'Black Panther' beats Batman v Superman's record for most advanced ticket sales

In 2016, Batman v Superman passed The Dark Knight Rises and Avengers: Age of Ultron to become the biggest superhero movie of all time in terms of advanced ticket sales on Fandango. Now, that record has been broken.

Fandango announced today that Marvel's Black Panther is now their top-selling superhero movie of all time. Previous estimates had the movie opening to $120 million when it hits theaters on February 16th, but with the new record for advanced ticket sales maybe Black Panther will open closer to Batman v Superman's $166 million.

    It’s so true. It just doesn’t sit right with me and leaves me scratching my head... something just ain’t right with people in 2018. Fair enough that Marvel’s success in building a trustworthy brand is playing a role in this but like come on. People act like their decent movies are cinematic gifts hand crafted by god himself. Even the way the haters reacted to the majority of DC’s movies has just left me fed up with people. Like I can admit DC’s films are flawed but god damn they were decent movies. I’ll keep saying it, I think rating movies today is less about whether you rate a movie based on its quality but rather people rate movies based on what brand theyre loyal to and because Marvel has a huge cult like fanbase their movies are overrated. How is it that I can literally yawn at the idea of a Black Panther movie because he’s kind of an unappealing comic book character but half the world is so desperate to see a movie with this lame character that they went nuts over presale tickets. Like I just don’t get it, help me, help me to understand the appeal Marvel fanboys. I want to be apart of the biggest blockbuster franchise in the world but I just can’t see what anyone sees in these Marvel films. Not that I don’t find there’s anything good about them, but I just don’t see what makes them so special and apparently such a cut above the rest. I still see this current Marvel craze as Call of Duty syndrome.

      Another related issue. There are many arms of a movement across the country to actually raise funds through Kickstarter and other crowdsourcing sites to send underprivileged children to see "Black Panther". I am all for giving children an experience like that. The arts are very important, and this film will show children of color an important role model. But...why not solicit Disney/Marvel to actually provide complimentary tickets to these schools/families? Disney is HUGE and richer than a hundred Vaticans. Get the real money to support their fans and the fans to come. Then raise money to actually DO SOME GOOD for these kids. Education, music, food, medical etc. It kills me when people talk about sending these kids to a commercial film as if it's the single most humanitarian act of all time! And the Disney bottom line shoots up. Their numbers grow and the beat goes on. That company should be doing some good for the community. I shake my head.

      He wasn't being disrespectful, and it's not an inaccurate or negative descriptor. I have friends (and a wife) "of color" who use the word "color" in this context, and it's not offensive to them. Why should it be?
      The entirety of his post was humanitarian and compassionate, and that's the thing you chose to focus on, and tried to shame his character over it? Come on. :/

      Thank you, Rust. I was being completely compassionate and trying to open some eyes to channeling the power that we all have. If we can inspire Disney to give these kids tickets for free, then we are channeling a huge corporation toward doing dome good. I used to work in the theatre at the University of Hawai‘i. Often the production team would "paper" the audience. Giving away tickets to a) fill unsold seats and b) make the house look full. The valley next to our campus was home to a huge community of Micronesian folks, many of whom had never seen live theatre. I spoke with our faculty and arranged to not only provide tickets for the parents and children, but also to have them picked up and driven to the show. I was there the first night we did this and those children were blown away by the magic of the characters, light and music on stage. The theatre filled the seats and yet, in a small way, enriched these kids' lives. This was a children's play with a stage full of pirates. I remember one boy stood up and cheered with his arms up in the air - tears running down his face. If Disney/Marvel can do the same - albeit with a lot more funds and means - their public image glows and the fundraising efforts of all these well-meaning fans can help to bring even more relief to the sting of poverty. Thanks again for having my back.

      Sounds to me like you should be in a position to make something like this happen on a big scale. :) If only there were some clear way to wiggle into elbow-rubbing distance of Disney's big wigs and have them consider it seriously. lol

      If someone is actually offended by that, I would say they are being extremely hyper-sensitive and unfair.
      The man's intentions of goodwill and kindness are clear, and the context of what he is saying should be good enough to show that he is not discriminating negatively whatsoever - in even a remote sense.
      Further, if someone calls me a racial slur, I recognize that being offended really just gives them what they want. I have learned this over a span of years of being threatened, taunted, and physically beaten over my skin color. Many of my friends (of various racial heritages) have learned the same thing.
      So I don't give racism power over me. Instead of being hurt, I simply pity the people who try to hurt others' feelings over something as harmless as skin color.
      There are people out there doing real harm to others. This man is not doing that. It is unjust to rope him in with that lot.

      That's a pretty solid comparison: Call of Duty syndrome. Not that CoD or Marvel are bad, but the fan mentality and excessive rave behavior is similar.
      I mean, it's the flavor of the week, just like Nolan's Batman was before it, et cetera. It's just what's "in" now for any number of reasons. Mostly, it was simply fresh when society was getting bored of serious, dramatic superhero movies.
      Couple that with all the current social uproar over gender and race politics (a hefty amount of which I suspect has been stoked by the media for ratings, tragically driving good people apart over their genitalia and skin color), and bam, of course you sell a lot of tickets. lol
      Wonder Woman had some of that advantage, and probably would have sold as much or more if it simply had the Marvel logo on it instead of the DC one.
      Still, if these characters are successful, I'm happy for them. Especially Diana, whom I cherish dearly.
      It's just the reasons they are popular tend to be unfortunately rather shallow, and I'd hope for better from society than focusing on superficial things to determine their level of hype or sensation of quality from a film.
      I want Black Panther and Wonder Woman to be appreciated for their actual character content and their heroic choices, just as Martin Luther King dreamed...

      What I’m basically sick of, is people treating each and every new Marvel film that comes out like it’s an instant classic. There’s no way that one company can release 15+ films and nearly every one of them absolutely destroys Rotten Tomatoes if critics were actually being honest and critical. What I think has happened is that the majority of these critics just happen to becom Marvel fanboys as well along with the rest of the world and this is why you’re not seeing any critics take time to criticize Marvel for anything. I just remember the days when a “bad” movie actually felt like a genuinely bad movie. Batman & Robin is a great example a film that was fairly criticized. In 2018, I feel that the studios are much smarter and far less riskier in the sense that they understand the kind of comic book movies the audience wants now, they don’t want risky, campy super hero films like B&R and therefore we only get quality comic book movies now and I believe that to be true for the majority of what Marvel and DC have released since 2005 or even earlier with the original Spider-Man and X-men movies save for the odd film that was so painfully bland it didn’t really work like Fantastic Four and Green Lantern. But for some reason, DC is being criticized unfairly, in an extremely harsh way, almost as if the critics hold up each new DC film up under the microscope to try and find things whereas with Marvel they just sweep criticism under the rug and say move along. BvS, wasn’t perfect but it didn’t deserve the level of hate it got.
      Same with Man of Steel, and even the slightly underwhelming Justice League. It just seems funny to me that all these big DC films got shat on to no end, and they were released after Marvel
      Had well left a footprint in the comic book genre and built up a solid fanbase. TDK trilogy managed to wrap up just around the time Marvel was really starting to spread its wings and I think it just managed to slip under the radar. Had those films been released today in a post Marvel takeover world, I really don’t think they would’ve been as well received and I think ( TDKR especially) would’ve been torn to shreds by critics if it were released today. I say that as someone that’s not a big fan of TDK trilogy but as someone who can admit all the films in the trilogy are good quality films. I swear to Mike, I truly believe Marvel’s success and impact are having a direct impact on DC’s films being treated so harshly, and in such non-constructive, and unfair ways. It’s become much more about bias, fanboy war, brand loyalty than it is about just criticizing the movie based on how well made it is. If WB had released BvS in 1997 instead of Batman & Robin, I would’ve been god damn thrilled, but in 2016 we were supposed to believe that BvS is as poorly made of a film as Batman & Robin. Like how spoiled have we gotten when we’re at the point where we’re taking movies

      TDKR did catch some of the post-Avengers heat. It came out like 2 months after Avengers, so that's where this all started. People were hype on the new "superheroes are fun again!" candy train and overly annoyed at the slightest nitpick in any self-serious or non-Marvel comic book movie. Next year, MoS got it, and it only got more extreme from there.
      It's just like fashion. We're out of style now, but I guess the time for that style had it's day and we got to enjoy it. :P
      As for the double-standard, I had a fan tell me literally today to just ignore the stuff I don't like in the Marvel movies and just relax, roll with it, and take it for what it is -- so they'll let huge complaints slide for Marvel, but they aren't willing to hold that same standard for DC. lol
      The comparisons between BvS and B&R are stomach-turningly sinful. Anyone who says that is an outright troll, willfully hyperbolic, acidic, dishonest, and I won't dignify them with anything more than a block.

      You hit the nail on the head. I do remember feeling like DC had been upstaged and I was in college at the time and three of my friends from college were the dweebs that were hopping on the “fun and lighthearted is in, TDKR sucked, and Avengers was awesome” bandwagon. When I said TDKR dodged the bullet I mainly mean that the hate wasn’t quite as extreme at that time as it got from that point on but man it sure didn’t take long after that before the hate got extreme. But yeah you’re right. TDKR mostly got off the hook but you could see it starting with that film. There were memes going around about how 5 unknown heroes from Marvel destroyed Batman and all this other cringeworthy shit. Sometimes, I think Nolan’s films being so damn serious and long had a direct influence on the genre and fans heading in The opposite direction. Even though the films did well critically, I think in their wake they created an army of people that wanted to rebel
      Against everything Nolan’s films were about. And as sad as it is, Nolan’s style of comic book film kinda died out and that’s the legacy of how he impacted the genre. Not exactly what Nolan meant when he said he wanted to inspire people.

      When there's an imbalance in the Force, the universe engineers a counter-extreme to compensate. When the Sith take over with the Empire and the Dark side has dominance, Luke and the Rebels rise to meet them. When Luke wins and forms his own Jedi Academy, the Sith return because the Light side is now the one causing an imbalance. One always comes to kick the other off the throne when it gets too much power (like the League of Shadows in Batman Begins! :P).
      Maybe we need to learn from the extremism and go for a variety approach instead of having one steady tone all the time in each franchise. This will create balance in a way.
      I actually do like (some of) Marvel's Phase One stuff that was at least a little more serious. Iron Man was actually an impressive example of finding a middle-ground in terms of being both funny and serious.

It had class, great acting, great script, characters you care about, emotion, drama, humor that didn’t feel forced, strong themes and a positive overall message.       I think it is largely because Marvel figured out the perfect formula for mass success and appeal. Whether or not said formula is genuinely "great" is of course where the debate begins. But the fact is it works and it has lead to consistent success for 10 years , and yes, by now people have developed a strong loyalty to the franchise because of this. A lot of MCU fans don't read comics. They are just super invested in the cinematic universe. They love the actors and the characters being portrayed on screen. They built from the ground up and slowly worked to up to becoming the juggernaut they are now. Where no matter what it is, if it has Marvel's name on it, people will go see it. A lot of folks don't even realize that there even is another major comic book company(DC). They just think everything that is "comic book" is marvel. They essentially created a brand. Taking characters many did not know and gradually boosted them to superstardom. A lot of people have literally grown up with this franchise(I would have too if I had been more interested in it throughout the years). So because of this, its very special to many. Its highly commendable, what marvel has accomplished.
      I can sort of relate to what you are saying. My frustration with the MCU started back with the very first Avengers movie. I thought I was crazy because everyone was acting as though it was the greatest thing ever conceived but I honestly thought it was just okay. You can't say such things without being labeled a DC fanboy though so I would say it is worth mentioning that at the time, I was literally just starting to get into comics and I had literally zero bias. They were all just superheroes to me. But for the life of me I genuinely could not understand what people thought was so great about it. The ONE thing that probably influenced my perception of the film was The Dark Knight, which, like everyone else, left me mindblown. After seeing that film my whole perception of what a CBM could be was just blown out the window. But aside from that, from a largely unbiased standpoint, I thought the jokes were lame, i didn't think Loki was a very good villain, and the story was very simple. Thus this is what lead me to take the path that I did in becoming more interested in DC than marvel. The Nolan movies lead me to the Arkham games, the games lead me to the comics and animation, and i gradually expanded off of batman from there. Not to say there aren't any MCU movies I liked. Spiderman Homecoming is probably my favorite(likely because I love Spider man). I really dug GOTG and Winter Soldier is imo probably the best movie in the MCU. Iron Man 1 is also a classic. What it ultimately comes down to though is that the characters simply do not interest me as much. There is nothing wrong with that. People have preferences. Sometimes people act like if you love one brand you have to love all the brands and ALL the characters. Thats just silly honestly. Again, its just personal preference. If Marvel movies don't work for you, there really is nothing wrong with that.

      Agreed Avengers was not my cup of tea either just felt severely underwhelming when I saw it compared to what everyone was saying about it at the time. It’s part of the reason why my expectations for JL were always so low. I assumed WB would be sticking close to an Avengers type formula, and turns out I wasn’t wrong.

      Glad to see a MoS fan! I wish more people got that movie, or at least enjoyed it. It seems like everyone was so distracted by Superman being "too serious" that they missed getting into the actual the movie. Such a shame. :'(

      I never found Superman too serious in MoS. I found him to be heroic, and he had a little class by not acting like a comedian while the world engine was pummeling citizens and leveling a city unlike some heroes I know. Just because a hero isn’t cracking jokes every 5 seconds doesn’t mean that they are “too serious” it means they’re normal. Like that’s the Crap I’m talking about right there. The spoiled morons in this generation wrote off a great film like MoS because “Superman didn’t smile enough” like holy man talk about spoiled little brats. If people want to go backwards and return to the days of campy Christopher Reeve Superman films then please count me out. I happen to like that films have come a long way since then as much as I enjoy Superman: The Movie.

JL, was a lighter film, so I could handle Supes wise cracks in it. As long as they don’t make him do a full on Christopher Reeve impression in his next film I should be ok.

      I dunno, Steppenwolf seemed pretty threatening when he was savaging the Amazons at the beginning.
      It kills me that they dropped that tone in the middle of the movie and left Steppenwolf's character in the mud somewhere.

      Here’s another thing we disagree on. For me, super hero team up films should always be the fun, lighter hearted ones. Because there are so many characters, it’d be hard to do them all justice and deliver an emotional impact with a serious tone. I think seeing Them take on a threat, and have fun doing it is the best route to go for Justice League or Avengers. Doing a more serious realistic film for a character like Superman in his own solo film works because a) Superman mythos just lends itself well to that epic kind of story and b) because you’re afforded enough time and room to breathe when you only have one hero in the film. It allows for more serious drama when you’re able to flesh out the main character cause they’ve got a little

      I didn't want JL to be 100% serious. I mostly just wanted the threat to be.
      I loved the way they used the Flash's interactions with the other Leaguers as comic relief. Clever writing and lovable performances. He and the other actors bounced off of each other so well!
      There's also the matter of Batman and Superman behaving oddly goofily in situations you would think they of all heroes would take more seriously.
      That's really it. It should be fun, but it should also know when to be serious.

      I think everyone would be happy with that. Why they would stray from that path in the first place, even in a more lighthearted movie, is beyond me.

      Doubt it. They wouldn’t have had the kind of control to make a film like that after BvS disappointment. If Zack still had full creative control I’m sure he would’ve set out to make a film like that, but I doubt his cut of the film was super deep. He had too many characters to juggle. At best, it would’ve had slightly more depth without WB controlling him but definitely wouldn’t have been a BvS type fIlm.

      They could’ve and the fact that they didn’t reuse any of Zimmer’s epic MoS score was criminal. It totally made the vibe of the Lois&Clark scenes feel disconnected from the previous two films. Have to say, from what was there tho, I enjoyed Henry’s performance. But I agree, it could’ve been much better and a lot more screen time for Superman would’ve been nice. I was just personally happy that he wasn’t as dead serious as he was in BvS. BvS is the one DC film where I somewhat agree with the complaint that Superman was too serious. He looked like he was deeply confused, or about to break out in tears in every single scene in BvS. It definitely needed a little bit more balance. But I did not have his issue with him at all in MoS. MOS was my favourite depiction of his Superman so far. Then it’s JL, then BvS.

      There was zero natural development or progression in the character to that point. He acted completely out of character from what we’ve seen so far in the DCEU with a constant, inappropriate forced smile, and jokes that have no place being in the middle of a fight to save the world. The final battle felt like it had no stakes.

      That’s not really Superman’s fault tho. Sounds like you have an issue with the entire tone of the film. If the tone of the film is light, then there may as well be jokes and cheesiness. If Superman had acted this way during MoS’ final battle it would’ve felt out of place and wrong because that battle was handled much more seriously.

      I dunno, I liked the little secret smile that creeps to his lips when Lois lets go of her terrorist captor's arm and looks confidently to Clark to kick his ass and save her. haha :)
      I also adore the scene after that when he shows up to the apartment with flowers for her while she's in the bath. He's so happy to see her, like a big teddy bear, and he consoles her worries and even tries to cheer her up by jumping in the bath with his clothes on. lol
      The "You are my world." moment is completely beautiful to me. I love the way he smiles to her even though he's so exhausted from the rough night he's been through. It looks so genuine and sincere. He's found his way again after feeling lost, and he makes sure he confidently tells Lois what she means to him. Even in the face of sacrificing himself, he leaves her with a smile.
      For the times he is serious and confused, I feel like it fits the story. I think it's okay to have fun stories sometimes and serious stories other times, and I don't think every Superman movie needs to have a certain ratio of both to be balanced. I think Clark should simply react appropriately to the challenge he's facing, and he totally did in BvS.
      I own a number of serious Superman comics, and a (smaller) number of more lighthearted ones. It's nice to shake things up tonally sometimes.
      Or you could also view it kind of like the 90s cartoon, where some episodes were serious, and some less so. :)

      Yeah, exactly! You have to view it as an arc of growth. He's earning that symbol on his chest and making it mean something through discovering how to be the best hero he can be.
      It's not easy, and the way is not always clear, but that's what makes persevering through the hard times important and heroic. The challenge of the hero makes it real, and that makes it relatable to our lives in a way.
      It's like The Dark Knight, when Harvey says, "The night is always darkest just before the dawn."
      BvS was the night for Superman, and JL was the dawn. :)
      I just wish the transition was a little smoother. If only Zack got to finish polishing that message as he intended...

I have a real love/hate relationship with TDK trilogy so I just try to not think about the trilogy. Just easier they way.

      Its because everytime theres a black lead (or women)in a movie and it becomes a success, people are always takes its credits away by simply saying it was a success due to it having a black lead or wtv, or that if a minority gets a role, he didnt deserve it and was simply given that role due to his or her skin color.       I'm absolutely happy T'Challa is getting his time in the light. Trust me. :) Chadwick Boseman kicked ass in Civil War, and I'm ready for a movie focused on him.
      I just wish people appreciated black heroes for their character, and for their heroic choices. Martin Luther King said he dreamed of a day where people would be judged for those things, and not simply for the color of their skin.
      Similarly, I don't want Wonder Woman's actual qualities to be overlooked just because everyone's focused on her being a girl.
      Diana is such an amazing person, with so many important lessons to teach our society today about how we treat each other, and about doing the right thing in hard situations. That's what should matter, but people just get excited over her gender and want to see a girl beating dudes up.
      I also wonder where the excitement was for Blade when Wesley Snipes was dicing up those vampires. Loved him in those movies, but no one really talked about them. Funny, huh?
      The major difference I see between now and when Blade came out is the social/political climate. Race is a hot topic right now, and it wasn't as much then.
      At least hopefully that means we'll see Blade again soon... and a number of other black characters who deserve to be in movies. John Stewart/Green Lantern, more Cyborg, Kid Flash, Spawn reboot, Storm deserves a solo movie, etc, etc. :)

      One of the reasons I really liked Wonder Woman was how they handled the feminist aspects. The movie wasn’t about that, it just let itself be that while telling a genuine story with a great character and a compelling theme about exploring the moral nature of humanity.

      Wonder Woman was the epitome of girl power in cinema, in my opinion. They did it so right. I feel incredibly lucky we didn't get some hammy schlock. It's a fair thing to have been worried about (as we saw in Ghostbusters). lol

      I am not talking about skin color. Bane grew up in a fictional country known as Santa Prisca that mostly holds Spanish as it's native language. Bane's father, King Snake, was British as for his mother was a rebel native of Santa Prisca. So Bane is actually half Hispanic and half British. His native language is Spanish, as for the other languages were learned by reading from books or taught by teachers within the prison that Bane grew up in. Because of Bane growing up in a Hispanic culture, it is common for Bane to hold a strong foreign accent when speaking any other language.

      Anyway, Batman: Much as I don't need Christian Bale to wear grey pajamas instead of black rubber, or dye his hair black from brown, or else he's "not Batman", I don't need Bane to say a couple words in Spanish to check some kind of superficial box that makes him Bane.
      He was Bane with or without it, and he always will be in any iteration. We don't know his origin clearly in this version, so the ambiguity leaves it so that you can fill in the blank yourself if you so choose.
      The character itself is more than a handful of gimmicky cliches. Frankly, I thought ditching the Luchador motif in favor of a terrorist look was a move away from what would have appeared corny in live action, so I consider it a wise improvement. I feel the same way about the changes they made to the Joker, so it has nothing to do with race and everything to do with trying to keep it classy and serious.
      Of course he doesn't have a thick Spanish accent, but he also had a different story. In this case, his accent sounded to me to be a strange unique accent that was a blend of things, leaning on British (as his father was in the comics, and close to Liam Neeson's slight Irish accent as Ra's, whom he is following in the footsteps of vigorously). It made sense in context to me, and it's certainly nothing close to an attack on Hispanic people.
      The tenants of Bane are his cunning, his goals, his intelligence, and his behavior. They checked those boxes pretty strongly. Considering that, and that in the comics, he looks pretty much white, I think we can still call this a reasonable Bane adaptation whether or not he has the kind of accent you wanted to make him seem marginally less white ...in voice only.
      To me, a stereotypical accent (which not all South American citizens possess, again) doesn't really seem like a substantial thing to make a big stink over. For the record, there were brief times where he did sound a little typical Brazilian, like segments of the "I didn't see the light until I was already a man" scene.
      I'm more upset that we didn't get more of his backstory to sympathize with him or understand his world view. That's a meaningful aspect of his character.

      This almost put me to sleep. What it did do though, thank you very much, is prove my point. You pointed out, extensively, that Nolan took his own liberties and changed the characters and their history. In regards to Bane, as you helped me illustrate he removed all signs of his Spanish heritage. Including, as you reminded me, even down to his Luchador motif. That was called White Washing.
      What I clearly pointed out in the other thread was that Nolan's movie as a whole was White Bread. I don't find that term racist btw, especially when comparing to such epitaghs as the "N" word. The spotlight really shines though on the one character that was hispanic in history, and he took the liberty of erasing its heritage, thus a mostly White Bread cast. This is nothing new in Hollywood. I am not blaming Nolan. I love his films, love him as a director and I loved the Batman trilogy. But you have to call a spade a spade, else you are part of the problem.

      In terms of "white washing", that implies that his specific intention was to actively rub out Bane's Spanish heritage because it's Spanish and he wanted him to be white.

      I find it infinitely more likely that he just had a specific story to tell that didn't necessitate a detailed backstory or race for Bane, and having worked with Tom Hardy on Inception, he discovered him to be a kick-ass fit for his spin on Bane's body language and mentality, completely regardless of his race.
      This whole idea of necessitating a certain quota is met for such and such ratio of characters to be this color or that color is sad to me. Why should we shoehorn a black actress into Catwoman's costume when Anne Hathaway presented the kind of character they were going for? Just for the sake of saying "Hey, look how progressive we are everyone! We have a black person!"? That just feels so desperate and fake to me, and it's the wrong reason to cast a character. It's just shallow pandering, and that feels patronizing.
      There are organic ways to incorporate non-white actors into these movies, but race really shouldn't be the focus over the actor fitting the character.
      An example: Dean Cain is part Japanese, and his eyes show it, but he is such a crazy good fit for Superman that it never crosses your mind. He looks and acts damn close to Superman, and acted the part wonderfully for the kind of show he was in.
      I feel the same way about Tom Hardy. He embodies Bane extremely well, with or without a Spanish accent.
      As far as "taking liberties away from the comics" goes, comics have been doing that to themselves for nearly a century now, and no one has minded for the most part. :P (I do mind what they've done to Harley, but c'est la vie. Off-topic.)
      I like creative freedom. It gives us new takes on things, keeps things fresh, and can often improve on things. In Nolan's case, I think he very much improved a lot of things in a classy, layered way. Bane is one of those things, even if I did want to see Santa Prisca, etc.
      I'm not saying I think Bane necessarily shouldn't have a Spanish accent mind you, because I would have enjoyed it if Hardy sounded more like that, I just don't think it's this huge deal that you seem to. It is not crucial to his character, and Tom does such a great job that I don't care what his accent is. That's a drop in the ocean of the fuller context of the character; a nitpick.
      Here's a question I have for you: You said this isn't about skin color, but your problem with Bane is whitewashing. Are you saying that white people from Spanish countries (like Bane) don't count as white because of... their accent?
      I mean, the term 'whitewashing' intentionally specifies skin color, and the character has historically been depicted with white skin for the most part (barring deviations from the original, which, again, no one minded :P). A little confusing.
      This is why focusing on race is silly. There are dark-skinned people in India. There are tan people in America. There are white people in Brazil. Who gives a damn? We're all people.
      What you seem to care about here is not Bane's race, but an aspect of his (presumed) culture, but you're calling it race.
      Race and culture are not the same thing. It would be like saying everyone in Pakistan is Muslim. What if they're Atheist? We shouldn't generalize people like that; we shouldn't conflate race, religion, culture, or geographical happenstance with each other universally. It's not fair or realistic.

  The average is very close, and for now, DC is above domestically by about 10 million, I expect that will change in the coming weeks. Worldwide, Marvel is way ahead thanks in no small part to justice league, on doing a lot of what wonder woman did. With only aquaman coming out this year, Marvel will get way ahead, it may take the wonder woman sequel for DC to catch up, if they can. With avengers three and four, I think that will not be happening. Their average will soon be over 800 mill worldwide. Man justice league messed things up! And I'm not even choosing sides, but I liked it when they were close.

Honest short rant:
You may not enjoy MCU films, but you have to appreciate how close to the actual comic books they are. Not at all close to any of Marvel's great arcs (they may try but you'll never see them pull off "Infinity Gauntlet" with near the same magnitude - see MCU's Civil War. And as expected, since cinema and comic books are very different medias) but certainly very close to some monthly title you probably read sometime in your life. And honestly that's fine by me.

Most of their movies may seem mediocre but still manage to be entertaining, have a great, tight story and great technical aspects most of the time. Note that I'm a lot more passionate about DC than I am about Marvel (always have been), so maybe that's why I can set the bar a little lower for the latter, but sincerely... I think I would set it lower for DC as well if that meant getting entertaining movies that throwback to my childhood accurately instead of the stupid and unbalanced messes that we got from the DCEU (for the most part).

So as controversial as this may be, I believe Marvel very much deserves the continuously earned praise and success. Hopefully DC can achieve even greater things in the not so distant future, because that's how it should be: a competitive race where one's always ahead in order to push the other to pick up their pace (although Marvel should slow down a little since DC apparently fell down or something).

I would have to disagree. The MCU films started off as being "close" to the comics during Phase 1, but now it's clear that they're distancing themselves from the comics as they enter another phase. Ragnarok was Ragnarok in name only, Cap3 didn't deserve the "Civil War" title.
The stories aren't really tight when you actually look at them. GoTG 2 and Thor 3 were both praised and criticized for having no story for the majority of their runtime. Ant-Man is proudly breaking the rules it has set up. IM 3 and AoU had beyond stupid stories. Even the first Avengers has been noted to have a basic story.

Like I said, they'll never be able to reproduce great arcs like this in the movies, but that doesn't mean it isn't close to the comics. In my opinion most of their movies a lot of the times look like they were ripped straight out of the comics (some cool monthly filler book in between events? Yes. But still, good books). Would I like to see proper Planet Hulk in full live action glory? Hell yes! But that's certainly not achievable so I won't be the one to complain when we get a story that, while not as big and well detailed like the original, has a lot of the cool elements that made me read Planet Hulk in the first place!
  About the stories: with tight I meant they usually don't lack cohesiveness and coherence. And my bad when I said they were great, that wasn't a good word. "Simple" on the other hand (as you described) is actually a much better word to characterize them. So yes, very simple but well written stories.

      Yep, I agree. Still very entertaining for someone who loves these characters though - those who overlook the fact that they're "cotton candy", obviously, like I did. You should do that too, Schuyler, take them for what they are and you'll probably be able to enjoy them more. They're not extraordinary by any means, but they can still be nice love letters to those fans that came from the comics.
      Please note that I'm not saying I love their way of doing or anything, I just find it better to enjoy the good parts of what they're doing since that's what they're doing anyways... If that makes any sense.

      I try. I don't go to see the films to hate. I want to enjoy them, but the humor placement is what kills me ever single time. GotG 2 was the last time I enjoyed an MCU story....until it pissed me off during the Ego fight. You have Peter fighting the one man who gave him the kind of fatherly love that he's been longing for This should be tearing him up inside, but someone thought it would be a good idea to do the Pac-Man thing.
      And Yondu's arc made me gag. I knew they were trying to make us feel bad for him, even though in the first film, he was okay with Peter deciding to split off. And also in GoTG 1, we never hear any mentions about the other Ravagers, so it makes no sense to not only bring up them up now but also paint them as them as these thieves with ethics. They're called "Ravagers". Ravager basically means "laying to waste". These guys should be bloodthirsty space pirates.

I liked Yondu's arc though. It would've been better had they planned it since the first, but his death still managed to be an impactful moment in my opinion.

      I see the movie version of Star Lord as more complex than that. His sense of humor is kind of a shield, and also the rebellious way he's expressing himself to his father.
      I figured he was all mixed up inside, and he lashed out in a way that was true to his personality, which was not just humor, but also cheeky spunk in the face of the thing troubling him or obstructing him.
      The Pac-Man thing worked for me in that sense (at least, that's how I took it), and also because I thought it was genuinely clever and funny. lol :x

      Well, I don't recall them spelling it out or anything, so I don't pretend to have evidence of this being the absolute definitive unquestionable intention.
      It's my own personal figuring. Full admission of assuming. :) Not that I think assuming is an unfair way to interpret something -- in fact, I think it's fine to leave things for the viewer to assume, personally. I actually prefer using contextual deduction to having things over-explained. A little classier that way.
      It seems like most of the internet thinks that's a film crime, though. lol
      If I had to scratch up some kind of evidence, I guess I'd say I know a tiny bit about James Gunn's background and world view from his personal social media posts, so it strikes me as the kind of character quirk he'd give him, considering that. Cool guy. :)

      Other than the highlights, I couldn't tell you very much I found memorable about most of the films - even the more serious ones (they wind up just being flat and dry, like The First Avenger). The memorable material is mostly just some good jokes here and there, or strong performances from a few actors.
      Oppositely, I can practically recite the entirety of dialogue in any of Burton or Nolan's Batman movies, or Snyder's two DC movies. I can vividly remember how the feeling of flying swept over me when Superman blasts off with a smile from the snow to that music in Man of Steel, or the scene where he steps out of the ship in his suit for the first time with the cape blowing majestically around him -- or how torn I felt when he was struggling with whether or not to save his father. Etc, etc.
      Similarly, I remember almost crying to the scene from Donner's first Superman where he's flying Lois into the night sky with John William's romantic score. It carried my little imagination away. I still tear up watching that scene today. Magic. :)
      I'm waiting for special moments like that from Marvel - moments that make you really feel it. Like it means something, or inspires you. Yondu's death is probably the closest they've gotten so far for me.

      I can remember the joy I felt when I had watched Iron Man 1 and Avengers for the first time each. Even The Incredible Hulk made feel extremely sad and happy when Bruce and Betty reunite; Betty was freaking desperate to hold Bruce because she was afraid that he may disappear again.
      Even the others films made me laugh with their wit and jokes, but that laughter has turned into anger now. Like I keep telling people, what makes me mad about MCU films nowadays is their joke placements.

      The Incredible Hulk is one of my favorite MCU movies. Super underrated, great acting. Watch it again if you haven't recently, man.
      I mean, I say this with a bias as a huge fan of the 70s Bill Bixby show moreso than the comics... :P
      It has the same problem JL has, where you can clearly tell Marvel yanked the rug out from Edward Norton and the vision he and the director (who was an inspired choice, and I love how he depicted Bruce Banner on the run) had for telling Banner's story in favor of popcorn action sequences and less tension/character development in the writing.
      Wish they'd have stayed out of Norton's way -- even though he was a little bratty about it, I can understand his frustration, and respect that he even cared so much. The Hulk could have gone somewhere really special and memorable in his hands.
      Alas... At least Ruffalo's Hulk is a blast, and they did get to do a teeny bit with his character depth in the first Avengers. :)
      I pretty much relate to everything you said here, though I maybe wasn't as crazy about Avengers as everyone else. I wanted it to feel a little more meaty and important, with more character drama between Thor and Loki at the very least.
      Iron Man (still in my Top 5 MCU) and Hulk were much stronger stories to me.

I agree. It's healthy competition. I'm pretty sure the MCU is what gave DC the kick in the butt to start making movies themselves anyway, so that's an upside. And I love both DC and Marvel movies, even though I don't read Marvel.

  Without Donner's Superman and Nolan and Burton's respective Batman films setting the stage and making a serious crack at superhero movies a popular thing, we wouldn't have the MCU.
  Credit also goes to other path-pavers like Fox's X-Men franchise and Sony's Spider-Man.

    Oops, guess I didn't phrase that properly. I meant that Marvel was (most likely) DC's inspiration to do a series of connected movies like the MCU has going right now, not just one shot trilogies, but an interconnected universe.
    And yeah, DC has had better movies than Marvel for a long time before hand. Like you said, without the Nolon and Donner series the MCU wouldn't exist either. Healthy competition is good for the audience, because it makes both parties want to make better movies.

  Yep. Marvel has been putting out pretty shitty work when it comes to comics at the moment while DC (apart from a few titles) has been doing really well since rebirth (before that too, but better after in my opinion) and it goes to show how occasional this things are. Marvel may be killing it right now in the cinemas but the MCU won't last forever and neither will the DCEU.

    Any time someone reminds me of Marvel's comics in the last several years, I wanna bash my head on something in frustration.
    I've liked a couple of X-Men and Thor arcs, but Spidey, my bread and butter since I was a little kid, has been really letting me down and pissing me off. :(
    This is the stuff that kids today who love the MCU movies will be reading. Heartbreaking!

Add to that Homecoming, which was one of the few MCU movies that failed to make reminisce about the character. There was something off about it, while they clearly understood a lot of what they had to do, they still messed up some things that ruined the experience to me.
      About X-Men: I stopped reading them over a year ago so I don't really know how they're doing at this moment but man... They use to have something about them that they apparently lost. In their prime they had some fucking brilliant and heartfelt stories that really set them apart. If the MCU really decides to go forward with them they'll definitely get the looks and most interactions right (since they've done consistently good when it comes to these things) but I doubt they'll touch on the themes an X-Men comic would.

      Homecoming had some problems for me, too... but the stuff I like, I like that stuff so much that I sorta forgive the problems.
      Honestly though, despite loving enough aspects of the movie to have a good time, I also feel kind of deflated as a Spidey fan thinking about it.
      There was something special about the Spidey solo movies that feels watered down by being tied in to the MCU so heavily. It's a hard thing to explain.

Well said, worth remembering Marvel had to earn all this. They started out with B and C list heroes but somehow made the likes of Iron Man, Cap and Thor A-List heroes and characters little kids would rather be then heroes like Batman or Spider-Man, Marvel may not shake things up as much as i wish they would but there's no doubt i know i'm going to enjoy the film going in.

Again thanks Mr.Snyder for ruining DC & burning it to the ground. That's what happens when you have a good team & director who make films with great & coherent story with plan & not a green background CGI meh with Martha scene.
Not so long ago Batman was the first superhero on google trend if you searched & he was the most famous & profitable one but now after destroying him in Snyder-verse with sentence like "Do you bleed " (LMAO at that tenseness), General audience like & know newbie Characters like Black Panther more than Batman & don't even make me talk about Spiderman or Ironman.

Do you really think Black Panther isn't going to be CGI heavy? All of Marvel's movies are.
There's nothing wrong with CGI. It helps superhero movies accomplish what they need to visually.
"Do you bleed?" actually really caught on as a popular quote. Half the movie's word-of-mouth advertising came from people excitedly repeating that part of the trailer. It's all over the fanart scene, and on plenty of fan-made t-shirts. That sentence did not "destroy Batman". People loved it. lol

This is all a little misleading. These numbers are just Fandango sales, not all advanced ticket sales. Black Panther may very well have that record, but we can't say it for sure based on only Fandango's numbers. I pre-order directly from the theater, for like 4 different chains. Who uses Fandango? Fandango sucks.

I loved Chadwick Boseman's version of T'Challa in Civil War, so I'm going to go see it for at least that alone. The trailers haven't really hyped me (like, at all), but he's just so awesome that I want more of him on screen, and I'm excited to see him get the spotlight this time. :)

I honestly never knew who black panther was until his appearance in the captain america movie. The welcoming and fight scene for him was spot on, and ever since then I was hyped to see a black panther movie.

However, what bugs me about the black panther story was how there can exist a literal magical sci-fi city and the amount of typical crappy marvel CGI.
