly" can change the same as it changed before (and don't forget how succesful has always been in movies, comics, and animation, Heck, I'd say even with toys, judging how popular they are)
And if you are just talking about the current state of movies, well, why are people talking about them after all this time? If they were truly irrelevant, they should have disappeared into oblivion long ago, just like many other movies, but alas, here we are still discussing about them!

      And I still disagree with you. People who liked the movies weren't so outnumbered. People dismiss this because it doesn't fit their narratives, but any site that shows audience's scores tend to be on the positive. Yeah, you may add that they "rigged" those numbers, but remember that people who didn't like the movie did it with the same passion and also voted on those sites.
      And secondly: no, not most people defending those movies were just fans of Snyder, but also of DC as a whole. Why must all people who liked the movies fall into that label? Many people here and in other sites (including me) have shown that we have followed DC for a long time, but it's funny because any time one defends Snyder he or she is automatically labelled a "snyderbot". Yeah, totally accurate.
      And last: no, they didn't even leave with Snyder. In fact, after all this JL catastrophe (that WB well deserves) we can see that there has been a big movement supporting him and his quasi-mythic cut. Just take a look at the tweets or instagram or whatever and see yourself how any time WB posts anything about JL they receive hundreds and hundreds of comments petitioning his cut (that in the end they achieve this is another thing entirely)
      So no, there are many people who enjoyed the movies (I just don't get why this is so difficult to grasp for many) and regardless of how the movies are percieved now, the brand is going strong for many other reasons and they won't stop producing movies

Wb wouldnt be in panic mode after bvs if most people loved his vision/movies, mos underperformed, bvs definitely underperformed with only 330m domestic. So it definitely doesnt show that most liked what was going on. Bvs audience score is like in the 60s which is bad, not to mention that the g.a dont even vote, they just watch the movie and move on(of course there's exceptions). Jl the movie you guys hate and claim to be whedons got a 86, what does this proves? Just look at the b.o numbers, snyders vision is a failure and i stand by what i say when i said that most didnt like it. The only thing you guys can mention is the Audience score, if the dceu was so successful as you claim, wb wouldnt try to change it and snyder would still be employed.

      I never said mos was a failure, you just made that up. I simply said that mos underperformed since it came out during the era when cbm were popular, and since hes such a big hero, we expected it to do more than doctor strange numbers, which it should've but it was divisive. Jl failed because of bvs, people weren't interested to see a sequel of a movie they hated, just look at its opening weekend, 93m is clearly a sign of lack of interest, but it had better legs than bvs.

      No one expected mos to hit a billion, maybe 800m. Bvs on the other hand, was definitely suppose to hit a billion, you have bats and supes and ww in a movie for the first time ever. The hype was incredible and it opened with a great 166m, all movies that opened with such a high number touched the billion mark, but it had a record breaking second weekend drop and it all fell apart due to bad word of mouth. Was it a flop? No. But it was definitely a failure, it only reached 870m because it had a great opening weekend, it opened with 166m domestically and ended with 330m...that is terrible for such an opening and magnitude of the movie no matter how much you deny it.

Were talking about b.o, not video sales, and its always good to win on both and not just rely on home video.

You say that MoS underperformed because of the time it was released, but then many other cbms underperformed too by those standards, as Iron Man 3 was the only one which earned as the Avengers (and undeservedly so, Winter Soldier was miles better). Again, Superman was never a BO monster and the numbers MoS got were perfectly fine.
      I agree that after BvS opening the possibility of the billion was there, but again it was people who decided that, and after all the critical reception it was going to be difficult. Glad to see we agree on the blown-out proportions of it. IMO the massive opening weekend just showed how hyped people was for that, and that was part of the debacle, more so than if the movie was good or bad. Millions went in with so many different perspectives that pleasing everyone was going to be a monumental task

      Mos was released in a era where cbm movies were popular and still are, i never said it needed to make a billion, and if it was better received, it would've made more. Mos b.o run was mediocre, but it had potential to hit the 800m mark.

      No, bvs reaching a billion was a guarantee, and not expectations. Any movie who opened with similar numbers made their way to the billion mark, even with bad reviews(transformers, except the last one). But the movie was so bad and disappointing, it wasnt entertaining at all, except for maybe 15 min total of the movie. It doesnt matter if millions went in with different perspectives, if the movie was any good, it wouldnt be a problem. Of course you cant please everyone, but you have to please the majority which it failed to do, there's no excuses for that mess of a movie.

      Jl underperformed because of displeased fans you say, well how did they get displeased? Because of bvs, jl is a direct sequel to a movie most didnt like. Ww was its own thing and wasnt related to bvs at all. Suicide squad was its own thing was well, both wasnt sequels to bvs and unrelated.

If the brand hadn't sold their movie rights, and later been bought by Disney, they coudl have actually disappeared as a brand. So no, it wasn't always as strong as it is today, and basically that's thanks to the almighy Disney's money.

      Movies are what everyone pays attention to. TV shows and cartoons don't shape the brands image in the eyes of the zeitgeist the way movies do.

      Oh but they do to a certain degree. I mean, Harley wouldn't even be a thing were it not for her popularity in Batman: The Animated series. And Cyborg would not likely be as popular to the point that he could become a member of the Justice League were it not for his popularity in Teen Titans either.

  Irrelevant would not be the way I would describe these films. The way I would describe them for the most part is that they are kind of directionless and are kind hurting the DC brand as a result of decisions made in the film and universe making process.

    I wouldn't have said directionless, at least not when they started, but when WB started to meddle more than it was advisable.
    But yeah, irrelevant is a kind of idiotic way to describe the movies or the brand. As I said before, the fact that people are still talking about them (both in positive and negative light) says a lot about the impact they have had. Even all the articles related to DC generate more traffic than Marvel! And until the Infinity War trailer, JL trailers were the most seen among all the youtube channels, even above of Ragnarok. That says a lot about people caring or not about the brand.
    But yeah, let's blow it out of proportions just like everything has been blown out before -_-

WB should've just planned for a few solo movies then gone with BvS to test the waters before jumping in with JL. Now they've wasted JK Simmons like Terminator Genisys, the Joker has mixed reactions from audiences, their Batman star doesn't want to be the Dark Knight anymore, both BvS and JL came in under expectations, and now WB/DC are starting to clean house and restructure which will cost them. Executives are more worried about their checks and bonuses rather than the quality of their products. Their whole system is a mess.

It’s a shame there’s so much talk of recasting already. One of the positives from the Marvel series is that they’ve kept the same group together for so many films, it really helps glue the whole thing together. Going to be a bit crappy seeing different actors play the roles every couple of films in the DC world 😕

  ah, your explanation and example are so profound. BvS was a fun movie and had a great tone. You could easily tell the parts where whedon chopped this up to make it more marvel'y. Sorry he ruined this film. If JL had stuck to a more BvS style with a longer run time it could have been great

They cut whole goddamn movie. They made JL for kids. This movie is so shallow and simple with plotholes. I don't blame Whedon or Snyder. It's WB fault. I'm starting afraid James Wan Aquaman and the rest of DCEU. WB: give directors some space.
