The real Joker is coming to Gotham soon.

For the last few seasons, Cameron Monaghan has played "Jerome", a crazy young man who acted like and looked like The Joker from the comics and movies. But according to Gotham star David Mazouz, Monaghan is not the Joker.

"He’s not the Joker, that’s all I’ll say," Mazouz told Discussing Film. "He definitely is the inspiration for the Joker and the way that the Joker comes into the show is, in my opinion, one of the most brilliant things that Gotham has ever done."

    Ok, so not the real Joker, because of....rights, scared of changing his background? Bueller? My biggest question is when are we going to get a real Batman in this series. Young master Bruce playing a spoiled rich kid is getting kind of old.

      Not the particular story they want to tell?

      Hopefully Bruce will stop being a dick in the last half of the season. "Real Batman" will be the last scene of the series finale, Smallville-style (except I don't doubt that Mazouz will actually wear the suit).

        I hope so.There is a huge disconnect with this show for me. It is like they want to keep it grounded, kind of like Nolan's Batman series, yet there is a campy, comic vibe going on. Many of the villains vere from their origins slightly, Joker, Professor Pyg, etc. It is an odd offering....that I can't seem to quit.

          I hear that... It feels like how Gotham should be to me... like New York on acid, gritty, and restless. Mazouz's Wayne reminds me of Batman: Earth One and right now the character has the realism of how young Bruce might act out as he grows up before he disciplines himself and travels around the world to develop his skills and work ethic to make a difference in his city. Overall, Gotham is doing well. It has had its hiccups over the seasons but they are few.

          Some villains do veer from their origins more than others and some are pretty accurate, but the stories overall are solid and entertaining. When I keep an open mind and allow it to play out, I enjoy what they do. I knew I had to keep an open mind going into the first episode and onward because if I didn't, as a Batman purist, I'd be finding fault everywhere instead of enjoying it--and as a result, I have certainly enjoyed it.

      Warner isn't going to make a Batman (live) TV show, and if they were it wouldn't be on FOX. Originally Gotham wasn't even supposed to include Bruce.

      So: never.

    I’ve long since fallen off on this show, but like season one this is what the show runners said was the plan. There’d be characters that are Joker like, but not the Joker to keep the audience guessing. I distinctly remember reading quotes about that back in the day. Any good reason I should pick the show back up? The cast is pretty stacked, but I just couldn’t keep interest with it.

        I'm a big Batman guy, I just didn't have the desire/time to keep up with it at first. Everyone's telling me I gotta get back to it, so one day I'll have to try and catch up.

          I couldn't get into it. It makes no sense to have all these villains established before Batman is.

      That's so baffling. Why make a bunch of Joker-likes? Doesn't that just diminish the uniqueness and impact of the Joker himself?

      How do you go from New 52/Face-off Joker to Heath Joker? That photo is exactly how you do it. Fabulous creative massaging of the mythology.

      I never thought I'd find myself saying that about a show that offends me most of the time with it's poor artistic choices. Good work folks!

    That looks a lot better than Jared Leto's Joker from the Suicide Squad movie. And he's not even in full makeup. Even without the prosthetic, the actor who plays Jerome (Cameron Monaghan) has a better face for the way Joker should be played.

    Cameron has nailed the Joker. To bring in someone else just doesn’t cut it for me. The “real” Joker would NEVER copy someone. He is his own person!! The only way I hold hope is when the say Cameron is not the Joker, they mean he is not the Joker yet, wink, wink. Just like Bruce isn’t Batman, yet. I hope the cool part is how Cameron “becomes” the Joker.
