on 'Nightwing' director Chris McKay promises movie update around Valentine's Day

Last December, Nightwing director Chris McKay told fans that he would be able to share news about the movie around February, and now he's narrowed it down even further.

Today on Twitter, McKay said that it's still too early for any kind of casting announcements, but he should have an update about "where everything is" with the first Nightwing movie around Valentine's Day next month. And yes, he'll be able to share that news with all of us as well!

Valentine's Day is February 14th, so make sure you check Batman News around then. I'll have the Nightwing update posted as soon as McKay reveals it.

    You had to use the New 52 version of Nightwing for the post pic, UGH! Blasphemy!

    Can't wait for this. The actor has to fill a great backside for this part.

      i actually like the New 52 costume the most except for the red. If it was blue it would be perfect imo

            thats hardly too much black. If it was all black then ya it would be boring and it would lack identity. But its not. It has a giant blue emblem on the body. Thats enough in my opinion. Generally I prefer more simplicity with colors. Especially with darker characters. I don't need any gold around the Bat symbol or even a gold belt. Black and gray is perfect.

            The emblem isn't always giant. Recently in the Nightwing series, the blue emblem has been very minimal and made the suit look boring to me. He looks better in Titans. I think the best mask he's ever had was in the New 52 when it was black, but it had a little red right around the eyes.

            Batman has a lot of gray and sometimes yellow. Black Panther most definitely has a boring costume.

            The blue mask is best, imo. Every other Superhero wears a black mask or cowl. It sets him apart.

            For me, it’s about practicality, and having a blue mask on top of having blue on the suit is a little too much, I think. Keeping it minimalistic is more realistic.

    I hope they release some sort of information about the story. I'd like to know what source material they are using for the movie.

        i feel like the notion that they only base things off of the new 52 is false. I have seen inspiration taken from across all eras of DC in the DCEU. David Sandberg even recently stated that Billy Batson will not be based on the new 52 version

    That Ben Afflecks Batman will Star in it and it will be the last time we’ll see Ben and the Nightwing from now is the new Batman.

    I wonder if they'll address Gordan's line change in JL where in the trailers, he said "It's good to see you playing well with others again.", but in the theatrical cut he doesn't say "again".

      it doesn't really matter since taking out "again" doesn't exactly negate anything

      Actors do multiple takes, and it's very possible that Simmons just didn't say the word "again" in the take they decided to use for the movie. Or they could've just removed it to save time (every second counts when you have a 2 hour mandate).

      I truly think fans are just looking too far into that. It likely means nothing, story wise.

    Providing they aren't too bothered about age i would say Ben Barnes could make a good Grayson, he's 36 but he could pass for a few years younger. Someone younger? May hate me for saying this but Zac Efron could also make a decent Grayson as well, he's actually a pretty decent actor and has that pretty boy look what Dick should have and easily has the body you would expect of him.

      He'd be great. But considering he's already 36...he might be a little long in the tooth by the time they're ready to shoot. Hmmmm

        Yeah that's the problem sadly, however they do have a plus in already having an older Batman (as long as Reeves sticks to that i suppose) so having an older Grayson would make sense, again Barnes could pass for a few years younger then he is now and if we go N52/Rebirth route then we could say Dick was taking in by Bats when he was in his teens while Bruce was in his late 20's. Bit of a stretch maybe but it could work.

        Currently watching The Punisher (on E8 and loving it) and he's great in it, while his character is nothing like Dick he does have that look and charm what would go well for Dick.

      I've always thought that Efron could be a good choice. Grayson needs to be a charming pretty boy.

        I always liked the idea as Zac Efron as Dick. The only problem is that he is about 5'7. I know Dick is supposed to be 5'10. But standing Efron next Affleck could be an issue. I suppose they could do what they did with Hardy and Bale.
        I would also like Scott Eastwood. They could say he was undercover for Batman or Spiral in Suicide Squad.

    Pretty much the only DC movie I'm still excited for. The previous ones wore me down.. with JL being the worst.
    Anyway, I love the pre new52 Nightwing comics.

    A Nightwing movie would be awesome as in sequence of a trilogy or extended arc that had already been established. But Afflecks basically gone, Reeves Batman comes out after this, yeah? So unless some mind ending top director can summon up magic then I don't know where this goes.

    I am surprised that DC allows Titans to use Dick while they are also planning a movie for him. I mean how many characters did Arrow have to write out (Deadshot, Waller, Deathstroke, Harley, Katana) or were simply not allowed to use (Wonder Woman, Batman characters, Aquaman etc.) because of the movies ? Then again apparently this does not apply to Flash or Superman. Only God can understand that kind of logic.

    While some very ignorant people might not see the point of a Nightwing movie, it is a most obvious choice. Believe it or not, Nightwing is in fact DCs 2nd most popular superhero, second only to Batman according to several online polls by large comic book websites such as CBR or Newsarama.

    You don't even need Batman in a Nightwing movie. there can just be a recap at the start of the movie where Dick narrated how he was once Robin and then became his own hero in Bludhaven. You can get that out of the way in the first 5 minutes.

    I think it is important to leave Batman out of this movie to really make Nightwing shine on his own as a character which after all is why Dick became Nightwing in the first place - to get out from under Batmans shadow. Instead the movie could bring in characters like Barbara or even Starfire who are very important characters in Dicks life away from batman in the comics. Which also could set up Titans or Birds of Prey movies in the process.

      Newsarama" Worth remembering though that those polls are done by comic book fans so while Nightwing is popular it is mainly with comic book fans..

      I disagree with leaving Batman out of the movie. Nightwing shines when he is vulnerable, and in those moments you get some of my favorite scenes, especially when he ends up back at the bat cave where Batman always gives him sound advice. Batman is very much a part of his history. Their relationship changes with Dick Grayson's independence, so there is a lot to explore in this new dynamic.

    If Affleck was staying I would've liked him to cast as it would've made the bind more intricate. But after Lego Batman McKay has my full support.

    Alex Lawther is my fan casting, you need someone who has that peter parker look to him, that utter heart of gold no matter what. Seeing him in both Black Mirror and End of the F---ing World. Hes such a great young talent.

    I always look at the writers for the script. That is the most important element. Bill Dubuque is still listed. I am not really familiar with a lot of this movies/scripts, The Accountant (working on a sequel to this also,) A Family Man, The Judge and he did some of the TV series Ozark, all of which received pretty good ratings. So, I guess that is promising.

    Just to ensure that it's a go is good enough for me. Sean Faris is still my #1 pick for Nightwing by far. I can't even say I have a close second.

    But lately, I have to say that Dylan Sprayberry is developing a real good look for Dick Grayson. At 19, I suppose being that Robin started so young, maybe he could be a contender for his age--although I feel he's too young. I'm just used to picturing a more grown-looking version of Nightwing. I realize though it all depends on the story angle. Having grown up from his Man of Steel days, I could definitely separate him in my mind from young Clark to a Robin or Nightwing coming into his own, if they went that route. Now, with Hailee Steinfeld campaigning for the role of Batgirl, I also feel she's too young but could be good--and as a result, I'm starting to open up regarding DC going the young route for these solo films.

    Here again though, I picture Batgirl a bit older and mature. My #1 pick for Batgirl is Gemma Arterton. Again, I have no close second. She fits the bill 100% and when the time comes, would make a great Oracle. But this may all have to tie in with who Matt Reeves chooses to pick as his Batman. If it's a similar Batman to Affleck (come on Caviezel!), then actors like Sean and Gemma work, but if Reeves revamps Batman's age and makes him a thritysomething Batman again, then Dylan and Hailee could have a real shot.

      I have never seen any of Sean Faris' movies, or heard of him actually, but he looks the part. No to Teen Wolf's Dylan Sprayberry. His acting skills are ...meh, and I believe he is really short. My fav pick for Batgirl is Rose Leslie, and Reeves better revamp bats into a 30-ish age. No more Frank Miller fat Batfleck.

        I'll take your word on it for Sprayberry. At 19, he's 5'8" and still has some time to grow. But acting-wise, I haven't seen him in anything except MoS. Grayson is 5'10", so he'll probably grow into that but if he doesn't have the skills, then he's off my radar. Looks aren't enough.

        I've heard the name Rose Leslie a few other times attached to Babs; she's pretty good. Don't know about the acting ability but she's got the look and decent height. She might work as a #2 for me. I for one, hope they continue with the older veteran Batman theme. I won't go into a lot of detail as to why but it boils down to a fresh vantage point to create films for Batman that I hope we see more of (*cough* Caviezel) instead of going back to thirty-somethings, and it allows the Bat Family to be complete and in the same films in the DC Universe whenever they so choose. Which to me is very exciting.

          I believe in the Rebirth, and maybe New 52 also, Bruce is 30-ish with all four boys. I know there was some age/time controversy surrounding this, as in DC did not do a great job explaining the 5 years or less difference between some of the boys, yet have so much history. Regardless, I like the age points for each, including Batman, it just works. Bruce is still in his fighting prime and not so disillusioned as the Frank Miller/Batfleck (killing) gave us in Synder's DCEU.

            That is an interesting note. Personally, I'm way more about the accuracy and all of them logically coming into play than the Bat Family just being lumped together when their age range and history doesn't sync up. I can definitely see it being fun that way--to have everyone in their prime as we know them, but it's still not the same to me. It's the purist in me I guess and I'd love seeing this done right.
