A $500 computer with free software shaved Henry Cavill better than 'Justice League' (video)

DeepFakes are getting a lot of attention lately. It's the process of using computer algorithms to swap faces within videos. People are putting celebrity faces into porn, which is why DeepFakes are getting a lot of press, but the software can be used for so much more than that.

Take for example one person at DeepFakes Club. They heard about Henry Cavill's mustache problem in Justice League and decided to see what they could do. "I used a $500 computer bought off Craigslist and free deepfakes software to teach an AI how to digitally remove Henry Cavil’s mustache in a variety of situations," the person said in a blog post.

The results are in the video above, and as you can see, the $500 computer did a pretty good job. Is it perfect? Absolutely not. But is it on par with (or perhaps even a little better) than what we got in Justice League, a movie with a $300 million dollar budget? You can certainly make that argument. In the Justice League scene in the video, the face swapping technique was used. They put Henry Cavill's real face on Superman's.

It's not bad, but are we really comparing the quality of a YouTube video (especially one at 720p) with a big budget film? It's not even 4K. Plus, the last comparison --of the movie itself-- looks kinda the same, isn't it?

  Of course not, but the fact they got that close is pretty remarkable.
  With the scene from the movie, they used the face swapping technology to put Henry Cavill's face on Superman. You can see that the results are the same (if not a little better) than the actual movie.

    cmon, you cannot compare the tons of pixels that need to be shaved and give texture from the original video. we were watching a theater 4k (or more)cut of the film. and no it does not improve at all with that pc

I don't even understand what was the point of putting that scene in the beginning. Didn't they know the terrible editing would do a lot more harm than good. I see no value added in that scene to be honest.

  I, a huge MoS and BvS fan, like the idea of the scene. But the execution was horrendous, due to that unfortunate face situation, as well as the weirdly highlighted suit and the annoying, fakey, cartoonish kids asking him questions.
  What they should’ve done was made the kids too short to get his face in the video.

    I think he more means the fake feeling of the acting in the scene - mostly from the kids. It feels too "set up" and stiff. So did the "phone camera view" effect.

    I did love the explanation of the S shape. I thought that was neat, and seeing him in footage while he’s dead is definitely a POTENTIALLY emotional idea (even though they really lacked emotional payoff later on).

  I understand that, but common where’s the complete arc. They could have shown that scene towards the end minus the kids and it would have worked out better. It ruined the entire Superman rebirth for me. I liked both BvS and Justice League, but found that scene very unnecessary and lazy.

  That's the thing. We can debate on if it looks better or worse, but the fact that it looks so close is incredible. AI is probably the future. People won't have to do this by hand. Computer algorithms will be smart enough to do it for them.

The $500 computer version is actually more impressive in shaving off that mustache. The first two look very good. Third was good too. Looks like they probably would've handled Cavill's face in JL better.
Smh. I want so much better for the cast and for the fans when it comes to Justice League. We waited too long for this film not to be amazing on every level.

Calling it an AI is a bit much, but yeah, results are clearly better.
