'Shazam' director David F. Sandberg confirms April 2019 release date

Way back in October 2014, Warner Bros. released a slate of DC Comics movies and release dates. Things have shifted around considerably since then, but one movie that appears to have held up is Shazam.

Shazam was given an April 5, 2019 release date back in 2014 and according to director David F. Sandberg, that's still the plan. "April 2019. It takes a long time to make vfx heavy movies," Sandberg said on reddit last week, in a reply to a fan asking about the movie's release date.

Right now Sandberg is deep into pre-production on Shazam. We're still waiting on casting news, and that should be coming soon since cameras are expected to start rolling by February of next year. Stay tuned to Batman News for all the latest!

    Apparently, Cena has been in comedic movies(none I've seen) and he has good comedic timing. I've only seen a few meme gifs of him and the guy seems like he can play a grown-up kid. And he also has a huge fan base(also apparently). I think WB will end up casting an unknown, to be honest.

I have no problem IF he gets cast. I think he could pull of the child like quality that Shazam should have. We're not talking Batman or Superman here. Regardless I'm sure they'll have few people in mind for the role and they'll pick the best actor, or wrestler, for the part. :)

I get the same impression. They’ll probably throw in an Easter egg or two about “the Gotham bat” just to confirm it is, and to quash talk of discontinuity and disorganization.

  I mean the emphasis they kept putting on it being its own thing with its own tone, and the fact its under a subsidiary of WB, unlike any of the other DCEU movies... Plus, I just really can’t see a character like Shazam fitting in his world.

      Apart from the “gods” (which I believe are going to be given extraterrestrial background in JL), everything has been overall pretty “realistic” and predominantly science fiction based and definitely tonally serious. I just can’t see a little boy with magical powers romping around coexisting in the same continuity as Man of Steel and Batman v Superman.

      Dude Enchantress an actual witch was introduced in the third movie of the universe. The DCEU is not as grounded to reality as you pretend, we have a witch, we had aliens, and Greek mythology yet you think that Shazam would be too much?

      Suicide Squad was bad, though, so it hardly counts, lol - but either way, she and Incubus fall under the “gods” category, which, like I said, I genuinely believe will get an extraterrestrial explanation in JL.
      Aliens thoroughly explained with theoretical scientific concepts in a grounded sci-fi movie, yes.
      Greek mythology = the “gods” I was referring to.
      Yes, I do think a little boy romping around with magic powers would be an awkward fit with the tone that has been established overall.

      Ehhh I don’t know... The whole “Shazam!” thing and the fact he’s a kid and it’s just it all seems pretty corny... Not that Enchantress wasn’t, but it’s not like that makes it okay to put in more like that... I mean, at this point, Marvel can get away with sticking pretty much anything in their movies. But I don’t think DC can or should.

      The best thing DC can do right now is to allow its stand-alone movies to be free from the shackles of one singular tone, to be whatever it needs to be.
      The origin, to me, for Shazam would have to be at an extent serious, but I'm all for the whole a, "kid in a grown up's body."

      Because why not? People are different, heroes have a different outlook on things and the best visions come from allowing the character to be who they truly are, not handcuffed down to a single thing. A restriction of tone can be shifted.
      I doubt the majority of people would want to see Shazam in the WW, BvS or MoS tone anyways, maybe to a degree, but still anything is possible .

      I have no problem with letting characters be true to who they are and for the tone to shift a little accordingly - like the Flash, he should be fun - but it still has to feel like it fits in the world that has been established.
      It’s not just about tone, but level of verisimilitude and story elements and fundamental underlying concepts.

      I don't think the majority of people will really care about this kid who has the powers to transform into an adult like God. Whether it has extraterrestrial background or just a magical side of Earth (which will contrast Batman's realism because he doesn't understand magic and is logic mostly).
      Like I don't think the majority of people will care about the underlyings of it at all. I think more comic fans would sort of hate it if Shazam were to be in the DCEU and did not feel as if he is the character that he should be (kid in adult body). So if you give him that MvS tone, the majority wouldn't care either btw, but the Shazam fans will lose interest.
      Anyways, I'm all for it with the collision of two contrast beings and tones. It'll be like the comics and plus it can work. I feel like you're being too pessimistic man, lets wait and see how this all plays out.

      I’m not pessimistic, just a Nolanist at heart :P I like everything being as realistic as possible. That’s a big part of why I loved MoS so much.
      I’m sure some people would notice inconsistent flavors in the supposedly singular movie universe other than me. Like, imagine if Toy Story 4 were an R-rated horror movie, lol. Obviously there’s no way they could ever be that extreme, but in a slight way, it might happen, if not handled right.

      They can pull an mcu. Like they've got a gritty, grounded ninja guy, Daredevil, who fights in the dark streets in New York and on the other-side of the galaxy we have a talking duck. On one-side we have Cap Winter Soldier and the other-side we got Thor Ragnarok, two completely different tones.
      DCEU can add some flavours if they want, because at some stage we're gonna find the same flavour stale and we would like to taste some chocolate or strawberry.

      That’s a good point. But Marvel could get away with putting just about any crazy thing in there they want at this point. I’m not sure I want DC to follow suit necessarily... Perhaps the key is separation; if it is essentially its own thing, but could also be said to take it place in the DCEU somehow, sort of like how they do with Daredevil, perhaps that could please everyone on the spectrum.

      It'll expand their universe which would be a good thing. I just like to think it's possible for dceu to pull it off because the mcu have already set that precedent. To compete with the big dog you've got to load up the utility belt and be prepared for anything.

      I haven’t read any Shazam, so I can’t say firsthand knowledge, but I would challenge you to watch Man of Steel again and then ask yourself if a little boy with magic powers yelling “Shazam!” all the time would feel like a remote possibility...

      Of course it would. The tone of Man of Steel doesn't define ALL DC CHARACTERS in the movies going forward.
      It's a kid screaming his "power word", being struck by lightning and becoming a god. It's a very similar mechanism to what we've already seen in Wonder Woman.
      I don't know why it's hard to envision. Just watch the recent JL trailers. The tone to support characters like Shazam is already being established. Flash's demeanor is essentially what Shazam's is.
      Then we'll also have movies like JL Dark, which are essentially horror movies and we'll have The Batman which will be more dour in tone, but then Nightwing will be visually less colorful than JL but the character will be more upbeat than Batman. We're getting all of it.

      But what MoS does establish is that this is very much in the real world. And a little kid screaming “Shazam!” as he is magically transformed into a grownup superhero does not fit in that.
      I can always be proven wrong. Maybe it IS part of the DCEU, and maybe they will find a way to make it work. We will all be pleased then! Or, maybe it will be its own thing, and then we can all enjoy it as that.

      MoS didn't establish Olympian Gods, witches or Amazons, either, but the rest of the DCEU has. There's nothing altogether unique about the tone or story elements of Shazam that hasn't already been displayed in the current movies that would require that the story stand apart. I get that you can't envision the concept of Shazam in live-action but it's not really a wacky film that will stick out like a sore thumb. It'll be closer to Wonder Woman than, say, the Mask.

      But really, SS is a prime example of the kind of unbelievable tone we don’t want to go for. That shouldn’t be used as a justification for including anything in any future DC movies. Now that it’s in there, it’s got to be dealt with, and with some difficulty, it may be able to, but let’s not add another corny thing of that caliber to the mix on top of it. A little boy using magic to become a superhero is definitely uniquely out there compared to WW.
      I hope you’re right about that. I just can’t see that yet. Regardless, though, I’m sure I would thoroughly enjoy it in live action - it’s just its specifically being in the DCEU that I take issue with as of now.

      Well, WW could, and SS potentially could - though I find that one a bit harder to swallow - and I imagine Shazam would be about as believable as SS or less so, so I would prefer to have as little of those kinds of things as possible. Plus it’s just as a whole a lot cornier less serious than anything we’ve seen in the DCEU thus far...

      I know it's a little corny, but I find Shazam's premise to be charming. Also, I think the god vs god dynamic between him and Black Adam is pretty immense and can feel totally serious.

      Well I was hoping WW would :P But yeah, there was this quote I read from Charles Roven a little while ago where he seemed to suggest that JL was going to dive into the story of the whole Old Gods and New Gods situation. And I’m pretty sure they’re gonna make Steppenwolf and company out to be aliens, so that would imply the Old Gods were aliens, too. Thor’s little “advanced science is magic” thing is simple, but good enough.
      See, I had no problem with what they did in Thor lol, but I know a lot of people were irked by that.
      Oh yeah, I remember that. Well, I’m hoping that’s just him being a fanboy. But hey, I could totally be proven wrong, and if I am and the movie is done well enough, that might not even matter, and we can ALL enjoy it being part of the DCEU.

      As long as it's done well and makes for a strong story that doesn't rob anything of it's original majesty, I don't mind either way they navigate it. :)
      Thor's handling of it was on the tepid side to me. He's the kind of character that needs that oomph of holy righteousness, and we still haven't quite got there, and seem to be drifting more away from it.
      You know who is perfect for this scenario? Batman. Batman calling more aliens out for being false gods. I'd love to see him say it to Darkseid's face. "You were never a god..."
      We'd have to find a way to not make it feel repetitive after BvS of course. :P lol

      I think that’s part of the beauty of it. As time goes on In this universe, reality (or what we consider reality) is evolving and being added to. I don’t think it’d be impossible for magic to make sense alongside BvS

  From what I recall the director said something like “Yeah, it’s part of the DC world, but we’re really going to be focusing on our own tone separate from what the other films had” or something. It could just be as reliable as when Matt Reeves said The Batman wasn’t going to be part of the DCEU.

    Not sure what you mean by true fans. The only people out there that deliberately pit each 'fan group' against each other are internet sites that want and need clicks. I have zero issue with Marvel films or its fans.
    However, when Marvel and Netflix deliberately stage that Punisher bullshit just to garner free attention while every internet site has the 'DC v Marvel Nov 17' headline to feed the idiots, it kinda puts me in the red.
    Meanwhile Marvel gets loads of free attention for a crappy TV show that in no way will affect JL film.

      What I mean by true fans is, the ones that don’t hate everything Marvel, and love everything DC. The ones that can realize when Marvel puts out good content, and when DC doesn’t.
      However, that whole thing about The Punisher coming out the same day as Justice League is a little fishy on Marvel’s part. All they had to do was put it the week before, and everything would’ve been fine.

      First of all the amount of 'only DC fans out there that only like DC films' are so far and few between and only exist on some internet sites courtesy of said sites deliberate attempts to separate by headlines.
      Just for posterity, if anyone out there believe that GoTG V2 was anything but a poor sequel is not a fan of comics and just as bad as some of the DC boys you hate.

WB AND DC have no idea what they're doing. Where's Man of Steel 2? If Justice League gets less than 60 percent on rotten tomatoes and/or makes less than 1 billion dollars at the box office, they won't make Justice League 2. Dear Lord..... WHAT COWARDS! Nice. Shazam is a great character and his power levels rival that of Superman's, so hopefully they'll give us some crazy epic battle sequences.

Hopefully they cast an unknown in the role of adult Billy Batson. We don't need a pro-wrestler or whatnot or even someone super-athletic. Get the right guy and simply hand him over to Mark Twight/Gym Jones.

      Then again, if (the Ultimate Cut) BvS' entire first act was reworked, and the scenes at the end removed or shortened (like the extended funeral scene, which really wasn't necessary, and it dragged on for too long), That's immediately 1 hour you can take away from BvS and we'd be looking at a 2 hour and 20 minute film, tops.
      I hope Snyder learned his lesson and didn't fill the movie with a ton of unnecessary and ultimately, bloated subplots just to explain things that could've been explained in 5 minutes. If that's the case (which I doubt, tbh), a 2 hour JL film is possible. Though still, with this movie introducing Flash, Aquaman AND Cyborg, they really ought to take their time with this. 2h 30 would be my perfect runtime. Although, it's really all about pacing and editing. If they succeed in those departments, the movie could be 1h 30 long and it would be fine, really.

      I don't want it to be gone, but the funeral scene from the theatrical cut was better, because it didn't drag on for so long. There are lots of shots or quick scenes from the UC that just didn't "need" to be there. Those really are the only scenes in the entire film you could easily take away without actually lowering the overall quality of the film. You simply can't say the same thing about the cut Africa scenes, the cut capital scene, the cut prison scenes, etc. All of those scenes were actually integral to the plot. While the extra funeral shots, most of them really didn't add anything to the plot. It dragged.

i am going to admit I am very concerned about the runtime. WHy on earth would solo movies like moS and WW be longer than JL? And as much as I like and support Snyder, I am just not sure if I have faith that he is competent enough to pull this off with just a two hour runtime. They have a lot to work with here

  Wow, dude where do you get that. Figure of speech. I believe you must be following how screwed up The Flash has been. Seems Shazam is having issues too. From what I have been reading here on this site, thing are moving slow with some issues on Shazam. Comments are based on what's posted here, so thats what I am basing my "knowledge" on.

    You are speculating incorrectly...shazam has been quietly movung forward...we just got an update directly from the man himself, on top of which audition tapes have been released, so casting news should be upcoming before the year is over...please explain these "issues"

    My only wish...zack and wilkerson designed their costumes..hope the best for the serious...it might go to Cena the role of Shazam..the look he has it..its the acting that is concerning..

      I know. As much as I don't like cena the more I can see him being Shazam weirdly. The fact that it is a dual role works in his favor... but DC has been amazing in casting so far so I'm honestly not concerned and I have faith that whoever they cast will do the role justice

I think they'll push it back if they intend to make a quality movie... if they shoot as planned Captain Marvel in February we can expect them to shoot for at least for 5-6 momth and then go full post-production (VFX, sound effects, sound mixing, music, etc.) and reshoot (as usual for this type of big budget production...) I highly doubt they'll keep april 2019 official date, since Captain Marvel/Shazzam! is the same caliber as MoS it's an heavy CGI movie it'll require at least on year and a half to be done properly... I think they'll move the release date around summer-fall 2019.

Also we still have no news for Reeves Batman he may be working on the script, but I don't see when they're going to release it... maybe if Wonderwoman get pushed for 2020 (since there's a Star Wars that year...) they'll switch date between WW december 2019 and Batman...

That's a very generous amount of time. Aquaman, which'll probably be the most VFX heavy movie from the DCEU, is barely getting that amount of time. It shouldn't need that much time.

  Actually it depend of two factors : 1the company involved in a project of that size and 2/ the amount of people committed to the project itself.
  If they have 800 people working for 1 year with the latest technologies yes it might work... and we should add 800 people supervised by competent VFX/CGI supervisor of course! But if they have less people and a vast number of complex shot to finish I'm not sure about the quality of the film at the end...
  Personnaly I strongly believe a movie of this scale need to be released around summer or fall 2019 but hey it's my opinion, it's WB's property, their money, their team so we'll see how it'll turn lol

I know it is impossible, but I wish they stopped calling him Shazam. Billy Batson was Captain Marvel 50 years before Carol Danvers . It is absurd that Marvel Comics got the rights to that name.

    I would be inclined to agree except for the fact Alfred nods towards whoever he is speaking to, when he says the word "hope". It could be massive misdirection or it could be Super Girl not Superman. I really hope its not Super Girl though.

WB AND DC have no idea what they're doing. Where's Man of Steel 2? If Justice League gets less than 60 percent on rotten tomatoes and/or makes less than 1 billion dollars at the box office, they won't make Justice League 2. Dear Lord..... WHAT COWARDS! That includes Johns and Berg. Snyder is done with DC. I hope he moves on and makes a good, dramatic film to shut everyone up. I am with you Mr. Snyder.
