on 'Flashpoint' script turned in to Warner Bros., director meetings still ongoing

Earlier this year we learned that King Arthur: Legend of the Sword writer Joby Harold was working on a page-one rewrite of The Flash movie, which was announced at Comic-Con as Flashpoint. After at least 9 months of work, it seems like Harold has something that he's proud .

Variety reporter Justin Kroll says that Harold turned in his Flashpoint script to Warner Bros. yesterday. Robert Zemeckis is still being considered to direct, though Kroll notes that Warner Bros. is still meeting with other directors and is in no rush to make any announcements.

If Flashpoint is anything like its comic book counterpart, it opens a whole bunch of possibilities in the DC Extended Universe, including the return of Gal Gadot's Wonder Woman.

The Joker script is also expected to be turned in to Warner Bros. this week.

I kinda hope they use Zemeckis, I think the BTTF style is perfect for a flash movie.

Just seems like WB's DC department is run by a bunch of Avi Arad's these days. If JL doesn't deliver, they're done. But instead of analyzing why the ratings of their movies are so mixed, they're just like "We need to plan for more because we need to sell more merchandise". You've got one hit so far WB, that's hardly anything to brag about. WW was good because you replaced Snyder with someone else and gave them full creative control. Nolan was successful because he had full creative control except for maybe certain parts of the 3rd like most studios do in the final movie of a franchise (Star Wars, Spider-Man, X-Men). Stop trying to keep pace with Marvel and do things at your own pace.

I mean... how much more wrong can someone get:

      One hit? Okay...

No one replaced Zack Snyder on Wonder Woman, to my knowledge, he was never up for anything but a story/producer role.

What more do they have to do to show you guys that they literally dont care what Marvel are doing. The backbone of DC's universe is different to Marvel's in tone, structure, how they choose what to develop next, the characters they're adapting and the directors making their movies... How many other ways can they be more different?

WB made more money in its first three shared universe movies than Marvel, so it is hardly a failure.

With the Trinity & the most popular comic book villain heavily marketed in a movie he's barely in, the big news would be if those movies didn't make more then a couple movies featuring B & C level characters.

      2. BugsMeany Avatar
        BugsMeany

Marvel built up its universe with solo films before bringing the characters together in movie #6. DC blew its wad by putting the Trinity in movie #2, and had to prop up movie #3 with a Batman cameo. (Inflation is also a factor.) I’m a DC fan but I cringe when people use that argument.

The MCU's 14th or so film

Spidey's first MCU film that fans were clamoring for ever since the debacle of TAS 2. This is basically what will happen if the X-Men or FF4 join the MCU.

And the film was heavily endorsed by RDJ. Yes Tony's role in the film may have been small, but he was heavily marketed in the film as if he had a major role. All of that was done to draw more viewers.

I think TDK is maybe a more generally polished and widely palatable film, but BvS resonates with me on such a grippingly personal and poetic level that I think I probably prefer it too. The story, acting, and music of both films just rock me though. I love that they're so intense. :)

I went to see BvS three times in theaters, and have watched it twice entirely on Blu-ray, but I watch a heavy amount of clips from it on a regular basis on YouTube too. haha

BvS is kind of like the DCEU's TDK to Man of Steel being DCEU's Batman Begins. You go from the heartfelt, passionate, flashback heavy origin to a chair-sinking thriller in the sequel.

For me, it's like... Batman v Superman, Batman Begins, The Dark Knight (tied with) Man of Steel. Top 4 DC, in that order. All tugging at each other's placement closely.

They all have an impact on me in some way - a way that I have yet to experience with Marvel's films for some reason.

Sorry, just had to chip that in after seeing your comment. BvS is just so rewatchable!

Yes but the thing is that in Man of Steel they told us that Superman is 33 years old so if they make Flashpoint in the 80s or the 90s he will be either a toddler or a little kid and I suspect that the movie of Aquaman is going to show us a normal aging Arthur Curry so a movie set in the 80s or 90s is unlikely.

I hope its a director who understands and can capture Barry's speed well. Snyder's version is just too messy and loud, when Barry moves it doesn't look like some destructive lightning force, i hate how even when he's in speed mode there's sparks and lightning shooting out of him. Really feels like another overdone depiction what Snyder does all the bloody time.

  11. Hunter Zolomon Avatar
    Hunter Zolomon

As much as i love Flashpoint and its Animated film (what in my opinion is better then the comic) i do think its way too soon and shouldn't be The Flash's first ever live action film. All they had to do was give us a standalone The Flash Vs The Rogues film with hints towards Thawne being the villain for the sequel what could have then set up finally a Flashpoint film for the 3rd film. I really wish DC would get that there's more to Barry Allen then just bloody Flashpoint as the show used it too soon and failed and now the DCEU is using it too soon.

I agree... there's just no way to follow up that storyline. It's his endgame. It's the Civil War to DC's Flash. The solo movies afterwards will feel insignificant in comparison.

    2. Kerk Lastnameless Avatar
      Kerk Lastnameless

I'm sorry, but Flashpoint is the most overrated of all DC comics and it makes no sense character-wise. Why do you all insist that it should be at the end of Flash's hero carrier? Because it deconstructs too much? Well, here's the deal -- if it's at the end of his carrier then he should KNOW BETTER than do such an idiotic thing, as Zoom rightfully calls him out on. If the repercussions of changing history were apparent to Zoom, they should have been apparent to Flash, otherwise he is a naive idiot who doesn't understand the speed force. It damages his character.

No, only way you can get away with such a premise is if it involves the young, naive and inexperienced Flash -- it HAS to happen in the beginning of his carrier, so he can learn not to fuck with time anymore. At least in that respect, the TV show got it right.

      1. Hunter Zolomon Avatar
        Hunter Zolomon

Because its too big of a story to be the first film and it works better for a Flash who has history with Thawne and knows very well what the wider DC universe is and the JL. I get that you say Barry should know better but if i remember right Barry does it without realizing it, he doesn't know he did it until Thawne reveals it near the end and thinks for most of the story it was Thawne who did it. As for being overrated well thats opinion, most Flash fans i've known in real life and the internet comics boards loved the story.

      2. Hunter Zolomon Avatar
        Hunter Zolomon

Yeah i just want a simple Flash Vs The Rogues film, that lot are unique and are fantastic characters. Seeing Flash vs Captain Cold, Captain Boomerang, Mirror Master, Golden Glider, Heat Wave and Weather Wizard would be amazing for his first film.

A script without a director to lead it? I don't think any director even wants to sign on without having complete control over the script. You hire a director to give your movie a vision. Right now, they force a vision unto possible directors. It just doesn't work that way, unless the script is flexible, which after reading this article, I severely doubt.

    1. Mark Avatar
      Mark

There are way more scripts floating around Hollywood than there are movies in production at any given moment, so it doesn't always work the other way. Plus, there's a good chance that WB has certain outcomes they want from this movie, both in terms of overall tone and in terms of the aftermath (if they use it to reset the DCEU). So this one might be more producer-driven than some of the others (e.g. The Batman).

True, but we’ve already seen the mess this creates specifically for the DCEU with films like the flash and Batman both having to go through multiple directors and scripts. I’m all for taking your time, but it seems redundant to write the script and then hire a director who trashes it anyways. The DCEU is different than all other films. They're not going to have Wonder Woman behead Mera. They're just not. The market for the animated movies is TINY in comparison to the mass market DCEU. WB isn't going to have their crown jewel(debatable) in Wonder Woman, this shining example of heroism and icon for all these women and girls, get into a catfight with Mera and cut off her head. They're just not.

They'll probably show Flashpoint Diana as this slightly cynical and militaristic general of the Amazons but the war against Atlantis won't be anywhere near as explicit as it is in the comics or the cartoon. It can still be great, though.

Yup. Normies/casual fans don't know anything about comic geek logic, taking into account alternate timelines or whatever. They have a very short memory. For instance, Batman killed people in every movie prior to the Nolan ones and still killed by way of not saving Liam Neeson in Begins, but normies were still confused as to why he killed in BvS.

Good, bad or indifferent, fans are going to have to understand that WB is going to start cradling the DC properties like they're fine china. They can't be too risky with them. Some characters they can, like Harley or the Joker and darker heroes, but not with the shining stars like Supes/Bats/WW.

Flashpoint WW will be a bit more militaristic and less lovable; she'll be more stern and firm but not the kind of woman who bangs Atlantean kings and then murders their wives.

Thousands died because it was the World Engine that killed those people and it wasn't easy stopping it since simply bombing it wasn't an option. A few more (maybe some hundreds) died during the battle between Superman and Zod and that's only because it was Zod's intention to take as many of these humans that Kal has adopted as he could. Taking him into space didn't work so I don't know what people mean by taking him 'away'. Kal did the best he could being the greenhorn that he was.
What was heroic about him after the Ground Zero Event is every single instance of heroics leading up to the Doomsday battle. There were newspaper snippets of this all over Wallace's wall—shifting tectonic plates saves thousands of people. There was an actual montage of him saving people but not actually one of him saving a cat out of a tree so I guess he wasn't all that heroic at all.

Kal didn't train his entire life for war and to kill 'influenced' soldiers while preaching love after the fact.
Also, the sniper wasn't a fellow-Themysciran like Zod was a fellow-Kryptonian to Kal so it's a weak-ass analogy to begin with.

I don't approve of the idea of Sups killing. WW is a different character in a different time. But he could have simply put his hand over Zod's eyes. More importantly, the battle was filmed in such a way that I did not see much effort on his part to pull Zod out of the city. As hamfisted as it was in BvS, with all the unnecessary comments from the military personnel, at least we could clearly see him taking Dooms into the outer space.

It was obvious the heat vision hurts Kryptonians.
Kal had used it on Faora's armored hand and she had to pull it away and you think Kal could've simply used his (bare) hands? https://uploads.disquscdn.c... https://uploads.disquscdn.c...

Oh, you couldn't clearly see Kal and Zod in space? Lack of attention, perhaps?
Here's Zod refusing to play in space and zapping Supes right back into Metropolis while destroying a Wayne satellite in the process:
            https://uploads.disquscdn.c...
            https://uploads.disquscdn.c...
He caused collateral damage in space so one has to have brain damage to think taking him to a fucking desert would've made any difference, as if Zod would let a farm-boy to take him places!

Pay some more attention and you'd know Supesb had the idea to take Doomsday to space from Zod.

You're the one that made the stupid comment so don't start crying when I call you stupid for it. Now I know just how seriously I need to take whatever you say. 😂

No, me and great many others in the audience could NOT clearly see Sups trying to pull Zod out of the city. A few seconds of battle in the orbit is nowhere near enough. It's because of how it was filmed. In no shot did we see Sups's face when he would witness destruction and say in his mind, "Damn, I gotta get him out of here!" Nowhere. Not in his actions, not in his expressions. So they compensated for that with the thickly layered scene from BvS, where Snyder decided to add random military people talking over the scene, to make sure that the stupid audience really gets it this time.

As to how much it would hurt -- yeah, I'd expect Sups to sacrifice his entire arm before he kills or lets others be killed.

Oh no, I've been called worse than "stupid." Don't think for a sec that some random asshole on the internet like you can get to me. What matters tho is that at the end of the day, the general audience is on my side -- the movie was heavily criticized for Zod's death and for the reckless destruction and killing of people, and this Superman has been heavily mocked for being brooding and uninspiring, in large part thanks to the climax.

A few seconds in space where Zod took Superman right back into Metropolis, you mean? You made it sound like they went to space for fun, pardon me.

Oh, yes, the Control Room with direct access to the POTUS is random military people. Why didn't I think of that!

I guess he could've melted both his arms and then try to stop Zod by hopping on top of him with his legs. That'd be so heroic!

Hey, random asshole on the internet, I've called you stupid because of your stupid comment. In other words, I have no reason to call you worse and judging from this convo so far you likely deserved whatever the hell you were called. You sit there talking without a shred of insight or viewer-participation like that, you come off as profoundly stupid. 🤷‍♂️

You can spin it all you want - Zod took him back, and Zod swore to destroy humanity, and blah blah blah.. At the end of the day the audience did not see Sups do enough to save the city. No, it was not clear in the battle. In BvS, it was, as we saw the actual attempt. Yeah sure, Zod went back, so what? Pull him again. And again. And again. Find a way. That's what the audience expects from Sups.

They are random to the audience. Their sole purpose in the movie is to tell the audience, "Yes, Sups is doing his best to save us," when it's not needed -- it can be clearly seen in the scene itself.

Why did you try to explain why you call me stupid? I said, I don't care. Why would I need to hear your reasons? Are you that self-conscious that you need to explain yourself to a random asshole on the internet? You're pathetic.

She didn't come back when Hitler had gassed millions of innocent people—even with Steve Trevor having died in a gas hazard, lol. The Nazis were (not monster enough?) threatening to wipe out an entire race but we know WW2 will be set during the Cold War.
She came back in BvS because she was glued to the TV the whole time and saw Superman giving his everything to save innocent people. Her first instinct after finding out trouble was brewing in the city was to get the hell out of there. She wasn't scheduled to leave because she hadn't yet recovered the glass-plate she came for. She made a last-minute decision to step in because she was inspired, in one way or another, by Superman.

Wonder Woman was only created because Charles Moulton wanted a new kind of superhero (Superman) who was instead made into a woman as suggested by his wife. DC Films's Wonder Woman being inspired by Superman would reflect this and not destroy anything about her no matter how much you think that'd be the case.

Failed Superman experiment? If you actually understood Flashpoint that's exactly the point the arc is trying to make. A world without Superman is a world without Hope.

The ending of WW shows that she had indeed been away for a 100 years. That's what that ending shot with her responding to an emergency signfies.
WW2 will be nothing like part 1. Diana will obviously be forced into whatever transpires during the Cold-War story they're going for. It's stupid to think she's still going to be naïve after living more than 6 decades in the man's world. She did walk away from mankind but they glazed over it in the film and skipped to her restored faith in humanity—after Superman's sacrifice she remembered amother man who'd sacrificed himself to save the world, Steve Trevor, while also recalling how she got started. That is part 1 in a nutshell. There's nothing there to prove she didn't walk away from mankind.
It's stupid to think Diana will be putting on the armor and going to kick some commie ass for America in part 2. 😑

The supposedly checked-out Diana got off the plane and put on the armor—evidently she kept it handy—to help kick some Kryptonian monster ass for Metropolis. Even though someone far, far stronger than her was already on the scene. That person didn’t do anything for 100 years?

As Kerk said, it’s a retarded line that ruins her character.

WW made more money for WB though because BvS cost more to make with very costly marketing. WW is the character in DC film what everyone and their grandma loves right now, WW 2 could very well top a billion and you can bet WB will focus more on WW leading up to JL (noticed how the last trailer opened with her kicking ass) then anyone else. Also it was WW people loved most in BvS, Affleck outside of comic book fans or DCEU fanboys wasn't actually talked about or cared about that much, my Dad watched BvS who didn't like it and when asked what did you like he said like most people i know when asked was Wonder Woman. WW is the one thing what people want more off right now not Batman.

Definitely. Especially if the movie takes place closer to modern day(I've heard 80s Cold War-era which would be awesome) it'd be even more relatable for the audience.

Wonder Woman 2 could definitely go above 1 billion if they make it in modern times and have more action, specifically more lasso fights. That will boost their stock in foreign markets, where she still did amazing with $400M on her debut, in spite of her weak-to-nonexistent brand recognition (Outside of North America). We all remember how Iron-Man 3 exploded commercially.

I think Wonder Woman to WW2 will experience similar growth to Captain America and the Nolan Batman movies. Cap 1 actually did REALLY low business, around $400m worldwide, but Winter Soldier did around double that. Batman Begins did between $3-400m and TDK did over a billion.

          4. Bartholomew Hunt Avatar
            Bartholomew Huntreplying to nipple_pinchy

TDK's revenue and recognition is definitely askew though, due to the death of Ledger. It put a lot of butts in theater seats. Wonder Woman was a very good movie, but it was lacking in action. They should have awesome fight scenes tightly woven into the narrative. It they can pull it off, and maybe get a big-named Chinese actor co-starring, they might even crack the 1.5 billion. Really, the sky is the limit. At the moment, Gal can do no wrong.

I hope they get a cinematographer that has a bit of a more exciting visual style. WW was great but a lot of the cinematography wasn't on the level of the other DCEU films.

            Bartholomew Huntreplying to nipple_pinchy

Totally agree. And they should definitely chill with the slow-mo. It's just a lazy, cheap way to make the fights look better. They should have serious choreography. Let Gal really work for it. And also much better CGI. Some parts were dodgy to say the least. They're looking at $200M-230M budget plus another 200 for marketing, which will make it more expensive, but the returns can be outrageous. Not to mention what it will do the DCEU draw in general.

Exactly. You can't have little girls dressing up as WW after the first movie's rendition and then have her banging Aquaman in her third appearance in the DCEU and then have her decapitate Aquaman's wife. Kids will be crying in the theater. lol

The people who watch the animated movies, ironically enough, are not kids. They're nerds and geeks like us in their 20s-40s. The people seeing the movies runs the gamut from kids to the elderly so unfortunately, WB can't and won't be that close to the source material.

Actaully its when they try to stick to the comics problems arise. Taking the idea is fine but taking everything is not, Winter Soldier and Civil War took the ideas but done their own thing and for that their better films (despite what the minority internet thinks Civil War is fantastic what made a fuck ton of money, got fantastic reviews with audiences loving it as well). Same with Batman Begins, Nolan took the idea of Year One but done his own thing and Begins was better for it, same with Logan what took the idea of Old Man Logan but again done its own thing and for that we ended up with the best comic book film since The Dark Knight.

As for the Animated films well they are made for a certain group of people and are pretty cheap and easy to make so they can stay closely to the comics, no way is WB making a 200 million R-Rated 90% true to comics Flashpoint film because that will fail.
