Matt Reeves clarifies comments: 'The Batman' is in the DC Extended Universe

Yesterday an interview with director Matt Reeves surfaced where he said that The Batman would be a "standalone" movie that "isn’t part of the extended universe". As you could imagine, it left fans scratching their heads. Thankfully the social media savvy director has taken to Twitter today to clear up his comments.

"Just to be clear: Of COURSE Batman will be part of the D.C. Universe," Reeves tweeted. He went on to say that what he meant was The Batman will just focus on Batman, it won't included cameos from other DC characters or service other stories. It's going to be a pure, standalone Batman movie.

Jeez, what'd I miss, guys...? ðŸ˜€

    I have feeling you're being sarcastic. But in case you're actually incapable of noticing, the reason why I said "The Batman movie is part of the DCEU slate" is because unless it is removed from the slate, it is a part of the DCEU. Based on that basic information alone, anyone who is being intellectually honest would make the same inference into Reeves' point, that he's clarifying right now.

      with a Joker origin story, Shazam, and a Ben Affleck script rejected, lot of doubts comes about what Reeves wants and what WB is offering, besides he made a statement saying it isnt part of DCEU, the only person uncapable of undertanding what that means is you and Reeves by saying such statement. Saying it isnt part means is a different universe. and lets not forget the confusion caused by Afflecks brother suggesting he wasnt going to be Batman anymore.

        The Batman movie was part of the DCEU slate at the time of all these events, including Reeves' initial comments. To be quite honest, it doesn't matter what he says it is or isn't a part of. It *is* a part of the DCEU. Until it is removed from the slate, it will remain a part of the DCEU.
        The Joker Origin story, Shazam, Ben Affleck's script and his brother's comments aren't actually relevant. They have served to stoke your suspicions and general confusion, but that won't change the fact that until Warner Bros removes the Batman from the DCEU slate, it is part of the DCEU slate.
        Anybody who thought otherwise was jumping the gun. Factual = Batman is part of the DCEU slate. Not factual = There is some shady stuff going on that when you take all together maybe sort of indicate that the DCEU is crumbling.
        When Warner Bros remove the movie from the slate, I will refer to it as separate from the DCEU. Until then, the reality remains as I have previously laid out. It's about damn time we removed all the subjectivity from these discussions and actually look at the facts available to us as they are.

    Yeah, and that's the damning part. This is pretty much another case of confusion much like the Amy Pascal's nebulous comments on whether Venom was part of the MCU or not. And even Pascal never said definitively that Venom was part of the MCU(just that it was the part of the same Marvel brand).
    These creatives need to phrase these statements more precisely, because news on the internet is much like a balloon, the more air you blow into it the bigger the story it becomes. Reeves is talented, and a worthy person to take the directors torch from Nolan but this was his blunder.

    This is similar to Logan, when Hugh or the director I believe mentioned that it wouldn't be in the X-Men film series. By that, they meant it would be standalone but still in continuity. I was sure that's what Matt Reeves meant about Batman.

        I actually do own a small number of TWX shares; their stock price is pretty much driven entirely by the AT&T merger terms right now and the success of the films is irrelevant as far as that goes. The best thing I've gotten out of owning them is a hard copy of this year's Annual Report with Wonder Woman on the cover.

      You're just throwing words back at me at this point. Reeves said that, which by itself was reason enough to actually want some damn answers. He did, obviously, and now it's cleared up, but to even think that it didn't need answers is wrong. He did need to clear it up because the comment he made was reason enough to make some heads turn.
      Also, you clearly have not been paying attention. "Not the case"? Affleck didn't say he'd be Batman after the next movie he is doing. He simply put it all on WB's part. He didn't give a clear answer. Affleck loves the character, I don't doubt that, but he has other priorities and a different career besides acting, and the dude is simply not the athletic type which can hurt his will to keep playing such a physically demanding character. I hope he stays, for continuity's sake and I love the dude, but the way he lives his life, and how old he is, makes it very difficult.

They need to stop this kind of thing with official press releases and tell people to ignore everything outside of that. Just like I predicted yesterday! Similar to Wonder Woman, it will still be set in the DCEU, but it will focus solely on the title character without having to tie into other DCEU movies too much.
I just hope we at least get some sort of cameo from Supes!

any smart person would of known that this was the case lol theres too much money at stake and why would WB give up on a universe after they just fixed the problem they were perceived to have with WW , not to mention the fact that they made 3 billion the first 4 movies they put out . Now if they wanna make movie separate from the DCEU thats fine and I'm all for that but lets establish the main DCEU movies first and then do movies outside of it , it happens in comics all the time and it makes me believe that WB/DC is working on an infinite crisis movie in the future and The Flashpoint movie will introduce the multi-verse . WB has to work on their PR and marketing team so we don't have these same problems in the future

        You're fixed on the end result without acknowledging the hell that it went through. All I'm saying is despite the backlash that the MCU has faced, they were able to be the juggernaut industry that they are now. Despite the rewrites and multiple directors, Flash could have a similar success that Ant-Man had.

  Edward Norton was the Hulk in their SECOND movie and left.
  Rourke was the villain in their third movie.
  Edgar Wright was working in Ant-Man since Iron Man 1.
  Also, War Machine actor left after Iron Man 1 and they hired Don Cheadle for Iron Man 2.
  All of this in their first 3 movies.

      Ant-Man doesn't even begin to compare. Ant-Man had 2 directors... The Flash has already had 3.
      Also, Ant-Man was never in "development hell" as you claimed, that's clearly not true.
      Edgar Wright was busy making other films before he and Feige set out to make Ant-Man. He was just hired a long time before the same way that Dwayne Johnson was cast as Black Adam long before he will ever appear. That doesn't mean Shazam (or Black Adam) is in "development hell".
      Ant-Man was a side project for Edgar Wright, which he sometimes worked on between his other projects. Once he finished The World's End, he really started working on Ant-Man. He dropped out due to obvious creative differences, the exact same way that Michelle Maclaren dropped out of WW due to creative differences. That analogy is far more reasonable than Ant-Man and the Flash.
      Outside of Wright's departure... the movie had almost zero problems behind the scenes. Admittedly, that departure was significant at such a late stage into development, but you cannot say Marvel didn't handle it properly.
      WB STILL has no director, even after 4 years. It took Marvel one month. No difference you say? Give me a break.
      Say what you will about Marvel, but at least they are organized and they know what they're doing. WB has no fucking clue.

        Dude, Ant-Man was in talks for YEARS. Even as a side project it still took YEARS before any updates were made about it. If that happened with any DC films, folks here would've been speculating that the project was dead and WB wasn't gonna admit it. At least with Black Adam, it doesn't have a writer or director yet. Wright had to do numerous scripts. It's release date kept being moved forward despite the script not being good enough for both parties.
        After Wright left, the composer and cinematographer had dropped out. Oh and guess who also dropped out of the film? Patrick Wilson, Matt Gerald, and Kevin Weisman.
        Don't tell me about Marvel being organized during that whole fiasco when they kept moving the release forward. Yeah Flash doesn't have a director, but at least they seem to be taking their time with finding another instead of scrambling for one. Hell when WB does take their time, folks on here still complain.

        That blatantly doesn't prove, even in the slightest, that the movie was in development hell, as you say. Edgar Wright made 3 movies between his announcement and Ant-Man's release. He is not superhuman. It was never their intention to release an Ant-Man movie so soon. It wasn't even on the original slate.

        Because Ant-Man was already well into production. Marvel had no choice... Ironically, in WB's laziness and utter incompetence, they have all the time in the world. Are you really suggesting that WB is the better organized studio here? Because if you are, you are simply dead wrong.
        It's not a matter of "taking their time". The Flash movie SHOULD already be in production right now. Marvel never made any such promises, that is the difference. Also, let's suppose that Ant-Man truly was a shithole during production. That ONE exception still pales in comparison to WB's regular behind the scenes drama and poor decision making.
        It's easier to forgive one or two mistakes when they consistently knock it out of the park. Whereas WB, even one more mistake is catastrophic, considering they have only had ONE hit in the last 5 years.

One of the characters Marvel says it aims to adapt is Ant-Man.
        It's not until 2013 when there's news of the script being finished. Development hell.

        Exactly, and Ant-Man was the 6th character they made a movie about. If anything they still kept their promise. Ant-Man was NEVER supposed to be a Phase 1 movie.

        No, I asked you, I didn't accuse you. But if you deny it nonetheless, than you do prove WB is the worse studio in terms of planning and execution, in which case this argument is over.

        Whedon complained about creative limitations... hardly a massive behind the scenes issue. Whedon still has mad respect for Feige and you know it.
        Rourke barely said a thing worth remembering, and his character was a one movie type thing anyways, so it doesn't matter either way.
        Norton is valid, but hardly relevant in the grander scheme of things. If he had played Banner in Avengers and cameo'd in other films and NOW he would be leaving, then that would be a really good point. But Norton left not because Marvel was messy or disorganized. He left because HE himself is a notoriously difficult actor to work with and his demands were simply unreasonable. That's completely different from what's happening with WB and for example Ben.

        Which is a testament to the brand, not the studio or the filmmakers themselves.

I can't wait for the announcement of the new Batman. When Affleck is out, I'll throw a Batman themed party. Affleck's acting was so cookie cutter anyone could play the character and better. Except for Kevin Conroy, whose only expertise is be a voice actor and not live actor.
Affleck will probably go back to movies, in which he'll star in as well. LOL...like what kind of challenge is that? Directing himself?
Even before The Batman is even worked on, I will make this prediction. Whoever plays The Batman for Matt Reeves, he'll most likely be the best Batman ever, even surpassing the great Christian Bale. The reason for this is simple. If Reeves delivers what he has promised, we will have a detective story Batman more than a live action one. This will be more challenging because the focus will have to be split between Batman and Bruce Wayne as well as the conflict that lies within. The same kind of style Nolan did, but to the next level. It's my hope that the new Batman will be pre-Robin, just like Bale's Batman was. From there, the audience can grown and empathetically invest in the new Batman.
