'Justice League' crosses the $500 million box office milestone

Justice League hit a box office milestone this week. According to Forbes, the Zack Snyder superhero movie crossed $500 million on Tuesday. Forbes estimates that it's at about $505 million as of today as it heads into its third weekend at the box office.

Justice League got off to a slow start, with DC Films' lowest opening yet. Right now the big question is whether or not it will finish as the lowest grossing DC Films movie ever. To avoid that label, it will need to make more than Man of Steel's $668 million.

I think Justice League has about two more weeks to make most of the money it's going to make. On Thursday, December 14th, Star Wars: The Last Jedi will hit theaters and own the box office.

        You really need to take an honest, objective look at the issue and stop trying to dismiss this as another puerile DC vs. Marvel argument.
        WB should have delayed the film. It would have given them – especially Snyder – more time to step back and correct the problems with the film. It would've cost less since Cavill would have been done with his Mission: Impossible gig and they wouldn't have had to pay even more to digitally erase that mustache.
        But unqualified studio heads need to make their annual bonuses so they can afford those luxurious lifestyles.

        "Justice League" has not made money at the same rate as "Ragnarok." In the first two weeks "Justice League" has been averaging roughly $20 million/week less than "Ragnarok." That number is likely to increase in its third week. Not that it matters because, as I said," the success of "Ragnarok" has nothing to do with the failure of "Justice League."

        I am only using information gathered by BoxOfficeMojo. Hold my hand and pay attention.
        According to their statistics, "Ragnarok" made ~$155 million in its first week and ~$70.6 million in its second.
        "Justice League" made ~$130 million in its first week ($25 million less than "Ragnarok") and ~$50 million in its second week ($14.8 million less than "Ragnarok").
        Average $25 million and $14.8 million and you should get $19.9 million. (I generously rounded up when I said "Justice League" averaged roughly $20 million/week less.)
        Where do you get your "BS" information? Do you simply make it up to suit your bias?

        In the interest of posterity, "Justice League" has just passed the $600 million mark internationally yet it is still lagging behind the weekly pace of "Thor: Ragnarok" by $13.5 million in its third week. I do not see it doing much better once "Star Wars: The Last Jedi" opens this weekend. Please do not take this personally.

  If it wasnt for Kevin Sixflagshara and Greg stupidman none of this had happened.. Hope they decide to choose someone with great knowlede of filmmaking rather than a businesman, Geoff needs to be a comic advisor rather than a DC Films President, that type of roles need to be strictly to people that understand the industry and have screen writing experience, someone with great judgement. A comic writer aint the same as a screenwriter.

        The studios only receive about 50% of domestic box office sales and 40% from overseas with the exception of China where they only get 25%.
        Justice League will not break even at the box office.

        With the exception of the recently emerging Chinese market, those numbers have been an industry standard for decades. I'm not sure why you would imply otherwise. Feel free to apply them to any feature film and see for yourself.
        Industry analysts are reportedly expecting WB to take a $50 million hit on Justice League. I can't say I'm surprised since WB has had a terrible track record trying to manage DC films. They don't seem to trust the people they hire.
        But that's what you can expect with a non-creative in charge of a film studio, someone who's never shot a frame of film, never written a screenplay, and never done anything artistic in his career.

As much as the production of this movie felt like a mess, it's really not a bad film.
WB really brought the bad press onto themselves (ever since BvS interference), as I think JL would have been a great movie if they ONCE AGAIN let Snyder have creative freedom.
The fact that Suicide Squad will most likely make more than this is an absolute joke. Now THAT was a bad film - the only real dud as far as I'm concerned in the DCEU.

  Yeah it’s super bizarre. The second movie with a talking racooon and a walking tree made more movie this year than the first ever Justice League film. The third reboot of Spider-Man made more money than the first ever Justice League film. The third Thor film(previously a B-list character) made more money than the first ever Justice League film.
  If not for Logan, Justice League would be the lowest grossing superhero movie of 2017. That’s just plain unbelievable. What’s this world coming to?

    The fact that Logan didn't make bank blows my mind too...That was an actual film, not bubble gum.
    I was disappointed with Spider-man & feel like Marvel is such a machine that they all fall into the same type of pattern/feel. Do any of the more recent MCU movies have any type of unique director-driven touches to them? It sounds like Thor did it's best Guardians impression too.
    I'm just tripping out that (like you said) the first ever FUCKING JLA MOVIE that was decent is tanking. I'm just trying to understand it.

      There are a lot of factors to understanding it, but, honestly, a lot of it is simply culture and the current climate in what's popular. That's also why Squad did as well as it did despite the issues you or I have with it.
      Second to that is probably all the production drama, and the clickbait headlines that suggest other kinds of drama. That stuff puts a heavy 'dirty' stigma on these films, and people are turned off. There was a ridiculous amount of that stuff immediately post-BvS leading all the way through to JL - more than I've ever seen.

      Logan done extremely well though and made Fox a lot of money, considering its a really violent R-Rated comic book film only makes it more impressive it made those numbers. Its done so well that Fox are considering doing a X-23/Laura sequel with the same director, R-Rating and tone.

      Logan made plenty of "bank." It profited $156.5 million for Fox.
      By comparison BvS profited $118 million, The LEGO Batman Movie profited $63.4 million, and Wonder Woman profited $205.6 million.
      For an R-rated comic book flick, it did just fine.

  I agree it wasn’t bad. Not great, it had some flaws, bug it was good. I think the issue was ALL the bad mouthing by so called fans before it even came out. This movie was M/F by so many before it even seen the light of day. Fans of both director both M/F the others work. No matter how good this movie could of been, it would have not mattered. To many are not seeing it based on what they heard or read by people who have not seen it, pretty sad.

        Funny thing is i actually like the majority of DCEU films, i loved Wonder Woman and i like JL and Man Of Steel despite their faults. Its only BvS and SS what i don't like, by the way child i've been reading Batman News far longer then i bet you have, i was reading this site back when The Dark Knight Rises was released so i guess i've stuck with this site 5-6 years now, i stick with this site because their mostly free of the bullshit you find on other comic book sites and this site also does the best reviews for comics as well.       Its true though for the first 2-4 weeks Star Wars will dominate the box office, i may have mentioned Jumanji 2 but i actually think that will flop despite the Rock being in it because its launching 5 days after Star Wars what is suicide, unlike other movies Star Wars brings tons of repeat watches, i bet 95% of opening night watchers like myself will be seeing it again a week later or sooner for instance. By the way i work at a cinema and have for some time so i know how this shit works and i also follow news on all this stuff and don't go by headlines so yeah i know my stuff. Hell WB have put back WW 2 from Dec to Nov because of Star Wars and WW right now is the golden child of DC what everyone and their grandparents love right now.

I think it can break the $700 million mark but I hope it stops somewhere after that. I feel a bit bad to say I hope WB loses money but after all... Money will do the most talking and it should be a signal to WB/CEOs that they have to stop meddling so much with a DC's film production. Let the filmmaker make the film he/she intends to. It went well with Wonder Woman but they screwed up BvS' theatrical release, Suicide Squad and JL...
Fingers crossed that Wan does not get the CEOs breathing down his neck and that the finished film will be all his, without studio interference. I know that Squad 2 gets enough time on script development (since they can't get the cast together until late next year), Batman is too big a project to meddle too much with Reeves' vision (and thank god it doesn't have a release date yet) and Sandberg seems to be doing just fine with Shazam!
Must say I'm rather glad it's going to take more than a year to get to Aquaman. I think audiences need to have some DC time off, and so does WB.
Hoping for the best with Aquaman, I think Ready Player One will be the first teaser trailer possibility.

      Honestly i wouldn't be surprised if Reeve's Batman is set in its own universe and not connected at all to the DCEU. I agree the DCEU isn't over but thats only because Aquaman has already been made and Gal's and Patty's WW is too fucking big to just chuck away. Shazam i expect will be its own standalone thing not in the DCEU, i also think Rock's Black Adam film won't happen unless Shazam is a hit. As for GCS, i don't think that will happen, we have had fuck all news for that film and it only seemed to be announced as a reactionary move because of SS sort off success, JL under-performing could make WB just think fuck it and cancel it. SS2 could happen but i don't know anymore. Green Lantern Corps i think is up the air right now and i think Flashpoint will only happen if WB want a Day Of Future Past reboot.

    Yeah Campea gets crazy, like that, if you listen to enough of his videos. No need to reboot, just re-direct, and enough with these team up movies. Make more solo DC hero movies for awhile. You could start your own You Tube show, as a critic, and get enough respect if you are entertaining and exciting enough on camera, and get people to side with you on your opinion of what is good and not. That video of Campea talking reboot, needs to be watched by himself over and over again both drunk and sober so he can get the full affect of how rediculous he sounds. Chris would you reboot the whole thing at this time?

  At this pace, in two weeks it should be at 650m. After that it would be a hard crawl to 700. I think it doesnt hit 650.
  We all know Aquaman is a standalone but what exactly is their plan for WW? A trilogy with Diana i bet. Not a horrible idea but right now with absolutely zero direction for the future i almost wish they scrap that franchise as well. WW was only as good as Chris Pine allowed it to be and now we hear from Patty that WW will have another love interest. They know Gadot cant lead the film.

        You guys need to rewatch the parts where Bruce an Diana argue. Here's some of the dialogue:
        {Diana Prince: You should move on from mourning for your parents.
        Bruce Wayne: [mean] You're one to talk, you ran away for hundred years because your boyfriend died!
        Bruce Wayne: [to Wonder Woman] Superman was a beacon to the world... Why aren't you? You're an inspiration, Diana. You don't just save people; you make them see their better selves. And yet, I'd never even heard of you until Luthor lured you out by stealing a picture of your dead boyfriend. You shut yourself down for a century, so let's not talk about me moving on!

        And then she later says something about all the people who died are Steve Trevor to her. Basically she's afraid to lead, her cynicism has nothing to do with her actual feelings for Steve. And then at the end of JL, she leads the fight to Steppenwolf as batman rides off in the batmobile.

        That poor dialogue was put in place to cover up the undeniable fact that WB decided to fast track both BvS and JL. In defense of BvS Zack did the impossible and made that film work very well without being able to lay groundwork. There was zero development that took place in JL for any of the characters. There is so much wrong with the film i dont know where to even start. Flash and Cyborg actually dug up a grave. That is all.

        I respectively disagree about that part having poor dialogue. The delivery felt real because of their frustration. And I also disagree about development not occurring for most of the characters:
        1. Cyborg - was the only one who had a full character arc in the film. Going from brooding to finally accepting himself by the end of the film
        2. Bruce - His development occurred over two films BvS and then JL
        3. Diana - Finally accepted her role as a leader.
        4. Clark - finally the big guy. He's had a character arc over 3 films.
        The ones we need to see more from are Aquaman and Flash but I think that's why they have the upcoming solos.

        Blame Snyder for that, he had the genius idea of having Diana say "i turned my back on the world a long time ago" in BvS, they needed to explain that as well as not contradicting the events of Wonder Woman. Anyway as Diana says in JL she still saved and helped people but done it in the shadows and made sure she was never public with it.
        As for grieving for Steve for that length of time well yeah that happens when a loved one dies, have you ever lost a GF/BF or Wife/Husband? Because you don't just magically stop grieving after X amount of time, my Nan lost her husband over 15 years ago and to this day she's still grieving and hasn't been with anyone else. Steve was the first person she ever loved and the first man she's ever been with so yeah it makes sense she struggled to get over him especially when she's immortal and will be stuck with that loss forever.

        Agree. I adore Gal and her Diana, but Chris Pine did carry the movie. It spoke volume for Patty Jenkin's ability as a director. She let Gal shine in action scenes but when it required in-depth acting it was Pine and the other more experienced actors and actresses that did the heavy lifting.

        Nah Gal was the star in my opinion, Pine was awesome but it was Gal was my highlight and captured everything what makes Wonder Woman who she is.

        Except for the small fact that Gal's acting ability is limited. Her omitted line from JL stating how Cyborg was composed of 'bio-mechanical' and such, was delivered very poorly and is a knock on her acting. There were a couple more lines in JL from her that also made me cringe.

        It's Gal's accent. WW proved she can emote, she can act. That's actually one of the coolest things about Gal as Wonder Woman: being Israeli means she's Mediterranean just like Diana is in the comics, being Greek and all that.

        Well I disagree. Not saying she is oscar worthy but she is growing. I felt her acting was strongest in JL. I will conceed that she is probably the weakest actor out of everyone in the JL but like I said, she's growing and that's good.

    So far it's not a narrative mess, tbh. Superman's choice to act lead to an intensity of activity in superhero world. Hell even Wonder Woman decided to step out into the open. So far it makes sense. It looks like they're building towards Legion of Doom. They're already focusing on villains with Squad 1 and 2 and don't forget Black Manta is in Aquaman.
    Besides, do we the audience really have to know exactly what their plan is? Sure it looks like Wonder Woman will get her own trilogy, standing more on it's own than Superman's but is that a bad thing? Musty say I'd love to see a trilogy for the other JL heroes as well.

      Yes, i absolutely believe we deserve to see a plan for the franchise. We have been lied to so many times... I dont want or need a 15 year plan but clear vision on weather or not this world is going forward is warranted.
      I so hate the idea of this LoD. Havent they learned a lesson from this debacle JL? But thats just it when it come to DC and WB, they never ever learn any lessons.

        The post credit scene with Deathstroke should be a good sign. The idea of LoD is perfect for DC. A franchise where they focus equally on the villains and their heroes.
        I can see them sprinkling post credit scenes about each of the villains being recruited to join the LoD. Then in JL2 could be a big battle between heroes and villains we recognize instead of another CG villain.

Lets face it, theaters are a dying breed. Compare the TV's during the MoS debut to currently. We now have screens with 4K and Dolby Vision HDR Technology across the landscape, and with surround sound. When you basically have your own theater in your living room, why pay $40 to $50 for two, or over $100 for a family per movie, when you can watch it at home for much, much cheaper. My point, I assume the studios are going to have a harder time getting seats in cushions going forward, which leaves little error in the film making process. Digital viewing at home must be factored into these historical comparisons.

I am saying it is more competitive and leaves less room for "mistakes" as compared to the past because cost and increase in home tech is a factor. Incomes going down, ticket prices going up.         The box office is global now, why do you think the global total usually outsells the domestic market and your graph is not taking that into account. You ever heard of a movie Wolf Warrior 2? It’s currently the fifth highest grossing movie in the world, it’s made over 870M worldwide becoming their highest grossing film ever, domestically here it made less than 3M. Box office no longer depends on domestic volume to be a success anymore, JL will be saved financially because of its global BO and not because of it’s domestic numbers. So before you state something as “fact” make sure it’s complete first!

  I don't have an IMAX-sized screen, nor do I have an IMAX-sized sound system. I also do not own an extremely comfortable reclining La-Z-Boy chair (my theatre of choice only has extremely comfortable recliners). I'm not a fan of inflation, but such is the price to pay for capitalism - pun intended. I used to fill-up a car with gas for $20, but now have to spend double that. I used to get a cup of coffee for $1, which now costs over double that. A movie I'm very interested in seeing is well-worth $20 for an IMAX viewing for me.
  As a matter of fact, I don't even live in a house that is anywhere near capable of providing a viewing area as large as an IMAX screen.
  Edit: I think it's also important to take into consideration the fact that movie studios make a shitload more money from ticket sales over home video sales. People are still going to the cinema in very large numbers, and a lot of folks (me included) aren't interested in spending $1,000+ to try and replicate a (much smaller) theatre experience.

The studios are charging more for tickets due to lack of sales (ie more and more people are staying at home) and as a result, they are still making good profits. The consumer, the ones still attending theaters, are taking the hit. That trend is still continuing, but the model won't last and the studios know it....enter streaming services baby.
        As far as your EST, I am assuming that is downloaded digital material. Sure, the numbers are not high here, because streaming digital content is replacing it. Streaming is different than downloading to a hard drive. Why do you think the major studios are currently each building out their own streaming channels, and that includes DC? They wouldn't be doing this if home theaters are declining and theater sales are still "where it is at" in the market place.

  I agree, but I see that model changing in the future. There is a reason all the major studios, including DC/WB, are building out their own streaming channels (like Netflix.) I can see these new platforms as a jumping on point where studios would charge a premium if someone wanted to see a new movie on "release date." I am not saying theaters will die off completely. There are those that still want that experience. Drive-in theaters use to be the place to go see movies, now they are reduced to one every 200 miles, yet they are still around.

    Unless I travel about an hour, my local theaters still have tiny seats crammed together and the projection quality of a 1980's high school projector. There are many theaters that are not "state of the art" by any means. Drive in theaters are novelty experiences and compared to the theaters near me, more comfortable. However, unless you are on the west coast, weather has a factor to play in their success. One of the best selling points though is that you can also have sex in the back seat if the movie sucks. That is kind of hard to get away with in the theater.

    The whole in order of appearance thing doesn't take into account that the MCU started the whole universe thing, with no namers, and that since Avengers all its heroes are way more popular. The DCEU on the other hand started with big names but is currently trending downwards. Sort of the opposite. The 2 were neck and neck in averages, high 700's worldwide, DCEU's few movies living in that range, MCU all over the place, from 200's Incredible Hulk to 1.5 billion avengers. 4 movies over a billion! Well, thanks to this year, MCU's average is a bit higher, DCEU's, a lot lower.

I enjoyed MoS but a few of the nitpicks I have come from Goyer’s writing like the way Pa Kent died. Nolan even gave his blessing on MoS.   Even if it reaches 1 million. I signed the petition but I know the director cut will not be released. Not because of unfinished CGI but because it would be totally different from the movie that was released. Different scenes with Superman/ a different superman not that creepy one in the movie and maybe even a different ending. It would be a lot of a change from the theater cut and would confuse the audience with a different plot/motivations so they just can't release a different movie in blu ray in an extended universe where movies should follow. Snyder maybe even have had a different motivation/plot for Steppenwolf

The Television & Movies page, which announced the date of the Justice League trailer and DC series universe news, released yesterday some possible information on the future of the DC Extended Universe:
"It has been confirmed that the Snyder version of League really exists, the unused version of CGI takes approximately 2 hours and 10 minutes. The CGI version has 2 hours and 50 minutes. It's very unlikely to be released, there's a long way to go, and the plot has many differences from Joss Whedon's film. It can confuse the fans a lot".
I don't know what this page "Television & Movies" is. I read this here in Brazil, but I don't know it, does anyone here know?

  We have confirmation that Zack Snyder cut exists, the cut without CGI involvement is 2 hour 20 min( some where around that) and with light cgi and unfinished VFX movie stands at 2 hour 50 min
  so there is your confirmation the Zack Snyder cut is real. It is very unlikely that the cut will happen because Zack snyder cut have some scenes and decision which contradicts the current theatrical cut and it may confuse fans, so it will likely not happen cause the movie is something different in middle and end battle is different.
  We have word, WB is also still working on CGI for Flash deleted scenes and Cyborg scenes only 3-4 of them so the likely possibility is they will release a movie with some extended zack snyder scene and some deleted scenes. but the movie will not come in Zack Snyder cut we have this guaranteed

Considering they still haven't made back their budget, this isn't good. Kevin Tsujihara needs to resign including his ass kissing power buddies. How do you go from a billion dollar franchise like Batman, appoint Kevin Tsujihara, see the decline of DC movies, and still not see a problem? Good luck making a profit off this movie in two weeks. Then you'll have to wait until December 2018, a full year, without releasing another DC movie. Whoever thought a full year gap between these movies was a good idea needs to be fired, Kevin. Take this year to plan out your options while preparing to shut down Snyder's universe. Plan air tight movies and start over.

  Flash was supposed to come out March 2018 but a lot of directors dropped out and a lot prouduction drama behind the scenes , but having a year off to evaluate and get things right will be a good thing. Everything that has happened negatively I feel will hopefully benefit the DCEU in the long run , these are lessons and I feel the DCEU will be better because of it. WB should hire talented smart people , evaluate the state of the DCEU and honestly look at themselves as the problem and let these directors make the movies they are hired to make. JL was a big disappoint for me and it broke my heart because Zack wanted to make something more then what we got from WB. I feel like the DCEU can still recover because at the end of the day , these characters are beloved and the castings are great and people love them but JL was an unique case I feel. Bad marketing , bad publicity , removing Zack , changing the tone , it was doomed from the start and I don’t blame BvS. I blame WB for making Zack put out a chopped up movie and the 3 hour movie. People that hate Zack Snyder only hate because they are butthurt that he made Superman and Batman killers. If you take that away what else can you say ? Granted I didn’t like those decisions ether but you can look past that , it’s a movie and creative choices were made , and whether anybody like them that’s subjective.

    I'm not a fan of Snyder because even though he creates beautiful cinematography, his stories and characters are weak so he tries to amp up the missing life with grittiness and testosterone. I don't necessarily care that both men have killed people, but I feel a better story could've been made where they didn't have to do that. It's like the Spider-Man trilogies: yes the villains died but when it happened it sent an impact to how you saw the villain as a Frankenstein creature way with a characteristic that makes us feel bad for them despite what they've done. The DC villains we have now are just...evil. Also these stories get rewritten all the time for the studios and what they want more of along with producers. Either way, WB/DC needs an immediate system reconstruction and replacements.

Yeah once Star Wars is out JL has pretty much made all its going to get. I suspect it will make around 650-700 million, maybe a bit more if we are talking best case. Its pretty pathetic though that a JL film is only looking at those as the best case, a fucking Thor movie making more then a film starring all of DC's biggest heroes (minus Hal) goes to show how WB really fucked it all up, shame as i would love a JL sequel with the Legion Of Doom but sadly i can't see that happening at all now.

The movie’s still losing ground to all other DCEU movies every day. Justice League’s second Tuesday was $2.9 million. Man of Steel’s was $5.1 million, Suicide Squad’s was $6.2 million and Wonder Woman’s was a huge $8.8 million. Yes, those movies came out in the summer, but even BvS’ second Tuesday was $4.1 million.
So it’s all going to have to happen with foreign box office if Justice League wants to stay out of the basement.

        The 2 hour mandate, cgi mustache, 2 directors all mean dick to the general audience. We know this stuff, but your average movie goer had no idea.
        There was no complaints about the marketing until after the movie failed to hit $100 million opening weekend. If there was an issue beforehand, this forum would’ve been peppered with it for months.
        Homecoming came out couple weeks after Wonder Woman; neither affected the other’s box office run.
        The movie stands on it own. There’s no guarantee keeping a movie in the same tone as MoS & BvS would’ve made the box office breaking records. If people had issues with the tone previously, why would they suddenly pivot this time?
        JL isn’t a unique case. That’s more spin.

        You’re the second person on this site that’s suggested to me Superman should’ve been more seen in the marketing. I disagreed that would’ve moved the needle any further with that person as well. If the general consensus was this was an unlikeable Superman before, why would the general audience suddenly think different because he’s more in the marketing? Which I contend, was already the done. His logo was in the poster, his mug is out on merchandise, there were already multiple indicators he’s in the movie.
        If he would’ve been more prominent in the trailers, wouldn’t the criticism then be they fucked it up by not keeping the surprise reveal...a surprise?
        I stand by my assessment of the average moviegoer. They don’t know about mustaches, director swaps, & time limits beforehand. The bulk of the behind the scenes stuff I knew was by actively googling the movie periodically. I’d say the number of the general audience who knew about that stuff is small. Smaller still is the number who actually cared. They’re going off the final product, not the politics of the product.
        I understand you’re explaining your point of view of what happened. My initial comment was about blaming holiday savings as to why the movie isn’t doing stellar. Then it became about being a couple weeks after Ragnarok.
        I look at it this way, there are football games the refs screwed over my team and they lost. I never blame the refs. If my team played a solid game, then they’d overcome the ref intervention.
        If JL was a solid movie, it’d (and still could) overcome those other issues.
