New photos of Ben Affleck as Batman and the 'Justice League' cast ahead of their China tour

The cast of Justice League are kicking of the promotional tour for the movie later this week. Their first stop is China, and director Zack Snyder has wished them well on Vero and shared a bunch of new photos.

"Love this team of truly lovely people. Wish them all the best in China," Snyder said. Check out the new behind-the-scenes photos he shared of Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, Ben Affleck as Batman, Jason Momoa as Aquaman, Erza Miller as The Flash, and Ray Fisher as Cyborg.

      I was also baffled by the amount of love he's getting on this website. Then again, Snyder seems to be a God here, so that tells all you need to know. Ben was "okay" as Batman imo. His Bruce Wayne was awful. Cavil is wooden af. He's a terrible Superman, and a terrible actor overall.

        I don't disagree that ZS ruined him for me. And Cavil may very well be a great guy, but he lacks range. I understand Snyder likes his heroes relentlessly brooding, but Cavil should've done more with it. His face literally doesn't change from MoS to the end in BvS.
        On the other end of the spectrum, Gadot, who isn't a particularly talented actress to put it mildly, managed to evoke and excite, despite her uneven acting. She comes off way more likeable, on or off screen. She emotes better than Cavil ever will, so I can forgive her mediocre acting.

        Where was his acting falling short? Once again I ask, what else do you emote when you’re being persecuted by the world? Even with that, Cavill did a fine job showing subtlety in those sad emotions, particularly in the senate explosion scene.

        People are so used to happy endings that they find it difficult to digest a story that ends otherwise. And Marvel shouldn't be used as the marking scheme. You don't choose how a story should be told to you, take it as ZS gave it...

The love and peace he has with Lois in their apartment, the hope in the midst of horror he has when he is about to sacrifice himself to save the world, the very normal-person-feeling air of professionalism and indignation he has in the office when trying to make a story about Batman...

        It wasn’t as organically developed and emotionally gripping in MoS as Diana and Steve’s romance was in WW, no, but that’s not a criticism of BvS. And it’s not even a huge criticism of MoS, either, as the start of their romance does actually make sense when you stop and think about all of what the two characters had been through together and shared with each other.

        Tethering his hope in the world to his faith and love in Lois is beautiful. And her encouragement and trust in him felt real. Pretty sure even most critics appreciated the relationship in at least the UE, so I’m not sure why you’re assaulting it so devotedly :P

        But BvS’ tone was surely appropriate. This is the Superman from MoS in a story composed of The Dark Knight Returns and The Death of Superman which explores humanity’s realistic reaction to his existence, serves as the model dark second part of a trilogy, and is the death part of the birth-death-resurrection arc. A light movie with dark parts would be highly inappropriate and possibly offensive, lol

        Not really. MoS concluded on a (somewhat) positive note. It wouldn't be a stretch to make a much more positive film, building on that optimism. BvS was unnecessary.

        It didn’t fundamentally change the characters. It put them in different situations to test them and deconstruct them and then build them back up again. Superman is just as Superman in these movies as he is in other depictions. Batman is just as Batman as TDKReturns Batman was, but in a different world and under different circumstances. They were just trying to tell a new story for these characters.

        This is just Nolan’s Batman’s killing, but taken up a level on the recklessness and brutality factor.

        It’s implied. Remember, Zack does a whole lot of exposition not through actual exposition, but through visuals. We are told he’s been doing this for years and has seen so much betrayal and such, we see the destroyed Robinsuit, we see the burnt down Wayne Manor (that one is less definitely a contributing factor than Robin is, but I’d say it’s a safe wager), and then the Battle of Metropolis happens, and that’s when he’s finally broken.

        Why are you acting like it’s some stretch? That’s clearly what’s implied. And it was confirmed by Charles Roven that’s where they were going with it. He mentions all of the contributing factors I did except for Wayne Manor, which again isn’t as solid, and for the events of MoS, which go without saying: “I think that it just came about that this particular Batman, he’s been jaded by the process. There’s a really amazing line in the movie, ‘20 years in Gotham, how many good guys are left? How many stayed that way?’ And let’s face it, he’s a very damaged guy... We see Robin is not around. The character has evolved, and he’s definitely a more brutal guy, and we wanted him to be right on that edge, right on that razor. And he has to be on the razor’s edge, or why would he get Superman’s attention?”

        This is very much debatable. A director provides the story and tells the actor the tone he wants, but the actor chooses how to convey said tone in the confinements of what is required from him. Cavil does one face, and one face alone, and that's not a pretty face either. Zero range.

        I agree with most of what you said. Cavil really didn't have any room to breathe there, but neither did Affleck, and he managed much better. And that's because Ben emotes better. Not anywhere near as good as Gal, but leaps and bounds better than Henry.

        Bit on the negative side, but overall totally agree with you. I don’t think Henry and Gal should have “breathed” in BvS that much - they were supposed to be in difficult/sad/stressful situations for most of the movie and thus should not have acted in any way different than one would act in such a situation.

        Most people wanted it to be a versus, you can’t blame them. It was like a requirement. If Batman and Superman finally crossover in live action, they have to fight.
        But the characterizations weren’t changed for the worse; they allowed character development and a unique exploration of what makes these characters who they are and why that’s important in new ways than ever before explored in film.
        The Battle of Metropolis was a perfect setup to naturally lead to their fight, and I really enjoyed the religious themes of the movie. It HAD to explore humanity’s realistic reaction to Superman, so while doing that, why not, in tying into the Christ allegory, explore the dynamics of the repentant and unrepentant sinners through Bruce and Lex, respectively? And this also allowed them to touch upon all of the different facets of humanity’s fearful response through those characters’ slightly varying motivations and such.

        Man, stop talking about "everyone's expectations" cause that's just baseless. Talk about your own. I, for one, didn't want the first ever Batman/Superman movie be about a fight between them.
        Also, I went into the movie giving it a chance and by the time the fight was gonna start, I did not want them to fight, it was a fight that shouldn't have happened and could've been avoided. The story leads to it in a way that as an audience member I wanted it to not happen instead of thinking there's an actual beef to be solved only by violence

        I don’t think they wanted you to want them to fight (other than in the “Oh this is so cool to finally see” way). The first time I watched, I remember worrying so much about Martha the whole time, and then when Batman was about to defeat him, getting all concerned, but then the Martha scene came, and it made it that much more of a relief and satisfying and beautiful conclusion.

        If you argue that, then you must also argue that the Nolanverse didn’t fit Batman. Personally, I believe moviemakers should be allowed to pull characters from a fantastical comicbook reality and put them in the real world, and that’s just what Nolan did with Batman in TDK Trilogy and with Superman in MoS.

        Deconstruction is a bold choice, but not a wrong one. I find it very rewarding seeing the story play out that way. He never officially crosses the line. Superman was going to be that, but he is stopped. And it’s beautiful.
        Superman is a symbol of hope. He is a good man. A hero. He always does the right thing. They kept that going in BvS, but put it in a darker, more realistic world. A world that hates him and fears him. But a world that - because he is so great - is willing to sacrifice his life for anyway. And in doing so, he makes them all realize how good and how much a symbol of hope he really was. The world realizes it needs him. We need him. Superman had faith in our world, had values, stood for nobility and integrity and altruism, but our cynical real world questions and doubts all of those things, but in dying for us anyway, he proves us all wrong. The movie shows Superman was always right. It makes Superman really earn that title of being a symbol of hope. It is absolutely beautiful and true to who Superman is. This is Superman at some of his best. A perfect use of the Christ allegory and a touching homage to who the character is.

        Superman was upset because he was basically torturing the guys first off, but also because Lex set him up so that his victims were also getting killed, making Batman look like “judge, jury, and executioner.” The Martha scene was phenomenal, and as a lifelong Batman fan, so fulfilling. What better way to bring Batman back to his roots and humanize this “alien threat” than that most psychologically and emotionally loaded word? So great. Made me tear up. It’s one of the most emotionally climactic moments of the film, not silly, unless you make it that way, like those people who made that stupid meme about him supposedly becoming best friends with him because their moms have the same name because they didn’t get it.
        Sorry, but you’re making these claims of fact, but they simply aren’t inherently true. Superman IS hope and goodness in the face of adversity. Don’t know what you’re denying. These aspects were simply shown in a different light. Not Zack’s fault some people didn’t get it. Superman is no different in these movies than ever. This is just the real world. People need to learn to deal with that.
        And despite what the media likes to stir up, most people actually liked MoS (which was mostly David S. Goyer and Christopher Nolan’s idea, anyway), by the way.

        I recant my previous statement. Gal CAN act, and at times she does so wonderfully (pun intended). But her inexperience shows. In Wonder Woman, some of her line delivery was wooden, like the scene where she and her mother said goodbye. It wasn't a good delivery. Strangely, though, she got stronger as the movie progressed. She still has a ways to go, but there's definitely something to work with. Despite her faults, she pulled it off as WW. She's likable and appealing. She's gorgeous. Hands down DCEU's best casting.

        But he does actually drink in BvS, which is probably what you were referring to, but that’s another thing lifted directly from TDKReturns. In that comic, Bruce had started drinking, too - they even used Alfred’s line about the Waynes having an empty wine cellar. And in both stories this is used to show the state of Batman’s character at this point. Whether he did it while being Batman actively or not is irrelevant. But even if that weren’t in the comics, and Bruce truly never drank, would that really be as big of a deal as - say - TDK Trilogy’s almost completely giving ALL of the creation of Batman’s technology and gadgets and vehicles to Lucius Fox?

        Have you never heard “clown” be used figuratively? He’s simply saying he thinks he’s dressed ridiculously. Which can be argued, from Earthling standards. He’s not suggesting he looks like a literal clown - though that image has been cleverly used to evoke visions of the Joker in the audience’s heads.
        All I can say is I hope you guys nitpick EVERY movie this minutely, haha :P
        I find him very easy to “civilly spar” with, haha, he’s respectful and is very often fair and rational, unlike some of the others who disliked BvS around here, unfortunately :P

        I thought the film was trying to lay an easter egg here.... "freaks dressed as clowns" was a nod to the Joker?
        Doesn't Wayne know that Kent is Superman at this point? Fan service more than anything else, letting us know that this Batman has had plenty of run-ins with The Joker.
        Wayne likely see's the bright Superman costume as a bit "Clown-like", red and blue, and the fact that he has super powers and caused so much destruction equates to the freak part? He is likely trying to get a response out of Kent too, to see how he takes to being called a freak. At this point, he doesn't know what the Superman is like as a person. If you think about the word Freak, it has negative connotations, yes, but that's more the slang version.
        If I call you a freak it provokes an annoyed response, but if you look the word freak up:
        --a very unusual and unexpected event or situation [flying people who don't seem to die very easily with lasers-for-eyes]
        --a person, animal, or plant with an unusual physical abnormality [excessive strength.....lasers-for-eyes]
        --behave or cause to behave in a wild and irrational way [destroy entire city during a fight with one other being]
        Really, Bruce Wayne calling Superman a Freak, is a clever way to:
        A.) describe how someone who witnessed Metropolis might view the actions of Superman & The Kryptonians
        and B.) Annoy someone.

        Emotions look real because they are real. They come in naturally by doing ACTIONS. Hence the name "acting". An actor's job is to naturally perform actions and engage with a partner with whom emotions are brought out by speaking your dialogue and listening while channeling your character's thought process based on given circumstances while trying to achieve a goal.         Both actors were true to their characters in that scene. That scene was well-acted on both of their parts. Clark was coming from a place of duty and indignation and investigation, Bruce from hate and fear and mockery. They reacted perfectly.

        My problem with Cavil is that he always feels like a kid or a teenager. He lacks status and confidence. He takes the "boy scout" part of Superman very far and comes off as a bit naive. His inner monologue comes off as "OMG, these people don't like me. What do I do?" when it should feel like "I'll prove these people I'm on their side". And that's on him, not the writing. Writing is bad actually too. Like why the fuck would Clark not know who the fuck Bruce Wayne is? I mean it's not like he just landed on earth, he's been living in the US for at least 25 years I'd say

        I wondered that so long, too. In the end that’s a minor nitpick, though, not major issue. My best guess is that he is still sort of new as a reporter. He surely wouldn’t have known or at least cared enough to remember about Bruce Wayne as a farmboy and fisherman and wanderer most of his life. Only when he became a reporter would I expect him to know who Bruce Wayne is. But it had only been what, a year? And Bruce has probably been more of a recluse at this stage in his life, so there might not have been much of a reason for Clark to have heard his name or anything, especially when he seems to mostly be doing sports.

        Cavill isn’t a bad actor. Love what you said about casting a good man in the role. You can really tell Cavill loves this job and the opportunity to play the character, and he really does seem like a genuinely nice guy. Good observation.
        I wouldn’t say his performance was rote. He has played every emotion as it accurately would be in the context of the story being told. In fact, I actually really appreciate the subtlety in his acting; I think of the senate explosion scene and his pained look as death surrounds him...

        Mehh... I agree with you overall, but is Cavill a "good" person? From what we can see, sure. But does he "have" to be? I'm not so sure about that, and frankly, I've seen him acting a bit "dick"-ish in certain interviews. If you look at the MCU, Cap is by far my favorite Avenger (despite the fact that I never cared about the comics). I just like what Feige and Evans have done with the character. He's basically Marvel's answer to DC's Superman. He's the epitome of goodness, honor, integrity, etc (all traits you would ascribe to Superman). But if you look at Evans? Is he a "good" person irl? I really wouldn't say so. Not that he's a "bad" person necessarily, but the guy is so fucking full of himself, always trying to be the center of attention. I really hate that type of behavior. I've seen him in interviews acting supremely unprofessional and utterly disrespectful towards the interviewers. Not in an "insulting" way, but just how he acts. Showing no respect or care for other people. Again, that doesn't make him a "horrible" person. But he's not humble. He's not exactly the most respectful guy. He's somewhat arrogant, etc. This isn't the personality that fits for Captain America... and YET, he still plays the role very well. So sure, it helps to insert "their own" (good) personalities in the role (that's the only reason as to why Gal gave an acceptable performance in WW). But it's not necessary by any means.

        Exactly, Evans has tremendous respect for the character of Cap. That's why he succeeds. Because he believes in it. But there isn't 1% of Cap's personality that comes from Evans himself. He's like the complete opposite. But respect for the role, isn't the same as "being" the role. I agree it helps, but I think you refuted your own point by admitting that Evans succeeds, not because he's like Cap, but because he respects the source material.
        I'm also waiting for a capable director to guide Cavill, because I agree he deserves so much more. He's clearly the best actor to have played the role (neither Reeves, nor whatever his name was from Superman Returns, are particularly good actors, let's be honest) and he also looks like the character the most, it's almost scary. Strong jawline, masculine face, black hair (I know he dyed his hair, but still), blue eyes, ripped as fuck body, etc. And he respects the character and he's not unlike Superman himself. I pray he has more to work with in JL.

        To be clear, I'm not trying to blackmail Chris Evans or anything. I really couldn't care less about celebrities. I think he's a good actor and a fantastic Captain America and that's what matters to me. It's just that, from what I've seen, he always has to be the center of attention. The way he laughs alone, irritates me. It's like he wants everyone on Earth to know he's in the room. It's not "him" specifically, I recognize that type of behavior in other people, and I personally have issue with it. But again, that doesn't make him a "bad" person. Just someone I'd rather try to avoid irl and wouldn't want to associate with. He's just not my type of guy. Doesn't mean I wish bad upon him or anything.

    This is based on BvS, obviously:
    Visually speaking, he looks more athletic than the previous Bat men. The best suit(s), aesthetically speaking of course, with a cowl that doesn't make him look like he's wearing a neck-brace.
    Attitude-wise, I like Batman because he's more brutal and scary than your typical superhero. Ben's Batman has taken that to heart more than any other before him.
    This is just a summary of why I think he's the best on-screen Bats.

      Batarangs are still useful despite being non-lethal. Just because Batman kills, doesn't mean that he should only use lethal weapons.
      And with the Batsuit, it's just like the comics. We see in the comics that his costume shows off a lot of muscle definition, despite the fact that it shouldn't.

        The repeated mistake people are making is that Batman is intending to kill everyone just because he killed a couple of people.
        Batman isn't going out of his way to kill everyone. The only people who died were in heavily armed cars spraying fireshower at him, or were stupid enough to jump on their own grenades after being disarmed, or igniting their own leaking gas tank.
        Mostly, he went out of his way to fight thugs NON-lethally. It's incredibly obvious if you watch his methodology in hand-to-hand situations that he's not playing Punisher.
        Shooting down cars with crazy armaments as a huge amount of bullets and rockets come at you isn't really that bad. It's only realistic that he wouldn't have a magic answer that would spare every thug's life every time. In the cases that it was practical, he mostly did try to operate non-lethally, even if he was still understandably brutal.
        I've had this conversation with the same people before and it went nowhere.

He even got to have touches of deeply empathy in a few scenes. Those were all the things he could have been in this story, and he did them all quite well.
      4. You misinterpreted the characterization. The Batman in BvS is not an active, deliberate killer. That’s not his new MO. He is the same as he was, just now because of the state of the character at this point in his life, he is more reckless. If someone needs one punch to be knocked out, he’s going to punch harder, and 3 or 4 times instead. If a bad guy is going to die nearby him, he’s not gonna try too hard or at all to prevent that. That’s the idea. And by the end, he realizes what’s important again and corrects this behavior.

        The Bat-brand was not a willful, active act to get people killed. He did it as his own thing, and it turned into that outside of his control (and his awareness for at least part of the story).
        Shooting vehicles is not the same as shooting people.
        It was not direct. All indirect recklessness and brutality and loopholes - like Nolan’s Batman mixed with TDKReturns Batman and put through much more traumatic situations.
        Zack intended for all of the kills to be indirect, he even said so. So even if you think something goes beyond that, you have to chalk it up to spectacle (because we know how Zack loves that) and simply assume they lived or whatever - just like every other comic book movie does.

        From what I recall, he unloaded a bajillion warning shots onto the ground for a good stretch and then hit the car shooting at him. There was a guy outside that car who might have been affected by the explosion, but Batman didn’t directly shoot him.

        He shoots it up and it starts rolling as he drives through. That’s all. No different from Christian Bale blowing up a dojo, flipping over innocent police cars with explosives, “not saving” Ra’s al Ghul, pushing Two-Face off a building, and fatally crashing Talia al Ghul’s vehicle or Arkham Knight Batman shooting missiles at and ripping through manned vehicles in which the passengers survive.
        There’s no explicitly stated reason he does it, from what I recall, but my reasoning is what most would figure, I’d imagine. And it is then later revealed that the results of that branding were coming from a setup by Lex Luthor, and the next time we see Batman wield that brand, they make a point of showing us he chooses no longer to use it.

        No, the point is this: in superhero movies, and especially Batman movies, and especially especially when involving the Batmobile, assumed deaths often don’t count. And the deaths of the BvS chase scene are in fact assumed. Those men all had airbags and seatbelts, too. And he certainly gave them a chance to not try to destroy his car, but they didn’t take it. So he shot theirs. Disabling the car by shooting it is not inherently lethal. If they happened to die from the resulting injuries, that’s not his problem. What Batfleck is is Nolan’s Batman and all of the indirect or unintentional killing that comes with, but picked up a notch in the areas of recklessness and brutality, because he is older and more hardened and jaded and he doesn’t care as much and he’s angrier.

        The one outside the warehouse he blew up after having sent a bajillion warning shots, and the people were outside the car, so I’d say that’s indirect (and still assumed, to be honest).
        No, it’s more like he shot the car, and the car just happened to blow up - “Whoops. Oh well. Screw those guys.” And did they die? Likely. Still isn’t seen, though. He wanted to stop the shooting and stop the cars, not to kill the people. But if the people ended up dying in the process, he wasn’t going to care too much.

He did not shoot the man himself, but if the man was affected by the explosion, so be it. Considering this is an extra reckless and ruthless Batman, and he was in a major time crunch to save Martha’s life, I’d say this is fair and indirect enough. Heck, Bale outright killed a couple of people when he didn’t have time to do anything else in order to save innocent lives - this is technically even more merciful than that.

        I believe the gunfire in the Batmobile chase mainly hit the chasis, which did show damage later, but it’s hard to say how much of that was from hitting Superman as opposed to the gun. But either way, surely enough concentrated turret fire is going to damage the Batwing and endanger his life. It’s not invincible. He has to avoid too much damage, just like any military craft would.
        A bad guy is standing at a parked car with a turret. The Batwing starts continuously firing off shots a block away. Batman has given him the chance to run.
        Well a car blowing up near me isn’t necessarily going to kill me, so there is an argument to be made for that. Especially when I am given a chance to run because he starts laying down fire very visibly way ahead of time. And especially considering the time constraints and his already more ruthless nature at this point, so he doesn’t really want and really CAN’T try to hard to save everybody from everything - once again I point to Christian Bale’s handling the situation with Two-Face and Talia.

        Like what could he have on there? Also keep in mind, depending on the origins of this Batman’s vehicles, he may be at the mercy of what Wayne Enterprises has to offer. My theory about the Batwing, for example, is that it is based on an experimental prototype craft for military use, and that would be expected to have guns. The Batmobile does have the winch thing, which is cool and very classic Batman-y.
        But it wasn’t milliseconds, so it was a warning shot :P

        If we go off of this assumption that it’s a military design, we might conclude its original purpose - since it is small enough to navigate within cities and is used by Batman primarily for stealthily and quickly moving around Gotham - that its main function was to do something similar in the military setting, perhaps used to make undetected attacks or drops in enemy territory, where such stealth would be necessary, and/or in environments not traditionally traversable by other fighter jets and such. Those settings don’t sound like they would call so much for nonlethal weaponry to me.
        I can’t judge anything in JL yet, haven’t seen it all in context. Heck, for all we know, he DOES end up using Cyborg’s technology. But I gotta say, I’m not a big fan of the new look - not as aesthetically pleasing as the design in BvS. Creative or not, though, it’s practical, makes sense, is realistic, and works. That’s all we really need, bare minimum. Would a bunch of fancy toys be cool? Sure. That’s we have that awesome winch thing. But it’s not necessary. The only thing that’s necessary is SOMETHING for offense and to deter enemies’ attacks and such. And that’s what we got.
        And actually, now that I’m thinking about it, I think they were very intentional in their simplicity with the Batmobile’s weapons. A quote comes to mind from the BvS Tech Manual’s description of his utility belt: “The evolution and appearance of Batman’s Utility Belt in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice quietly serves as a reinforcement of the wider character of this Batman. He’s not about flashy gadgets. Sure, he has them, but everything is about serving his cause, not about how it looks. So it is with the belt. He’s hiding plenty of clever items in there, but he’s not fussy about them. They need to be readily available, hence the boxy, one-size-fits-all nature of the holders on the belt.” I think that says a lot about Batman’s personality in BvS, very practical, not a whole lot of care, just wants to get the job done.
        Why not? I’m fine with it or without it. But knowing you and your preference for realism, there is no doubt that is the only way to go from that regard.

        All sounds a bit uneccesary to me, considering this is a reckless and brutal Batman. This is a Batman where, it one light punch would do the trick, he’s gonna punch hard and multiple times.
        But this is a Batman who is more willing to let those indirect type kills happen around him more often. And again, Bat vehicles have guns. That’s sort of the expectation now.
        It’s been awhile since I’ve seen Arrow, but I think they sound different enough, don’t they? Regardless, if it’s not broken, don’t fix it. I seem to remember BvS’ voice modulator mainly jut sounding deep and creepy, and only overtly robotic when it was malfunctioning during the Batman/Superman fight.
        Still, though, realism. That’s the only way. He would almost DEFINITELY do that.

        Using a rubber bullet is not gonna blow things up or take things out nearly as effectively - automotive in nature or otherwise. So bullets do pack more of a “punch” that this rougher Batman may deem necessary or at least more practical for his mission. And perhaps that is out of character, in a sense, and perhaps that is perfect, since he is going through a time when he is “acting out of character,” as it were. Or else why would Alfred be upset with him? And why would Superman care about his methods?
        He never uses the weapons directly against human beings, once again.
        The fact that the bat-vehicles have been established as having guns in previous films kind of makes that a staple of them that we can’t expect a director to remove or blame him for not thinking to. Using them for whatever practical reason Batman needs at the time is what I would expect, so if that means blowing up a wall, so be it, or if that means immobilizing a vehicles that’s trying to destroy the Batmobile, so be it - and if that means those within that vehicle might get hurt or killed indirectly/unintentionally in the process, since this is a hardened and rough and broken Batman who just wants to get his job done quickly, oh well.
        I’m pretty sure a good percentage of the people in Gotham who have heard Bruce Wayne speak on television or whatever (which may be a good number) would recognize that’s Bruce Wayne’s voice trying to be deep and gravelly :P The only way around that is if they make Batman a Robin Williams type guy who can change his voice really dramatically, but that could be cheesy. Then there’s also the potential throat damage problem, which Batman would surely never risk. I mean, it’s hard for me to admit, too, ‘cause I really like the plain-voice interpretations of the likes of Kevin Conroy and Roger Craig Smith and Christian Bale (particularly in the first two TDK movies), but in the end, if Bruce Wayne is this billionaire utilizing all of these advanced technology and gadgets, why would he not ever have thought to use a voice modulator? It just seems a little unrealistic and inexplicable.
        Clark Kent is some random reporter in the huge company that is the Daily Planet. How many people have seen his face, let alone heard his voice? Now, how many of those people have also gotten a clear look at the blue and red blur that soars through the sky and fights aliens far away? Heard his voice? The number becomes extremely small. Probably just Lois and Martha, really. That’s why he really doesn’t need a disguise of any kind. But in addition to that, he does put on glasses, which actually would make a difference, especially considering not many people get a very good look at either of his identities. And one must also keep in mind that most people probably are not expecting the invincible flying alien god in the sky to have a secret human identity, and those who might probably wouldn’t have a clue that that identity would be based in Metropolis.

        They took the character down a natural path of development based on the story that is not completely out of line with or a betrayal of the spirit of some states he has been in in the comics. It’s a fair interpretation and a good character choice for the story.
        This Batman probably uses them for that, too, but in this instance, he had to use them for something else.

        Lol, love the example, but it’s not *quite* the same thing. Just as TDK Batman can crash Talia’s vehicle without being counted guilty of having the intent to kill her, even though that’s what ended up happening, DCEU Batman should be able to shoot at a car in order to damage/immobilize it and stop the gunfire without the intent to kill the men inside (but also perhaps without the care for if they do get killed). Shooting up a car is not necessarily going to make it blow up. And it blowing up is not necessarily going to kill the passengers. He just wanted to stop them.
        All I can say is Zack Snyder’s word is final, and he intends for it to all be indirect, so we must interpret it in that way, even if it may apparently conflict with your idea of “indirect.” And if truly no way can be used to explain that for it to fit into that description (which I would argue, as stretchy as some of the arguments may be, is not the case), then that may be counted as an unfortunate but hopefully minor instance of poor execution on the movie’s part.
        It’s not clear exactly what happened to the car in all the fire. All we absolutely know for sure is that Batman shot it, and it started rolling (which might have caused the actual explosion - not sure, will have to review the footage). Then Batman drove past.
        An alternative explantation of what they might have been thinking that Batman would have been thinking is that he first shot the car to stop it, it went too far (resulting in an explosion he didn’t quite originally plan for), and so he, knowing they had already died from that, did not need to mind the car’s passengers any further.
        I don’t think rubber bullets would do the trick for stopping a machine gun turret thing and a rocket launcher.

        Yeah, I’m not quite as comfortable with the idea of him outright being a Punisher type. The no-kill rule has become a pretty integral part of the character, and ultimately, it just makes more sense. Like you have said, if he had no qualms about killing whatsoever, he would use a gun.
        There is the fact that he did outright kill in the past, before the rule was established, though, and that he has broken his rule before, which I think are fair points in a way, but ultimately shouldn’t be used as anything more than a defense for softening his rule than outright not having one.
        But that’s too much restraint for this point of his life. That’s something Nolan’s Batman has done. This one is more brutal and careless than he was. I think this is a fairly natural evolution from the no-killing-except-for-indirectly-sometimes-rule Nolan’s Batman had, after going through what this Batman has gone through and has become.

        Such as with Darkseid. I know some say that doesn’t count, but he even uses a gun and it is direct and deliberate. Or there was a time when he locked up KGBeast to starve. Which was totally retconned by the next writer, but still.
        There is still a line. Take the line from TDK Trilogy. It’s slightly blurred. Now, starting from there, introduce that mindset to all of the things this Batman has gone through and become; the line becomes a bit more blurry. But it’s still there. The only time he is about to actually, definitely, clearly cross it, is when he is going to kill Superman, who had before justified by painting him as this alien monster more than a person, in his madness.

If so, then that leaves only the discussion of whether he should truly have been hardened, etc. in the first place, or if that would be impossible for a true Batman to become, even under the same circumstances.

        No it isn’t, because all of the Batman films up to this point have contributed to his cultural identity and how we know him to be as a society. These movies do not exist in a vacuum. Zack Snyder and company were very aware of TDK Trilogy’s existence when making BvS. And they should expect all of us to be, too. We know certain things about Batman and Superman that they can expect us to understand without having to go into too much depth rehashing.
        For the fortieth time, he did not use guns directly against human beings.
        We don’t know what this Bruce Wayne has done. Like you said, he has done similar things in the comics. There may be people interviewing Bruce Wayne all the time - he is a celebrity after all. Maybe those Turkish Airline commercials were canon, lol!

        Snyder’s use of influences from the past did not make Batfleck generic. Certainly you don’t consider BvS’ a “generic” Batman, lol?
        And perhaps it wasn’t clear enough. That could be a fair argument. They could have easily fit a line in from Batman dismissively telling a concerned Alfred watching his actions that no one was directly killed or something. But with that concession, I must also say we can’t really blame Zack and company for not doing so, because he explicitly cites Nolan’s handling of that same issue as his inspiration/justification for how he handled it in BvS. Nolan didn’t have to have a line like that, and that’s a fair point for Zack. Nolan’s Batman directly killed Two-Face. And he indirectly killed a number of others throughout his films. You criticize BvS and then ignore that at the same time.
        I see where you’re going, okay. Yeah, there’s definitely some actually really cool stuff they could go with (which is not entirely off the table for future films). And I’m sure they’re going to keep improving it slightly as time goes on - see what works, what different directors like, etc. But they cannot make it sound too natural. I understand the need to make it definitely identifiably synthetic/electronic, because in the story it has to be known and feel believable to the audience that this is an electronic device physically altering his voice.

        In this world, a cross between realistic and comics is perfect for Batman. This is the world of Man if Steel, which was Superman in a realistic world. So take that, and it might be a bit more fantastical than TDK Trilogy, but still more grounded than Christopher Reeve’s Superman films, so a Batman in this universe would be necessity be realistic, yet a level higher in the fantastical.
        My impression was that Batman killed Dent because he HAD to. It was the only way to stop him from murdering the innocent in a horrible way. I’m not sure if we can prove one way or the other. Certainly, though, Bale’s Batman DID deliberately - yet indirectly - kill Ra’s al Ghul.
        The death mark was supposed to be Lex’s setting Batman up to be that, though, and regardless is indirect (he’s not killing the person, and he’s not telling anyone that’s what the symbol means, and it probably did not mean that to him).
        A lot of people don’t see the survivability of the man Superman blasted through the wall in the beginning of the movie, either, but we’re explicitly told he lived. Superhero movies do that. If there is even any possibility, it has to be accounted for.
        Eh, that’s kind of a cop out though. People would feel like that’s cheaty or halfhearted or unrealistic. You have to convince them. I think now there’s more of an opportunity to gradually make the voice sound more natural over time now that people get it, though.

He is a broken character(A huge theme of the entire movie was that it was a deconstruction of these two iconic characters). He is blinded by rage. This is a world where, up until this point, the only types of heroes to exist have been grounded powerless vigilantes such as Batman(and he might have been the only one). I think it is really interesting to suggest that, the only thing that could bring this version of Batman out of the darkness would be some larger than life entity. Such an entity, in this case, would be Superman. Superman is a symbol of hope, and by the end of the movie, his actions have restored hope to Batman. Get it? And he wasn't just a straight up punisher. It is my belief that he never specifically went out at night with the intention of murdering people. I don't believe he ever said "okay I am now going to kill people". It just happened. He became reckless, uncaring, unforgiving, and rage filled that he started getting more rough and brutal and thus it no longer concerned him if criminals happened to die as he carried out his crusade. And if they bite, he would bite back. As for the Gordon, thing, There isn't much to be said there. Its not far fetched to suggest that Gordon is simply willing to give Batman a second chance in my opinion. Maybe he is angry at him in JL? Maybe he is hesitant to work with him again? Maybe he knows that some bad shit is going down and Batman is the only he knows that may be able to do something about it? Makes sense to me.

And again this thing with the physique is just stupid and largely an invalid argument. Batman is supposed to be physically imposing. Bale's suit made him look like a ninja, which Batman is not. Once again, we KNOW the muscles are not his actual muscles. There is literally a scene of him staring at the suit and you can clearly see the muscles there. That's not the point.       1. Again, I'm talking about Batman, not Affleck, not Bruce Wayne, but Batman. The guy in the cape looks to be quicker and stronger than previous iterations. I'm referring to the design of the Batman. It matters nought what Ben looks like, it's about what the guy in the cape is doing.
      2. Does that matter? The illusion is about him looking like he's wearing a minimal amount of armour. It achieved it's goal.
      3. Different Batmen, different interpretations. Ben neither had the time or story to do what Bale did. There's no need for a middle-aged, world-weary man to act like a playboy, change his voice or put on a facade. He's beyond that stage of his life. Ben is more like Christian Bale at the beginning of The Dark Knight Returns, except that Ben is 250 minutes of what Bale did for a few minutes.
      4. I'm not even going to touch this one. It's been answered ad nauseam. There's no rule-book that says no Batman interpretation should ever kill.

    Going on from that, perhaps the praise of Affleck is a bit over-the-top here. He has certainly not given us the same layered and emotional performance that Christian Bale delivered. But that’s not a criticism, I would say, as this Batman has only had one movie (as opposed to three), in which he was not even THE main character (but A main character), and in which he really did not have a lot of opportunity in the story to express much else than one or two sides of the character. But he did express what he had the opportunity to express quite well, I would argue. Even Kevin Conroy appreciates Affleck’s acting as his favorite so far.
    Where I think most of the praise actually comes from in this Batman, though, is not as much the actor himself (apart from the fact that Ben Affleck LOOKS quite good for the part), but in his presentation and characterization. BvS had succeeded like no other Batman film had before in giving us a Batman who is hardcore and paranoid and scary and fights like Batman, aspects of the character that were all played and presented really well and in a really fan-pleasing way. Also, the suit. Most appreciate its comics-accurate look.

    Just personal preference on my part. I can't stand Jackson Pollock paintings, and think they're hideous; but a lot of people see beauty in them. I can't really fault them for that.
    I read some of the stuff you said further down the thread; I respect your opinion, and think it is a legitimately good opinion. I see this Batman very differently than you do though. I've read tons of Batman in my lifetime, and feel that I have a strong sense of who the character is supposed to be (canon-wise). That said, I also really enjoy these characters on a spectrum. The Injustice series was a whole lot of fun for me, for example, because it completely shattered the norm.
    This Batman is my favorite so far on film because it's a unique take on him and his inner demons. I enjoyed seeing Batman get very close to losing his damn mind. I've talked with some folks about PTSD, and feel Affleck gave a good portrayal of that (but I do understand how it can be seen as cheesy). I like that he lost sight of who he wanted to become, and developed a singular focus filled entirely with hatred and paranoia disguised as "heroism."
    Physically, the beefiness is very noticeable, but I do like the "brawler" aspect of this version. I think the design of the suit fit the choice to use an older Batman (the overly muscular aspect seemed like a deliberate choice by Bruce to make himself more imposing in his 40s, but that's probably just my own thought).
    You did bring up a lot of good points on why he could be seen as an inadequate version of Batman though. Affleck is just one of many various interpretations for me. And I've been enjoying every second of it.

  You know, that was my takeaway here too. I remember thinking it to be noticeably strange in the trailer that he's holding it and tosses it to Arthur... how can he hold it? But I brushed it off as maybe the rules being different in the DCEU or something.
  But now, after we had that behind the scenes pic of Zack with what appears to be the King of Atlantis and a DIFFERENT trident - not to mention Arthur's classic color scheme - I'm starting to think that moment may be *much* more significant...
  I had a little fanfic in my head that that isn't the real trident, or it's depowered and in a weakened form. A few articles back I suggested that maybe Orm has it, and we'll possibly see Arthur rightly take it from him in the Aquaman solo next year. :)

If you care to watch this scene from BVS I think this shows great emotion from Affleck as Bruce.
As for greatest ever Batman on film I think he probably needs a solo outing to cement that claim.

The formula for the DCEU to succeed and be loved by the critics is to make the plot simple and not be over philosophical ....WW being an example , they can keep the tone balanced not too dark or light and have the dialogue be philosophical that way they keep the die hard fans happy as well
