'Fifty Shades of Grey' producer joins 'Suicide Squad 2', Charles Roven to return

Warner Bros. has named Michael De Luca a producer on Suicide Squad 2, according to Variety. Most recently De Luca has produced the Fifty Shades of Grey franchise, but he has some winners under his belt as well. He was also a producer on The Social Network, Moneyball, and Captain Phillips.

Variety speculates that Warner Bros. is going to put producers in charge of single movies, rather than having them oversee multiple different DC movies like they have in the past. Update: Suicide Squad, and longtime DC movie producer Charles Roven, will in fact be back for the sequel.

Gavin O'Connor is writing and directing Suicide Squad 2. Production is expected to start this fall.

I don’t know what this guy was thinking taking up Fifty Shades of Grey but hopefully this SS sequel won’t have the same style as the first one. SS In my opinion was the worst in the entire DCEU.

    Everyone has there opinion but the Villain Enchantress with her weird Dance and Joker being under used & That bad Deadshot and Batman fight scene & the reason BvS was good for me was because of the Uncut version

      Actually, the Batman scenes were the only thing in that movie that got me excited. The Joker being underused? I wanted them to cut him out completely. Not a fan of their meth-head Jokerleto version. Lets be honest, it was basically a Harley film with her sidekick Deadshot. I agree the uncut version was a little better, but none of it saved this film. I can't get excited again for more of it from this director. I know WB stepped all over his toes, as expected, but I can't image a director releasing this under his name. If he was a great director, he should of walked away from this project.

        You are quite wrong! It was Will Smith movie with his sidekick Margot Robbie and the rest of the squad were extras. The arc of Deadshot was much more relevant than Harley's although she is a much more famous and interesting character.
        Harley was objectified and treated as eye candy for the guys, which for a woman in a superheroes movies is more than enough.

        Agree to disagree, but really, what is the point? Neither arcs held much weight in that movie. Harley wasn't a strong female archetype, and as you said, was more eye-candy than substance. Deadshot's arc was weak and short-lived. The foundation rested on a team facing a belly dancing witch and some forgettable CGI monster. Do we need more of this by the same director?

        She is a complex character with a very interesting arc. How the Joker manipulated and seduced in order for her give up her former self, was suppose to be one of the functions of the Joker in this movie. The relevant scenes for her arc were cut and instead were introduced pointless scenes whose sexiness ( club scene) and her butt were the highlight.
        Deadshot's background although small, added more to the character than all the others together. The background of Deadshot doesn't have much more to say unless the fact that he came from a troubled family. Besides he was the center of all the other characters' arc. Flagg expressed his love for June to Deadshot, instead of showing his scenes with her. El Diablo talked about his past and interacted mostly with Deadshot. The only cool fight scene was with Deadshot. Most of the scenes were about Deadshot interacting with other characters because everthing that didn't focus on Deadshot was cut or diminished.
        Unfortunately, WB changed David Ayer film by making reshoots and cutting most of the scenes where Deadshot was not the focus. Added new CGI. The dance scene is all CGI. There is no Cara Delevign acting in that scene. Also replaced the dialogue in many scenes, especially of the enchantress and the Joker. It is funny because there are parts where Jared's voice is completely different and sometimes his mouth is shut while talking as for exemple in the helicopter scene.
        The growling is also a sound introduced in the editing and we also can hear that same growling while he is kissing Harley on the Helicopter and it is quite perceptible that this sound was introduced.

    I don't like BvS at all but SS screwed up my favorite comic book character in Joker and focused on all the worst aspects of my favorite female comic book character in Harley (Robbie was great though) so for that its the worst of the DCEU to me. At the very least BvS had the warehouse fight scene what is pretty awesome and Iron's managed to steal every scene he was in.

        How it' Snyder film when the script doesn't match. Kevin Smith even bought someone who saw the Snyder 's Early Preview the 2 cut is two different.
        The opening scenes with Superman Batman with robber wasn't there.
        Wonder Woman couldn't save all the people in the opening battle

        Iris got cut
        The whole Cyborg arc was changed. SO much so that Joss messed up the timeline, in BvS we see Victor becomes Cyborg before Superman's death but in JL he says he becomes Cyborg after Superman death !!!!!
        Joss even changed the Victors lab experiment
        Stephenwold died in the had of Darkseid in Zack's cut not by the Parademon.

        DGA rules would not allow the sole directing credit if it was not a majority Snyder film.
        CGI Superman was unfortunate, but honestly better than morose emo Superman.

  While I agree with SS being terrible, I did like the look and feel of the film. That's all it had going for it in my opinion. It felt like a quality film, it was just missing everything else a good film usually has (ie script).

        Bvs killed any hype or chance jl had since it was a direct sequel to a movie that was hated by most and wasnt entertaining...now with ss 2, it dont really have much to do with either of them. Even though alot of people didnt like the first one, they still enjoyed watching it and found it entertaining, plus having margot Robbie and will smith as leads always helps. Everybody will look and crave for what ss 1 was missing. And now that the characters are well known now, it can make just as much of not more as the first one. Especially if its good.

  Unless the reviews are fantastic then yeah i agree, SS got by on at the time great marketing and trailers but SS2 won't have that kind of luck this time. I sense a TMNT 2 type of thing where the first made a lot but the sequel while being better makes a hell of a lot less because no one gives a fuck about it anymore.

Oh dear, I don’t think not having any producers carry over to oversee multiple movies in the universe is a good thing... How else will they ensure continuity and consistency in quality and tone and such?

    It's for the best after what Snyder created. I'd prefer a full on reboot crisis-style but, this will have to do. At least then I can support the movies I actually like, if they are good.
    Let that all fade from public consciousness, and then try again with a better director after enough time has passed.

        I'm not saying they shouldn't be careful. :P
        I'm saying that we don't need constant connections and tie-ins and sequels and references to give the DC universe value. Let the worlds do their own things until it's time for a team-up or crossover, and be mindful of stepping on each others toes canonically in the meantime.
        Basically, just treat it like the comics. :)

      I know, but I really don't think they care. Look at how both BvS and JL said that Wonder Woman was in hiding for 100 years. Gal Gadot came out and said that was a bad creative decision, and it sounds like they're going to ignore it going forward.

I'm pretty interested to see how this movie plays out. I wasn't a big fan of the first movie but if WB takes the series in a new direction, it could be pretty good.
As for different producers on each movie, it might be for the best. Making the movies more standalone with a different tone sounds like it would fit the Suicide Squad well.
It's nice to hear some movie news following the Suicide Squad: Hell to Pay animated movie's cast reveal and images.

      I'd accept that rationale if the rest of credits were indies. The two 50S movies made $166M and $114M in the US; the other three made between $75-107M. They were hits.

    The thing is, I understand where Legend is coming from. I too "am an engineer", no joke. I have two STEM degrees which I worked really, really hard for. But I also don't like to say that I have those degrees. Meaning, I do understand where people like you are coming from, thinking he's just showing off his piece of paper that gives him a status. However, yes... on a site like this, none of that matters. But if you've worked as hard as Legend (I assume so, because I worked really hard for it myself) has to obtain those degrees, then it becomes very tempting to use them as an argument when you're accused of ignorance of the mathematical or logical variety. Because you know, you've proven yourself by obtaining a difficult degree. It's just a matter of proving the opponent wrong, and I guess claiming some sort of authority or respect. Again, I fully understand this comes across as showing off... and that's why I really never try to bring that up myself. Because, either people don't believe you, or they accuse you of being arrogant. And I get it. Form my experience, engineers rank among the most arrogant people I know. But from Legend's perspective, you have to understand that when you're challenged on certain things that may have something to do with your job, it's just really tempting and easy to bring that up.

So now that we know the DC franchise will only consist of solo films, why have a SS sequel on its production schedule? How do you fix characters like Boomerang and Killer Croc and Joker...to name a few?
Ive always wanted a Gordon solo film staring Brad Pitt, a Seven tone and based on Year One with Batman in the shadows and background only. This can kick-off the Reeves trilogy ;)
I know we have Batman Begins but this film can be rated R and be wonderful.

      I'm hoping that Black Adam isn't the villain so much as he is the Macguffin. Some group of baddies is going after an immense weapon, the Squad has to stop them, and at the climax both sides discover that the "weapon" is really a sarcophagus with Black Adam in it. He awakens, smites someone, and that leads to his solo film and eventually Shazam 2.

I really don't care who the producer is as much as the director, writer and cast. Regardless, I find it hard to believe it won't be an improvement, besides who wouldn't want to see Harley tying up Nightwing on the big screen :)

  i also want this. Feels so lame to make this particular property pg13 when we are heading into an age where comic book movies can be edgy and R rated and still be successful. Its a total embarassment in my opinion that Suicide Squad, which was pg13, made less money than Deadpool, which was R. They need to stop worrying about "keeping things the same tone" or whatever Charles Roven once said and just do whats best for the movie. Because otherwise, it will feel like they are holding back, and when we have movies like Deadpool and Logan to compare it too, that becomes a bigger problem.

  "pointless" is an odd way to describe it. This is what annoys me to no end about the whole cinematic universe mentality. Why does everything have to have a "point"? Like for some reason all these films have to play some larger role in the grand scheme on the CU and act as just a small piece of this giant puzzle. While I understand this strategy is appealing to many, I don't think its necessary at all. I just want movies. But aside from that, its actually a very cool concept in my opinion. It was just executed so horribly in the first movie that I feel it has unfortunately turned many people off of the property. I am itching to Suicide Squad done justice. IF you ever want to see a great SS movie, watch Assault on Arkham

    Fair enough. I like your argument and you are actually right. There doesn't need to be a point. But I didn't mean it in that sense. It's just that I don't see a point in doing it right now. They clearly are trying to right their wrongs and I think it'd be better if they left it alone for a while, do other movies worth making and exploring and then come back to SS. I really think that making sequels to the movies that didn't do well critically this soon is gonna back fire on them. They can make solo movies that are kinda separate like Shazam, develop characters and then try to give it a shot at previous failures. They can make a Booster Gold/ Blue Beetle movie, a Bluebeetle Jaime Reyes movie, Lobo, Teen titans, Birds of Pray, Martian Manhunter, Black Canary... I dunno

        if it gets good reviews I think it will be fine. A fair number of people will still go to DC movies either way. I can't remember if i said this to you or if this was for another comment, but I think there is still a fair amount of intrigue with the suicide squad property. The character roster is one thing that will get people interested. If they want to throw someone like Deathtroke in there, that alone is a surefire way to get a lot of people very curious. And if they do it properly next time and go for a much more grounded story, thus resulting in a much lower budget, the financial outcome won't be as much of a problem.
        But either way, Squad 2 will likely come after Aquaman, Shazam, and possibly WW 2 as well. I am very hopeful for all of those movies I believe there is reason to be optimistic about them personally. So, ideally, by the Squad 2 comes out, DC will have built a small track record of success and interest in the DCEU will has gone back up. T

    What I told to SilentStorm, I really see no point in doing it right now. People relate that franchise to failure so I think it'll backfire. There are so many things they can do yet they keep trying with SS.

Lest we forget. This movie will be directed by the guy who did Ben Affleck's The Accountant, one of the better action-thrillers of the last couple of years. One things for sure, Gavin O'Connor will make Suicide Squad 2 a much more clever movie, compared to the first.
