Some fans think that Henry Cavill's portrayal of Superman in Man of Steel and Batman v Superman strayed too far from the character they love in the comics. It seems like Cavill himself agrees, at least to some degree. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Cavill said that Justice League is the first time we see the "true" Superman.

"Geoff [Johns] and I have been delving into the history of the character to get to the core of who Superman is," Cavill said. "This is the first time we see the true Superman. The Superman who is confident, and sure, and full of hope and joy."

In a previous interview, Cavill said that he enjoys the more traditional take on Superman and that he and Justice League director Joss Whedon saw eye-to-eye on the character.

Cavill's portrayal of Superman is certainly much different in Justice League than his previous times playing the character. Did you enjoy that or did you prefer Zack Snyder's darker take on Superman? Let me know in the comments below.

    Kinda true, Man of Steel and BvS was mostly about Clark Kent 'becoming' Superman. Loved it in Man of Steel but didn't think it was the right route to take in BvS. Would've love to see the true Superman get broken down and rebuilt within that movie.

BvS's story ended up being a lot more about Batman, obviously in the theatrical cut and even with Kent's added footage in the extended version, that still didn't bring him on par to Bruce's story. But Zack's got a knack for conceptualizing. I've come to really respect Zack more as a casting director of DC's heroes than as a successful storytelling/director.

    That may be so, but your delivery of the jokes still fell flat. Either the jokes were lousy, or the director couldn't tell you how to do it, or you're just not that good at comedy.

    Still, you were the best thing about the movie.

            In my opinion he was the worst part of it. After having to listen to that garbage of a soundtrack and scrip for 1h and 40m, watch Fattleck and bad jokes and cringe everytime the scenes didn't work or shat on previous movies, he was the ROTTEN CHERRY on top of the shit cake that the movie was.         That doesn't mean it's emotionally or intellectually honest to who the character has been up to this point.

        What I have like to see a Superman closer to who is in the comic books yes but I would have liked to see it done gradually over the course of several movies. But you know how it is with freakin Studio executives

        To me, the true Superman would’ve come back still serious and dutiful, but with a sort of quiet confidence that carries over from his last act in BvS. Not so cheery and bright all the sudden that it’s unnatural and over-the-top and feels undeserved.

          Very well said man. I mean if you rewatch BvS you see him heroic and smiling in his first two scenes. First he dives head first into the missile and then into the drone. Then he smiles at Lois, saves her, then brings her flowers with a smiling even though it's raining outside,... All of his humble character and the weight of responsibility he was carrying before were gone in JL and made him totally unlikable.

      The true Superman has a confidant smile at most times but isn't afraid to hide his emotions, I don't understand why you think that smile was forced, a lot of people have a smile on there faces most of the time, and the reason why he was crackling jokes was because Steppenwolf was no threat to him, the battle was no longer for the fate of the planet as soon as Superman entered the scene, it was a battle of survival, for Steppenwolf.

        In real life a person doesn’t have “:D” emotions the entire time throughout a fight. Just seemed careless and cheapened all of the stakes and weight of the battle, like the fate of the world isn’t a big issue.

          As I said, this wasn't a fight for Superman at all, more like play time, and this isn't Superman's fault for being too strong, it was WB for having such a weak antagonist, I mean Steppenwolf? really? In the animated series Superman beat him like fodder. DC characters are are extremely strong even in the comics so he should have at least chosen a stronger villain who would actually pose a threat to them. That's why the stakes seemed cheapened.

            But even if it’s easy for him, it’s not something someone who cares about people would take so lightly. This “play time” is over the cost of ever human life on the planet, and the lives of the superheroes he’s fighting alongside. They made Steppenwolf out to be much stronger than fodder in this movie, too.

            No they didn't, he seemed fodder from start to end, WW could take him alone, he called at most a few dozen parademons at once, he never seemed like a threat from the beginning, that's why no one remembers him, and now you're just trying to impose what you think should happen, so Superman's confidant when he fights, he's had worse with Doomsday or the other kryptonians, he was worried then, because they were an actual threat, Steppenwolf was too slow to even land one punch on sups, course he'd be laid back, everyone shows 'care' in different ways, foe Superman it's to be the light of hope that makes everyone think 'everything will be fine' while they're brooding over what to do, and believe me, Superman did not take this lightly, it's not like he was just chilling, he was making remarks and smiling WHILE FIGHTING AND SAVING PEOPLE NONSTOP. That's just he's character, stop trying to impose your views of how someone who cares should behave , all characters do it differently, the world isn't all black and white

            Wrong. The whole point of bringing Superman back was because they couldn’t stop Steppenwolf without him.
            I’ll have to re-watch it someday, but from that first viewing, it felt like the entire movie was building up to an epic and weighty, climactic battle with high stakes, but we got something that felt completely inconsequential and rather more Marvel-like than the very serious and grand final battles we’ve gotten in the DCEU so far. You say he wasn’t taking it lightly. It feels that way to me, but I hope you’re right and on second viewing I will not feel that way. Either way, chill out man. I don’t WANT to dislike this movie. In fact, I liked most of it. Just felt underwhelming, and I think that was largely due to Superman’s return and the final battle feeling superficial and missed, as well as all the deleted scenes and such not making it.

    To me, Zack, Chris and Goyer's superman arc is up there with Alan Moore's swamp thing saga as one of my favorite comic book stories ever told. It made me love the character so much. That awful shit in JL made me remember why It was so easy picking batman over superman, raph over leo, or even bugs over mickey as a kid.

      I think that was it... The original goal was for Clark to evolve into the "traditional Superman" over the course of the 3 or 4 movies, and the rest of the JL heroes along with him. But a lot of the GA was already conditioned to think that superhero movies = stupid jokes (and missed them in BvS) and a large portion of the fanbase wanted a purer version of canon. Alas.

We literally deserve a proper conclusion in Zack's cut, I think many of us want to join Supes in the sun as promised...

    He ain´t wrong but the re-shots and re-dubbing overshot with him. He is good in the end and it was fun to see the Man of Steel become Superman, as intended, but there this wasn´t the best possible outcome. Close enough but the seams started to show on repeated viewing.
    Doesn´t matter now anyway. See you in half a decade for his reboot.

      Bvs ruined it. I hated the neck snap in MOS, but it was an otherwise good movie. BVS failed after. No exploration of him as Clark Kent what so ever. Bvs will live on in infamy as the movie that killed an entire movie universe (until a good reboot comes along)

          Also, please tell me how Superman Christ analogy is intellectual when it goes up against TDK's philosophical take on the battle of chaos and order or Logan's take on surviving as an outsider trying to get away from authorities for being different (it was an analogy to trumps stance on refugees/asylum seekers)

        Dude, Jesus was SOOO depressed in his teens. Didn't you know? And then, Satan released his son Apocalypse-Man on the poor sons of Abraham, and Jesus has a HUGE battle with him in downtown Bethlehem. They tear up mangers, and barns, and the collateral damage is pretty significant, but in the end Jesus takes a crucifix (you know, Jesus's weakness) that was given to him by his BFF Simon Peter Parker, and stabs Apocalypse-Man to death, but also sacrificing himself in the process. He comes back to life and people just LOVE the story so much, including God, they remake it into the Gospels.

            Would love to see your reaction in a realistic world in which you are persecuted and feared all your life due to being an extraterrestrial in a planet that is already xenophobic and cynical of its own people, let alone space aliens.

            His faith was tested. Lex started to break him. He’s human, it happens. Watch the movie for a few more minutes, though, and you see his faith not only restored but completed in the final act of his life, sacrificing himself to save the world that feared and hated him. But sure, he’s grimdark and hates humanity and all that, whatever. Sounds fair to me. LOL

            MoS was a financial success liked by almost all of the general audience and a majority of the critics, BvS made tons of money and was liked by most of the general audience that saw it, and JL has been pretty universally well received amongst the general audience

        He’s right, though. Superman is constantly revealed to just be a human in these movies. Except because of where he comes from, he knows he is different than others, and it’s always considered an unfortunate thing - not a thing that makes him a god in his own eyes. It’s an immigrant analogy.

    He understands the character better than Snyder ever did. I wouldn't be surprised if they recast him, along with Batfleck, after flashpoint. Otherwise they would have announced another Superman movie in their slate. It really seems they just want to get as far away from Snyder's vision as possible, which is a good thing, but that doesn't mean they have to get rid of the one good thing Snyder did, which was casting. Oh well, I predict by 2020 we'll have a new Superman

            His contribution is still unknown. Jason Fuchs still got a story credit even though his version was apparently tossed. Maybe Snyder's ideas were discarded during the screenwriting process, maybe they stayed intact. We don't know.

            Wonder Woman was the only unambiguous hit in the DCEU, which drives you and your cohort insane, so your response is "That's because he wrote it!" It's so transparent, this attempt to give Snyder the credit.

            Both are important, but either way, you’re ignoring my point and bringing up something irrelevant. My point was that you cannot assume anything is true beyond what we are officially told without undeniable proof. Zack Snyder has a writing credit. To baselessly assume he somehow did not help in the writing of the movie is completely ludicrous and can have no rational motive, only the inexplicable need to constantly hate on Snyder. It is equivalent to denying the official information we have about Christopher Nolan’s work on Batman Begins. Unless Patty Jenkins says “Yeah, Zack actually did literally nothing. His name was only there because he bribed the credits guy,” he helped write Wonder Woman. I’m not sure why this is so difficult to grasp for you people; in loads of interviews and such it has been discussed how he helped world-build with Patty and had a writing and producing credit and even had a cameo in the movie and how he felt “proud” of its success.

            Not sure about that. How do you define “hit”? - Money made? Critical reception? General audience reception?
            I’m not trying to give Snyder credit - HE ALREADY GOT IT, lol! YOU GUYS are the ones that are clearly driven insane BY HIS CREDIT, and so constantly keep trying to say he actually didn’t do anything, even though he was credited. LOL, and WE’RE the conspiracy theorists XD
            If you actually read all of my messages in context I actually only mentioned his helping write WW because someone (once again) claimed he wrote MoS/BvS and insulted his writing accordingly, which is not only ill-informed (since he didn’t write them) but hypocritical (since they loved WW and yet say Snyder is a bad writer), since he helped write WW.

            I have no idea why you brought up Nolan and BB (screenplay co-credit). He obviously “helped write” it to a greater extent than Snyder (story co-credit) “helped write” WW. Btw, Nolan has screenplay credits on 9 of his 10 films; on 2 he is the only credited writer. Snyder has 3 screenplay credits; none by himself. Nolan is a full-time writer-director. Snyder is a director, sometime-writer.

            I have errands to do on Earth today; I don’t have time to visit the mythic land in which audiences liked BvS as much as they did WW. We’ve debated its existence too many times already.

            You do know that Donner's Superman isn't the only one template for Superman right ? the goofy and clumsy guy thing is something from the past... but a competent filmmaker can manage to balance the best aspect of the positive, confident and optimistic Superman with a modern tone... but he has to make the right choices in term of depiction of the character with his personnality and stories... wich is something that Snyder didn't do at all because his Superman was always lost and clueless in this world for two movies (and apparently he was about to do the same thing again with his JL cut...). So yeah people didn't like this so called vision of the character because he was too unbalanced and grim and dark (yup whether you like it or not, that's how we perceived this nihilistic take on Superman).

            He was supposed to be a symbol of hope and unfortunately he ended up being Batman#2 dark, depressed and a brooding guy with a red cape...

            Maybe its because the humor is forced? Humor is fine in these movies, only when used well in certain situations. Instead of just thrown in to remind you to try and have a good time like what much of that added Whedon humor was doing in JL. And especially when you take a film that is supposed to carry the story over from two previous films in a set trilogy and the humor is laid on so thick, that it destroys the continuity of the previous films' tone.

    I bet Zacks version of superman will be the one that is remembered for good or worse. The handling of Superman was the worst part of JL, and that is on Whedon and WB. Superman's resurrection was one of the things I looked forward too the most in JL and it was a dud. You have all this mythology on Supes resurrection and none of it was used. No black solar suit , no regeneration chamber, no codex was explained at all. Yea Cyborg mentioned his cells being asleep but still they mishandled this whole fucking movie and for what to please Marvel fanboys who only wanted to shit on it the chance they got. Yea Whedon got superman alright, he took out the moments a lot of us really looked forward too. The scene when clark tell Lois " so I guess thats a yes' and mentions the ring was a great emotional moment that had no cgi and they removed it for no reason, That was a Snyder scene by the way. Snyder made me care about superman MOS is one of the best comic book movies ever and I didnt like that he killed Zod but let me say this. That was his vision and choice to do that, and it was an REALISTIC version of these characters obviously Superman didnt want to kill ZOD look at the scream right after , that always gives me goosebumps. He killed the last of his kind to protect a family from EARTH, yet you people say thats no Superman foh already. SO superman is resurrected and he's the true superman , why cuz he's smiling and telling jokes lol smh ok if you say so.

      You my friend are right on about Supes killing Zod. I absolutely loved Snyder's version of these movies...BvS theatrical cut should have been the extended version them everything would have been alright with that movie for the most part.... WB should have left Snyder alone and let him do what he wanted also so what if the movie would be over 3 hours long I would have rather it been fully fleshed out than rushed along.... The only thing I like that may have been Whedon's was when Aqua man was sitting on wonder woman's lasso.... They should have left Zack Snyder alone he was good for it I don't care what anybody says.... Now we were going to see more marvel like movies and even though I like marvel movies Snyder's vision and tone was well received and needed as far as I'm concerned.

        I just think JL was a unique situation, bad marketing and publicity behind the scenes. Too much WB interference and reshoots. Along with releasing 2 weeks after Thor 3 which had a lot of good reviews and nothing was heard behind the scenes. I love Snyder's realistic version instead of Whedon's marvel formula but I acknowledge that maybe Whedon would of did better if he started the movie from scratch instead of being rushed to make a deadline. I wanted Zack's version from beginning to end let me be clear. WW was a success because she was true to her character and Patty Jenkins was allowed to make her movie with no WB interference. WW had humor and color and good story that made sense and was a solid origin movie for WW. Im only worried that WB will stick to what worked with WW instead of trying to push the art forward and try new bold ideas. I don't mind DCEU movie having humor and being a lil lighthearted but the tone should be consistent and have a balance. I do think DCEU movies work best more serious and darker and i feel fans respond more to it. SS failed because WB changed the tone of what it was originally supposed to be and they did a lot of other stupid shit. The DCEU has all the ingredients to be successful the issue is there to many chefs in the kitchen (WB) lol. They should release the Zack ultimate edition just to make things right with the fans and move forward get things in order and plan things out

    I feel that Snyder and Co. were trying to play the long game with Superman. Instead of getting all of him from the beginning, they tried to build him up. They chose to use his emotional turmoil and existential crises as a building block rather than an afterthought. So, it wasn't really "Snyder's darker take" vs. "the 'true' Superman." It was all one character who actually experienced hardships in order to really figure himself out.

    I, for one, am very happy with that choice because it connected very directly with me, and that was comforting. When I was a kid, it was cool seeing Superman only fight crime and villainy and save people. But as an adult, and after having experienced a lot of what goes into life, I really appreciated seeing a lot more of Clark's humanity.

            The story he chose was the bigger problem i think, and that is what he should regret. Dude has a hard-on for Frank Millers TDK, and wanted that older, world weary Bat to fight Superman. It should have been a Worlds Finest type story instead imo.

            It makes a lot more sense to me for Batman and Superman to fight when Superman is still new to the planet, and of questionable trust - especially when Batman is hitting a lifetime low for a lot of realistic, understandable reasons.

            I cannot rationalize a worthy situation employing a Clark and Bruce who have become best friends and allies as we know them in the comics, over a period of decades, where they would then fight the way they did in TDK Returns. Superman had to become a government stooge and betray his standards and principles for no good reason to contrive that conflict, and I just don't find that compelling.

            World's Finest should be the next Batman/Superman movie post-JL, with Batman and Superman reconciling their misjudgment of each other now that Supes is alive again, and learning to respect each other through working together. Maybe they'll go after the Legion of Doom together.

            The tension of their recent conflict and Batman's regret would be there to cause us to care about them becoming friends, and it would be perfect. That thread was conveniently still left hanging untied in JL.

          Warner brothers wanted to cut the run time down on the theatrical cut.... they messed that up. I remember leaving the theatre wanting to like it more but I told my brother 7/10 at best.... A lot of things I did not understand.... Come to find out the things that they cut out were so pertinent to the story it was ridiculous. I remember watching reviews wanting them to be good and they were half and half.... then the extended version came out and it was like a complete turn around.... people's comments were like apologizing for the prior comments.... WB should have let the man make the movie as ling as he wanted to flesh it out. They left out stuff like the reason superman couldn't see the bomb at the court house...i didn't understand it till I seen the extended version... Sometimes the boss needs to back up and let their guy just work.... Titanic was long and nobody complained about that run time. I like the extended version of BvS personally. Doomsday could have been better but.... Whatever you know

      Yes. I agree and I would add, people always try to dismiss the ultimate failure that Superman Returns was, we are talking about one of the highest budgets ever given to a movie at the time ($275M for production alone not including marketing) which grossed a total of $391M globally. This is coming from a director who had great success with 2 X-men films along side a 76% RT score and the audiences responded with with a resounding thud of apathy and forgetfulness.

      Zack comes in and brings in a game changer with MOS, which until this day has become one of the most divisive, polarizing, loved and talked about films ever made in the superhero genre. Why? Because Zack had the balls to go deeper and bring something new and fresh to a character that had become a second class citizen. I believe Zack made mistakes in MOS but even though I didn't agree with everything he did, I still appreciated and enjoyed MOS and the rewatch ability of it is incredible. The visuals, the soundtrack, the history, Krypton and his beginning arc and world reaction was engaging and mesmerizing. MOS was a box office success and DVD monster with only 4 films in the superhero genre beating it to date and began a new type of superhero film that I'm glad we got to see.

      It's just too bad that we never got to see the finished trilogy the way Zack intended and ended up with a Frankenstein of a film. I hope WB fast tracks a MOS sequel and we get to see the finish product on the big screen. We need to see a Braniac live action film ASAP!

        You know, I just rewatched Superman Returns not too long ago, and it was...strange. Routh did a great Christopher Reeve impression, and his Superman-ing was fantastic (the airplane and rooftop heist scenes are awwwwwesome). I had just forgotten how emotionally conflicted his Superman was, as well. I don't remember any kind of feedback to that movie because I wasn't neck-deep in internet forums 11 years ago, but he was noticeably conflicted about stuff. I really liked it. It's a real bummer that Superman is not really allowed to struggle with his emotions on-screen (with some fans, mostly).

        The peeping tom scene was a little weird though.

          Routh was the best part of the film, for sure. I enjoyed his emotional weight (and continue to in Legends of Tomorrow), and I would have loved to have seen more to do with his investigation of Krypton to tie the story together into something more interesting and meaningful.

          I agree Superman Returns had some good things going for it; it just needed to find a bigger, more resonant message, and I would have forgiven anything that didn't strike well with me (well, most anything :P).

          That airplane scene. Unf.

          I did too but couldn't like it anymore. It was so campy and weird. Like wehne he landed the plane and said "Statistically flying is still the safest way of travel" Suuuuuper cringe :D Also, did you watch Donner's cut of Superman 2? Much better movie that original. People will see it the same way when we'll get Zack's version.

            I agree with the campy weirdness of it all. But, for me, it kinda fell in line with the original. I loved that crap as a kid, but the camp is much more noticeable as an adult.

          Brain vs brain basically. We’ve seen the power of Superman physically plenty of times so it would be great to see some focus on his mind. His fortress of solitude and kryptonian tech. In today’s technological society that we are so dependent on, it would be a great adversary for Supes, plus a good opportunity to have some cool Cyborg scenes if done correctly now that he’s been introduced.

            Personally, I'd want for Supes to handle this on his own--mind to mind as you said and show a new side to Supes and his intellect to "track down a lead" so to speak in figuring out Brainiac and his plot and not just be in the right place at the right time like he's often shown as a hero or as a reporter because of his quickness to be on the scene. But clearly, Cyborg getting in on this is a great idea and one I hadn't considered. Great suggestion. Either way works to me, but it's a great way to keep Cyborg relevant and in the DC loop as he works up to his solo debut. I'd be down for that if they went that route.

            The main reason I included him is that with the introduction of Cyborg and his abilities in JL, it would be impossible for Braniac to get involved with technology and Cyborg not be aware of it somehow, is all. A small part that keeps the JL relevant and keeps him in the minds of fans.

      I feel like Snyder simply didn't understand the character, as he himself admitted before being chosen as Man of Steel's director that he preffered other types of comic books and such. I feel like he stuck Superman in a monotonous tone throughout 2 movies and that WB didn't want to push JL out to actually hire someone to rewrite the character while keeping in mind his two previous appearances.
      I loved Man of Steel, but damn. He should have evolved a bit more in BvS. Unfortunately, you barely saw any progression in that movie, regarding his character, so they made 2 movies' worth of character development in just one (Justice League), while barely even appearing in it.
      Oh well, Aquaman should be fun, I guess.

      I think Snyder's fresh take and long game realist approach was what appealed to the WB execs from the get go, especially after the realistic take with Nolan's Batman trilogy being so lucrative. But unfortunately, there's no real way to warn fans their game plan with launching DC and leading with Superman that they're going this route, except but to do it and hope it's received openly.

      Then, WB received MoS with mixed reviews regarding the darker takes and realistic viewpoints on Superman and the company took a step back for a second and got nervous with the game plan. They were confident things would work out as they did with Nolan and Batman and saw a gamble worth taking, but being new to finally opening up the DC comic book universe on this scale and reviving the Superman movie fandom, they weren't ready for the backlash and figured if we do what we've done before, we'll be fine.

      But Supes is another beast and another way of entertaining and folks wanted the more idyllic fantasy that comes with Supes and his DC canon than the reality they thought could use established by Nolan and Batman.

      Then, WB reluctantly went into BvS because they long had the game plan to get Bats and Supes on screen and with the hopes that Snyder could win the people over.... but unfortunately, more mixed reviews show up and they turn on him and his ideas as reviews weren't favorable. They couldn't stomach another one from him in Justice League that would stir up more of the same.

      I will always appreciate Snyder's start for us because if not, DC probably still would not have launched today. He did some compelling work in MoS with his use of realism, but many just couldn't handle it. Poor DC has been on a learning curve from jump street, but I am still hopeful with all the restructuring taking place (especially among the executives and cutting the dead weight) that they will get their act together from the ground up all over again, make DC's storied canon their foundation, and find the more efficient way to attack their upcoming films going forward, now that they know the audience they're working with. Patty Jenkins showed it can be done with WW and hopefully upcoming keystone properties like Aquaman will show the same.

      It is a "Give It To Me Now" audience for sure that we have today. But my hope is that this same audience won't be confused with also being a "Give It To Me Straight" audience. "Straight" as in what we should expect from these characters without jumping off the deep end.

      To be blunt in a manner of speaking, Snyder and WB thought they could treat Bats like Supes by doing something fresh, realistic (which translated to dark) and full scale without much resistance and then come around to a fully idealized Supes by the end of his journey... but Supes is another level of icon in his idealist sense and it needed to be recognized for its success with folks from the jump. Seems like most folks were still reeling from the themes attached to Superman Returns and then WB decided to give folks another radical change that still left some pissed.

      It just seems that dealing with DC and the ideals that surround each hero has to be addressed head on without wavering for story's sake in regard to its future success. You can't please everyone, but we do know we can please the majority. You can have the imagination for sure.... it's encouraged, but not go off the deep end with what people know, love, and expect. With lesser popular heroes and the personalities and ideals they embody, they may be able to get away with more, but not the core. It's why MoS and BvS were received with mixed reviews while Wonder Woman was a virtual overall success with everyone. I totally understand that there will always be Snyder fans in this DC Universe because he brought a great approach... but folks certainly want to cut to the chase about the characters they love and not come about it in a roundabout way... especially with the greatest icon in Superman.

    Besides WB having some stumbling blocks on its first couple of movies, there is still hope and a chance to salvage the DCEU. And I hope that they really learned their lesson this time for the 3rd time lol. Just make these solo movies for now let them be great with no meddling by WB and from there lil by lil since they dont have to introduce any new charters at the moment let them build up their solo movies aside from WW 2 and SS2 with the Injustice league in the background post credit scenes until we get JL2. Aquaman, Shazam, and WW 2 ,SS 2, then have Flashpoint, The Batman , MOS 2. 2020 we would Green Lantern Corps, JL2, Nightwing, Batgirl, ....The problem with the DCEU was that they rushed it and WB meddling made it worse but now that they can focus on just solo characters they can find success if they get good directors and actors and let these people do their jobs.

    DC and Warner Bros. thought they cracked it with Nolan Batman films and that was the magic formula to do superhero movies from now on, even though a dark, gritty, humorless take on Superman was always going to be divisive.

        I don't particularly like the forced humor of Marvel movies, but MoS and BvS were simply too self serious and ended up coming off pretentious, possibly because Snyder is too heavy handed and lacking subtlety as a director in the themes and imagery he inserts into his films.

          Well the Jesus imagery is pretty common and obvious with Superman.

          And humor in both of films were mostly too subtle. Some of the humor is plainly obvious like Perry's "Water wet" line or Aflred's sass. But there were some humorous moments that I think flew over some people's heads because the film wasn't trying to jam them into their faces. For me, I didn't catch Superman's quip to Lex until my third viewing of BvS because Superman said it with a very straight face, and the scene didn't have a "laugh" pause for audiences.

    It was fitting he had a cartoon lip the entire time because Superman felt like a cartoon in JL to me.
    He didn't seem like a real person and he certainly didn't seem like the same Superman we'd seen in MOS or BvS. His jokes and mood felt so forced, because they were. Studio mandates thrown in at the last minute without proper time to polish the rewrites or reshoots. At least in MOS and BvS he was consistent.
    Superman from the Timmverse is my favorite Superman. He's well balanced. He feels like a real person. He's layered. I feel like that's what we almost had here.
    If they hadn't gone so overboard with the jokey corny Superman in JL, but did make him a bit more optimistic, we would have seen a transformation to the character that felt natural. Snyder's MOS, BvS, JL trilogy was meant to be about his becoming Superman anyway and Debra Snyder said JL was going to be the most optimistic of the three during BvS's release.
    I can't help but wonder if we would have ended up with a more natural and realistic change to his character if Snyder got his trilogy.
    The Snyder haters would have been upset, but they didn't show up to this film anyway and we're rebooting now without a properly finished trilogy. Nobody is happy. Kinda sucks.

    It was clearly designed to imitate the Nolan aesthetic - even down to calling it "Man of Steel" like "The Dark Knight" as well as draining the colour from the screen to emphasise the "seriousness" the movie was supposed to articulate.

      It was not drained of color, it just wasn't over saturated and campy. It was Superman in our real world, with real colors.

      I wouldn’t say it was imitation when Christopher Nolan was actually the one developing the movie and the story along with David S. Goyer, the writers of TDK Trilogy. They simply chose Zack Snyder to tell their story.

    With Man of Steel I only had gripe with the character. When Pa Kent died Clark should've tried to save him, maybe giving his dad a heart attack, and have that be the reason Clark is scared to reveal his superpower true self. The fight with Zod would have been better executed if Snyder focused more on Supes struggling, bleeding and getting bruised for the first time.

    With BvS I think Snyder wanted to deconstruct why Superman does what he does, in the comics it's because he can and enjoys helping people, with also a strive for prefection like in Hitman #34. Instead we got that this is his world and Lois makes the negatives worthwhile. He really needed a good save the cat moment in the first half of BvS, the closest we got was when he rescued the little girl in Mexico.

    I always felt that this was the plan all along. I remember reading some where in a interview with Zack Snyder years ago, that he wanted to show the DC characters earn who they are. And knowing what we know now, with all the leaked info on what was deleted/taken out of Zacks cut... Justice League was suppose to be the first time we see Superman become the character we all know and love, Batman returns to the justice driven character we all know and love and so on... I'm fasanated by Zack's take on DC. The more I watch them the better they get, the clearer i see the direction it was leading the audience in. Man of Steel till this day is my favorite comic book movie. Too bad we never got to see how Zack would've presented Superman to us in all his iconic glory instead of the rushed, hodgepodge, frankenstein variation we ended up with, yet i still managed to somewhat enjoy (nevermind the creepy, fakey, upper lip cgi).
