'Wonder Woman' crosses $400 million domestically to become one of WB's most successful movies ever

Today is a huge day for Wonder Woman. It's been kicking butt at the box office all summer, but today it crossed the $400 million mark domestically. It's the 27th movie ever to do that, and is now one of Warner Bros.' most successful movies of all time.

With $400 million, Wonder Woman is now Warner Bros.' third highest-grossing domestic release ever, behind only The Dark Knight ($534.8M) and The Dark Knight Rises ($448.1M). It is also the biggest movie of the summer here in the US, beating out other superhero movies like Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and Spider-Man: Homecoming.

Worldwide, Wonder Woman has made about $793.8 million. It will cross the big $800 million milestone in the next few days.

      Me too. I like his style (story as well as visuals).
      I honestly do not care about what the critics say. And call me selfish, but I don't care what the general audience thinks, I want to enjoy these movies. I don't care if others do or not.
      Now I know that if a movie is not widely accepted that it will not bring in money and they'll stop making movies, but honestly I just want a good trilogy of MoS-BvS-JL in Zack's style. If I got only that and nothing else, I'd be happy. I love these movies and I don't care what anyone else thinks about them. If they want to do something else in the DCEU after Justice League, fine. But maintain the style through JL.
      I'm just so tired of people bashing Zack. If you don't like his style, I can understand and respect that, but don't bash him or people who like him. Those of us who like Zack's style at least want to see the rest of the story he has for us.

        I'm not him, but whether these characters are loved by "a small minority" or not (and when I was collecting comics at the height of the Claremont X-Men era, those who preferred DC to Marvel were definitely a smallish minority of comics fandom) is irrelevant to me. The idea that Zack would give DC a "bad image" is just odd given that, to reuse Stephen King's point, whatever is made for a movie has absolutely no effect on the 80 years of DC comics sitting on the shelf waiting to be read. So yeah, I'll take Zack's movies that ask us to rethink these characters any day of the week over movies that just adapt comic book stories.

        Its less Snyder's style (i actually love Watchman and 300 and i like MoS) and more the writing and the way he treats the characters what are my problems. I'm really hoping JL is good though and i did love the recent trailer but his take on Superman and to an extent Batman are pretty awful in my opinion so i'm not holding my hopes up.
        Hey if you like them though then good for you and i actually mean that, its actually nice to see a comment what doesn't get bitchy at anyone who dares to dislike them

  If the franchise didn't have such a rocky start, with good reviews and word of mouth, a Justice League movie could probably rival The Force Awakens' box office... No joke, that's how big these characters are, even though some haven't even had a theatrical live action movie.

      Justice League, and heroes like Batman, Superman, or Wonder Woman are extremely famous. I agree that in cinema, Star Wars is unrivaled, franchise-wise. But these characters are huge. Batman alone, without no "fancy" shared universe setting, was able to make 1 billion itself, on the second movie of the franchise, after the first didn't even make 400M worldwide. These characters together for the first time in cinema history, the team that is, is huge, or should be. Batman v Superman had an opening that could eclipse The Avengers total box office. It didn't, but that is another subject entirely. The point is many people even grew up with these characters thanks to the strong individual cartoons from the 90's and the Justice League cartoon that followed. They have huge brand awareness, and with a good cinematic universe to kick it off, it would just blow up on huge levels. I'm not saying it would top 2 billion, but it could have a fighting chance. Now it's impossible, but had it been better handled so far, you'd see a much stronger and a more standout franchise.

        People like Shane are just using blind Snyder hate to ignore what Spider-Man is going through: Fatigue. This is a problem for Superman and Batman. Not to mention the fact that most would have a hard time convincing others that anyone besides Christopher Reeve and Christian Bale are the World's Finest. Idiots like abkinxoc don't understand this because their favorite characters, up to about 17 years ago, have been one on-screen dumpster fire after another.
        Justice League has a bigger problem, and it starts on December 15. JL could have 100 percent RT (which I loathe to bring up), great word of mouth, special cameos by Hal Jordan and Darkseid, and have people like Shane change their tune. It doesn't matter. On December 15 it, and every other movie still out stops making money.
        Justice League has 28 days to make $1 billion. It won't, regardless of what factors you choose to include.

        Either way, I couldn't care less anymore. I love DC, Superman's my favourite and Batman is up there, but after such a rocky start, and the fact that Snyder still directed this one, I'm not that hyped. If it makes a billion? We'll see, but it did have way more potential than it currently has.

        phenomenon that sparked a broader interest in Nolan’s series. He never cracked a billion prior. A never before seen Batman paired with a Superman who’s movie received a lukewarm response, doesn't guarantee a billion even with good reviews. I’m sure no one expected that a Spider-Man movie featuring RDJ would struggle to crack 300 mil domestically.

        While Ledger's Joker did help those numbers the film did pretty much put Batman at top and a character what just prints money, Rises was huge and WB has pretty much forced Batman into everything they can, i half expected a Wayne cameo at the end of WW.
        BvS underperformed but did make big numbers and thats with poor reviews and not so good word of mouth, if it had great reviews and everyone liking it then it would have crossed a billion, i mean its pretty clear WB were expecting that as well. Just remember WW has done better then anyone thought it would despite being part of a unproven universe, a director whose only had one flm before it, a actress whose never had a hit, isn't a big name and has never been that good acting wise (before WW because she was amazing as Diana) and is a character whose never had a live action film before but with great reviews, nice build of hype and great word of mouth its done extremely well and has ruled the summer.

        The movie itself was an event. It broke new ground because of how good it was, in almost every department, not just one actor's brilliant portrayal of an iconic character.
        Also, Batman v Superman's record breaking worldwide opening suggests otherwise. It literally needed less than a 2.5 worldwide multiplier to reach the billion dollar mark, which is a very easy multiplier to reach taken into account the popularity of these characters and whatnot. It had shit word of mouth and laughable critical reception. The two main reasons it didn't get there (a direct consequence of the movie's quality).

        Forgetting how good or bad The Flash show is but thanks to that he's got more fame now, then ever, i know people who are more interested in JL now because it has The Flash even if its not the shows Flash. Stuff like this is why i'm suprised a Flash film isn't out yet because right now he's pretty popular, you only need to see Injustice 2 with its big increase Flash related characters and easter eggs to the CW show that he's bigger then he was 5 years back.
        The JL right now has more famous and big characters in it then the first Avengers film did before it released yet due to BvS and other things they have screwed up their chances of those box office numbers. At least WW being in it will get more people watching because right now she's their golden child in box office, reviews and the public loving her and her film.

  Honestly i don't know if it will hit the billion mark because its releasing around the same time Thor 3 is out what will do well and once Star Wars is out i can see JL start to lag behind. It will most likely do very well and hopefully it will be good and review well but its outin the middle of two big other movies with one being Star Wars what will destroy everything in its path. I honestly think WB are stupid for putting up then we will see once it arrives, if it reviews bad then honestly i think it will lucky to reach BvS and WW numbers.

And GOTG2 is still a sequel with 5+ main characters while Wonder Woman is an origin film. None of Marvel's origin movies came even close to grossing as much As WW

      Apparently people developed that fatigue only after it underperformed nobody was saying that prior to the release or when it opened bigger than Wonder Woman. Anyway critics may have helped Wonder Woman but they were not key to it success people just genuinely fell in love with the movie. $42M on a THIRD WEEKEND after a $103M opening isn't the sign of a well received movie it's the sign of a pop culture moment.

        So let me get this straight:
        -Spider-Man is on his second reboot with a new actor and it's fatigue.
        -Both Batman and Superman are on their second reboot (yes Superman Returns was a reboot, half-assed as it was) on who know's what number actor plus 70-plus years of classic television and animation and the $842 million it made was a failure not because of fatigue but because you don't like the guy who directed it.

        Just like critics really liked it in general. Which is one of the points of Shane in this chain. They shared their opinion on the movie, and word of mouth, besides critical reception, was excellent. That made people want to see it, including those who definitely wouldn't if friends, family or websites told them it was a mediocre/bad movie.
        Denying the influence of social media/news outlets/critics on how a movie performs is simply wrong. It can have an influence, ESPECIALLY on movies of this genre. Blockbusters in general, really. Doesn't always mean the movie will be a critical success, but it can help it get there.

        I'm a huge Web-Head fan (I saw Raimi's first movie 10 times in the theatre) & maybe it's because I only saw ASM once...on a borrowed blu-ray and never saw ASM2, but I didn't feel this was fatiguing. I think it was because it was a meh version of the character.
        Maybe it's because I'm decades out of school, but I didn't care for the school cast. I'd prefer more scenes with Aunt May. There were other factors too; his motivation, the suit, AWOL Ben. In the end, for me, it looked like Spider-man, it just didn't feel like it.
        When I read "character fatigue" I flashed back to when WB stated the GL movie did poorly because audiences had superhero movie fatigue. That's been more then proven to be bull shit.

    It won´t quite measure up in the US (the foreign numbers will be higher though) but SS numbers will be reach in the least and the film is a bigger success than the last 2 Spidey films. The RT average is also 0.1 higher, so there is that. Spider-man is better, or so the critics say.

        That conflicts heavily with them offering to delay the film when he was grieving. If they weren't confident about his work, they would've been the ones to nominate Whedon to take over. Zack chose Whedon to finish the job. He trusts Whedon.

    Well I didn't exactly go into batman v Superman looking for things to hate. I walked out feeling disappointed because it just wasn't a great movie. Here's hoping Justice League will be different

  I honestly don't think she will at this point. They are probably looking for another director, and the second the have one, then they'll announce Jenkins' departure, as announcing a new director should help soften the blow. Kathleen Kennedy has been desperately looking for female directors. I almost certain she's considered for the next big Star Wars film.

    She has gone on the record multiple times that she is excited about WW2 and is already working closely with Jones on the script. So, if that was true, then the only reason she won't sign on is if WB offered her insultingly little pay for it. And if THAT's the case, then her departure will be just as devastating to WB PR-wise as Affleck's departure.

      Yeah, but that was weeks if not months ago by now. I too think she was offered not enough pay. I thought she was in the position of power to make demands, but clearly WB isn't having it. If she was directing it, they would have announced it long ago. I'm 90% sure she won't direct the sequel tbh.

        I won't blame Warner fully either though. Sure, WW was good but it wasn't this amazing movie that went and did something new, we have seen it all before. They can replicate the same success with someone else and they don't have to throw a shit ton of money at them.

        I actually didn't like WW that much, so it's not like I view Patty as a "savior" of some sorts, like others seem to do... but from a PR standpoint, it would be a catastrophe.

50.3% of all money was made in the US (good for WB, as this will get the highest return possible) but things get interring one you look how much the film made oversees. $394,400,00 as of now. The last 2 week of release and Japan will get it around the number SS had, namely $420,500,000, and a 50/50 split with foreign markets wasn´t expected by anyone. All this again begs the question how WW managed to become such a phenomenon in the US specifically.
Undeniably an interring topic to research once the film exits the cinemas.

  It's very simple actually: while Wonder Woman is a well-established comic book character in the U.S, it had been essentially nonexistent outside North America. Now that the rest of the world has been exposed to her, the sequel would make a shitload of money worldwide, just like Captain America and Iron-Man.

Just imagine for a moment how much more money BvS would have made if it had the reception WW had.
We would be talking about the highest grossing superhero movie ever without a doubt. They would have embarrassed any Marvel movie at the BO.

        Captain America and Thor do not solely claim those themes lol. Steve has always been in WW lore so why should they change that? A plane sacrifice is hardly an original concept in terms of cinema. So is a fish out of water story. Y'all just bitter no origin film in the MCU has gotten this much success. WW has outgrossed both Cap 1 and Thor 1 combined.

        I can't deny the similarities. They are there but the story called for it. Wonder Woman had very different concepts all together which made it original in its own merit. And clearly the general population has embraced it. Unlike you who just focuses on what makes them similar rather than what makes them different. And seriously? The bar scene from cap? I actually had to look it up cause that movie was so forgettable. As I saw it only Steve Bucky and Peggy were in that. WW didn't copy that scene in the slightest other than it took place in a bar.
