Last week select members of the press got to see Justice League for the very first time. While they aren’t able to publish their full reviews just yet, they did get the green light from Warner Bros. today to share their initial thoughts about the movie on social media.

Take a look below at the first reactions to Justice League. The overall consensus seems to be they got some things right and some things wrong. It's not a perfect movie, but it's not terrible either!

    I don’t see how this is a mixed reaction , when everybody is saying the movie is good but has flaws like every other movie ever made , especially MCU movies lol but ok I guess the marvel fan boys will run with that too lol. Me personally I want Epic DCEU over FUN movies any day but if this movie will be liked universally by everybody then fine that’s what the DCEU needs if they give the fans like me the extended blu ray then that will make me very happy , but I don’t want that to be a habit. I pay to see the full movie that we deserve in theaters, I don’t wanna feel like I’m being short changed. And the same critics that praise Marvel movies for being fun and over look the plot will bash DC movies for the same thing yet people say DC bias isn’t a thing lol sure.

        The concept of "fun" derives of the fact that the person is having a good time. For example, How can you have fun by having your intestines rise up to your throat in a roller coaster? Yet, a lot of people do. Fun does not mean "funny"... I personally am a fan of the horror genre, and I have a lot of fun watching the 80's classics (that is, people being murdered most of the time, not a "funny" situation). Marvel has undoubtedly mistaken fun for being funny

            actually, if you watch Iron Man 1 and Iron Man 3 you can tell the difference between having some "fun" moments", and being a downright comedy without caring the situation or the character, is just stupid joke after stupid joke

            please, don't make me remember that flatulent old dude who was supposed to be the mandarin! That was the very first huge disappointment I had with the MCU. Until that moment, I had liked most of their films (except thor 1 and cap 1, that were very boring)

            “Downright comedy” is what I always see on THIS forum. They’re action/adventure movies, which have comedic moments. People complain about quips in dangerous moments...but John McClane has been doing that for decades. None of the movies have any character doing a 5 minute routine with “joke after joke.”

            Hell, I caught a little of MiB3 tonight and it’s no different.

        Go figure how Thor can have fun and make so many jokes when his father and all his friends are gone, and his home world is destroyed. Thank Marvel for turning a movie about the Norse apocalypse into a full-blown Mel Brooks comedy !

    I'm sure it'll be as fun as they say but let's take a moment to remember when Nolan released his Batman films to criticial acclaim. Let's remember not being able to see The Dark Knight because every showing was sold out. Let's remember the oscar wins.

          they are just squeezing as many costumes as possible in every movie. On BvS we should have had a slower movie with a final battle between the two, no WW, no Doomsday.

          On SS... it just should have never been filmed

          Man of Steel was great

          and now JL looks simply really really bad, with a comedy tone

        Suicide Squad won an Oscar. Actually, it is the only superhero movie in the post-MCU era to have done so if I am not mistaken. Besides, it was a huge commercial success.

    I always wondered what's wrong with a superhero movie being a bit dark? Don't we already have the marvel universe to look for light superhero movies? To be honest I admired Man of Steel's theme and I I really wonder how elfman's ost matches Zack's visuals.

        I agree but didn't all of them do quite well in the box office even though they had bad ratings. So, audiences did like it but it again comes down to the competition. I guess they saw Marvel is making billions with every movie they release and they wanted to do the same. Anyways still excited to see it next week and I even bought the tickets last week

      nothing, is just that all people and critics want superhero movies to be comedies because they think is something dumb and not art, which is what they also think the mcu executives and wb executives from now on, i am sure Elfman score is out of place with Snyder visuals since they brought him so soon

        Sigh! I wish majority liked the Man of Steel kind of superhero movies because its actually cool to see two different worlds and two different takes on superheroe movies one is light the other is a bit dark.

            it was probably because of the unexpected success of GotG (a superhero team that almost nobody knew) that changed the deal. It was like: "hey! if we can make a ton of money with these characters that nobody knows, just imagine how much we can make by doing the same with the heavy hitters!"

            Thor and The Dark World, while not as overt in their comedic moments as Ragnarok, were still more "fun" than they were dark or serious.

            The first Thor had pretty much the entire second act contain fish-out-of-water jokes
            while the second Thor had naked Selvig running around and Kat Dennings' "intern" friend.

            In any case though, Ragnarok was an overall better movie than the both of them, although I still like the first Thor a hell of a lot.

    As long as it's better than BvS and enjoyably & fun I'm happy. (Wonder Woman quality will have to wait for for next phase) I know Suicide Squad was panned, but I thought it was a fun movie. I can live with a fun movie (considering the history JL has had) without any cringe worthy elements. I'm looking at you BvS & murdery Batman :)

    Seems positive! I am confused how (what seems to be) such a simple narrative can have so many flaws as some of them stated. But they also said they loved the interactions between the members of the team and that is enough for me.

      I don't think people are applying the word, "narrative" properly. More than likely they mean plotting. With the insistence on keeping the film at or around 120 mins there were most likely some shortcuts that had to be taken. More than likely it's, "Fridge Logic" at play; the idea that an issue isn't really an issue if the viewer only realizes it sometime later. So are these, "narrative" or plotting issues a problem while watching the movie or only when thinking about them later on?

        I agree with most of what you said, but I think you're reaching when you say they're not applying the word "narrative" properly. Narrative is how you tell a story, and I can totally see how insufficient runtime can affect that.

          Well let me give you my perspective so see why I said that.

          I had been using the words story, plot and narrative interchangeably for most of my life. When I started writing about movies I found that vocabulary too limiting, so I started some limited research to find if there was a difference. My various readings led me to my current use of the terms as such:

          A story is an accounting of something that happens.
          A plot is the details of that accounting.
          Narrative is what that story means, or what it is about.
          For instance, when a politician says they need to, "control the narrative" of an event they don't just mean they have to control the story of what happens but that they have to control what that story, "means" so they can get the reaction they want.

          For a film it would be like this, in my perspective;

          The story of The Crow is a murdered man comes back from the dead to get revenge on the people that killed his lady love. The plot is all the thing that happen to make that story. The narrative, however, is about catharsis, letting go and moving on.

          So when someone says the narrative is, "muddled" and then proceeds to talk about how they didn't understand the details of the story, I process that to mean that the details of the plot are shifty in some way. If they mean to say that what the story is, "about" or what it, "means" is somehow muddled then that is a conversation that would take far more than what most of us put into a simple review or overview.

          I'm not saying that my perspective is, "right" because I am not a true scholar on the subject. However I do think my perspective fits in about 75% of cases, and it's served my personal ability to evaluate things well enough.

      I think that the main complaint is that the plot is thin and it is rushed, The former is actually true of most superhero movies. the latter is probably a result of the 2-hour cut, but it will probably sit well with the general audience (the average movie-goer, especially in North America, doesn't have enough attention span for longer movies and enjoys fast-apced action).

    I'm taking a stab here, but I'm guessing what people are liking about this movie is what Whedon and reshoots did, and what is not working is all related to what Zack Snyder did that could not be changed.

      I think that is what the critics are implicitly saying., but, as someone said below, they are just looking fpr a narrative to support their preconception of what a superhero movie should be like, which fits Whedon's model more so than Snyder's. IN any case, WB was wise to bring Whedon in. If this movie was 100 % Snyder, we would most definitely be looking at a rotten score now given the critics' bias. Because the movie is partly Whedon's though, they are willing to give it a pass grade, even if it is in their mind "flawed fun".

      Again, we should not be framed though by any reviewers' opinions, but rather watch the movie ourselves and make our opinon about it.

    A little disappointed to hear the story isn't great, but aside from that this is about what I expected. Great characters and a fun time with a "meh" villain and not very good CGI at times (I still hate how Cyborg looks). Sounds like Man of Steel might still be my favorite of the new DC films, but I'm still excited!

      the first avengers movie was exactly that: good characters (used to like many of them before they were turned into clowns), not very good CGI, and a very, very "meh" villain (is that guy like the ONLY villain they have?). Still, it was well received and managed to make more than a billion
      I fail to see how this film is different... but, some critics will see to it that it gets enough trash thrown upon it
      Only difference here is that superman is a better character than Cap, WW is better than black widow, aquaman is better than thor, and batman is better than both teams combined hehe

      You shuldn''t jump into any of those conclusions based on a handiful of reviews. There is actually one reviewer who said Cyborg was one of the weak links, while others said that all characters shined, including Cyborg. The opinion about poor CGI is not universal either. What happens is that some people on the internet have certain preconceptions (like " Cyborg will be bad") and then they go cherrypicking reviews that corroborate their preconceptions.

    Chris, I'm glad you changed the headline. You should reconsider your MO. I understand the click-bait headlines bring you more clicks and popularity, but you should really tone it down a little bit. It's as if with every article you try to stir controversy or at least put a controversial twist on the topic. You aren't telling us that it's a great thing we have another Ben Affleck interview, no you write "Batfleck Probably No More" . And that was just one of many things he said, you just pick up something to diversify people. You know we all love these characters, some of us understand and thus love the movies so we were all hoping there would be no problems with JL.seems like to you though, only clicks are important, you don't care that with your false or presumptuous titles your creating rumors.

    This current trend of asking superhero movies to be "light, fun, and humorous" and thinking "dark, mature and serious" is bad is really annoying and stupid, as if the mcu did it right and all superhero movies should be compared to that.
    Having said that, i am sure all the problems of the movie come from whedon and wb, and not Snyder, specially since they cut off scenes from the movie and changed it as a whole, anyway it seems like MoS and BvS will be at the top of the best dccu movies for a long time.

      my thoughts exactly! I mean, as if movie genres were not a well defined thing! Action, comedy, drama, horror, etc... Critics nowadays seem to have mistaken superhero movies for comedies, and if a comic based film does not fit into that specific category, it is wrong. This was not the case years ago, when movies were graded because of what they were, good or bad, not because they lacked or had a determined amount of jokes. How would films like the nolan trilogy, with almost cero jokes, be judged today?

        Actually there's a lot of humour in the Nolan trilogy. Major action scenes are regularly broken up with humorous reaction shots from pedestrians to defuse the tension. There are many jokes, but some might not be so obvious. Certainly not the same humour as Marvel.

          Yes, almost every action packed movie tends to have some degree of humor, as ypu say, to cut off some tension. But I ask you this: do you remember Nolan's trilogy for its humor? Do you think that was the main "appeal" of those films?

        Films are judged by how themes are executed, how fluid the narrative is, how well developed characters are and if the movie aims to achieve what they intended to achieve.

        If a cbm aims to be a comedy then it'll judged like one (Ragnarok) if a film aims to be dark and gritty then it'll be judged like one (Logan, The Nolan Trilogy).

        Critics don't think about,"they've mistaken superhero movies for comedies" they just judge the product on what it sets out to do, that's all it is, that's what they're good at.

        This misconception of that critics judge films based on an amount of jokes and not whether or not it is good or bad is complete B.S.

        Critics judge via narrative fluidity, execution of themes, story arcs, the overall goal of the products intention, they don't care about anything else. That's how they judge, they judge on the filmmaking process, nothing more nothing less.

        no, superhero are the modern myths we have, Stan Lee said he wrotes Shakesperan tragedies, is art, if i want to see a comedy i watch a damn comedy, if i go watch a movie called Thor: Ragnarok, by example, the least thing i want to see is some dumb disney comedy, the thing is, these movies are not made for fans anymore

      Winter Soldier was the best Marvel movie and my favorite and it was darker compared to the rest of the movies , I hate that argument as well the dark tones make DC stand out to me and it’s better imo

      I agree with this. Other than it being all Whedon or WB's fault (not ruling it out either). I just cant even imagine what Zack must have going through. No way could anyone focus 100% of themselves on carrying that inside.
      But yes to everything else. Being simple "light and fun" almost killed these characters and their medium before.

    I get the impulse to capitalize on the ongoing superhero fad but Warner has screwed this (the DCEU) up so incredibly badly. Burn it all to the ground. Superheroes are evergreen properties. In the cultural consciousness, Batman died in 1968; came back in '89; died in '97; came back in '04. In 2017, Batman is dead again. Culturally irrelevant. Wait a few years, come back, and try again. The next batch of 3-to-6-year-old Bat fans is being born now. Give them a decent reason to experience Batmania.

    Confirmed spoilers ahead but will make everyone here very happy and maybe even surprised... You've been warned.

    So Deathstroke and Lex are in the movie but are post credits scene. Deathsroke is breaking Lex out of prison. That clip Ben posted of Deathstroke last year is from just that. Zack posted storyboards of it last year and hinted at it.

    Don't even think this was cut from the movie cause doesn't feel like it would fit anywhere. Works better as a post credits scene.

    And Dinah Laurel Lance is in the movie. She's one of the civilians that's saved by Cyborg. Confirming Black Canary in DCEU for JL2 and automatically confirming Green Arrow in DCEU for JL2 and now the inevitable stand alone GA movie

        Pretty sure it's their way of saying "Hey these characters are part of this universe too." cause I don't see how flat out confirming Laurel in DCEU doesn't pretty much intend that JL2 will have GA and BC leading up to a GA movie. Didn't see it coming, I'll give Snyder that. I mean, the last thing I expected to see was any GA references but I guess Arrow is doing really well and they finally want to bank on GA in the movies now.

        This explains a lot about the test screenings because they all assumed Lex was cut and started spreading all that. That's because it wasn't even in the movie from the get go. It was meant as a surprise.

            Deathstroke/Lex is the real deal. Not sure about the Darkseid thing but that's what I heard. Almost all the critics are saying the second post credit scene is mindblowing and sets up the DCEU further in a big way. And a few teased Darkseid. So who knows.

          Alona Tal isn't a bad choice for Dinah, i could see her playing the part pretty well, the fact they have an actual actress rather just a extra doing a cameo must mean we will see more of her and maybe a Green Arrow film (i hope). Honestly a Green Arrow film would be a safe bet, if they stuck with how he is in the comics then they have a roguish Tony Stark type hero what people like but with his Left-Wing views thrown in what could be interesting in a Super Hero film.

    Even with all those problems during post-production, I bet it can't still be worse than many comic-book movies released this year (except WW and Logan). Speaking of that, it's such a shame MCU decided used 2017 as the year for the debut for its "three-films per-year" strategy with dissapointing results (at least to me).

    Ok two things for the sequel, first one is a relatively easy thing to accomplish the second one a little tougher:

    1. No CG-villain. Yes I am aware that the way the villain is brought to life does not indicate lack or no lack of motivation or achievements but it does clear up a whole lot of render work which is time which is money, which can better be spend on practical effects/make-up sets/location than CGI. And we all know there's going to be plenty CG to showcase the heroes' powers to begin with, so there's that.

    2. Yes, this is the tough one. No reshoots. How to accomplish this? Not only schedule out photography into the ridiculous details but to have the script locked and ready for pre-production. Sure some things can change during pre-production, some tiny things *can* be reworked during shooting but it shouldn't be too much. So when it comes to this point, best case scenario (not sorry for the pun lol I chuckled myself) is a polished script before a single scene is shot.

    Sure a *whole* lot more things come into play to deliver a great film but these two points do seem to be the major sections which is struggled with in the past. Sure, reshoots can definitely be good, check Wonder Woman's scene with the horses for instance.

    And yes, I know Snyder had some very important reasons to let someone else finish his film and I respect that. With casts like these films it's very difficult to schedule everyone which makes the cost go up even more of which there is actually no need if it doesn't have to come to reshoots in the first place. Again, to make myself clear, this is a different situation but I think we all hope something horrible like what happened to Snyder's family doesn't happen again.

    I said to myself, don’t check spoilers, i failed. So where im from there not even playing it thurday night, i when to talk to the manager and said, man how much to rent a room for a private showing, he said, can u find people to come, me, no problem, him, ok come by around 11 pm and we will work something out. Yeah baby the wait is almost over. Even if its flawed, every body is positif about the team so im gonna be happy :)

    Most reviews said that the general audience, includng both those who hated and those who loved BvS and SS, will like JL becaise it is loads of fun and has great acting. If you don't want to see it on the big screen, it is your loss.

    They are not saying the jokes saved the movie. They are saying great acting and incredible chemistry between the actors did it. And they are especially praising Gal, Ezra and Jason.

    The "flawed fun" headline is not what the reviewers said and it is itself logically flawed, "Flawed fun! means "fun that doesn't work" , whereas what the reviewers actually said was that the movie had a few (mostly unrelated) flaws that do not prevent it from being fun though (om the contrary, the movie is successfully fun according to them).
