'Shazam' to begin production in early 2018, but may not include The Rock

A Shazam rumor from earlier this week was just confirmed by The Hollywood Reporter. They say that Shazam is the next DC Comics movie that will go into production, and cameras are expected to start rolling in January or February 2018 for a targeted 2019 release.

The bad news is The Rock, who has been cast as Shazam villain Black Adam, may no longer be co-starring. Instead, The Rock will star in his own Black Adam movie.

David Sandberg, who was in talks earlier this year, is set to direct Shazam. The movie will come from New Line, Warner Bros.' sister company.

I don't think we are getting a Black Adam solo movie. I do think the Rock might appear in Shazam. If not he might be in Man of Steel 2.

Well Shazam was always scheduled for April 5, 2019.
Also it is being handled by New Line Cinema not Warner Bros.

The Rock info (that he wouldn't be in Shazam) broke when it came out he was getting his own movie. So not sure why people are surprised by it.

Shazam goes first, then they have a Black Adam movie told as a flashback, then the third of the trilogy has Shazam taking on Adam. Superman probably gets to throw a few punches along the way, too.

Captain Nazi, Blaze and Satanus, Doctor Sivana, Mister Mind, Sabbac, Mister Atom, King Kull, and Ibac.
I'm not sure which one they will choose. Mister Mind wouldn't fit the tone of the rest of the DCEU because he is a caterpillar looking thing. Blaze and Satanus' origins are tied to Lex Luthor they were created by him.

I do, Captain Marvel is great. We will be getting those movies as well. It's not really delaying other DC movies because it is being handled by New Line Cinema instead of Warner Bros. Pictures.

      I don't know the exact details but I believe they can no longer have the word Captain Marvel on the title of comics. However, they can still call him Captain Marvel in the comics. I think they stopped using the name in the comics because they didn't want to be associated with Marvel. In the Young Justice show he was called Captain Marvel. The title of the movie can't be called Captain Marvel but he can still be called Captain Marvel in the movie. It's a no brainer to do this. Imagine all the media attention the movie will get for obvious reasons. Also, it would be cool to respect the creators of the character and the character to still be called Captain Marvel in the movie.

Kinda glad The Rock ain't in this movie. I have grown really tired of his "acting" as of late. I seriously hope they get a director that can actually tell him to act for once, instead of playing the exact same character he does in almost every movie he's ever been in.

This film has been in development longer than most Post-JLA DCEU films. Shazam is a delayed picture, if anything.

It was moved into the DCEU last year but it´s not a pure WB production, even if New Line Cinema is a subsidiary.

I think this is the best thing to do and not put The Rock, in this movie, he is a big name and who can we put against him, that wont make The Rock overshadow the actor who will be playing shazam, it is almost impossible.

Setting up a Black Adam movie with the Rock on his own is a smart money move, it pretty much guarantees a Shazam sequel with the Rock hype and allows the first Shazam to go deep in the mythology of the character in the world building... I won't be surprised if Shazam will be in the vain of Spider-Man Homecoming with the teenage coming of age thing.

      Oh yeah, that sounds awesome. I will look more into him, I also love the fact that Johnson is playing him. I mean the guy looks identical to him, plus he has great acting chops, plus a strong cult like following. Its a complete win for the DCEU.

Well thats very counter-productive for the DCEU. It's a shared universe for a reason, and lets be honest - everyone has been waiting for a Shazam film more over than a Black Adam film. I'm a fan of the Rock, but it almost seems like the Black Adam solo film was a product of The Rock's ego.

My ideal choice for Captain Marvel is probably too old at this point but I would have LOVED to have seen Patrick Warburton play Shazam/Captain Marvel. Back about 10 years ago when they were first talking about the movie he would have been ideal.

Channing Tatum would be really good but Armie Hammer too. I just hope they don't go with another wrestler turned actor. Thinking outside the box, if Jason Seagel got ripped he'd be a good option.

I don't think they would be scheduling production with no script at all., and the article itself says who's directing (and don't forget that David Sandberg, the director, is also directing Annabelle: Creation, which is part of James Wan's Conjuring universe).

The problem is Rock can't stop saying yes to every script he sees. He signs up for project after project. Meanwhile WB is famous for dragging their deer with the DC stuff. By time WB is ready Rock is booked up for the next 3 years.

Seems really dumb. Shazam, sadly, doesn't really have the following to headline a movie franchise. It seemed like the only reason they wanted to do this, and the only way it was destined to be financially feasible, was The Rock. Now he's not in it. So if this comes out and fizzles we don't get the sequel and we never even get the chance to see Black Adam.

I was hoping for a Black Adam/Shazam movie where Dwayne Johnson would be the principal Antagonist. In my mind I was thinking about a situation where Black Adam has to choose a controversial but rightful decision for "saving the day" or his "ass", and Shazam (who is the "white" knight) with the help of Superman comes to stop Black Adam because of his shitty "moral" code (but we, the spectator do not appreciate Shazam and prefer Black Adam), at the end Black Adam "looses" but earn our hearts like Mister Freeze did in Batman the Animated Series.
