on Ben Affleck: "unique visions" make Justice League "an interesting product of two directors"

After sharing some Justice League concept art and a brief Ben Affleck interview, Entertainment Weekly is back today with more from the Batman actor. This time he spoke about Zack Snyder having to step away from the project, and Joss Whedon coming in to finish the movie.

“It’s a little bit unorthodox,” Affleck admitted. “Zack had a family tragedy, and stepped off, which was horrible. For the movie, the best person we could’ve possibly found was Joss. We got really lucky that he stepped in.” Affleck went on to describe Justice League as “an interesting product of two directors, both with kind of unique visions, both with really strong takes. I’ve never had that experience before making a movie. I have to say, I really love working with Zack, and I really love the stuff we’ve done with Joss.”

Affleck said that reshoots have been part of every movie he's worked on, even his own like Argo and Gone Baby Gone, and that they don't mean there's anything wrong with Justice League. Affleck seems more excited than ever to be part of the DC Extended Universe.

“This is a really nice time to work in DC. They’re hitting their stride. They’re getting it right. It’s starting to feel like it’s really working," he concluded.

I think it's high time Terrio shared in the blame. I agree that the captain of the ship is ultimately responsible for its sinking, but the watcher who did not notice an iceberg point blank is also absolutely at fault. Terrio does not seem to know the first thing about DC heroes, and even tho I bet the whole redemption arc for Batman was Snyder's idea, it was Terrio who shaped it in that way.

I can forgive an obvious tool. I can at least say, "God bless his heart" about Ayer...And he IS a tool. But at the very least he tried to do DC justice.

What I cannot forgive is hubris. Snyder has gone on the record long ago that he does NOT like DC. So why do all that? Because he though he could do DC right. That he alone had the vision to do it right. Disregard the core stuff that the entire world loves. And then have the audacity to tell us that if we read any of Superman's comics, we should know that he did not change anything. Or hide like a bitch ass coward behind "Batman killed in other movies."

That I am not willing to forgive.

As to Goyer, I'm still not sure he is right for DC in general. He may be a competent storyteller, but he is not a fan of those characters.

Superman was an asshole in the comics.
Superman contemplated about hanging up the cape in the comics.

Not for one second did I ever believe that Snyder had a passion for these characters. He said the exact opposite years ago. I agree with everything you're saying though, but Snyder very clearly has never read a comic book in his life, apart from Watchmen obviously. The fact that he said Batman killed "tons of people" in TDKR, proves he's never even fucking bothered to read the graphic novel in the first place. And Batman also doesn't shoot that "Believe me"-goon in the head. If anything, it's unclear as to where he was shot, but one thing IS very clear. Even Miller's take on Batman REFUSED to kill and never resorted to lethal force. Snyder thought he was using real bullets, but in fact he used rubber bullets. Seriously though, he makes it very clear not to resort to guns and killing, yet we're supposed to believe he gladly shot someone in the head 2 seconds later? If anything, it's a mistake on the artist's part. Snyder has never been a fan... He despised Superman, he admitted as much himself. Only when he got the job, did he pretend to be a fan all along.
I have no problem with these directors not being avid comic book readers... but at least be fucking honest about it.

Thank you. Seriously, I cannot fathom as to how people who visit a site called "Batman"-News of all things, are so quick to accept a version of Batman that outright kills people and basically doesn't represent anything the character originally stood for. And then they have the audacity to call him the closest we've ever gotten to the comics? Do these people even read comics, ffs? He's the opposite of Batman. He's a mindless brute with zero capacity for empathy, he kills people, he's irrational, his actions are retarded and make no sense, he's the opposite of subtle, he uses guns, kills people, never works in the shadows, and he fucking kills people.
Sure, Bale's fight scenes weren't as elegant and neither was his voice, but... he had tactical awareness, he didn't kill people, he was rational and used his brain during fights (especially in BB), he had humanity, he was subtle and worked in the shadows, never used guns, etc.

Batman works best if he's portrayed as a monster in the eyes of criminals... and monsters work best onscreen if you don't show them that much. Snyder fails to understand this and shows Batman in extremely well-lit rooms which destroys the illusion (never mind the fact that it makes the fake muscles of the suite so fucking obvious) of him looking more than just a simple human. It's all style, and zero substance.
Bale was, as a matter of fact, WAY closer to the comics than Affleck ever was. Affleck looks and fights like him, but those are superficial characteristics. Bale's philosophy and personality was fare closer to that of the comics.
Like you said, at this point, it doesn't even matter if they "address" the killing thing in BvS. If anything, that just proves that they royally fucked up his character in BvS, and I freaking hate Snyder (as a director) for that. The interview where he "rationalizes" as to why his Batman kills, makes me want to puke my guts out. Seriously, it's like he wants to offend and annoy the fans. People hated that he made Superman a killer in MoS (I didn't really mind it, because he showed remorse, he didn't want to kill him, and he really had no choice as no prison could hold Zod)... so what does he do in the sequel? You would think he had enough brain power to understand you can't make the ONE guy in comics who's universally known to have a no-kill rule, into a killer... yet that is exactly what he did. He made him into a brutal, irrational psychopath. Fucking hell, I will never EVER get over that. Because that would imply I would forgive Snyder, which I won't.
Maybe I could have accepted it if they fucking tried to explain as to why he kills, but they didn't even bother. Again, when Snyder was asked this very question, he just said "the previous Batmans have killed, and in TDKR he kills all the time (which is not even true)".
The reality is, he despises... he has outright contempt for superheroes who don't take lives. He said so ten years ago. He said that superheroes who don't murder and don't have sex are boring and he doesn't like them. What. The. Actual. Fuck.
It doesn't take a genius to grasp why he turned Superman AND Batman into killers. He just doesn't care. He gives no fucks about character and comic book lore. He's so fucking pretentious as to think he's got it all figured out and "his" vision reigns supreme.
I am truly sorry for his loss, as a human being... But I couldn't be happier that he's finally gone from the DCEU forever. They should have just dropped him after MoS.

My personal favorite (action) remains the first ever Batman scene in Nolan's trilogy. The one in Batman Begins where he takes out Falcone. Just everything about it. Stealth, and combat. He was literally so quick that people couldn't properly see him. I LOVED that. I know the fast editing is controversial, but it seems to me people just didn't understand what Nolan was trying to achieve in that particular scene. But to all the blind Affleck riders who say Bale's Batman couldn't fight, you need not look further than the Prewitt building fight from TDK you described. Taking out 2 SWAT teams, dozens of goons and the Joker apparently isn't impressive of any sorts according to some people.
Don't get me wrong, I think Affleck has potential, and even though he's not 1% the actor that Bale is (although not many people are), I still defended his casting since day 1. If he doesn't shine with Matt Reeves directing him though, I will retract my words in a second.

I also didn't hate Bale's voice... but I do think in the 2 sequels it was a bit too much. However, as you said, he did have range. Affleck does not. Just imagine the ending scene of TDK with the electronic Batman voice. It wouldn't work.

"then they Google "Batman kills" when they get home and stake their flags in these lists of all the times comic book Batman has killed, but they do so with no awareness of the context or evolution of the character."
Applause, buddy. You nailed it. These are the same people who berate Bale's Batman for having an all black suite, because "that's not like the comics". These are the same people who berate Bale for not fighting like a superhuman, because "that's not like the comics". These are the same people who berate Bale's Batman for retiring, because "that's not like the comics".
Yet they never apply their own fake comic book expertise when it comes to Batman's CORE character trait. Because after all, in some random comic from 1939, he used a gun therefore Affleck is supposedly completely within the boundaries of being a faithful adaptation. Well, I guess another Adam West-type Batman for the DCEU's version of Flashpoint is completely okay then, because that's how Batman was in the 60s! Oh wait, now everybody understands that the character has evolved from his campy days. And while it does have a place in his history, it does not have a place in the current canon of who Batman is.
Just like you, I am so fucking tired of their double standards and their justification of Snyder's butchery. It's blind fanboy acceptance. Nothing more.

          1. Seb Avatar

I agree the characterization was intact, but my point was that deluded fanboys don't think so... and as you've said, Batman has retired in several forms of media. It's not exactly out-of-character. Not to mention, Nolan told a three-arc story. Movies don't have the luxury of never-ending stories. He *had* to conclude his story one way or another. Everyone was expecting death, but that's not what Nolan gave us. Retirement is far more satisfying, because you know that this character you've grown to love over three movies, finally gets what he genuinely deserves: happiness and peace. So even though it's not exactly 100% like the comics, the change was necessary and for the better. It actually contributed to his arc and ended the trilogy perfectly. You can't really do that if Batman decides to continue his quest after Bane's defeated. There would be no sense of closure or resolution. As I've said, it was either death or retirement, and I'd choose the latter every single time.

And still, I find Batman's rule to be his greatest strength... not because I necessarily agree with his morals (although I do)... but because this gives us infinite narrative possibilities which simply wouldn't exist if he just killed anyone who so much as looked at him the wrong way. His rule is THE reason for his rogues gallery. It's THE reason why Red Hood works so well. It's THE reason why he's respected amongst the League. It's true that his actions (or rather, his inactions) lead to more deaths, but that contradiction and duality is precisely what makes him interesting as a character.

          2. Seb Avatar
            Sebreplying to Seb

I just think it has to do with accepting whatever's the new thing. I have no doubt when they'll reboot the Batman universe in ten years and get another actor, even if he's worse than Affleck (which I doubt is even possible), they'll defend it to their deaths because "some time, and some point, Batman did one particular thing in one comic, therefore everything's justified".
People freaking loved Nolan's trilogy and rightly so. They were the first to shit on Keaton and co. Now the same happens with Snyder and his "trilogy". As I said, it is blind acceptance.
I also believe the overwhelming majority of Batman-News readers haven't actually read a single comic in their lives, which is absolutely fine btw. But they are in no position to pretend otherwise, yet they do.

          3. Seb Avatar

"Keaton fans were the first to slam Adam West, that was part of the appeal of Burton's Batman films."
Yes, exactly. That's my point. With each new iteration, fans suddenly bash the previous one. It's the same story over and over again. Nothing's changed.
I'm not saying it's wrong to criticize the previous versions or prefer the newer ones... But I am saying it's wrong when you do so, for the sake of it. Imho, Bale is the best Batman ever. Because he embodies everything about Batman so damn well. Keaton, I'm kind of indifferent about. I enjoy him in the role, but that's not really Batman to me. It's a Burton movie first, and it shows. They never delved into Batman's psyche, and of course he's also a killer. The fact that he kills never really bugged me because that Batman was just a byproduct of his time. The no-kill rule wasn't as firmly established as it is today, and Burton clearly wasn't aiming for a faithful adaptation of Batman's traditional philosophy, whereas Nolan made that his priority. Nolan made a character study with BB (hence why it's my favorite of the trilogy).

I'm just the same... I don't read many comics, but I do read Batman, and on some occasions I read JL stuff. And of course I've watched and played every cartoon, animated movie / show, videogame there is. I don't claim to know Iron Man or Thor either... But I honestly feel right to say I do know Batman down to a T. And Snyder's Batman is the opposite of what he's supposed to be.

Bale didn't directly kill, with the one exception of Dent. But even then, I don't see it as him "killing" Dent.
As for Ra's, I still cannot fathom as to how people can genuinely think Bale "killed" him. Seriously, he did nothing. He did not kill him.
And Talia, that was her own fault. As stated in the movie, Batman was merely trying to redirect the truck through suppressive fire. It was really Talia's stubbornness that lead to her death. She was the one who drove that truck off of the bridge. I genuinely see it as being 100% her own fault.
Again, Dent is the only one I can sort of agree where Batman "killed" someone... and even then, it's clear he didn't even mean to. To me it was very obvious that he just tried to tackle Dent to the ground, but with being hit by a bullet and all, he misjudged the situation. Why the fuck else, would he push Gordon's son AND himself off of the building as well? If he just wanted to push Dent off of the building to kill him, he could have just done so without going down alongside him.
And as you said, these were movies... realistic movies. There are consequences to one's actions and it's practically impossible for Batman to always make the right decision without there ever being casualties. It's realistically not possible. It works in the comics, but not the movies. So I was completely satisfied with Nolan's take on the rule. And Dent's death didn't bother me whatsoever.
I'm just saying, if I was in charge of these movies... If I had the opportunity to direct a Batman film, I would truly respect his rule to the fullest, with zero exception. But that's just me of course.

I agree with you on the Batman mischaracterizations, don't get me wrong. However, having grown up with STAS and JLU, I feel the most poorly conceptualized characters in BvS were Lex Luthor and Doomsday. I wanna know what Snyder and Terrio/Goyer were smoking during their conceptualization of Lex being a Jim Carrey Riddler and Johnny Depp Willy Wonka blend with some of the most terrible dialogue I've ever seen in this genre, or Doomsday and the "death of Superman" arc being so shoehorned in that it was beyond insulting.

This is something that I anticipated and can understand. There is no possible way that you can expect Joss Whedon to have the same directive style as Zack Snyder; and to expect him to is a disservice to him as a director. I am not a fan of Joss, but I've found myself defending him quite frequently these past couple of months. The man is literally working on a film he did not start, and yet he has to finish the product of the film as best he can. I am sure he wants to make a good movie - with respect to Snyder - but you cannot expect someone to transfer their way of doing things for the sake of the people. He probably wouldn't be able to do it, and you cannot fault him for that. Every director has their own style and formula for success.

Zack Snyder personally asked Joss to step in when he decided to step down. WB had offered to postpone the release of Justice League until Zack was ready, but Zack declined. He didn't want to do that to the fans and moviegoers alike. Joss is working with what he can to make the best movie possible. I am holding out judgement until the film releases. If in the end it is evident that Joss completely disrespected Zack's vision or it turns out to be a shitty movie because of Joss, then maybe we can talk about how discouraged we are. But, people have been attacking Joss unnecessarily while he works on this film as though he hijacked the production of the movie and completely stole it from Zack. The truth of the matter is that Zack handed it to Joss with the intention the man could finish what he so obviously cannot due to his tragedy.

As to Ben's comments - he speaks with such conviction and grace. I prefer to hear his comments about the matter over any blogger or clickbait site who has no clue what is going on.

Was it also Snyder's intention for Whedon to get rid of Junky XL? Was it also his intention to rewrite the character of Cyborg?

      1. Unique Jenique Avatar
        Unique Jenique

The release of Junkie XL - while disappointing - was probably another cog in an endless series of cogs we won't understand so that Joss can work comfortably to get the job done. He hadn't worked with Junkie before and perhaps they were not meshing as nicely as they would have liked. Joss is responsible for the final development of the film, making sure it's done, and that includes the score. Zack decided to COMPLETELY step away from the film. For goodness sake, he wasn't even at SDCC. He isn't tweeting about it. He isn't TALKING about it. It is still Zack's film but right now it is Joss' responsibility to finish it. Let the man do what he can to make sure it's still a good film. The character of Cyborg isn't being completely rewritten. They are adding a few scenes of dialogue. People are making such a big deal about this and not just WAITING to see what happens. Morton's words left me with the impression that he truly has NO clue what the reshoots are for. He said he wasn't sure. He thought it was for this, that or, the other.

          Kerk Lastnameless

You're sweeping it under the rug. First you say that what is happening now was Snyder's intention, then, reminded of Junky XL, you say that it's just a part of the process. You can't have it both ways. As far as I'm concerned, all evidence points to the movie having been completely taken away from Snyder. And it was done with WB's blessing and on WB's money.

          1. Unique Jenique Avatar
            Unique Jeniquereplying to Kerk Lastnameless

Actually, you didn't read what I wrote. Joss taking OVER was Snyder's intention when it was decided that he could no longer continue with the production of the film. Joss letting Junkie XL go and bringing in Danny Elfman was his decision and was probably done so that he could easily transition into the post-production of the film. I'm sure it wasn't an easy decision, but it happened. There is nothing we can do. I CAN have it both ways because that is exactly what is happening. Joss is trying to finish Zack's vision while also bringing his own skill sets to the table. No one took the film away from Snyder. The film is still his in the end, but the reshoots and the post-production is in Joss' hands. Someone recently posted this on Twitter. Sums up what I am trying to say. Apparently Zack is more involved in post-production than I thought.

"Easily transition into the post-production of the film" -- what does that even mean? The film WAS in post-production when Whedon took over. What does changing the score have to do with it? No, the score is being changed because the tone of the movie is being changed. There are other clues to that. There is much less filtering in the recent trailer than in the early footage. There are 30 mln dollars worth of reshoots. And there are changes to Cyborg's character. You gotta be pretty naive to think that all this amounts to simply finishing the movie. You don't finish like that. This is the very definition of "changing." Or in this case, most likely, "fixing."

you have a good point about that , like I said before if Zack was dropped by WB I will not support the DCEU regardless how well JL does because he was the architect behind the DCEU and he deserves more then that but if he really did drop out of it then thats fine he is dealing with a terrible tragedy , I would like to believe that he's telling the truth

my thing is Zack said that the tone was always gonna be lighter before they started filming the movie so how much more of the tone would have to get changed ? thats doesn't make sense that Josh is changing the tone if they already had planned on making it lighter in tone

Absolutely. Remember how about 1.5 years ago they invited all the prominent critics over to the studio to suck up to them and convince them that they learned the thing about the "tone?" Back then it was a big deal. Well, if it was the original plan, then why do we have what we have now? The tone should have been light from the get go, according to the plan.

No. It was a lie. Either that, or it was Snyder's vision of "light," which did not agree with Johns's.

Normally, the score to a film is one of the last things to get finished. It's highly unlikely Junkie even had it all figured out at that point. He isn't Hans Zimmer. He's still learning his craft. "Easily Transition Into The Post-Production" means that in order for Joss to do what needs to be done he wanted to work with people he was familiar with and so he could do the job with ease. What don't you understand? Where is the evidence that the score is being changed to match the tone? The reshoots were planned WITH ZACK. Christ. How many times do I have to say that to people? Zack was going to do the reshoots and then he left and now Joss is doing them. That is the reason why Zack had to come out and announce his departure from the film. He was going to do them and he realized he couldn't and so Joss took over. Because idiots would have speculated and thought he was being fired he had to come out and say his daughter killed herself and hand it over to Joss. If Zack had finished the reshoots no one would be freaking out. So let's just say that the tone is being changed for one character. Big deal. That doesn't mean the whole film is being redone. And the trailer I saw in July clearly looked like a Zack Snyder film. It sure as hell didn't look like The Avengers. So I don't get what you mean by filters looking different.

You realize we've all read all the same articles as you have about this film, right? It is possible to draw different conclusions from the same news source material, whilst you speak like Zack's biographer in the know. And yes, the colors were more vibrant in the July trailer than they were in the initial comic con trailer from way back, whose blue tint mirrored the coloring and shading of Man of Steel and BVS, while the latest one takes on a bit more of the brightened hues of Wonder Woman.

It's absolutely ridiculous. It's come to a point where Ben has been labeled a liar - and all of that nonsense stemmed from when he decided to step down as director. I guess Ben hurt their poor feelings and now they are all mad at him. What a bunch of childish whiners.

      1. Unique Jenique Avatar

He committed to the character and decided to direct at the same time. He decided it wasn't for him and stepped away. I've never gotten the impression that he wasn't 100% committed to the actual character and the DCEU. If anything, I'm surprised he's been this devoted considering his divorce, alcohol addiction and recovery, etc. I can't help but feel many have some kind of animosity toward him because he decided that directing The Batman wasn't going to work for him. I mean, we'll see.

the crybaby returns , first of all batman has killed in the comics and movies before so lets not act like that hasn't happened. should Zack had went that route is another discussion at first I was mad about it because Batman doesn't kill but thats the direction he choose to go and the story he was trying to tell. This is a DKR inspired batman more brutal and ruthless after 20 years of fighting crime we haven't seen that on film so I give him a pass and quite honest its bad ass and Batman is inspired by Superman's sacrifice and has hope again , it seems like your just bashing Zack a little too harshly its a movie about fictional comic book characters grow up and stop crying

Sent a car careening into some suicide bombers in DC 590

Blew up a bunch of crooks in Legends of the Dark Knight 31.

Whedon is directing scenes what he wrote by Zack Snyder's request. What he's doing was approved by Snyder. Everthing said and done soo far is about supporting Snyder's vision. That was very clear from the start. Whedon helping is just another step of the process.

2 weeks for Argo reshoots? Huh. That film is non-fiction. Member when WW was a mess and needed to be remade? Aquaman will get the same stink, just you wait...

It´s the changed score and lack of final cut for Zack i am somewhat worried about if anything. It´s also unlikely that Joss will get director credit, a director as Batfleck should know that too, so it´s quit weird that he is so open about giving Joss a major creative credit in the press. This can only lead to more drama around the time of release.
