'Shazam' star Zachary Levi on how he put on 20lbs in a month

If you've seen Zachary Levi lately it's obvious that he put on some muscle for his big superhero role in Shazam. So much did he bulk up?

Levi was a guest on the latest episode of Michael Rosenbaum's podcast and revealed his workout routine that helped him put on 20 pounds in just over a month. Thanks to Collider for the transcript below:

Levi: I’m working out like 5, 6 days a week … Depends. Sometimes we’ll do two-a-days and then more off days, but typically we’ll do an hour-and-fifteen-minute sessions every day.
You’re about 215 now?
Levi: 220. Before I got the role, I was about 200 pounds. I’ve hovered around 200 pounds most of my adult life.
You’ve gained 20 pounds in a month?
Levi: Yeah, about a month and a half.
How many calories a day?
Levi: 3,700 calories, then with a bunch of other supplements like fish oil, Omega-3s …
What are you eating?
Levi: It’s pretty clean and lean.
Does someone make your food?
Levi: Oh yeah, I do meal delivery. It’s part of the job. They [DC / Warner Bros.] have been very good to me when it comes to taking care of this.

Yesterday, Warner Bros. released the official plot synopsis for Shazam and announced that filming is underway in Toronto. The movie is scheduled to be released on April 5, 2019.

20 pounds in just over a month? I may not know that much about bodybuilding... but that seems almost superhuman.
For comparison, it took Affleck almost an entire year to gain the same amount.

  Sure... but 20 pounds in just over a month? With your logic, you could justify him bulking 100 pounds in one week, because after all "it depends and everyone's different".
  What Zachary did is nothing short of superhuman. I would be in shock if he didn't take some sort of substance, one way or another.
  I have a couple of friends who are bodybuilders... All of them needed YEARS to bulk up 20-30 pounds. I don't care how good his trainers are. It's just too impressive to believe he did it naturally.

    Dont forget he had zero muscular mass, he wasnt fit at all. Once you put your body under these circumstance, your muscle grows faster and quickly. Body builders have to work 10 times as hard since their body are used to the struggle of workouts, their body is already built and whatever comes after is extra.

      I heard it was the exact opposite. People with no prior training experience / muscle tone have to work way harder to gain it. Those who were muscular once before, have muscle memory and re-gain their mass relatively quickly. That's why it took Chris Hemsworth / Evans months (almost a year) to gain their bodies back for Thor 1 and Cap 1, but for the sequels, they managed to do it a lot quicker.

      It depends on the body type also. Chris evans was already ripped before cap 1, all he did was body definition which i doubt it took almost a year, unless he was slacking hard and wasnt following daily routines. My first month of work out i gained 10 pounds of muscle, i was out of a job and a bit depressed and started to work out like crazy( 2 hours everyday) and i wasnt eating right also but i still managed to gain 10. Now im bot saying gaining 20 isn't hard and that its not a big accomplishments, but its far from impossible, especially with all the resources these guys have.

      They never stopped going to the gym, the workouts were just less extreme, and when it came close to those movies they went back to the gym on beast mode. When you look at people thats been working out all their lives you'll barely see a difference from what their body looked like 2 years ago or a few months ago. But the new guy who just started working out, you will see a significant difference after a few months...so by having all the resources and motivation, gaining 20 pounds in a month and a half is quite possible.

      Seems to me the evidence is pretty clear.
      Gaining muscle is easier if you've done it before. Since Zachery has no real history with bodybuilding, I'm calling it, the guy took substances. Frankly, I have no doubt about it. 20 pounds in a month? I just don't buy it.

      Oh yeah haha, I remember seeing Hemsworth in that Moby Dick movie (forget the name - saw it on a plane) and he was EMACIATED. Props to him for gaining much of that bulk back.
      Yeah, I also have my doubts about clean and lean, but I am not a nutritionist nor a bodybuilder so who knows.

Naturally speaking, with proper intense training combined with a strict proper nutrition, it is possible to put on pure clean muscle mass of roughy 20 lbs in 1 Year (So what Zack has done is impossible). 10 lbs the 2nd year, 5lbs the 3rd year, 2.5 lbs the 4th year.

The Law Of Diminishing Returns applies in bodybuilding as well. Pretty much after an intense 4 years of training and strict eating, gaining mass each year becomes so miniscule that it's basically pointless to bother to calculate. Though accumulated after an intense 15 years you'll look bigger than the 4 intense years, obviously lol.
Either way, there is no possible way that Zachary Levi is natural in order to put on clean and lean muscle mass of such size within just a month, let alone near a year (which is hard for even the first year elite training level athletes). I've managed to put on pure 20lbs of muscle, but that took me 1 year and a half (due to not that great food resources because I ain't rich, but I train hard and smart like a goddamn mvp).

  He never stated that he put on 20 pounds of muscle, he just stated that he put on 20 pounds, those are very different things. Putting on 20 pounds in a month on the other hand is very doable.

    Nevermind, I misread his statement as 20 lbs lean muscle mass as opposed to eating clean and lean.
    An issue here though is he states that he eats clean and lean. The only way he could've put on such an amount in a month is, he ate a hell load of clean and lean food therefore most of his mass is fat or he's on some substance. Those are scientifically and physiologically the only possible reasons to my knowledge.

It's regular human. Steroids are regular. And no fat! Affleck may just not have cheated, I can't even believe I'm saying that. It's wrong on a couple levels. Point is, the least lethal steroid is also the most popular 'mongst celebrities: clenbuterol. Horse breathing treatment. And clen keeps Fat off. In fact it's mostly used for cutting fat while keeping your gains. Not very deadly but has weird side effects. But what's Parkinson's in the scheme of things right?

It is superhuman. But actors use roids. Also, we don't know how much muscle mass he gained. Unless he did some ultra sound tests, he can't know for sure. I also don't think 20 lb is a lot on his frame. I'm sure he looks more "superheroy", but don't expect him to be on Cavill's level.
He'll also have a muscle suit.

Reading your comments i can tell you've never worked out before. With the level of training, supplementation, and nutrition these guys can get, that is entirely possible. Not sustainable, but possible for the first month especially.

  You're right. I don't work out and know very little about it, because I don't give af about this stuff. However, I do have quite a lot of friends that train, really, really, really hard. And they all say the same thing: the gains these actors get is realistically impossible. They all agree that they use roids.

  I doubt it, dude. These guys and gals go in the gym almost everyday, working out for hours on end, eating thousands of calories, etc. To think they use steroids is an unwise thought. If they used steroids, then why didn’t Affleck look buff in Justice League? He could’ve easily took them.

    Ben's physique in BvS wasn't that he was "ripped." He had the body of a bruiser/heavyweight. The abs he had during his close up were digitally added in post, but you can see his real physique here:

    He had far more time than Levi had to bulk up too as he had nearly a year. Not saying he didn't take steroids to help him along, but it's not unreasonable to think he couldn't get to looking like that without them.

    Why wouldn't they use steroids? I thought it's a well known fact that actors who are about to play superheroes, use roids to gain muscle faster. I don't know if you've ever tried to gain 20lb of solid muscle, but it takes a looooong time.

Its actually impossible. Anyone thats every worked out seriously knows this. Levi definitely used steroids. 20 pounds of muscle without steroids with heavy workouts at his age would take 4-5 months min. Bear witness to the power anabolics. Also, first time users have the advantage of best gains and keeps. Which explains this wow factor. Gains dip a little after first use.

      Probably just do a lot of dead-hangs for now; (Make sure to click, "See More".)

      -Get a firm grip
      -Point your toes down like a gymnast.
      -Try to feel as straight as you can, try stabilized.
      -Hang for as long as you want really (50 secs on and repeat the process could be a good start)
      ^After that;
      -Move your head forward, looking down. Try to feel like you're pushing the top of your neck down, you'll hear your spine being put back into place.
      ^^^^^Those all help elongate the spine, stretching it out.
      I used to have lower back pain due to never truly stretching all areas.
      But once I started dead-hanging and pushing down my feet keeping as straight as possible ( my lower-back was hurting like hell at this point) after awhile I felt relieved of pain, like my whole spine is fully functional and truly connected with each individual vertebrae. I felt fresh and then my lower-back pain was no more.
      So you can do all that until you feel comfortable doing weight-training.
      TLDR;
      Deadhanging;
      -Helps elongate the spine.
      -Puts your back into place.
      -Improves your posture
      -You feel functional.

      Cardio, lot's and lots of cardio with a high protein diet. You will want to be eating fairly cleanly too, to keep your diet in balance.
      You want to be jogging off areas made of concrete (because hard surfaces like foot-paths/roads etc are bad for your knees, no matter how good your shoes are. The human feet were made to walk/jog/run on grass, sand etc so go on an open-field somewhere).
      With jogging, I suggest starting doing at least a good 30 minutes and work your way up to an hour once you get better. Make sure you drink A LOT of Water before/ during & after.
      Once you've made good progress of jogging you can then start High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) Sprinting (This is the best and FASTEST way to reduce body-fat). ONLY do it once your body is ready to take on such a fast activity, otherwise you can injure yourself.
      Once you start the HIIT Sprinting give yourself about 90 secs rest each set of;
      100m - 90secs - 75m - 90s - 50m - 90s - 25m - 90 secs - 100m.
      Trying to go as hard as you can sprinting will burn fat like God Dayum, so go all out once you begin that.
      ALWAYS drink WATER. Oh and take some fish-oil & don't forget that high protein diet with clean healthy foods to keep that high protein diet in balance, otherwise you can harm your body.

      I've the exact opposite problem that Schuyler has.
      I'm over 6'2 (1.89 m tall) and barely weigh 70 kg, or 155 pounds. It's freaking embarrassing. Funny thing is, I eat a lot more than anyone in my family, yet I don't gain an ounce, even when I try. I guess my metabolism is just too fast.
      2 years ago, I was sick and lost around 10 kg in a week and a half. It took me over a year to get that all back. It's ridiculous.

      I know how you feel, in a way-ish. Except I'm 5'10 but I also have a fast metabolism. I mean it's hard to put on fat and hard to put on muscle, but when you do begin to put on muscle it looks good and lean. The trick is eating a surplus of nutritional foods whilst training smart and intense.
      If I can break down, "Aiming for the body you want to get somewhat near to" for any person with any metabolism level and any genetics status, in the most simple words it'll have to be;
      -How you train
      -How much you train
      -How smart you train
      -How much you eat
      -How good is the nutritional value of what you eat
      ^I feel like those factors sums up all what one needs to know, in my opinion.
      Given your height, 20lbs of pure muscle mass on you will look less than 20lbs of pure muscle mass on me due to the distribution of it on our frames. BUT the more mass you get for someone of your height (and taller) the better you'll appear than most. Just a food for thought.
      If you want any advice so I can lure you away from the mistakes I have done then be my guest. I've learnt a lot in the past couple years tbh.

      The thing is also, I really don't like traditional "working out" in the gym. But I love sport and doing physical things. I love indoor climbing (however, this costs a lot where I live) or what we call "bolderen" (I don't know the English translation). I love diving (both free diving and scuba) though this doesn't really require that much strength, it's more of a technical activity. But again, it's really expensive. Basically, I love anything that doesn't involve objects to work out with. I don't know if you've seen those Stephen Amell videos of him working out in some sort of acrobatic gym. But that's what I'd like to do. Not just "lifting weights" and whatnot.
      I do plan on gaining some mass one day... But right now, I'm just too busy. I'm hoping that in 3 years time, I'll have more time.

      I know what you mean man, I'm all about the aim for athleticism. I do bodybuilding only for aesthetic reasons, I powerlift for strength purposes, sprint for just being faster and I intend on doing gymnastics as I feel that'll complete me as an all-rounded athlete.
      Bolderen would be called rock-climbing I guess, the use of artificial small boulders to climb with no harness or rope.
      Yeah I've seen Stephen Amell workout. What he does is indoor parkour or freerunning when he throws that acrobatic flair into the mix. I want to do that but only after gymnastics so parkour would be much more easier for me.

      I'm from Belgium.
      I would love to have that great superhero body, don't get me wrong but... I just can't work out at the gym for the sole purpose of "looking good". If there were any reason for me to do it, it would be to increase my strength. I'm stronger than I look, which is about the only positive thing you could say about me. Because that still doesn't necessarily mean I'm strong compared to other guys my age / height. I would like to be stronger, but working out is just so boring to me :p
      I just don't have that drive. I want to do it "naturally" (through normal sports I mean), though I suppose that's just me being naive.
      I don't even want to be that big anyways. I just don't want to be as paper-thin as I am right now. My sister's boyfriend works out quite a lot and he's pretty fit, especially for his height (he's 5'6.5) and he tells me that I should eat even more. I don't even think that's possible. Obviously he said it's also about what you eat. But I do eat a lot of what bodybuilders say you should eat: rice, chicken, etc etc. I've always had very healthy meals. I just can't figure out as to why I am so thin.
      Especially compared to my family. Everyone in my family is pretty built. My father is very stocky and used to be quite strong (still is, for his age, I think). My younger brother easily weighs more than 80 kg and he's 5'10. He's weighed as much as 85 kg at times (185+ pounds). He's not fat, he's just built. Though he didn't get his body frame from my dad. He got it from my mom's side. All of her brothers are also, quite built and my brother has the exact same frame.
      The funny thing is, while my brother has much bigger arms than I have, I still beat him every time in arm-wrestling. He can't stand it, lol. My point is, if I look at my family on both sides, I would expect that their offsprings are all equally built and strong.
      Then there's me... The 6'2 skeleton in the family. Lol.

      To answer your question as, "why I am so thin?" despite what you eat, the answer would be, your fast-as-hell metabolism. You're not gonna be putting on any fat anytime soon. But you're also not gonna put any muscle on UNLESS your muscles undergo training which would damage the tissue and repair to become bigger.
      Because you and I have a fast metabolism, the best way I could describe how you're still thin (*it took me some time to figure out the answer*) it'll be with this construction building analogy;
      -Your nutrition is your building blocks, your solid bricks (*if you eat right*) or crappy pieces of wood (*If you eat McDonalds for building purposes haha*). The more bricks you eat (*surplus*) the bigger your house could be.
      -Both pieces of material can be used to build a House, a Home, but both may make your house look different.
      -You can continue bringing in (*continue eating food*) more, and more bricks to your construction site (*your body*) BUT you won't actually be building anything. Those bricks are just laying around, waiting for some machines to come around and then be put together, brick-by-brick, layer-by-layer.
      -Let's just say that Cement is Protein. The right amount of protein can help build your house, the wrong amount can harm your house's foundation (*your Kidney stones*).
      -Now construction begins (*putting on weight*) when the machines and tools come into play. (*using workout equipment to damage your muscles, then repair to which will then get bigger*).
      -The machines will help lay down your bricks (*nutrition*), covered with cement (*protein to help join everything together*) and brick-by-brick you'll create a foundation.
      -The machines being the most fastest and efficient way to build your house.
      -If you continue building your house properly with the right materials, your house can increase in size.
      -When you stop at the weight you're comfortable at, that's when your house becomes a Home.

Putting on 20 pounds does not mean he put on 20 pounds of lean muscle! I can guarantee you that's not what happen, not even if he was on a Deca Durabol and Winstrol cycle. Anybody can put on 20 pounds just by over eating for a month. I'm sure he put on some muscle mass as well but it sure as hell wasn't 20 pounds of lean muscle mass in a month.
