on Ben Affleck's Batman looks menacing in new 'Justice League' promo photo

Last week we got a new portrait of Ben Affleck as Batman from the box art of Justice League action figures, and today another image popped up online -- this time in color.

I don't know about you, but I'll never get sick of seeing new photos of Ben Affleck as Batman. He looks incredible here in his new Justice League costume. From the expression on the cowl, to the look on Affleck's face, this menacing Batman is not to be messed with!

Yesterday Warner Bros. launched official Justice League merchandise which features even more promo art of Batman and the team.

Justice League hits theaters on November 17th.

Ben Affleck straight looks exactly like comic book Batman, it's not even funny. Snyder you're a God at casting. And the costume is ripped straight out of the TDKR.

Suit-wise I thought you'd like the impenetrable cowl/head/chest/limbs, plus its way more flexible and allows him to actually move and he also has gadgets/tools/weapons attached to him that he legit uses to win fights, rather than Bale who can't beat the Joker with 2-3 dogs and a crowbar lol still love TDK so much btw, don't get me wrong

Except Bale's Batman did a better job performance wise and characterization wise. Batfleck is portrayed and shown to be an angry, one dimensional and unsympathetic psychopath who has no emotional weight to him and just an unlikable prick with no redeemable value. In other words, he's the Punisher.

See again, this is your problem, Hamani. You keep thinking you speak for the majority or think you know what the populace does. Saying it was "right there in the film" confirms my point further that you don't like listening to other viewpoints on why they don't like a film. I'm fine if people don't like stuff I like, but even I try to listen to their voice of reasons. Yours on the other hand scream of "that's superficial bs." No I speak for the many people who agree with me. I do listen to other peoples view points and their reasons for disliking the film. Most are subjective but what he said wasn't subjective. He was twsiting an event in the fim or rather saying ot doesn't exist which in fact it does. That moves from the zone of subjective opinion and enters objective fact dispute when he creates false information. I can't accept or respect false facts.

Take a guy fighting crime - and seeing all kinds of criminals and bullies - and before that, a decade alone due to the death of his parents, and then, seeing a powerfull being "destroy" a part of a city, including his own building and his workers and you have a good cocktail mix to his take in that particular storyline.

Try to sense how you would feel if it was with you. Maybe you'd react differently, maybe we would all react positivelly despite the happenings, I don't know. Haven't you ever felt desperate to the point of giving up, letting go or whatever, even if just for a day?

Besides all that, it's a version, a perspective of someone making a movie. You didn't like it? It's fine, some day someone will be able to satisfy you.

Apart from the killings that I wasn't a fan of, I liked the story, the different take on this comicbook world. And in the end it is what it is: fiction. And you waste a tremendous amount of negative energy with this subject.
So, lighten up, someday you'll have the batman/Bruce you love.

PS: I don't get the complaining about the detective part. There are plenty of stories where batman is left in the dark. The Long Halloween is an example of that.

Where did you hear that his body was CGI'd? If you're talking about the suit, that was padding.

Anyway. Let me tell you why I loved Ben Affleck as Bruce Wayne.

      1. He had incredible detective skills. He did his damn homework, whether it was Bruce Wayne or Batman to do the homework, he got it done. That was one thing that really irritated me about Christian Bale's Batman. He should have been able to smell a rat a mile away when it comes to Miranda Tate. That's the only comment I will make about Christian, because we are here to talk about Ben.

      2. We've gotten a young and excited Bruce Wayne/Batman for so long, having an older one was so refreshing. Ben wore the world-weary, tired look so well. You could feel his grief and pain over losing Robin, over having no hope, but just rage and confusion. He tried so hard to remain in control when in reality he was losing it. In the end, we saw he was still the scared child in the alley who saw his parents murdered. Ben did an INCREDIBLE acting job during the "Martha" scene of conveying someone with PTSD, and showing his pain and fear and anguish. I FELT for Bruce Wayne like I never felt before. His childhood trama has always drawn me to him as a character, and this time it really hit home for me.

      3. He was brutal in his fighting style. He has zero tolerance for criminals and really showed his skill. He doesn't play around.

      4. If you want classic Bruce Wayne, you would have to get a younger actor because this is - once again - an older version of Wayne. He's done this before. He's played this act before, but now he's actually living it. He IS an alcoholic but probably a quiet and depressive one. The "drunk" Bruce Wayne we see at the party was all an act, which reminded me very much of a young Bruce Wayne trying to deceive the masses. However, I also got the idea that he was somewhat tired of pretending, tired of mingling with society just so people wouldn't suspect he is Batman. Remember his face when Alfred said that Bruce Wayne was invited to the party? Bruce seemed genuinely disappointed that he WASN'T going to be wearing the suit that night. He hates being Bruce Wayne. He is Batman., which goes even deeper into how fu*ked up his psyche is.

I could sing Ben's praise all night long, but I think I've made my point.

Probably just difference in perspectives, but I completely disagree on what you said about how Affleck had blue collar written all over him. As far as looks go, I think he's fine the way he is, even more than Bale. Affleck, at least to me, looks the part in still pics as well as in action.
The thing with CGI body, well, not sure where that came from, but I'm pretty sure with some hard core work-out Affleck could look that imposing.
You are talking about a Batman in his prime, someone who has not lost his faith in humanity like Batfleck did. A complete lack of restraint and conduct is exactly the thing that made this version of Batman interesting. While the movie only dropped subtle hints here and there, Affleck's performance gave me the sense of war weariness, exhaustion, frustration and someone who has seen far too much and lost too many. He took painkillers with alcohol, indicating a level of abandonment that the normal Bruce would never show. He did not display wise judgment in the movie, but Bruce was also blinded by his rage and helplessness. As for the separation between Bruce and Bats, it appeared that at this point in life Bruce has become a much more involved and influential CEO to Wayne Enterprise, indicating that the Brucie Wayne the socialite has probably matured out of that goofy facade.
True to the comics, this Bruce has 3 personas - the socialite who would get distracted by a pretty girl walking by in the middle of an interview, the violent and forceful Bats he showed to criminals, and the real Bruce, who is actually a good boss to his workers and a shrewd businessman at the helm of WE, who after peeling off the cowl would still brood in the cave, driven by a cause he believed in almost blindly, who only gave an exasperated expression at Alfred's nagging, and who tortured himself everyday by standing in front of the broken remains of his fallen Robin.
While I adore Batfleck, I personally am not fond of the way Zack Snyder made him kill, manslaughter while displaying a disturbing level of apathy for the sake of "cool" shots (like the chase scene). I also dislike the fact that Lex could have manipulated Bruce as such. But those weren't Affleck's faults. Blaming the actor for playing exactly what the narrative of the story wants him to isn't exactly fair.

"virtually no separation between public and private Bruce"
A point very rarely brought up that holds very heavy value. People complain about Bale, for some fucking reason, but he had this to a T. It actually required acting. I like Ben Affleck as an actor, and even more so as a director, and I think he has great potential, but what he did in the movie really wasn't as special as some people make it out to be. People look at a costume and go ballistic because "comic book accurate".

      1. Schuyler Finley Avatar
        Schuyler Finley

But there was a difference. In the party scene, we see the "public" Bruce when he first starts talking to Clark. But as soon as Clark mentions Batman, "private" Bruce slowly starts appearing as the debate continues.

          OGmacrazy

Really? I mean, I knew someone would bring that scene up. Nothing about it was extraordinary or note-worthy in any way, besides that great looking smirk. It's simply a person who got defensive.

            OGmacrazyreplying to Schuyler Finley

Exactly, but was the acting really showing much of anything? He got defensive, that's it. Literally every person on earth does that when in a defensive state. That is not differentiating the public and private personas of Bruce Wayne.

          3. Schuyler Finley Avatar
            Schuyler Finleyreplying to OGmacrazy

So because he got defensive, he didn't show his private persona even as he started doing a thousand-yard as he was talking the destruction that Superman could unleash?

            OGmacrazyreplying to Schuyler Finley

Sure, but what I'm saying is that there really wasn't anything that screamed Batman in that scene. It's merely someone getting defensive.

        1. OGmacrazy Avatar
          OGmacrazy

Sure, but blame the people responsible for choosing that character to begin with. That Bruce was also in his 60's (at least late 50's) while this one was in his mid-40's.

      3. OGmacrazy Avatar
        OGmacrazy

Oh this has been happening ever since BvS debuted in theaters. First the theatrical release was a misunderstood masterpiece that was only hated by critics and audiences because of media bias against DC and all that crap. Then, the Ultimate Edition came out and the theatrical was all WB's fault and bad because of them, but the UE was great and fixed almost every issue with the theatrical release. Then Lego Batman and Wonder Woman came out and put that conspiracy theory about the anti-DC media bias to rest, only for it to turn into an anti-Zack Snyder thing. It's ludicrous and will keep on happening I suppose.

        1. OGmacrazy Avatar
          OGmacrazy

Sadly true. There's nothing wrong with liking him and having him as your favorite, that's your own thing. But to CLAIM he is the best, without much to actually prove it (or anything at all) is a bold statement that some of these people think can be shrugged off without debate. I do get you, believe me. I really like the suit, from an aesthetic point of view (besides when he is on daylight, it just look goddamn ridiculous, even Nolan knew this with his more realistic take) and I think Affleck can be great under an actual competent director, but just from BvS? I get more and more pissed off at how dumb, irrational and unbatman he actually was during most of it. Some good positive sides (warehouse scene, and the GLIMPSE we get about him infiltrating the Luthor's place) out of many negatives/non-positives seems a like a huge stretch.

    7. Kerk Lastnameless Avatar
      Kerk Lastnameless

That second paragraph in its entirety has nothing to do with Affleck's acting, but with his role, as was written.

For myself, I can state simple things -- he has the face of Bruce Wayne, as often drawn in the comics. He delivers anger and angst well. When I look at his facial expressions, I believe that he has those emotions. Also, the way he talks. There's always the same pace about his statements, which rightly suits Bruce in his old and bitter capacity.

      1. Kerk Lastnameless Avatar
        Kerk Lastnameless

That's fine, but again, this is more of a charge against how the character was written, as opposed to how he was delivered. If Affleck was told, "Be angry and frustrated all the time," then you can't fault him for not delivering a range of emotions. Just like you can't blame Cavill for only having one expression on his face.

        1. Kerk Lastnameless Avatar
          Kerk Lastnameless

You can say that. For me, he delivered what he was supposed to deliver, and he looked the part. Cloney, Kilmer, and even Keaton -- they didn't really look the part. That's enough for me to like him. Now, if he was unconvincing at delivering some lines or expressions, that would be a different story.

            Kerk Lastnamelessreplying to Kerk Lastnameless

You are attributing to me someone else's position. Like I said, I can only speak for my own impression of him, and I "liked" his acting. That's all. I don't think he is the best. If you're asking me, "How can any one think he is the best," I'm the wrong person to ask that question.

Nobody said he is the authority. His words do carty significant merit and weight considering he has voiced the character for 25 years. He studied and read much of the source material throughout all these years. So his words should be taken into consideration. And it still remains to be his opinion.

Yes, they evolved his character and gave us something different from the tired no-killing rule.

Most mocked, most praised. I couldn't care less. My opinions aren't define by what critics or lemmings like yourself think. I love the movie and it's my favorite DCEU movies to date.

Yes, "in your opinion", which again I don't care about. In MY opinion, he had every single hallmark of Batman and brought the best movie version yet.

I don't know. I thought his performance was comparible to Keaton and Bale. I think it has more to do with what the director wants of Batman. If they wanted Ben to act differently they would have told him so I'm sure. Plus Ben has no control over the script or what the producers end up putting in the final film. I definitely think they could have done more character development, but the movie was already so jam packed it was not possible. I think if anything they should have cut out the knightmare scene if they didn't plan on implementing it in a future film. I kind of assume they were planning on using it until they got the feeling a lot of people don't want to see Superman as a villain. Maybe they will address it in flashpoint. That would be neat. Maybe by flash changing the past Superman will become a villain in some alternate timeline.

Agree, as much as I liked Christopher Nolan's Batman, he just looked less and less like the comics as they progressed. I don't know how Snyder got Batman's neck area to be able to turn without wrinkling up or looking stiff as a board (as was the problem with the '89 outfit), and still not be a helmet like design (Dark Knight series). I hope they explain what material they're using.

I love that warehouse scene, it's fun as hell, but to say it's perfection when compared to Batman vs Swat team? The stakes, the danger involved in all of it? Cinematically, there's no comparison. It's different kind of fun in both scenes, but c'mon!

Yeah, nothing badass about saving multiple people from a fucking swat team, all without killing, taking the blame, and getting shot at from multiple targets, using all your reflexes, gadgets and fast-thinking to do so... One scene is kind of a lot more complex than the other. I love both, and that warehouse scene was undoubtedly a welcome fight scene in BvS, but it's like you're comparing Tomorrowland's mostly-CGI one shot introduction to tomorrowland to the Goodfellas' restaurant one shot scene.

      1. Schuyler Finley Avatar

But Batman isn't the only hero who doesn't kill. So the rule doesn't really make him special in that regard.

        1. OGmacrazy Avatar
          OGmacrazy

Sure, but what makes him not kill makes him special, what makes him refuse to kill criminals that have murdered dozens of people does. His iron will is his super power. This Batman, in his introduction, has shown to be weak-willed. Kind of a slap in the face.

          1. Schuyler Finley Avatar
            Schuyler Finleyreplying to OGmacrazy

No because there are other heroes who have similar reasons for not killing, and you even have characters like Doctor Who, who have bigger reasons for not killing.

Twenty years of constant fighting and losing allies. Normal people would've been broken after being in his shoes for only one year. The only reason why he hasn't been broken in the comics is because fans will riot. It's just like how some writers don't want Peter Parker to grow up.

          2. OGmacrazy Avatar
            OGmacrazyreplying to Schuyler Finley

Yeah, you're right. Hush, for example, would have been much better and more "realistic" if Batman had beaten Joker to death in that one scene, right?
Either way, you're wanting Batman's will to be taken away from him. It's ludicrous. It's literally his biggest asset, his biggest super power, and many times, his defining value.
If I want a Punisher story, like I said, I'm going to read a Punisher comic book or watch his show. Making him a murderer makes him yet another comic book super hero that has no value for Human Life, and it's one of his coolest attributes when you think about it. He's so cold, and looks so distant from everything, but he does believe in rehabilitation and he wants to see these criminals actually saving themselves. But no, make him a shithead drunk murderer that couldn't care less he is making other kids orphans just like he was.

          3. Schuyler Finley Avatar
            Schuyler Finleyreplying to OGmacrazy

No, I'm not. Just because his will was broken, doesn't mean that it can't be rebuilt. Hell, this makes him even more relatable to the villains that he seeks to rehabilitate. If he can crawl out of the abyss, even with the blood on his hands, then so can the other villains.

          4. OGmacrazy Avatar
            OGmacrazyreplying to Schuyler Finley

I see your point, but this Batman simply will never get out of this situation regarding his moral values. Regarding what he has done, and regarding his force of will. No one can say this Batman does everything in his power to keep order and keep his morals, because he has previously thrown it all in the garbage bin. There'll never be the possibility for a great Hush-type of storyline, for example, because this Batman will never be shocked at how far he is capable of going, because he has gone to the extreme. It's depressing in that way. This "deconstructing" characters is all fine and dandy to use in arguments until you realize that that same deconstruction actually impaired potential great storylines and actual characterization for the character itself. It's absolute bonkers to be happy about Batman having gone this far into the abyss and be a "huge" fan of the character.

          5. Schuyler Finley Avatar
            Schuyler Finleyreplying to OGmacrazy

But the character can still be pushed to the edge. You can still do a majority of his stories. He can still be tempted to kill.

I mean, we've already had previous Batmen who've killed in their respective films. And WB never said that Batfleck was gonna an exact representation of the current comic book Batman. And this characterization isn't like Miller's All-star Batman, so why should be upset at this?

          6. OGmacrazy Avatar
            OGmacrazyreplying to Schuyler Finley

"I mean, we've already had previous Batmen who've killed in their respective films" this is really not a valid argument.
Yes, they didn't say it was gonna be an exact representation, but it is Batman. Why not have him have his iron will and still be on the edge, cruel and tired of all this shit, without making him so irrational, trigger-happy and dumb? It really takes what's so special right out of the character. Also, I respect you, I really do, we can have actual decent arguments without going overboard with stupidity and insults, unlike many here, but writing "And this characterization isn't like Miller's All-star Batman, so why should be upset at this?" really goes against what you are trying to prove. You use probably the worst Batman of all time to defend this one. Just saying. In my opinion, I don't think you should go there.

          7. OGmacrazy Avatar
            OGmacrazyreplying to OGmacrazy

Sure, but the point here is they took that away from Batman. He may be "reborn" now, but now he is never ever going to be that shocked if he feels the need to do it again. Because he has been there, and OH BOY was he there. I think it would have been much better seeing a Batman actually pummeling these criminals almost to death, and have one or two scenes where he actually goes too far, but at the last minute decides to back away or something, ala Hush. Not only would it be comic accurate, it would literally convey the same message without ruining this core aspect of the character so much.

I'm late to the party...but giving my views on the entire conversations I've seen so far.

@LegendInMyMind:disqus and @OGmacrazy:disqus have actually relevant points, but to counter that - after the first film, slowly and slowly Batman as a character fell away in the Nolan trilogy. I understand why centering Affleck's take all on the warehouse scene is a little too much - but then, that was the first time I felt like I was seeing Batman on the live action scene. Straight out of Arkham series true, but fighting is atleast in the superhero mythos one of the key areas.

In my opinion, Bale was a horrible Batman and a okaish Bruce Wayne. And the third film really killed me. He retired? He then actually retired again? Bullshit - Batman never retires. Bruce is permanently tormented, the only reality that gave him a happy ending by marrying Selina was waved away as an alternate less cynical universe. That is his punishment for giving into the childish impulse to avenge his parents by his nonsensical crusade.

As for the poll, that seems more to be based on light Batman fans (not that much invested in the mythos as much as the Nolan trilogy) vs well read ones (who will go for Ben and Kevin, and even then 15 and 13 is no mean feat given how much Bale is the face of Batman sadly for this generation. Once again I loved the first two movies, just not the 'Batman' in them. And TDKR was abysmal).

Coming back to Ben. I agree - we are getting swept up too much in how much he looks like Bats as opposed to whether he can act as well....let's first get this out of the way. But he's a good actor and with better material has potential. While for Bale, it was a downward spiral I earnestly believe Ben if he stays in the role will get better. We shouldn't judge him right now on BvS (even those as many people are saying, he is considered the saving grace of the film). I can't call him the best live action Batman. In my opinion no one has captured the comic book batman properly yet...but I believe in Ben. I believe he can be my best live action Batman (something Bale failed to be despite him being one of my favorite actors...he could actually have been a good Joker in my opinion after American Pyscho). And that is all I will commit to.

    1. Avishek Avatar
      Avishek

I took DKR to be about Bruce learning that he could never stop being Batman and faking his own death to continue his legacy. Batman adapts. I won't go into the terrible sequel but another glimpse can be found in the arkham quadrilogy.

"Also, no, the Prewitt building finale in TDK is the definitive Batman fight scene"

I saw again. Yes I love the strategy element to it, and his use of gadgets. But did you see how he was fighting? Looked like a cartoon and worser than WWE standards - I was cringing every time he engaged them on a physical note.Nolan doesn't get physical choreography (that's not his strength agreed, cause I love his movies. He gets the themes so beautifully).

The takedown of the SWAT team in Batman year One is something I hope gets replicated. That is Bruce using his brains and brawn perfectly. Here I see brains being used while in BvS I saw brawn being used.

Nolan is a far better action director than Snyder - disputable. I feel Nolan has no idea how to do action. I wouldn't put him in the top ten. He knows how to create tension but to actually craft a proper fight scene. Even here he's using Fox and Gordon and 'detective mode' to break the flow and hide the poor choreography of the entire scene. Needs a lesson from John Wick and BvS there. And again, agree how beautifully he crafted the strategy of the entire process, but the execution is dreadful.

"was to return Gotham City from the criminals and the corrupt back into something resembling a responsibly governed society." - seriously? That's making Bruce's mission complete and that means Batman is ended. You have watched Batman Beyond I hope, what would have been problematic in going forward years at the end of the trilogy to an old Bruce navigating Terry McGinnis in busting a drug deal like he did at the start of the trilogy - ending with 'I'm Batman' quote. THAT would have been perfect. Batman's key concept is that it never ends, not some statue after that comic book like bomb escape (TDKR is struggling between being like the first two and being a comic book movie. It gets neither right).

I understand the Bimonthly thing but the trilogy could easily have been like this:
      Batman Begins - great
The Dark Knight - still great, but I wish the stupid romantic angle of a fridged woman wasn't there for Harvey and Bruce. Both are infinitely more complex characters than 'because of a woman' bullshit
The Dark Knight rises - I'm ok with using Bane. But I wan't a Batman as a vigilante again, being hunted. His body is broken? What training did he do - but then given what we saw in this and previous movies, I felt Ra's gave him the 'training wheels' routine.

I loved Nolan's interpretation of the Joker. Ra's, Harvey and Bane were all shadows of what they could have been. Scarecrow should have gotten more screentime (really? You misuse Cillian Murphy and expect to get away with it?)

There's a lot to love about the trilogy, I agree. The first movie is one of the best superhero origin stories I've seen (even though the gun thing is something that is as bad as the killing element in BvS), the second a brilliant retelling of Joker as an agent of chaos and the final a decent mismash of Knightfall and No Man's Land before collapsing entirely in the third half.

Agreed that Ben doesn't deserve the best Batman moniker yet. But again, Nolan used Batman and themes in the comics to craft an engaging storyline - but I feel by far its one of the worst adaptations of the superhero's world and ideals. Especially after the first part it totally falls away. I can only hope Matt Reeves is better at it, and I feel he will finally give us a good Batman movie
