on Jared Leto loves Suicide Squad 2's director, but isn't sure when he'll play The Joker again

Collider caught up with Jared Leto, who is promoting his new movie Blade Runner 2049. Leto was asked about Gavin O'Connor directing Suicide Squad 2, and if he was going to play The Joker in that movie or the Joker/Harley Quinn movie next year. It sounds like a decision hasn't been made yet.

"A lot of moving parts, we’ll see what happens," Leto replied. "I think Gavin is incredibly talented, he seems to be the perfect director for Suicide Squad 2. I think he’s a really gifted filmmaker and I really love his work."

Hopefully we see Jared Leto as The Joker again in Suicide Squad 2, and I'm sure Leto would love that as well since he's a big fan of director Gavin O’Connor. Rumors seem to suggest the Joker/Harley Quinn movie will come after Suicide Squad 2 but as Leto said himself, there are a lot of moving parts and a final decision on that may not have been made yet.

What movie would you like to see Jared Leto's Joker appear in next? Let me know in the comments below.

Looking forward to checking out Blade Runner 2049. Well, seeing Leto's Joker in SS2 makes sense, but it somewhat feels like he's being left in limbo as far as WB/DC wanting him to continue as Joker or be recast. Hard to say what's best for the film. Continuity or a complete change... Not his fault he was given a gangster Joker to play but it could be his downfall as the Clown Prince.

The fancast vote is certainly strong online with everyone mentioning the usual suspects, Willem Dafoe, Bill Skarsgard, Crispin Glover, etc. so I don't know... it feels about 50/50 to me whether or not he'll actually stay or go. If he goes, I personally like the idea of Alexander Skarsgard bringing back a more traditional Joker and at his height, he fits more of the bill that Joker does in comics at 6'5". Yes, I do consider height a factor for my Joker. Not just for canon sake but also for Batfleck's sake at 6'4". I like the idea of someone standing eye-to-eye with that beast.

I got a feeling if Leo DiCaprio becomes the Joker we won't see Jared Leto's version any more. It would be kind of cool, I mean him and Robbie worked together before Wolf on Wall street. Even if she was in a Joker origin movie, that would be cool.

Recast the Joker with someone like James McAvoy or Jake Gyllenhaal or even Edward Norton and come up with a decent script next time. Tired of this sexy, cat purring Joker look, guy seriously needs a solid suit of some kind. The Joker's an organized intelligent character with an anti-personality disorder with a bit of narcissism, but he's not a psychopath. Not to mention they totally ruined the profiling scene with Harley. Animated series was way better and more believable.

no, don't recast him. and the joker is most definitely a psychopath.

Psychopaths are never flamboyant. They're calm, collected, and blend in well with people. That's why people are always surprised when they're caught. Plus they've already done a special on the psychology of comic book characters. Go check it out.

I would recast Leto. He was AWFUL. Joker's a psychopath, but Jared Leto's wasn't psychotic at all. Its just a guy with stupid tattoos trying way too hard to think he's "crazy" and looks like a Die Antwood fan.

        1. Human target Avatar

I wouldn't. He was far from awful and has the potential to be one of the greatest. His joker truly was psychotic. I don't see how the tattoos are stupid or how he was trying too hard. Die antwoord look nothing like him. They are completely different.

He was fucking awful and easily the worst Joker in live action however though i don't think the actual film helped, i would like to see him have a 2nd chance and try to do a different take as the Joker in a Batman film though as the main villain (Joker after all does have these Rebirths in the comics what Grant Morrison loves doing).

    1. mov Avatar
      mov

In my opinion, he was one of the most screwed up versions. It is sad that they chose irrelevant scenes that were cut so terribly in order to become fast loose scenes with no purpose for the story or characters.

      1. Hunter Zolomon Avatar
        Hunter Zolomon

The only part where i actually saw what he could have been was when he had the machine gun was firing at the Squad laughing like hell, for that 5 secs we had The Joker. Despite my hate for the perfermance i would love to see all the cut stuff as yeah i agree i think his best stuff is the stuff what was cut, i get the sense that the scene where he hits Harleen was pretty intense but sadly i doubt we will ever see that scene.

        1. mov Avatar
          mov

Yah, that 5-second helicopter scene was the only time we saw the Joker doing something... Even laughter made sense for the first time because we realized why he was laughing. In the other scenes, I never understood why he was laughing because he was cut.

For me, nothing justifies the cut and the terrible editing of important scenes for the characters and the story as the scenes in Arkum where the transformation process of the Harley Quinzel in Harley Quinn is shown. Instead, they put irrelevant scenes like the nightclub scene or the knife circle scene. In addition, these scenes were the height of the bad editing. The terrible cut that displayed the climax of the scene that showed the Joker killing Monster T, demonstrate me that the editing was made to spoil the impact of the scene in the spectator.

I wish I had seen the real scene when he argues and shoots Harley out of the helicopter and when he returns to attack the squad.

This part of the story has completely changed and we will probably never see it, but there was no reason to not put the complete scenes passed in Arkum in the theatrical film , not even in the extended version. Instead, they put that chase scene that shows more of the stunt of the actress than the interaction with the Joker. That scene created even more confusion because it ends with him sending her away and therefore I didn't understand what happened for him to change his mind and take her to the Ace chemical factory.
One of the biggest problem of this Joker is that his scenes don't have a conducting line.

For me, nothing justifies the choices that were done. The editing was made to screw up these scenes.

Blade Runner 2 is also the best film of the year and may apparently loose tens of millions as WB´s decision to invest 150 mil in a long dead genre proved the mistake many recognized it to be. A shame.

Why would Leto also know anything about Squad 2. Joker isn´t historically part of that franchise. Besides NDAs and all that stuff.

Thing is with Blade Runner is that the first flopped and only after some time got CULT fame with Sci-Fi and film fans, but thats the keyword its a CULT film and spending 150 million+ plus on a R-Rated slow paced sequel to a flop what only after some time got cult fame is a pretty stupid move. Yes the film is incredible no doubt and one of my favorites this year but its very niche and something average moviegoars just don't watch.

That's the quote and somehow that gets the title "Jared Leto loves Suicide Squad 2s director but isn't sure when he'll play the Joker again" He doesn't say anything about the Joker character or when he will play it again all he says is he loves the Suicide Squad 2s director nothing more.

Do you know if you’re doing Suicide Squad 2, or like a Harley/Joker movie next year? Is that definitely coming up?” Read carefully. Then Leto talked about not being sure because of moving parts.

There isn't a cut with all Joker's scenes obviously ( no film has all the scenes that are shot), but there were cuts with much more scenes than the general public saw.

I think that most scenes in the trailers were intended to be in the film. Why would they put them in the trailers? It wasn't just one or two scenes that were cut or changed, it the majority of the scenes that were in the trailers.

Besides, I know because I made contact with a few people who watched the test screenings that said that they watched much more Joker on that cut. I'm going to introduce the link of one person who put this online.

He said that the cut of the Joker stuff made his character more pointless and that the changes were just ...odd ( I guess he also wanted to say very bad choices). He thinks that the changes were made to put Will Smith Character - Deadshot- more in the front.

He also loved the version he saw earlier but not so much of the theatrical version.

Apparently, there were more scenes of the batman too, according to this guy.

I believe in him! Why wouldn't I? He tweeted before the release of the film.

I believe I remember reading about multiple cuts that were used with test audiences - some from Warner that were based on the trailer, some based on Ayer’s original darker vision, some mixes of the two, etc. I bet Ayer’s darker one was probably better in some ways, especially regarding the Joker.

          11. mov Avatar
            movreplying to NinjaGamer13

So if test audiences saw a cut with more Joker' scenes that means that Ayer lied about that. He affirms that the theatrical version was his cut, but the evidence says otherwise.

What this guy saw, probably, was the blend between David Ayer's cut and the studio's cut.

I talked with a person who saw one of the first test screenings and she said the Joker was a major character in the story. That person said that the Joker had a brutal confrontation with the squad and that the shot we saw in the trailer was part of that scene of confrontation.

So many lies and deception surround this movie. Well, all the marketing campaign was a big lie to begin with.

According to this viewer, the cuts had the purpose to make his character completely pointless to the story. Well, I could realize the obvious without seeing another cut.

          12. NinjaGamer13 Avatar
            NinjaGamer13replying to mov

Well I don’t think Ayer is lying. I doubt ANY cut kept EVERY Joker scene. And when he said the theatrical cut was his movie, I think was just standing by it, showing his support. Perhaps it aligned with his taste almost as much as other versions did to the point where he was comfortable saying that.

          13. mov Avatar

(And no, there isn’t a secret edit of the film with a bunch of Joker scenes hidden in a salt mine somewhere.) - David Ayer.

Well, there isn't a cut a with all Joker scenes obviously ( no film has all scenes), but there is definitely different cuts with a bunch of scenes that we didn't see in the theatrical version.

If we want to play with words, we can say that he didn't lie because those cuts aren't hidden in a salt mine somewhere.

I really think that Ayer didn't have a choice. If he turned against the studio, that would wreck the reception of the film ( or what was left of it) and his credibility among Hollywood studios because he turned against to the hand who fed him.

I completely understand him, because I also had to stand by with the decisions of the direction of the institution that I worked with, even if I strongly disagree. Sometimes we are caught with one's back against the wall.

Not just a presence but with complete scenes instead of loose and irrelavent scenes for the storyline and the character Arc. For example, the complete scenes at Arkham asylum and a REAL dialogue between the Joker and Harley. .

Scenes with a slower pace and without the jumping frames and filters distorting the images.

I think that his scenes were cut in a very harsh way. I think that there was never the intent to put the Joker in a Suicide squad 2. If there was that intend, his scenes wouldn't have been cut in that manner.
Maybe a film about the Joker and Harley, but never in suicide squad 2. I really don't know how the marketing will be done for the next film because all the marketing of the first one was based on Jared Leto's Joker and was all a hoax.

It's too early to know whether the joker will appear in his films. Since he's said he wants to focus on the world's greatest detective angle, maybe he'll revisit some of the really old comics and resurrect some different villains...

I was talking about the Joker from the real world - Donald Trump. He is definitely the best Joker of all time.

For me, the most important thing is the character arc, so nothing justifies the choices they made. Nothing justifies cutting important scenes for the arc of the characters like showing more of the process of transformation of Harley Quinzel into Harley Quinn. Introducing irrelevant scenes only undermine the pace of the film and add nothing to the characters.

The nightclub scene, the knife circle or the scene of guard Griggs weren't doing anything there, besides clutter the pacing. Those scenes surely had a purpose in the original script, but that purpose was gone with the changes they did in post-production with the reshoots.

" I can't wait to show you my toys " was in the most trailers but was not in the final cut. Why introduce an irrelevant and very short scene which the part of the scene that was showed in most trailers wasn't even there? Better cut the whole scene, I guess.

In addition, besides those scenes were completely irrelevant, those scenes were also the height of the bad editing and that for me is so obvious with the nightclub scene, especially the way they edited the climax of that scene- the kill of the monster T.

No editor, no matter how inexperienced could do such a bad job.

I would never edit that way unless I wanted to disconnect the public from those scenes.

            movreplying to mov

Well, I felt cheated when I realized that the shots I loved from the trailers were cut and changed for worst versions.

Many people only started giving this Joker a chance after hating the tattoos when they saw his shots on the trailers.

That's why I think what was done in the edit has no excuse. Why change all shots that were already showed and approved by the public?

Weren't they happy in cutting completely the majority of the fantastic shots they showed on trailers and promo pics? Why change for worst versions the only two scenes that remained?

Changing that shots for worst versions was a very disappointing to the fans who loved what they saw. To make this matter worse, the cut killed scenes super relevant to the characters arc and put a set of loose and irrelevant shots scattered across the film without a guideline.

I really think that the conduct of WB was deceptive and low.

Well, What was in the trailers was better for sure and I don't understand why they cut it. No editor would cut any scene the way his scenes were cut. Every time he is about to do something his scenes are cut or distorted like when he killed monster T. That was the climax of the scene and there is no excuse why they cut that scene the way they did.

Instead of showing important scenes with Harley and her backstory ( scenes at Arkum) they chose to put completely irrelevant and short scenes as the club scene and the knife circle...
The Joker should be there at least showing how Harleen Quinzel became Harley Quinn, but not even that he was allowed to be.

For me, it is easy to see how hideous Joker's scenes were edited. Cutting relevant scenes for the character arc and introducing scenes completely pointless for the story of the characters. Screwing up the climax of scenes like the kill of monster T.

His scenes were too short and too fast, full of cuts and weird filters. Above all, there was not a good driving line between the scenes because parts of the scenes were missing.

Joker he talked like in Suicide Squad may not work. I know he's a very talented actor but it's a huge ego you're dealing with here too. I've seen his interviews and I've never seen him say he did a great job. What he said was that most of his scenes were cut.

I honestly do not understand the choices they made in the movie. As an editor myself, for me, those scenes don't make sense. Most were loose fast scenes with no importance whatsoever to the story. Instead of putting important scenes like those that explain Harley Quinzel transformation in Harley Quinn, they put irrelevant scenes like the nightclub scene and the Griggs guard scene. In fact, they put the scene of the guard but did not even put "I can't wait to show my toys".
Most of the scenes were cut or changed from the trailers including the ones that were approved by the public like the scene of the first trailer where he gives that fantastic Joker smile. I really don't understand why any editor would choose a worst version of the same shot, especially if was already showed and approved by the public.

The majority of marketing was done using his character. He had more covers of the Empire magazine than anyone from the cast. Many promo photos appeared including one where he was threatening Harley on the helicopter scene. For me, that was a dishonest marketing from the studio because showed awesome things but then decided to cut.

I think the actor was very understanding and professional.I don't know if I would have been that understanding. No big EGO at all. I think it is the opposite.

I agree. Leto couldn’t accomplish what Nicholson and Ledger accomplished with their portrayal of Joker. Although Nicholson’s and Ledger’s portrayal were drastically different, when I watch them, I don’t see Nicholson or Ledger, all I see is Joker. Leto, on the other hand, looked like a guy dressed like a member of the Mexican mafia with green hair and a platinum grill with movements and mannerisms that were nothing less than cringing. “Hunka, hunka.”

i just simply can't reach a full consensus on him as of now and I see no reason he shouldnt be able to pull off a tremendous joker at the moment. David Ayer just wasn't the right person to direct this character in my opinion. I still don't know why people think he was supposed to be able to make a significant impression with just a few minutes of screen time(and for the record I thought he was pretty decent at times). But most of what he had to go just wasn't very good. And they DID remove quite a bit of fottage(you don't even have to take Leto's word for it. Just watch the trailers and BTS videos). Right now it is my belief that under MAtt Reeves he will be able to construct a considerably stronger performance(I also can't really see Reeves wanting to work this "gangsta" joker tbh. I really would not be surprised if they end up retconning certain aspects of Leto's portrayal.).

I mean everything I saw in the trailers got me hyped for him. Have you ever seen a video by Bobby Burns on why he thinks Leto's joker is salvageable? If not I definitely recommend as I think he makes good points

well the big point he makes is how a lot of the editing screwed up what could ahve been some intense moments. He actually edits one of the joker scenes in TDK like the way A lot of Leto's scenes were edited(with the weird colors and spastic jumps and what not) and the scene had a completely different feel and was not nearly as effective.

Not even someone very inexperienced would do what was done to that film.

The jumping frames, image distortion with filters, extremely fast shots, loose scenes with no guideline and connection between them, insertion of irrelevant scenes instead of scenes important for the development of the characters arc.

"The intent there would be to put the film's best foot forward, to effectively utilize each role."

I compare it to the politics, just because the politicians are there to serves the people's interest us with the best, that doesn't mean they will do that.

If they wanted to make the best they wouldn't have made the choices that I described above. I already wrote many times here why I consider the final cut of this film outrageous.

Jared was a supporting character at best, Heath was the main villain of the piece.

I think the Joker incarnates the trickster's spirit which "exhibits a great degree of intellect or secret knowledge and uses it to play tricks or otherwise disobey normal rules and conventional behavior".

I think that this spirit or emanation is reflecting our society which in my view is the set of people's actions but also the energy of our words and thoughts pattern.

Usually, the trickster is there to make a change in society and he is a wake-up call that something needs change.

For me, the Heath Ledger was more the reincarnation of other tricksters than the Joker of the comics. I have seen many similarities with Charles Manson, for example.

We have become a very hypocritical society just like Heath Ledger's Joker said and Manson himself also said the same.

We spend more time judging than helping, and that is what underlies our destruction.

In this moment I see Donald Trump as the reincarnation of the spirit of the Trickster . He is here to destroy and to bring chaos to a society that has been ill for a very long time.

Superman's suit is literally an invincible alien material. There was no possible in-continuity way his suit could have changed, but it did. Tattoos are equally representational - especially the annoying little ones all over his face, which are tiny anyway so it's no biggie. They can go away with no explanation and most people won't notice, same as the Superman suit. Oh, and the grill, too, yes please! Then maybe we can understand half of what he says! xD

I don’t think average people would notice removing face tattoos and the grill. And those of us who will, will only be relieved. It’s no more offensive canonically than Superman’s suit change - in fact less, because tattoos are actually removable.

Yet casting an entirely different actor isn’t? LOL Superman’s suit is impossible to change, yet changed. Tattoos are less a part of the character than the actual face portraying it, yet actors change. Let’s be reasonable here.

            NinjaGamer13replying to NinjaGamer13

I really think it’s not possible to make a real judgment on his performance from what was in SS.

But Superman’s suit is canonically impossible to change, whereas tattoos are not. Especially if they’re just the little face ones, which actually aren’t any more noticeable than the details of Superman’s suit.

          7. NinjaGamer13 Avatar
            NinjaGamer13replying to NinjaGamer13

Brighter colors, more defined and pronounced S, fancy Kryptonian text swirled in the middle of the S, different detailing and texture throughout the suit, squared off and spread out ribbing and cuff designs, blue cuffs and ribbing instead of slate, squared off “belt” with an S in the “buckle” now, extra line at the top of the boots and narrower slit, smaller and slightly lower S-shield - all permanent fixtures of the suit, altered.
I can, if they heard people’s complaints. Why not? At least the face tattoos. ‘Cause those are the smallest. I’m not saying it will happen, just that it COULD, with the precedent that has been set with people’s suits.

          8. NinjaGamer13 Avatar
            NinjaGamer13replying to NinjaGamer13

That square “belt” and Kryptonian lettering thing in the S are pretty obvious to me when watching, no less so than “Damaged,” probably. And I think both can be largely ignored with the same level of ease/difficulty. So, especially considering it will have been years since the general audience saw this Joker (for a total of a few minutes in a probably forgettable movie for them), they could totally get away with it.
The fans would notice for sure, but we notice everything, so that goes without saying. But I think there’s a good chance the general audience wouldn’t.

Well, I evaluate the way his scenes were cut. I can only evaluate a performance in a scene and I don't think that the film showed a real scene with this Joker.
I need at least one complete scene without the absence of recording time and that has decent transitions between the frames.

If WB decides to restore and present the full scenes of Leto's Joker that were in the film, only then I can have a more realist perspective of what was done.

I liked the crazier and exuberant side of this version, but the scene that made me fell in love with this Joker was changed for a worst version in the final cut.

I absolutely loved the way Jared said " I gonna hurt you really really bad and then he made that fantastic joker smile. For me, that was the incarnation of the Joker and I can't understand why was changed if was showed and approved by the public in the trailers.

The same reason why all the other actors were cut out, including the main villain and her love story with Rick Flagg that was essential to the climax of the film.

I don't know why David Ayer wanted to make justice to the JOKER making him the main villain when the main villain June/Enchantress's was so screwed with no story and with scenes created with CGI. She supposed to be a very interesting villain with a very interesting relationship with the official leader of the Squad, but the scenes between the two were cut.

Instead of showing their love story, they decided to show their love story in a conversation between Deadshot and Rick Flag.I wonder if the love story was between these two and not with June Moon.
Apparently was all about showing Deadshot interacting with the other characters. No relevant story outside the Will Smith/Deadshot's circle survived. I wonder Why?
