Joss Whedon officially gets 'Justice League' writer credit

Warner Bros. just sent out their 2017 Fall Movie Preview to the press, and included were updated credits for Justice League.

Joss Whedon was originally brought on to write some new scenes for the movie, before stepping into the director's chair as well after Zack Snyder had to step down. Whedon did enough work on the script to earn himself credit, Warner Bros. lists the screenplay by "Chris Terrio and Joss Whedon".

    I don't know where the "cliffhanger" ending rumor started. No one at WB ever said the original plan was to end JL1 that way. Bloggers came up with that.
    What Snyder had designed was an arc. JL1 introduces the characters, gets the league together, resurrects Superman, they fight Steppenwolf and Parademons, defeat them, and that sets the stage for Darkseid, à-la Thanos at the end of Age of Ultron, to "do it himself" in JL2. Therefore, you can't say AoU ended in a cliffhanger. The MCU will have 7 movies between Thanos deciding to take matters into his own hands, and Infinity War.
    Same for DCEU. After JL1, they always intended to continue the story of the individual heroes, up until the point Darkseid, seeing that his best general couldn't defeat the League. re-launches a new invasion himself.

      Cliffhanger was part of the original plan i believe it was Charles Roven who first spoke of it or it was from someone else from the set visits but it was at least a year ago. There's a Forbes article about the whole thing it was brought up when the bloggers were stating the cliffhanger just went away when in fact it was gone from last year. My point was more that this Justice League movie probably changed between what happened with BvS then SS then them bringing in Geoff Johns and so on I just can't picture this movie behind the old ideas when they first started doing the universe.

      How can people not pick up on it? It's not nearly smart enough to be misunderstood, unless whoever didn't understand it has an IQ below 70. The movie goes out of it's way to show the Wayne murders again with his father saying "martha". That's how much "hand holding" the scene has.

Oh yeah, Chris Terrio! I remember him! LOL He's an example of how risky these polarizing comic book movies can be. Careers are potentially on the line. I'm interested to see if he hits on anything big, post-DCEU. After re-watching Avengers: Age of Ultron, I do think Whedon overdid it with the cheesy humor. And the repeat of the "so we just disappear?" line, followed by an abrupt cut to the next scene, was a lazy and terrible way to write a superhero romance. But I'm VERY glad that Whedon was brought in to help Justice League.

Zack has proven himself to be a garbage director and Joss has directed the highest grossing superhero movies which received critical praise and owned the box office.So, yeah if jl turn out to be good then it is due to Joss.And, If it sucks it is cause Zack handled majority of the movie.

This is a little different. Snyder didn't leave or get kicked out. He had to leave for post production due to a family tragedy...which should never happen to anyone. But he left during post production, and that's why this is different.
Zack finished 100% of principal photography before he stepped down. Meaning, the movie was finished and he gets full director's credit. Joss came in to finish up post production and shoot additional scenes that Snyder himself directed and gave Joss guidelines on how to do. Which is why Joss is getting screenplay co-writers credit rather than director's credit since Snyder still directed those scenes while Joss just helped write them and shot them under Zack's vision.

    from my film making experience, everything gets story boarded first. not everything story boarded gets used, and when there are reshoots that gets story boarded too. a blueprint is made and followed even if the director (original or not) is not on the scene and his co-director or assistant is in charge. they go through how they planned to shoot the scenes and what reasons for it and such and when shooting day comes that's what they do. Granted some adjustments are made depending on what happens that day or an epiphany occurs but that's it. As for composer change, well Junkie already had another project to work on so he doesn't have time to sound test and make level changes with what he's given. I don't remember if they did that after the film is edited and full special effects is added or not but I know they do
    foley after the final cut and that takes forever, fun but forever.

      That being said his writer credit is deserved since he wrote the those scenes because Chris couldn't for some reason or another. And he was an excellent choice not because of his record which is meh for me. Except Firefly....god I loved that show, but mostly because he already has experience in superhero team films. He's done 2 so he knows what Zack means and what he looks for in a shot.

I did some digging, and according to Variety the prior screenplay credit went entirely to Chris Terrio (if anyone can find the original story and screenplay credits here at B-N I'd love to see the reference). I was interested in seeing if Whedon was just an addition or if anyone else got booted.

Never doubted it one bit. This is Zack's movie and story through and through, he directed and wrote it, and Joss getting Screenplay credit makes total logical sense since he wrote additional scenes with the reshoots, but they were all still directed and given to him by Snyder himself. Now maybe people can relax. Zack Snyder is the sole director and always has been. All these rumors with Zack being replaced and all that shit with Joss being director, blah blah. Eat shit haters.

    One thing you need to understand that a director only gets credit when he has done 50% of the movie.So, Just cause Joss didn't got the credit doesn't mean that he isn't the one who is handling reshoots that are going on for three months, Changed the composer, Ending and is handling post production.Also, He wrote reshoots scenes.

      You're a little confused. No one said he isn't handling the reshoots or writing those additional scenes. He did, that's why he's getting proper credit. But Zack Snyder finished 100% of principal photography before he stepped down. Which by DGA guidelines makes him the sole director and makes this his movie. But that's not the only reason. The other reason is because those reshoots didn't change Zack's role is because those reshoots were directly given under Zack's order and Joss was following his guidelines and direction. That's what you need to understand. Yes he wrote additional scenes and that's why he's getting screenplay credits, but that's it.
      The composer change isn't up to Zack or Joss. That's up to Warner Bros. That matter isn't related to either of them. The ending isn't changed and that's just more bullshit being spread. The reshoots and additional scenes did not include the ending. Once again, Snyder finished 100% principal photography before he left. Post production magically doesn't erase 100% of the entire movie Zack shot. The movie was finished before he left and that's why Zack is still the director. This is his movie, not Joss's.

      It's been reported by multiple sources over and over again that the primary reason it's taken 3 months is because of scheduling, with Henry working on MI6, Momoa on Aquaman and Ezra on Fantastic Beasts at the same time. Hence, it's been very difficult to work around their schedules especially with these actors working in different countries. If it wasn't for that the reshoots would have been completed a long time ago.

If only DGA rules allowed him to get a co-director credit which he clearly deserves.

Not sure I will be giving money to DC again anytime soon, so it's still a download at the moment, but if it is good I will at least pay to see The Batman.

On one hand I like Whedon's input. On the other hand, the amount of writers and producers on this project could be a bad sign. Typically the more people that have creative control on movies usually ends in a mess cause there's no one linear-direction.

What I like about this is I remember when the DCEU started I told my buddy how funny it was that the DCTVerse was starting the whole Multiple Earths thing. That they were planting those flags on tv and he said it would only be on TV, Then Supergirl came out with Superman and we started talking about how different he is from Man of Steel version. I pointed out that like my brother I agree with him he's the Superman I grew up with. But I also pointed out that like a lot of people he's a Superman who was already Superman. We grew up with him already figuring out his purpose, and already having those lines that do not cross. We are Supergirl, we are following him from his example and from what his experience taught him to teach us. We never really grew up with him, unless you count Smallville which was also pretty dark if you think about some of the things that went on in there. So this whole Elseworld thing doesn't surprise me and I wouldn't be surprised if some how some way they all come together. That being said we both agreed that seeing Clark go from a Man of Steel to Superman is pretty interesting. Funny note, some films and tv kind of point to Superman being experience and we follow Batman getting there and DCEU did it vice versa. Pretty awesome when you think about it.

That´s a substantial credit as there was a chance than he would only get the story credit, like Snydra.
Joss is a great writer first and foremost so this is all good news. No writing credit of any kind for Goeff though, despite his rewrite, hm. Mr. Snyder doesn´t have a producing credit either. Weird.

  He is one of my favorite writers and directors full stop. Dollhouse can suck it and the solid Much Ado About Nothing truly feels like it was shot over a weekend but everything else is top of the line genre fiction. Especially his X-men run. One of the greatest comics of al time.

    And if you are referring strictly to the script... Well, remove your biasing lenses and look how the writer of the script is Terrio as always has been, so anyone who was following the movie production knows Snyder didn't have enything to do with that, even though you want to remove that from him (!)
    Oh, and according to the DGA if someone directs the 50% of a movie gets a director credit. You say he has written 50% of the movie. If he has directed what he has written, where is his director credit?

If whedon is getting a writers credit on a second draft according to guild rules he is responsible for at least 50% of the screenplay. For the sake of argument let's say its first draft and whedon was there from day one. Guild rules say he is 33% of the story. At bare minimum jl is 45 minutes of pure whedon writing not to mention directing not to mention post "fine tuning"
      Sit down and stop embarrassing yourself. Of course the writer of the screenplay is more responsible for the story then the director, idiot. Lmao. Everyone knows that.

Actually all Whedon would have to do to get a writers credit is change a single scene thats significant to the story. Unlike the DGA the writers guild doesn't have the strictest guidelines regarding percentages (no matter what they say).

However since Snyder directed 100% of the principal photography, the DGA requires that any and all changes to the film be run through him. Unless he pulls a Garreth Edwards of course, and grabs his ankles :-P.

PS: This is precisely why K. Kennedy fired Lord and Miller when she did. 80% is not 100, and she knew they wouldn't play ball like Edwards.
