'Shazam' is still coming out in April 2019, Warner Bros. confirms

Way back in October of 2014, Warner Bros. announced a slate of DC movies and release dates. One of the few to actually get made and keep its original date from that 2014 announcement is Shazam. Warner Bros. announced today that Shazam will hit theaters on April 5, 2019 -- the same date given back in 2014. The movie will be released in IMAX theaters, but no word on if it'll be shot in that format.

If every other movie from that 2014 announcement was as stable as Shazam, we'd be getting Justice League 2 in 2019 as well, along with Cyborg and Green Lantern movies in 2020. Obviously things have changed since 2014 and that won't be happening. For fun, here's the original movie announcement from 2014:

"One of the few"... Specifying "keep its original date" is splitting hairs... 5 of the first 7 appear to have hit the mark within reason, Aquaman slipped a few months (and took over an originally "Untitled DC Movie" date) and The Flash was the only one of those 7 that really went to pieces. For a five-year plan that was probably prematurely announced in a poor forum for doing so, I don't think that's a bad track record.

  I specified "of the first 7," (setting aside JL2, Cyborg and GL), and of those BvS, SS and JL hit their presumed dates, Wonder Woman was actually early, and Aquaman was never explicitly paired with the July date by WB (the list of dates came out before the list of movies, and fans paired them up). IIRC, the first "official" date for Aquaman was the December date they pulled off of because of Han Solo. Flash, as I admitted, is a confirmed miss, as is JL2, and I don't believe we have enough info to firmly say what's going to happen with the Cyborg and GLC films. So of those 10, 5 hit their presumed dates (or we think it will) or came out early, 1 missed the fan-presumed date but hit the more-vague WB window, there were 2 utter failures to produce a movie, and 2 TBD. Plus there are two not on that original schedule that are going into production this year: WW2 and SS2.
  Just for fun, the original Flash date is now vacated by WB for the second week of Tomb Raider, and the stated Aquaman date is now Teen Titans GO! To the Movies!

    Actually, the first official date for "Aquaman" was October 5, 2018. Then when it was clear Disney was going to keep "Solo: A Star Wars Story" for Memorial Day (and that Fox wouldn't have "Avatar 2" ready), WB moved "Aquaman" to the prime pre-Christmas 2018 spot.

      Technically it was, but WB never outright said that Aquaman was the July 27, 2018 date. It was assumption at that point, because even their big rivals can't make all of their release dates they take years in advance (even Disney has that problem).

  I think "Green Lantern Corps" will hit 2020 (whether it'll be spring or summer is still up for debate). Toby Emmerich now having co-greenlight authority and his promoting Walter Hamada to oversee DC Comics films bodes well for quality films in the future.
  And I can see Warners fast-tracking "Cyborg" if "Black Panther" ends up being another blow-out hit for Marvel Studios and Disney.

      Yeah i'm getting tired of world ending or city ending plots, one of the great things about Spider-Man last year was that the stakes were pretty low, if Spidey had failed then it wouldn't have mattered that much to the city or world. MoS2 should use Metallo as its villain and make him a victim of the carnage of MoS seeking revenge on Supes for what was done to him (basically what BvS should have been).

  Who's to say they couldn't play up on the fact that Brainiac made his way to Earth already or at the same when Kal-El landed? To infiltrate and invade the planet from within by cyber means is very doable for Brainiac so it's not just some big-battle space invasion. It can be a little galactic and introduce some real reporter-detective work for Clark to uncover the story and how to stop Brainiac. There's way more here than space invasion.
  Brainiac is a perfect villain for MoS 2. Or whatever they choose to name it.

    No, it still remains a space invasion no matter how you slice it. Braniac never leaves his ship and sends his minions to do the work, its too early for that same formula again. They should save braniac for mos 3 or jl 2, since its not coming out anytime soon. The only way it could work maybe is if they take the threat to another planet and later have braniac taking the whole city on earth as revenge...that movie will the similar to aou.

      Just for the record, I'm not against the space invasion theme. Doesn't bother me a bit. Superman is from another planet and his villains that give him a good run are mostly galactic. And end-of-the-world scenarios or Metropolis problems that can bring the city down are his true challenges. Yes, lower key crime is there but he can handle all of it and it can be a bit trivial for someone like him.
      Supes is no friendly neighborhood Spiderman, so when you give him more, it often involves crime of epic proportions. But I like the idea of localizing the story struggle of MoS 2 to just Metropolis and introducing Brainiac because you can work in how he could manipulate others to commit crime and keep Supes busy, overworked and frustrated, while masterminding his main plan of takeover. I could picture him taking different cities in the world unknown to Superman and Metropolis being next on his list. Like a terrorist scheme that no one can identify because they can't see it and it's up to Clark to figure out where this new threat is originating from while he uncovers in the midst of it that Brainiac is masterminding the terrorist threat across the world. And if he solves the the problem in his own city by defeating Brainiac, it will make Brainiac relinquish control of the minds he has in his possession in his other cities (main hubs). Giving Supes multiple changes in Metropolis would really make him put his thinking cap on while his city goes nuts around him. Plus, Brainiac is long overdue in my book to be on film so I'm very much sticking with him for the next film. Dang, I just gave a full-on movie pitch here. If I see any of this in MoS 2, I want my money. :)
      We have to see Supes battle in a new way and seeing Clark in a true battle of wits with a serious enemy is a fresh take to see him in and not just something where he can slam his enemies into next week through buildings. Showing him in this light gives the character more substance to me.

    I actually was quite enjoying the movie up until Superman - lots of good humor and great fan service, though the cut things from the trailers were annoyingly missing. But from Superman on just felt ...off. And Marvel-like, in a bad way - like the shallow, unrealistic, boring side of Marvel.
    Superman’s return felt weird to me and just wrong. I expected him to come back to life on his own, saving the day the moment the League was in their darkest, most hopeless moment, in a beautiful, tear jerking, climactic way. Not this weird business with exhuming his body and bringing him back themselves and then spending all that time on an admittedly cool looking, but empty feeling, fight with a weirdly deranged Superman.
    Then when Superman came back to his senses, the movie still went out of its way to NOT make it any kind of an emotional moment, despite the buildup we were promised from prior movies and the trailers. Also, he was acting completely out of character. His behavior felt nothing like anything we had got from him before and felt completely unnatural and forced, instead of the natural progression in character development we had been promised since MoS. He should have had the same quiet confidence he had at the end of BvS, while still being serious and dutiful. No one in their right mind is constantly smiling and cracking cheesy jokes nonstop when they’re fighting to save everyone’s lives from an evil alien threat, and he had no reason to be so psychotically happy anyway since the last thing he remembered was literally taking his own life in order to save a world that hated and feared him.
    Also the Steppenwolf fight felt like it had zero stakes and did not live up to the epic action sequences from previous installments of the DCEU. And the scene with Superman flying the building to safety - while funny - looked so cartoony. Actually, that’s the perfect word. The movie, particularly in regards to Superman, was cartoony. It was no longer the real world we were given in all of the previous movies, but a kids’ cartoon. Even the obnoxiously over saturated color palette fits the cartoon aesthetic.
    Then, to top it all off, there was the atrocious CGI mouth situation on Supes (especially in the opening scene and the evil Superman fight), and the completely weirdly colored suit.
    Also could’ve used more of all of the characters, especially Aquaman, and maybe Cyborg, too.
    However, with all of that said, believe it or not, I did like most of the movie. It was alright overall. But “alright” is severely underwhelming for a JL movie, and especially one that had so much more promise due to the movies that preceded and built up to it. My mind should have been as blown as it was with BvS. And I think almost all of these problems could be fixed or lessened with a director’s cut or something, and they were probably almost all the faults of Joss Whedon / WB execs, including cutting out so much essential material, even tons of material that we were promised from the trailers.
    Also, this is only my opinion from the first viewing. Things could definitely change with a second. And I’m sure things would change with an extended/director’s cut.

      I mean I basically agree with everything you say… Perhaps i just love cavills superman... i mean it really does suck that What we got with the justice league was so underwhelming but I just can’t say that Cavills Superman was the worst part of the movie... even though I enjoyed his characterization it did feel cheap and unearned… Man of steel and Batman V superman to me will be my favorite comic book movies of all time and they really felt like one solid viewing experience… And then there is justice league which was so disjointed to what was established before… I do agree that superman should have come back on his own instead of this weird let’s dig up Clarks corpse and see what the heck happens when we give him a jumpstart with a mother box... and doomsday and ZodAnd Lex Luther even felt like much bigger threat than Steppenwolf. but the feeling of what could have been? easily is the worst of justice league. And knowing how close we were to get the justice league movie we wanted mix that even worse too

      Very true. And don’t get me wrong, I love Henry Cavill as Superman, too! Perfect casting. And it was him who became my favorite Superman. MoS was the movie that made me actually like Superman. So good.
      But what was so bad about JL besides Superman that he couldn’t be the worst part? It was fine, if a bit disappointing, short, and gross looking.

  His face was awful in the opening but was alright in his later scenes i thought. As for SM himself well he was by far the best part of the film and shows that when Cavil is allowed to actually play Superman he's actually pretty fantastic, the Superman in JL is what Superman should be and is and thank god that mess of a SM from BvS is dead and buried.

    We finally started growing past the idea of Superman as this uber cheesy, one-dimensional character, and now JL just brought him back to that in full force.
    Superman should not be a ridiculous, unrealistic guy who flies around with a cheesy grin giving public service announcements. What we should have gotten in JL was something closer to Captain America in the Marvel films - still serious and dutiful, but believably and realistically optimistic.
    Superman is a hero and symbol of hope to all of those in dark or dangerous or oppressed situations. He is not a sociopathic cartoon come to life. He played Superman in MoS and BvS perfectly fine. JL is where things started going weird.
    I would even be fine if he acted more like as jovial as he is in this in a future installment, after he’s had proper time to really appreciate his new lease on life and to see the world’s newfound acceptance of him. But in JL it is just unnatural, inconsistent, and feels rushed and unearned.
    What was bad about the rest of JL? It was fine, if a bit disappointing, short, and gross looking.
    BvS Superman was the most Superman we have ever gotten. BvS is a beautiful ode to everything he stands for.

      Spoken by someone who clearly hasn't read a Superman comic in his life because you clearly don't know the character that well at all. My advice is read All Star Superman the greatest Superman story of them all and one of the best DC stories out there because that nails SM completely and shows off all his depth, also check out Rebirth's Superman because again thats Superman and JL's Superman is much more closer to them then that mess of a depiction MoS and BvS put out.

    I disagree that it's a foregone conclusion that a live-action film will be made of Kingdom Come. WB doesn't generally make movies directly from the comics stories for starters (with Watchmen an obvious exception), and using the characters the way they did in that book would be way too confusing for the GA.

Thinking about it, using Kingdom Come as the Endgame for the current DCEU could be really interesting. As the Marvel films have been leading to Avengers: Infinity War for the past 10years. DCEU could lead to Kingdom Come.
Give them an extra 10years from now to introduce and flesh out the characters needed. I feel it could have a kind of LOGAN vibe where Superman in concerned. Especially the beginning with him turning his back on the world and living on the farm.
The special effects in 10years time would be out of this world too. So capturing the big battle sequence would be no problem.
BUT i think we all know this would be way way to good to be true as I honestly don't think WB/DC have this film universe mapped out. With the random film announcements such as that joker vs Harley film, Gotham city sirens and the supposedly other elseworld Joker film. It just seems WB/DC plan is to get whatever they can out the door and hoping it works.
I'm sure time will tell. I think one thing that us DC fans do owe to Marvel is that with their broad range of character films, we are finally getting films other than Bats and Supes. I for one can't wait for Nightwing and Shazam.

  I would geek the freak out if I saw an Old armored Batman, Green Lantern, Wonder Woman..... and an old Superman with the white streaks and that S..... but honestly I do feel like we will see this adaptation either Animated or Movie... they would probably consider it once they settle down with all the movies they wanna do and they would probably start looking into Kingdom Come... an Old Cavill, Gadot, Momoa, Ezra and maybe Affleck but who knows

Can't wait for Aquaman, Shazam and WW2. I am not that excited about Flashpoint, unless they replace Ezra Miller as Flash....and throw out the rubber band suit. What I want is MoS2 (with no Synder involvement whatsoever) going against Brainiac....because....it is time.

  "Space invasions" were not the problem, it was script and Snyder's vision (MoS/BvS/JL) that didn't work. A lot of JL in the comics happens from stuff of other worlds and space, hell the floating JL tower is in outer space. I have no problem with the setting, if it is told well.

    I have no problem with it either, but theres so much great stories without any space invasions lioe superman/batman: public enemies and superman vs the elite. Plus i think the ga needs a small break from space invasions after mos and jl, adding the mcu space invasions as well. Darkseid will be another invasion so as braniac and a few more in future dc movies. They should definitely do it but they should leave some "space" between them.

Ezra Miller was a standout of the movie for most people, there’s no way they’re replacing him.
I think he’s pretty good overall, but wish he looked different.
As for the suit, I will never be able comprehend the complaints with that.

It was never verbally expressed that THAT suit was a prototype or on some evolutionary path. If they had, I would have cut them slack, as it makes sense in the story.

      Of course I'm reading into it, but it's not like they don't want us to read into things. :P
      I'm not pretending there is evidence that we'll get a suit upgrade. It just seems natural (and almost always happens in superhero films). Assuming it won't change in the future just because they don't spell it out for you in his first appearance is unnecessarily cynical. I prefer to keep an open mind and see what happens.
      It looks like a rough draft with the exposed wires and space shuttle parts, and Barry is clearly a fledgling working out of a man cave, not Star Labs (yet).

I hate to knock them because at least they are trying with a budget of old candy wrappers and recycled cans, but they run on fumes of 'shipping' and poorly designed theater costumes. Disclaimer; I watch them all, except for Legends, oi.

      I've tried watching Legends and it still sucks. For whatever seemingly fun premises they have (I kinda dug them going back in time to save George Lucas) they ruin with the cliched CW melodrama crap (anyone remember what a bore Hawkgirl and Hawkman were or how many times Rip Hunter complained?). I didn't care when Professor Stein died nor did I care when Captain Cold kicked it for a while.
      All the "Arrowverse" shows suffer from pretty much the same thing and that's the simple fact that they're on the CW.

      The Hawks haven't been a thing since the end of S1 and Rip is barely in it now anyway Rip was brilliant last season with him having no memory or being turned evil. Legends though is fucking brilliant and this "melodrama" you speak off is barely in Legends as the show is more focused on being Sat morning superhero cartoon show in the best possible way.

      Legends, unfortunately, is the worst of the worst. I had to give up on it. When you have all those superheros with extraordinary powers, yet most of them are punching their way out of fights with their fist (I assume because of special effects budget issues,) mixed with soapy melodrama and constantly breaking and fixing the time streams, mostly caused by them, it was all too much. I don't get the silver age correlation, but if is what I described, I will pass.

      Legends is great. I love Brandon Routh's version of The Atom, and Professor Stein always makes me smile. :) Tons of great stories, from funny to sad to serious.

    No, no. They get no credit for "trying" and failing (hard) to do "bigger" storylines. Smallville was an EXPERT at doing that after all.
    The whole point of these TV shows should be to take advantage of their lower budget to do very character-oriented storylines because that's where TV's true strength is - they have much more time to get their audience invested in the characters.... And yet, they CAN'T even do that right.

      While I don't watch the shows, I do find it surprising how they lose a lot of steam over the seasons. I still remember when folks were going crazy over Flash and Arrow, but now they barely get talked about.

That first season of Flash and that second season of Arrow still remain really good seasons with some good storylines, badass villains and killer finales. But then they just RUIN everything good they do with classic CW melodrama (Olicity and WestAllen) among other things.

      I have to agree. The CW in particular has their own version of a Marvel format. The CW version includes shipping, tons of drama and very little action. It reads more like a soap opera than a comic story.

      Flash is otherwise so well done that I'm still on board and pretty much forgive any shortcomings so far.
      Some of the plot-induced stupidity to create drama was frustrating in Season 3 though... The series has slowly been on something of a downward slope (but not without it's high notes) from Season 1, which I thought was pretty awesome.
      Haven't seen Season 4 yet, so fingers crossed they heard some of the complaints (the legit ones anyway) and correct course.
      All that said, "Constant Whining" is pretty hilarious and not entirely inaccurate. lol
      Also, I gave Supergirl a few episodes (mostly because I knew J'onn is in it) and just couldn't get into it. :( Hopeful for a movie.

Both killer stories. I'm not sure they'd be palatable to audiences so soon after BvS, though. People seem want a fluffier Superman story right now.
Personally, I'd like to see a World's Finest movie next, where we see the newly revived Superman finally hash things out with Batman since they haven't had a chance to properly become friends and close allies so far. It would be a great way to tease the Legion of Doom more too.
The Search for Kryptonite might be a decent story concept to sample from for that, given Lex is on the loose again and they'll surely know about that after JL, and he'll definitely be interested in more Kryptonite.
A Trinity film after that would be lovely too.
Other than that, I would say an adaptation of Geoff Johns' Brainiac takes top priority for me, and eventually I'd like to see at least some major elements of All-Star Superman adapted. :)

  Yes, i agree with most of the things you said except for the braniac part. I want to see it as badly as everyone else, but another space invasion so soon after jl would be a mistake. As for a worlds finest movie, that would be great except for having joker and lex as the villains since lex will be in the legion of doom movie. Superman all star will be too soon. But overall , worlds finest should be the way to go but idk how they will handle the villains.

    The villains are flexible for me, but I think the basic premise is a good way to go for Bats and Supes to get some bonding time. I think Lex could be masterminding other villains from the still-forming Legion, and it could hype up what I'm hoping will be an eventual Legion-focused JL2 or JL3.
    Hunting down all the Kryptonite in the world just seems well timed after the current events in the DCEU.

I just want another solo Superman movie. Just call it "Superman", have the villain be Brainiac, have the plot be a little similar to Injustice 2(with Brainiac being the big bad) and maybe introduce Supergirl midway through the movie. Have the plot revolve around Kal's acceptance of being the "Last Son of Krypton" and realizing that his species dies with him, but the hope of Krypton's survival comes in the form of Kara being alive.

Superman gave the world hope and now Kara gives him hope.

If you're a fan of that story, I recommend Geoff Johns' 'Brainiac', or it's animated adaptation 'Superman: Unbound' (coincidentally starring Matt Bomer as Superman, who a lot of people have fancast as Bruce Wayne for years lol).
Probably what inspired the Injustice guys, and carries a powerful message at the end that I could totally see gelling with the vibe of Man of Steel. :)

  I've seen Unbound. That's kind of what I was thinking but with a story that focuses more on Kal and less on Supergirl. I'd rather have a Supergirl solo movie that apes that story more closely. Something that's a cross betwen Unbound and Winter Soldier(a person out of time coping with a world they don't recognize).

Won't happen.Hack Snyder screwed both Ben Affleck Batman and Henry's Superman.MOS was a failure so no studio would want to waste $ 400 million on a Superman movie again.
On the contrary, Wonder Woman 2, Aquaman and Shazam will have a lower budget and will generate PROFIT.

  Actually, MoS is considered a box office success, was liked by just about everyone in the general audience, and was even liked by a majority of the critics.
  The only people who disliked it and keep propagating this ridiculous “divisive”/“failure” narrative are a vocal minority of the critics and a whiny contingent of the fans.

I feel like some people are having trouble wrapping their heads around the fact that this film is ACTUALLY happening. I guess it is partly because we are now heading into a time where the DCEU is just a big anomaly. The entire future slate is uncertain for the foreseeable future aside from Aquaman, Shazam and WW 2 and we have no idea what is coming next and when.
