Jason Momoa on Aquaman's beef with Cyborg in 'Justice League', and how Zack Snyder saved his life

The December issue of Total Film features a new image of Jason Momoa as Aquaman from Justice League (pictured above), as well as a new interview. Momoa gives us new details on Aquaman's relationships with the other members of the Justice League, and even goes on to say how Zack Snyder saved his life.

"Me and Cyborg do not get along at all," Momoa said. "I don't trust him as far as I can throw him. And over time, that will change. It's the same thing with Bruce. I'm like, 'Nah, I'm not buying into it".

When asked about director Zack Snyder having to step down from Justice League after the death of his daughter, Momoa had nothing but praise. "Zack is someone who kind of saved my life. This opportunity to be where I am is all because of him. So if you like Aquaman, you can pretty much thank Zack Snyder instantly, because none of it would've come true if it weren't for him.

Momoa's comments are similar to what Gal Gadot has said in the past. She was on the verge of quitting acting, before Zack Snyder cast her as Wonder Woman in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.

Right casting is not a big deal. It's a must. It's basic. Every actor in the movie should be cast right. That's what you see in Marvel and Fox movies. It's only WB and Sony that have hit or miss.

  Since I'm sure this is where you're going with this (at least in part), I'd submit that Jesse Eisenberg was cast perfectly for the version of Lex they brought to the screen. That that version had nothing to do with the post Crisis Lex is irrelevant, as it's apparent that no one calling the shots, including the WB executives and probably the money guys at Ratpac, had any interest in bringing that version of Lex to the screen.

    In other words, he was perfect for playing himself, and WB wanted him as such, right? Yeah, I still call that a miscast. In fact, he even admitted in one of his interviews that he approached Lex by playing himself.
    I also call miscast on Amy Adams -- she is not Lois and she has little chemistry with Cavil.
    Finally, I call miscast on Affleck because, as we see, he generates nowhere near as much excitement as Downey Jr. or Evans, which he should. All of that personal baggage with alcoholism and cheating on his wife did not help him either. And if the rumor is true, and he does want out, that speaks volumes about his integrity and commitment to the property. Simply put, he is not universally loved and that's a problem for Batman.
    On that note, we'll see what happens with Amber Heard.

      I actually think it's the opposite. Maybe not day 1 when Affleck was cast, but when people started warming up to the idea of Batfleck, the amount of hate and blatant dishonesty towards Bale (and Nolan) grew to obscene and frankly, pathetic levels. At the time of the trilogy, especially the BB and TDK days, I am completely confident in saying Bale was universally loved. I really don't get how you say West was "universally loved", while Bale wasn't. I guess I can't know because I wasn't born yet.. But West's Batman catered to a super young demographic. They could've picked any actor and they would've get the job done. What Bale did was unique and special and only Bale could've done what he did. Keaton, to a lesser extent, did that as well. But I don't see how he was any more or less "loved" (at the time) than Bale was.

      I only say that West is universally loved, because he more than likely has a special place in fans hearts, even before he had died. And quite frankly, I never cared for movie news or fan discussions when I was a kid during the TDK franchise's reign. So I could be wrong about. I just remember that whenever Bale was brought up, people would mock him for his voice. And I don't remember any hatred towards the Nolan films even when people didn't like TDKR.

      The warming to Affleck came with shots of him in the costume and interviews showing his dedication to the role and understanding of the character at the time. And he set all doubters to change their mind after his performance in BvS. Even haters of the movie enjoyed seeing the most comic accurate version of Bruce.
      The distaste for Bale occurred in his last film. But again, I blame Nolan, not Bale. He’s a great actor. Nolan’s version of Batman just wasn’t on par with what a Batman fan expects.

      Bale was a good Bruce Wayne, but a terrible Batman. Not really his fault though since Nolan dumbed down the character, made him an ugly costume, had terrible fight choreography, and worst of all made him talk WAY too much inside the costume. Keaton nailed Batman perfectly inside the costume but never sold me on Bruce by being 5’9” with zero muscle definition and just acting like a weirdo(probably Burton’s idea)...
      Affleck is the only live action actor to nail both parts. I agree his apparent wavering of commitment is disheartening, but it doesn’t diminish his skills within the role.

      That’s a pretty baseless claim, and many would disagree.
      Ben Affleck is actually one of the most universally liked aspects of the DCEU right now among most of the audience, so I’m not sure what you’re talking about. Even those who don’t like his characterization still appreciate the casting for his acting and appearance.

As for Affleck yeah Kerk is right the general audiances couldn't care for him, i work at a HMV store (a massive Film/Music shop in the UK) and part time at a Cinema and most people who i talk to about films don't care for BvS and Affleck, some even forget he even played Batman last year, most want Bale back actually. You see i work in the real life and see what the majority like and dislike, thats how i know so much about what they like because i see them and talk to them everyday.

      RT is not gospel. there are tons of other reviews from major sites, YouTube, magazine articles etc. I have read dozens of them. Some did not like some aspects of how Bataan was characterized like how he kills but hardly any of them had negative things to say about afflecks actual performance... they are two different things

      I never said Affleck was bad, i actually liked him a lot and look forward to his solo film however it doesn't mean he was widely popular, just because something is liked doesn't make it popular. If Affleck never returned, film critics and the general audiance would barely bat an eyelid. He's liked yes but he ain't popular, again i work in two places what deal with the general audiance and film fans, i make a point of chatting with them about films and with that i know full well what the general consensus is with BvS and Affleck.

He might not be universally loved right now, but personally I think over time more and more people will come around and start to see the flaws with Bale's version.       Just because a bunch of DCEU fanboys love to praise him and DCEU doesn't make it the general consensus, you are talking out of your ass there. The general consensus is at best indifferent, the general audiances (AKA as the money bringers) couldn't care for BvS and MoS (BvS massive 2nd week drop is prove of that) and they don't even know who Snyder is because they don't give a fuck about directors unless you're one of the top ones ever (something Snyder isn't). Most comic book fans don't care for BvS and most are happy to see Snyder go, the big fanbase of the DCEU and Snyder is actually the vocal fanboy minority, if BvS was this masterpiece what only criics didn't like then it would have crossed a Billion and i would be seeing more talk of the film (outside of the internet) and Affleck and Cavil what i don't because the majority don't give a fuck about those versions of the characters or Snyder.

      He always uses the same provably false arguments. Like with BvS historic 2nd weekend drop-off. I've debated the EXACT same thing with him. He said it's due to critics. How can that be true when the embargo lifted FOUR days before release, and made more than 80 MIL on Friday alone (tracking at an opening of more than 190 MIL). It's only when the audiences actually saw the film for themselves, that the box office started to drop. The 2nd weekend drop was huge, yes. But the first weekend, Friday to Sunday drop was equally bad (which is something no one talks about). This proves, beyond doubt, that the number 1 factor as to why BvS failed commercially (relatively speaking) is not because of critics, but because of bad word of mouth. And that bad word of mouth came mostly from audiences. If what he says is true and the biggest reason as to why BvS dropped so much in the 2nd week was due to critical reaction, then BvS would have NEVER made that 80 MIL on the first day. Because that statistic was pretty much equal to prior box office predictions, which were tracking the film to open at 190 MIL, with 80 on Friday. Case in point, critics have power. But the single biggest reason as to why BvS failed to double its opening weekend, is because audiences didn't like the film. The facts clearly prove that. But yeah, he keeps lying about these things, because he can't face reality. It's infuriating to talk to this guy. He's no intellectual honesty whatsoever.

      Well, it seems though there was still a sizable portion who didn’t like BvS, most of the general audience who actually ended up seeing it, liked it, regardless of the box office drop off.
      BvS COULD have made that much. If the critics were positive. Unfortunately, all that negative press severely hinders masses of people coming and spending their money on the movie. And BvS had a lot working against it other than that, too.
      At that time those superheroes were not C-B list. Hulk and Captain America were already fairly well known (mainly Hulk), but that all ceased to matter after each of their individual movies came out and were super successful - they were household names at that point. So don’t downplay Avengers or the fact it didn’t have anything like what BvS had working against it.

      Fuck sake critic reviews would have mattered jackshit if people liked the film because word of mouth is more powerful then critic reviews (look at every Tranformer film before the last one or Suicide Squad) and as that 2nd week drop proved the word of mouth wasn't good for BvS, if it wasn't starring Batman and Superman it would have no doubt made a great deal less, jesus this known fact.
      As for Avengers actually Hulk aside and at a push Iron Man the heroes weren't that well known, box office was ok for Thor and Cap but nothing special and not enough to make them household names, Black Window only had the actress playing her as a selling point and Hawkeye no one had even heard of off outside of comic fans. I'm not downplaying when Box Office proves what i'm saying is right, anyway doesn't matter because the Trinity are more famous then any of those characters including Hulk so it should have been close to the success of least AoU or Civil War especially when the last 2 live action film starring Batman made over a billion even if Ledger had a effect on TDK.

      You’d be surprised how many people consult RT scores to decide whether they go or not. And like I said, there WAS a sizable amount who didn’t like it. But don’t underestimate the power of the critics’ voice.
      Iron Man was a hit, and Thor was almost as much of one as Iron Man, both important successes for the MCU, so... Captain America made less, but he is still a bigger comics character than many in the Marvel lineup, from what I understand, and I would be pretty surprised if most people did not know something about him, considering this is the fourth movie into the Universe, and I think it had a bigger opening than X-Men: First Class, didn’t it? That’s something. But regardless, even if none of the heroes were known (which is certainly not the case for most of the heroes), the first ever superhero crossover event is sure to draw more people. Plus it’s a Disney movie by this time, so there’s always gonna be a good amount of money.
      Superman’s popularity had been dwindling for awhile now, and Wonder Woman even more so (not to mention many people probably didn’t know she was in it beforehand); Batman was really the big draw at this point. AoU and CW were the 11th and 13th movies of an incredibly popular and successful franchise and both featured a gazillion well known and beloved superheroes, not to mention the power of Disney, and the critical praise. It would’ve been nice if BvS made that much - it certainly deserved it - but there was no way it was going to happen with all the countless things working against it, and all the things working FOR those Marvel movies.

I'm starting to see a few people popping up here and there who seem annoyed that Gal is so loved. :P Sigh.

Like, mid-casting process, I can understand being skeptical, but when she's done such a great job and charmed so many hearts, I feel like that should be enough for everyone to just relax, even if you have a better fan-cast.

This is standard from what I've seen (e.g. Jennifer Lawrence) people love the under dog celebrity then get tired of them when they've made it, not saying I understand the psychology of it but it seems to be the trend for whatever reason

  You're totally on-point. Even with rising stars, same deal. They also find little nitpicks or rumors to blow out of proportion to justify witch-hunting them. It's like they forget all the good stuff somehow - and even forget they are people.
  Mark Hamill described actor treatment pretty powerfully when he talked about showbusiness in relation to people shredding little 10 year old Jake Lloyd over his performance in The Phantom Menace. Being an actor is brutal.

Wait... WHAT? Survived a battle with Doomsday? As in the BvS Doomsday (the one they allure to "a deformity so hateful to sight and memory")? I guess that's what Zack was talking about way back when he said "you can't just bring Doomsday into this and pretend nothing happened" (or something like that).
Only thing that makes me think this isn't legit, is that I believe they "confirmed" Steppenwolf isn't Darkseid's uncle in the DCEU, but his nephew. But I'm not so sure they actually, really confirmed that.

I never knew how much I needed this interpretation of Aquaman. I loved reading through the New 52 volumes, but never fully felt the surliness of Arthur and his disinterest in the throne. Momoa seems to be bringing it to life beautifully. Plus, the suit design is perfect, in my opinion; I've never been into the loud orange (not yellow *face palm) and green of the books.

I'm really looking forward to seeing him in action come November and next year. "Star Wars underwater" sounds fuuuuucking awesome.

      I thought you were saying that you figured they only mentioned those positive things about Zack because “they’re supposed to,” as in what they’re saying might not be true, but they’re saying it to look good. So I was just explaining that unfortunately, since a lot of people have disliked Zack’s movies, having his name attached to a film is more likely to be considered a bad thing by the public, not a good thing. So, since they’re doing that anyway, it must mean they’re being honest, since they have nothing to gain through lying about his involvement.

https://uploads.disquscdn.c... According to my sources, Jason Momoa screwed up an opportunity with Marvel. Asking for too much to play Drax in Guardians of the Galaxy, I think. Even though his Conan movie had flopped, GotG was so obscure, that he didn't realize the potential. He had a strong fan base from his TV work, but he stuggled to find the right movie role.

Obviously Momoa was made to play Lobo, but Aquaman is way more important. Zack Snyder thinking outside the box with that casting, was the right move. A diverse and kinda intimidating take on Aquaman, is really cool to see.

Fairly certain Momoa himself said that he had the opportunity to play Drax but wanted a meatier role than 'Unintelligent Brute', so he turned them down. Could you imagine Momoa yelling "MY NIPPLES!!" while jetpacking up to a spaceship?
On a slight side not Bautista was good in Blade Runner 2049.

    I don’t think it IS going to be that big of a deal in the movie. Maybe we’re just operating under different assumptions. I wouldn’t expect ANY trailers to make a trailer specifically tailored to every characters’ dynamic relationships. I wouldn’t expect LOTR to make a trailer devoted to showing us how Gimli and Legolas aren’t friends initially - it’s a minor arc in a very huge trilogy.

      It's because my younger brother listens to rap. Current day rap mostly. Which includes the likes of Tyga, and his "music" (it's not even right to call it that) is just absolute fucking garbage. I mean, looking at the lyrics of Rack City, Molly, or worst of all word on the street. What an abomination, lol. These songs should be criminalized for the remainder of human existence.

I'm stoked! Casting is very important in film, especially when portraying a character with a lengthy history. You can't I can't imagine Reeves playing a flawed inexperience Superman but Cavill I can. Same with Affleck as Batman, Bale was a fantastic Batman but I'm not sure he can generate that experienced deep in the hole

Affleck can or Keaton's solitary. At least to a point where it pushes people off. Same for RDJ as Stark, Clooney can pull the charm but not emotional redemption. Well he can but not show it as externally as RDJ can. Really it's the Spider-Man cast all over again. Toby was great young Parker barley being Spider but that's about it. Garfield was a better Spider than Parker but not a beginner Spider more of an experienced I've been doing this for one plus years. His Parker lacked a bit but that's because they didn't age him as much as his Spider persona. Holland was a great in-between but for a high school beginning Spider not an experienced one. It's all about the settings. Synder has always had a good eye for that Watchman being the perfect example. Couldn't have cast it better. Hero Roles are committed roles; Their iconography is everlasting and the iteration is remembered so besides Batfleck who I hope stays I'm glad the other actors understand and are committed to it. Marvel struggles with this with their actors and I hope for the best for them too. As for film reviews and critics...well...Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho, Stanley Kubrick's The Shinning, and Ridley Scott's Blade Runner where met with mixed to close but not quite just right at the line negative reviews at release but now decades later hold 89-98 on RT and are regarded as some of the greatest films of all time so..meh.
