Zack Snyder hasn't seen 'Justice League' yet, wishes he could've finished it for fans

A hardcore Zack Snyder fan named Fiona shared a private conversation she had with the Justice League director on Vero, where Snyder admitted he hasn't seen the movie yet and apologized for not being able to finish it.

Fiona sent Snyder a screenshot of a letter she wrote, bashing Justice League's writer and other director Joss Whedon. Snyder simply replied with: "I will be honest I have not seen the film since I stepped away. You know I love these characters I wish only I could only have finished it for you and the others who love MOS [and] BvS".

It's been reported that when Snyder turned in his first cut of Justice League to Warner Bros. earlier this year, they weren't completely satisfied. That's when Joss Whedon was brought in to write new scenes. When Snyder was no long able to continue after a family tragedy, Whedon took over directing the movie as well.

Fans will probably always wonder how much different Snyder's original cut was, but unfortunately we'll probably never know for sure. At best, I think we'll get some deleted scenes on the Blu-ray, but I would not count on seeing an "Ultimate Edition" or anything like that.

  How can you blame Whedon? I'm no fan of Whedon but this is Snyder's film. About 80-90% is all Snyder. It's Snyder's fault for the failure of the DCU, good riddance.

    Just because Snyder directed the principle photography, it does not make it "his movie".
    Editing + CGI + 30-40% reshoots + 90-95% Superman and his fake CGI face + Elfman's score + most dialogue + some inappropriate scenes (i.e. Flash falling on WW's boobs) = 100% Whedon.
    Again, just shooting the movie does not make it "your" movie.

        Superman saying "Do you bleed" is all on Snyder though. And that was the worst line in the movie by far. Not only was it cringey and poorly delivered (seriously what is up with his accent in that whole scene?), but it doesn't even work as a call back to BvS and was completely out of character even by the standards of Snyder's Superman.

        You're most probably still too young to work in the professional world. Here were Zack's options:
        WB brass decide they want to bring in Whedon to rewrite the script and schedule reshoots with Zack, if he wants to follow suit. If he doesn't, he's fired. Simple. Family tragedy happens. Zack, already being told his movie will be scrapped, Whedon waiting to take over... What else can he do? To hold his head up high, he simply leaves and allows WB to do whatever they want with his movie.
        Now imagine he went about the guidelines you listed, and refused all proposition from WB. HE'S FIRED! That's what happens in the real world, when you don't follow your bosses' direction, you get canned. Zack's bosses are Johns and Berg. Just like Disney fired Lord/Miller from the Han Solo movie.
        Zack was NOT the director of the movie in post-production, nor the reshoots. Therefore, once he left, the production became Whedon's.
        Zack wanted to leave gracefully. He didn't want to create chaos. WB wanted to take his production and turn it into something else. He said fine, do it, but I'm out... No drama.

        Did this feel like a zack snyder film to you? I would say it was pretty bad, but not in ways characteristic of zack snyder films. if anything, it felt like they took the broadestly approvable/least offensive elements from whatever snyder shot, and then padded that out with a bunch of studio-droning "character moments"(read: one-liners) from a not particularly interested joss whedon.

      If one chef bakes a cake and the other decorates it, it's still both their cake. The only thing is, one chef did a shittier job than the other so now the cake's just kinda 'meh'. You have to work with what you've got and that's what Whedon did with this movie.

    The differences were very evident, as in the shots by Snyder and Whedon. A stark difference in the tone when they introduce Batman to when he gets thrown around by Supes. I get that they had to make it lighter by having characters make jokes, but it was unnecessary to have batman crack jokes.

EMH, spectacular spiderman, YJ, Green lantern, iron man armored adventures, batman brave and the bold, xmen etc... When YJ and GL ended there was a void and I feed it by watching classic old reruns until I watched it all and was had to find something mature to replace them.

  You really think this is a Whedon movie? Snyder was primarily done with principle before his tragedy. WB saw an early progress report of the movie and was apparently 'unwatchable', so they hired Whedon. You take a light director mix a dark director, the results are gonna be somewhat grey. This universe just needs to die already. Everyone but WW is boring. Batman's predictable and clearly Ben hates his job now, Aquaman's a douche, Cyborg's bland, and the Flash is just throwing out quips. I don't necessarily hate Superman but I do hate Cavill's acting. He's only got 2 facial expressions: sad and mad, not matter the scene. Just stop with these 'mixed' movies already. Why would studios continue to fund projects with $300,000,000 budgets that only get mixed reviews?

I don't think he "needs" to be a massive Superman fanboy to make a Superman movie. I have NEVER made that argument. Nolan wasn't a huge Batman geek and look at what he accomplished. Just because Snyder was NOT into comics growing up, doesn't mean he couldn't possibly have done a good job. I never said that.
        The only point I'm making - which you have already admitted was true with this comment - is that Snyder did NOT "love" these characters. He's lying. It's blatantly inconsistent with his previous words.

        It has its many faults and its rushed as hell but i found it a ton of fun and thought it done a great job with the JL and Superman, i don't think its a classic or anything like that but from a purely popcon JL comic book brought to life feel i had a great deal of fun with it. Granted my thoughts might change once i see it again but i really enjoyed it, at the very least the action scenes were really good and Superman acts like Superman.

        BvS had abysmal plot construction and atrocious editing. Does this problem also plague JL? I've heard people saying it's not a problem, and I've heard people say it's the same as before.

        Editing isn't great (not SS levels though) and its clear a ton was cut and the reshoots are painfully clear, pacing is rushed but is mostly ok because the action and characters are great. Yeah the film is too short and needed another half hour at least.
        Still despite those problems i enjoyed it, its no classic and WW is a much better film but its mostly harmless in the way it does things, characters actually act the way they should, the "world ending" plot is generic as hell but it does whats required. In someways it reminds me of Justice League Origins from the N52 where its basic as it comes but it gets the League together, they all play off each well and it has tons of awesome actions. Shallow yes but a ton of fun and a load of moments what had me smiling and cheering (Basically Superman).

        I really want an extended version then. I'm tired of having to "need" these versions in order to enjoy these films, but it sounds like JL really needs it. I doubt it will happen though. Snyder pushed for the UC of BvS, and Snyder's not here anymore (for once, we actually needed him) and I don't think Whedon gives a crap. The UC version of BvS was also already announced before BvS hit theaters if I remember correctly. If an extended version of JL would be released on Bluray, I'm sure we would have known by now. Still, here's hoping it will happen.

        Yes, but he didn't kill anyone in the novel, while he did kill in BvS. That's why Snyder's words frustrate me. He justifies the fact that Batman kills in BvS by citing TDKR, but if you read the entire novel, it's clear he's never actually killed anyone. You could argue he "killed" Joker, but even that's not really true.

        Maybe Zack was just misremembering the scene from TDKR with the machinegun. It's a little ambiguous. And, to his credit, when he films the tribute scene to that page, he makes sure KGBeast kills himself in a fit of spite by lighting the flamethrower to the gas leak on purpose, not that Batman kills him directly (he could have if he wanted to).
        I misremember things all the time, and I don't always speak eloquently on the spot, so I don't really hold things like that against people in live interviews. It's not like it's a polished political speech or anything. haha

        I agree he killed himself, but it wouldn't have been possible without Batman semi-breaking his neck, so I have seen people argue Batman "killed" Joker in order to justify Snyder's claim of his Batman being accurate to the source material.
        I actually don't care whatsoever if Batman uses guns, so long as he doesn't kill anybody.
        Yes, the "I believe you" scene is ambiguous, but it is only later that it becomes clear Batman had never killed anyone before. And for what it's worth, that KGBeast "kill" is one that doesn't bother me that much, because it was either him or Martha. I get the decision. It's the same with Bale's Bat "killing" Dent to save Jim's kid. He didn't want to, but he had to (though I'd argue BvS was worse, since Bale had no other options and wasn't in control of the situation, whereas Batfleck was clearly in far more control). But it's really the Batmobile and Gatling gun murders that bother me. Those are indefensible. He didn't "need" to kill them. He just did.

        I'm mostly with you on all of this, even if I didn't mind it as much as you.
        The only difference in my view of the BvS scene is that I see it as Batman checkmating KGBeast, but KGB chooses to risk blowing himself up to try and kill Batman and Martha Kent. Batman's not actually killing him; just putting him in a position where he, if he values his life, shouldn't ignite that gas. So I definitely don't view it as Batman choosing to kill KGB. He's trying to disable him.
        I would say tackling Dent off the edge was a lot more direct than shooting KGB's gas tank, but it was kind of his only move realistically (unless, again, he had a convenient blow-dart gun or something, but come on lol).
        Regarding the Joker in TDKR, those people are simply wrong. The Joker didn't have to snap his own neck, and Batman didn't make him do it. :P
        It's another situation where Batman is checkmating an enemy and they don't care if they die if it means they get to spite him. KGB and Joker are both committing suicide after he takes their other options to victory away. Plain and simple.

Guns are used to kill people, not disable them or knock them out. Batman never uses guns with the intent to kill. He uses them to disable his enemies NON-lethally, defying the primary purpose of actual guns. He didn't kill anyone and that's the most important thing.

        I never accused Batman of using the guns with the intent to kill, though I question his concern for the lives of the police officers chasing him when he collapses the tunnel with one, and I question the survival of at least some mutants being sprayed with fireshower of rubber bullets via massive tank, even if they are rubber.
        He doesn't actually mention killing in that panel. He just describes the weapons as noisy, unnecessary, and of the enemy. My point is simply that he uses them anyway, for whatever end result.
        I don't mind that he uses them - I actually think the uses are pretty clever. It just always struck me funny that he said that, that's all. :P Cool line though.

        I wasn't being serious, but the point of saying that sarcastically was to lightly question to what extent we should suspend our disbelief, and where do you draw the line? Does the line change between different subjects of scrutiny?
        Here's a question along that line: Does Nolan's Batman ever specify that the Tumbler uses rubber bullets? Further, are rubber bullets necessary for us to believe Batman is still a good guy if he uses guns? (I don't think so.)
        Also, when TDKReturns Batman says, "Rubber bullets. Promise." with a hint of a smile, are we to believe that he's being smarmy and they might really not be rubber? :P lol
        For the record, I don't have a big dog in the "Batman does not kill" fight, so I'm not intending to be some sort of aggressor here so much as point out perceptions I find unfair or odd, and that happens to include that panel of TDKR Batman being a bit of a hypocrite.
        I am perfectly okay with Batman killing in some iterations (see my avatar of Keaton). I enjoy both takes and find them interesting in different ways. I don't think this factor makes or breaks the character as there's so much more to him that makes him who he is, so this isn't something that bothers me a whole lot, and if you have a preference, that's totally cool by me, and I do respect the "no kill rule" Batman. :)

        I don't think they should though. It was done intentionally to paint a stark image of this different version of Batman who was losing himself, and it's an important part of the intensity of the story.
        Maybe it's unfair of me to want them to stick to their vision just because I enjoyed that kind of story... The needs of the many to have a certain kind of Batman on film may outweigh that. It seems they definitely are trying to cater to the vocal majority now with JL so far, and understandably so.
        It's hard to measure the right call to make, but I guess if more people are happy, that's what matters. :) I'll be happy either way.

      He's always loved the characters, what I got from that interview was that he wanted to add more realism, like if superman pull someone "too" hard it will break that person in half, or Bruce Wayne wondering about the world is not a simple walk to a monastery and become a ninja, but also prison with all the bad experiences. I'd say probably Snyder was better suited to do a Justice League Dark, but MoS, BvS were liked by people and most likely JL will do fine too; I think all 3 movies will get low scores from critics, but general audience will be happier. WW was Snyder's story and that worked out well. There is no damage is a movie, we'll have more movies, if we survived Clooney's nipples, we'll be ok. I like Snyder's films and I wish they would have let him make his darker realistic versions, instead of the studio diluting his "vision". But I would give that a pure Snyder movie would have not been main stream like Watchmen. it's good to share your opinion, and you shouldn't think people want to change your mind, everybody here is just sharing their thoughts as well.

He's right about what he was stating at that point, Fox's movies sucked and Marvel was starting with Iron Man, which is a B-character, so his point was valid, after Fox x-men movies, things didn't look good. He wanted a more realistic version, if Superman sneezes next to you, it will kill you. Batman's stories aren't all successful and happy. Seriously, Bruce Wayne, a rich boy goes to the pits of the world and somehow all that happens to him is ending in a monastery? Not even a paper cut in his travels? (and most likely he was joking) I enjoyed Nolan's movies, but they weren't perfect.         Yeah the gore is pointless, the comic book isn't actually that violent and unlike the film the characters don't all feel like sociopaths (that alleyway fight is awful in the film), Snyder completely ruined Veidt as well and made him a complete villain as well as removing his final exchange with Manhattan what is vital to his character.
        The film looks pretty and he does a great job capturing the look of the comic but he fails completely in capturing the heart and soul of the comic.
        As for watching it again well yeah i did a month back actually after re-reading the comic yet again so i have both very fresh in my mind.

        Actually i adore the comic book what i've read countless times and consider one of my favorite stories in any medium of all time. Watchmen the film is just visuals, all the good stuff in it is from the comic and not Snyder's work, the fact he changed the ending (what shows he didn't understand the comic) and ruined Veidt shows that the film is hollow as hell. Saying that i do like the film but its nothing compared to the book and is above average as a comic book film.
        Also i bet if Snyder made WW your thoughts would be completely different on it. As for brainless comic book films well BvS is pretty brainless itself, some bible images don't make a film deep.

        Martha scene is pretty stupid though, i get the message just fine but its executed so poorly. For one it made zero fucking sense that Clark would say "MARTHA", he's never once called her that prior to that scene and Bruce would have no fucking idea on who Martha is, "he has my Mom" "save my Mom" "you have to save to her" would have made a 100% more sense because for starters that's what a son would normally say when talking about his Mom (especially when that and Ma is the only thing he's ever called her prior to that scene) and Bruce would know instantly what he means because Mom is pretty clear on who that person is.

I’m sad to see a lot was cut that Zack and his crew had filmed. I would love to have an extended cut from him, but I don’t think he would come back just to make a whole other edit. Hopefully, we’ll get some deleted scenes on the Blu-ray!

Either way, I enjoyed Justice League as it was, sure it had it's flaw but I think the positives outweighed the negatives.         The Suicide Squad "extended" cut was a stupid cash grab designed to sucker in those who bought the BvS ultimate edition. While the UE almost completely changed the structure of the film itself, the SS EC just tacked on 9 minutes of extra scenes with little adherence to pacing or structure.

    There might be SOMETHING in there that's salvageable for a director's cut. So many scenes at the very least had semi-finished fx that were left on the cutting room floor. Hell, even just DIFFERENT TAKES and camera angles of the same scene. Like Aquaman jumping on the batmobile - originally in the trailers, it was shot from the front angle and in the actual movie, it's from the side - or Cyborg jumping into the Knightcrawler and saying "thanks, Alfred. I'll take it from here" - trailers had him shot from the front with the camera moving in slowly on his face - in the actual movie, camera is static with Fisher moving his body around.
    Same with other scenes that likely had the FX work at least to the point where it'd be a quick polish here and there... Such as when Wonder Woman lands in Steppenwolf's lair and says "Shall we?" with Cyborg and Aquaman standing at her side.
    NOT in the actual movie. We only see her land and Cyborg and Aquaman were digitally erased.

      What do you mean by "single handedly ruined DC" ? He created the DCEU, not DC, if you're so keen on DC go watch the older movies or read comics, he created his on vision with his own take on the characters and you have only him to thank for the next 10 DCEU movies.
      And WB spent millions because they weren't happy with Zack's cut, in any way meaning it was bad, it's just not what they wanted. WB wants money, so they Frankensteined a 2 hour movie with what Snyder and Whedon shot, mixing Terrio's and Whedon's dialog, using a composer who doesn't share the same vision as the original director. They did this to get a light hearted fun comedy to sell more.

        He didn't created s hit.It was warner bros. who wanted to have a cinematic universe like Marvel and they spend millions and time to do it.His job was to give shape to wb vision but he failed to do so.
        Man of steel failed both financially and critically else they wouldn't have taken a three years break and we would have gotten many other DC movies,Their biggest mistake was hiring a hack.Imagine if MOS was a success, DCEU would be a done dead this year.

        Okay so explain to me how this "vision" of WB changed after Green Lantern became the worst movie ever ? It was supposed to start their cinematic universe, but it failed miserably, and Zack had a vision, (not like WB, who only cares about money), so Wb thought they had something going on and they let him start the DCEU.
        WB isn't in any way like Marvel where it's the studio who does a story and hire director literally "for hire", Man of Steel and BvS UE were Snyder's creations, as is the backstory of WW, Aquaman, Cyborg and Flash.

Goyer to write the script and produced the movie.Anybody could have replaced hack snyder.And, Imagine if they hired a good director and MOS turned out to be a good movie which was a financial and critical success we would have already gotten two MOS sequels and many other DC movies..MOS failure led to warner bros. taking three year break, Bringing in Batman and still failing with BvS cause of hack.
        And, Hack Snyder didn't invented the idea of a Batman V Superman movie.The idea was around for a very long time, Zack only steal it and still failed.

        And to your other reply, I never said Snyder invented those stories, but he did create the movies, that's what a director does. He created the DCEU because he connected everything, he cast the JL and as I already said created the backstory, based upon comics yes, but he's the one who decided to have an older Batman, an unloved Superman.

Justice League is not a train wreck. It's very enjoyable movie in my opinion. My only complaint is that is too short. The scenes that WB cut out would have enhanced the film. Zack Snyder did a good job.

I love how the Snyder fanboys bash JL even though that's the film what finally gets Superman right and has a JL what feel like the JL. I don't know how much imput Snyder had on how the characters who were depicted in the finished film including SM but JL is the first DCEU film (WW aside of course) to actually get the characters right and it finally gave us a Superman who acted and talked like Superman.
Like i said before i do believe that most (not all) of the hardcore Snyder fanboys on here aren't comic book readers and just fanboys of Snyder because its funny how they turn on the film what gets the characters right.

        Actually Superman was just brought back to life and giving a 2nd chance and be with Lois again, other then the world threat what he knew he and League could handle he actually had a lot to be happy with. He's finally come to terms with who is and that Batman was inspired enough by him that he formed the League and brought him back to life despite the risk what posed. He also saw all these new heroes fighting and being heroes and knew he inspired that.

        I could ask you the same question bruh? I mean i comment enough with clear knowledge on the comic book reviews on here, i don't recall seeing you do the same so one could wonder if all your knowledge is based on Snyder right?
        I'm currently reading 90% of Rebirth titles, fell in love with King's current Mister Miracle story, have a whole room filled with comics and trade-backs (90% or so DC related), own most of DC related films and shows and have always got a trade-back on the go. So yeah i read the comic books "bruh" and know my stuff.

        Yeah maybe you didn't read enough? Mark Waid's Superman, for example? Kingdom Come? Golden Age Superman, where he literally beats people and wrecks shit for no reason? Zack Snyder has every right to choose the serious side of Superman that the comics have portrayed, it's a shame you like the Super Friends version of Supes.

        Kingdom Come? Yeah i read that again not long back, he actually feels like Superman still in that though so? By the end he's back to being the hero he was and we had that lovely scene with the Trinity in the cafe. Golden Age SM again feels like SM and he isn't some moody asshole in that, sure he's not quite the classic SM we know but he is easily near that level. Waid is one of my favorite writers so yeah i've read his stuff and again his stuff is still Superman in spirit. Snyder's pre-JL SM isn't like those characters except maybe their worse traits.
        Serious side? Yeah i do and thats why All Star Superman is my favorite Superman story and why its considered by many to be the greatest Superman story of them all. Everything great about him is in that story from his caring, serious and humorous side. Also Rebirth Superman is pretty serious as well and he is near perfect in it, actually JL SM actually had a few traits from him.

He went though enough grief for us and what would have been the point in him sitting down and seeing the film at a time when he is clearly NOT ready to even talk about it. Just remember why he walked away for a bit. His wife is there promoting the film, that should be enough and this is not just a movie to him. It was his waking life since 2011. You did us proud Zack and i greatly appropriate this maybe final directorial gift to us.

  I wouldn't say "very" good. It's was a good/ok movie. A simple one. Not my type of movie but it's ok I guess, and should be watched at least once.
  So far the only DCCU movie I've only seen once is Wonder Woman. Which was an OK movie but impossible to watch twice. If on the first you could predict everything as if you've watched it already, it's messed up. Justice League, I might see it a second time, but purely for some action moments and to hang with buddies.

    Apparently Wonder Woman remains the only other DCEU movie besides MOS that wasn't interfered with by studio mandates.
    IMO, that makes it a "pure" movie as its the director's vision unhinged like MOS was for Snyder. Once everyone is put on a leash, that's when things start getting messy ala JL, SS or even BvS.
    IMO also, even though I enjoyed JL immensely in spite of its flaws (which there were aplenty), Wonder Woman is still a much superior movie as its far more balanced and I wasn't constantly distracted by stupid things like CGI mustaches.

        Yeah, it was the silliest thing ever. I don't get why they couldn't have done a better job with it too considering the movie has other CGI that looks decent.
        It literally looks like someone photoshopped the scenes frame by frame with the clone stamp tool and called it a day.

The biggest fuck ups in this are the WB execs. Can't blame Snyder or Whedon (though I don't like Whedon's movies at all), since neither of them could make the film they truly wanted.
