'Justice League' gets beat by Disney's 'Coco' in second box office weekend

Justice League came in second place at the box office this weekend. It brought in another $60 million, short of the $71 million that Disney's Coco made. Justice League's 10 day total is now $172 million, finally putting it past the $166 million that Batman v Superman made in its opening weekend.

Variety notes that Justice League is the worst performer among the recent DC movies. Batman v Superman was already at $260.4 million after its first 10 days. Man of Steel made $210 million, Wonder Woman grossed $206.3 million, and Suicide Squad took in $222.6 million in its first 10 days.

With the international box office factored in, Justice League has made $481.3 million so far worldwide.

It'll be interesting to see if it can beat Man of Steel's $668 million box office total before its box office run is over. Let me know if you think it'll reach the $700 million mark in the comments below.

What are you thinking for the final worldwide gross for Justice League? I think (hope?) it can pass Man of Steel's $668M, but I think it'll come up short of Suicide Squad's $745M.

    Hardly . SS was near unbearable to watch. And I’m a huge DC Comics fans so I’m biased . But even with that was it fucking terrible . Justice League is somewhere in between MoS and BvS. . I doubt it makes 700 mil unfortunately and it’ll probably place last amongst the DC films . It just had to overcome way to many things and the odds were never in its favor . Have a strong feeling they will try to reset

        well we'll see where JL stands in terms of the BO in a few weeks. Unfortunately what messed up the BO for JL was mainly BvS. That movie turned a lot of people off. Lower box office doesn't mean its worse than Suicide Squad though

    That's your take. I just watched JL yesterday for the 4th time and the more I watch it, the more I am in love with it.
    My wife (who watched BVS but cldn't remember much), not a comic book reader or follower by any means) watched with me yesterday not knowing what to expect and she loved it. She even gave it a 9/10! And she didnt even like SS or BVS.
    Yes, there were issues with the film and some scenes look off (like Ezra saying how people are too slow and his take on brunch, his hair looks off and terrible and that surely is a reshoot scene), but overall its a fun and good movie.
    I firmly believe, without Marvel movies around, people will see this movie in a different light without those to compare or to align with.

      Not sure how you can love JL. It's such a painfully unlovable movie... I see it as a textbook example of a 7/10 film. No huge problems but just never a film that never strives for greatness in any way.

        To me, for a superhero team movie without backstories on any of the new characters like Flash, Cyborg or Aquaman etc., its pretty good if you ask me. Yes, Marvel has those solo films before moving on to the avengers but this is DC's take. The solo films later on. You have to understand that. This is DC.

  It's possible foreign audiences can save it from being a total disaster, but it would require a LARGE number that's greater than any of the DCEU movies so far (and that might be a tall order).
  Pirates 5 for instance made nearly 800 million because foreign grosses reached beyond 600 million. If JL can pull that number off, it could top out with 800+ million since it's at LEAST going to make it past 200 million domestic.
  But again, that's a TALL order and a "best case scenario". However, I do think it'll probably push past MOS and maybe land somewhere below SS. It's nearing 500 million now (481 million ww), so at the very least a 600 million gross is pretty much a guarantee.

  They only have a month to make decent money before Star Wars crushes them. Week 2 sales went down more than 50% since the 90 million weekend. Then after December they have January and February to get people in the theaters which is where movies go to die, unless you're Deadpool. So far they've only reached the half-point for breaking even, making WB's dependency on international ticket sales paramount. They will barely reach their break even point but most of their profit afterwards will be made from disc/download sales around summer time. Warner Bros. better learn from this disaster second time around.

      I think there's another factor too. Ben Affleck. Most of my friends and I like him as bruce Wayne, but I have friends and friends of friends who don't like him, period, much less as Bruce Wayne. And not because of that performance (tho personally I liked him more anger as an emotion in bvs than no emnition in JL), I think the general audience never liked the idea of batfleck. They made their mind up soon as the announcement was made, and bvs solidified that decision. JL wasn't even a good idea to make at all by that point. Just a thought, surely not the only factor.

        Dude can act yes but man it might be too late even for that, or rather too soon. People are certainly thinking back to tdk trilogy by now, so really Affleck has already done enough damage to outlast even him for a couple year at least. The cape and cowl are tainted. It washed off, ask George Clooney and Christian Bale, but it takes time. And no Bale wasn't great but his bat movies were minus one which still made enough bank to make quality not matter.

    Batman v Superman turned a lot of the audience off from going to see this. Had BvS been better received, more audiences would’ve went and saw JL, which would result in a bigger opening weekend. There’s no defending this.

        The film itself turned them off too. Lots went to go see Batman in BVS, it was the first Batman movie since the TDK trilogy (which is almost universally loved). That's why it was so front-loaded and made 50% of it's global revenue in the first week. The majority were disappointed. No problem with you liking it, but people still make fun of the Martha comment to this day. Just go on a Youtube video about Batman, chances are one of the top comments will be a Martha joke. You have to recognize the damage BVS did to the brand.

  I think JL's box office failure is the result of previous DCEU movies, not the actual movie itself.
  I thought it was a fun movie. I enjoyed it very much. And a lot of people seem to agree.
  The problem is that the movie was weak from the start (box office wise). Which means, people were not that excited for it to begin with. If it had a strong first weekend and a lousy second weekend, it would indicate a poor quality movie. Negative word-of-mouth. But that's not the thing here. It seems the general audience lost faith in this universe, so that's why less and less people flock to the theaters for it.
  Shame. I really wanna see this universe move forward.

That's honestly not bad because it means it didn't have a huge drop-off like Batman v Superman did. Justice League will have stronger legs than BvS, but not WW. I think it'll continue to dominate the foreign box office until Star Wars comes out as I don't see Coco appealing in China.

        It seems like that they don't ban every movie with supernatural element. Otherwise Resident Evil and Pirates 5 wouldn't be released because they feature undeads. So the censors took it case by case, they even consider the potential box office. If they deemed it won't get money, they won't release it. Just like what happened with Ghostbusters.

I think 720 million. No reset due to guarantee of Aquaman, likely Shazam and also Wonder Woman 2. Justice league will break even or gain very little at best. However if the movies above do well then I believe we will keep getting more. Plus Reeves Batman is also likely going to succeed with or without affleck

  Best route probably would be to just keep going and build a new foundation. Once they have regained trust then use Flashpoint to wipe out BvS, SS and maybe parts of JL.

I went to see this movie yesterday, it was damn good entertainment, characters were all fairly established and the chemistry between the actors was great. It sure had flaws but it wasn't as bad as everyone is making it out to be. It was a fun ride with a semi-decent soundtrack but in the long run it's probably gonna be forgettable. Pity that it's underperforming so much, I feel bad for the actors.

LOL But if not, 600 million will be a struggle, assuming JL is already out in all the major foreign markets. I'm hopeful that WB will respond like Fox did to FoX-Men: Apocalypse's (relatively) disappointing box-office performance. They basically just said f**k it, and kept moving forward with Dark Pheonix.

      Actually, that's part of what is keeping this "Snyder cut" hoopla continuing. I mean, David Ayer (even though he was lying) came right out and said there was no "director's cut" of Suicide Squad when rumors started circulating of a possible Blu-Ray release of one, so Snyder could too. That FX artist pulled no punches in saying there wasn't one after all.
      But then again, on reddit, one of the mods came out and said there WAS a Snyder cut, but didn't reveal any sources. Although it's reasonable to consider that Snyder himself is his source from vero.

I saw it a few days after it opened in 2D.
I was planning to see it a second time tomorrow in 3D, but I see my local theater cut back on screenings and eliminated the 3D showings altogether. They're so panicky. They want their money NOW. They could have been a bit more patient to allow for people returning for repeat viewings... but no.

A 56% drop (FSS vs. last FSS) would be OK on an average weekend, but look at the declines for the rest of last week's top 5: from 23% (Thor) to only 6% (Orient Express). The holiday weekend saved JL from a BvS-style 70% free fall.

  That drop on Thanksgiving is enough to blow up the “maybe it will run long like Wonder Woman” scenario. No way will WB finance another $250 million team-up movie until they’re confident there’s a successful new creative direction.
  And remember China is front-loaded this time. Several recent movies like Spiderman got the late $100 million China bonus, JL won’t get that.

Funny how immediately after the moderate success of SS, WB was quick to announce the Sirens headed by Ayer, and now nobody hears about it anymore. It's almost as if shortly after the announcement, some exec woke up and said, "Guys, what are were doing? The dude's a fukin idiot, we can't have him make any more movies."

I think its gonna finish with a total in or around $700 mil. Not a fantastic take by any stretch but if they can take the good foundation they have setup in JL and build on it, the franchise could turn out stronger than ever. Have a clear direction for each solo movie and the franchise as a whole, deliver high quality well made solo movies. Give every member time in the spotlight but keep the budgets reasonable. Build up a solid fan base with consistent good movies and build towards JL2 and then swing for the fences, this time it will be the event movie it deserves to be. Give us a Flash and cyborg movie, a MoS 2, The Batman, Green Lantern Corp, Martian Manhunter. I'm also looking forward to the Deathstroke movie but i feel it and movies announced like it, ie Nightwing, Batgirl etc should be smaller self contained movies used to pad out the universe.

  It's already being mapped out though. I mean, Aquaman is in the can and has a year for post-production. Jenkins is making Wonder Woman 2 the way she wants to and Sandberg seems to be on a roll on Shazam. O'Connor gets the time to write Squad 2 because the earliest moment the cast can actually be brought together to start shooting is at the end of next year. Reeves is still working on Batman too and that has no release date which for now is all the better.
  WB needs to quit with meddling so much with the productions. And Whedon should stay the hell away from anything DC related.

    Once each film is given the time it needs to be the best it can be and they have clear direction in which to take the universe thats all that matters. WB need to stop meddling, i completely agree as 90% of their choices have hindered rather than helped the franchise.

JL lost to a Mexican boy who plays a guitar, how embarrassing. It will definitely make over 700M looking at the basic multiplier though and probably closer to 800M when it’s all said and done. The global box office will help it get out of the red. But maybe this debacle might push WB to let Zack do his cut because I sure as hell won’t be buying this piece of mediocrity as is.

      I don’t know but according to articles others have posted on this site he’s still attached to WW2 as well. If you didn’t know he wrote the story for WW and that turned out pretty good according to box office, critics and audiences.

      Nice dodge, the JL members was the only positive consensus with JL. Ben and Gal were the only positive consensus with BvS theatrical cut. When it comes to the heroes Zack’s casting has been great and the rest of the majority of the world agrees.

My original statement was about them to which you tried to pass off as inconsequential, when in reality they are the best part of this fractured universe and expertly cast. And Amy Adams recognized status as an exceptional actress is demonstrated by 5 academy award nominations, 6 British film awards nominations and 2 golden globes all for acting. WB owns way more of the blame for the current status of the DCEU than anybody else.

    It would be better than what I saw. BvS theatrical cut is a mess but the UE was good just like MOS was good. Not great but good, but we will probably never know what Zack’s cut would have been.

Let’s put this in perspective a bit... Justice League is at 481 million global in ten days... Wonder Woman’s final box office was about 822 million global... in 161 days/23 weeks... it may not have started with guns blazing with a massive amount opening weekend but there is certainly some gas left in the tank. I think it’s possible for it to hit 700 million if not a little more. time will tell. Meanwhile the petition is still going strong at 142,994 signatures...

Yes but not higher than 750 mil. and that is if things go very well. So a plus minus 0 gain, if home media, toys and so on aren´t factored in. Meaning that a meaningful DCEU continuity is now 100% dead and The Batman films will start their own world building. WW sequels, an Aquaman followup if his film works and Squad spin-offs will remind us of what could have been and who knows? Maybe we will get GL and a new Superman reboot next decade if all that other stuff in the pipeline works out.
Poor Henry. You were too good and comic accurate for this world. Poor Cyborg too. The film version is better than anything else he has been in.
Another question will be if New Line ´s Shazam will still be firmly in this universe. They could just set it on Earth S and side-step any tie-in to anything for now and see what WB proper does with it´s characters.

Okay, so Deadline didn’t have a lot of color in the international roundup article. But JL is down 61 percent to $72 million international this weekend. It seems to be already open in all the major markets. So next weekend should be around 20 domestic and 36 foreign. I don’t see how it makes 200 more than what it has. I think we can start to say with confidence that 700 is out of reach.

well Disney is just owning the industry right now. Marvel, Star Wars and their animated masterpieces. Jungle Book was huge last year and that was not even a Marvel or SW movie.
And the biggest movie of 2017 ? Its Beauty and the Beast. Disney already grossed like 5 billion this year already and Star Wars: The Last Jedi is not even out yet. So we are looking at like at least 6 billion (!!!) for Disney this year.
It absolutely CRUSHES every other studio out there.
So this has not that much to do with Justice League's lack of success and more with Disney overwhelming amount of success. Even if Justice League and WW combined would have raked in 2 billion, WB would have still been crushed by Disney. There is no stopping Disney right now, they are sitting firmly on that throne right now and it will be years until they will be toppled from it again.

      All of those WB movies were pre-Avengers. If the dark knight trilogy had been released nowadays it would've bombed, because of barely any jokes or action scenes, hans zimmer soundtrack, dark filters, no post credits scene or eventual team up. Post Avengers WB movies like the Hobbit trilogy & the Fantastic Beasts movies reception is proof. You sure the industry is the only thing Disney is owning now? Or are the critics a part of that too?

    Disneys Beauty and the Beast alone has grossed over 1 billion. Add to that the 2.5 billion Marvel made, the 790 Million Pirates 5 have made, Coco AND the upcoming Star Wars and you are looking at nearly 6 billion.
