'The Batman' will be a "noir driven, detective version of Batman", says director Matt Reeves

Matt Reeves hasn't said much about The Batman during his War for the Planet of the Apes interviews, mostly because he hasn't started working on it yet. But in a new video interview with New Trailer Buzz, Reeves gave us the biggest clue yet as to what fans can expect from his Batman movie.

"There's a chance to do an almost noir driven, detective version of Batman that is point-of-view driven in a very very powerful way, that will hopefully connect you to what's going on inside of his head," Reeves said.

Absolutely love it. If I'm not mistaken, Ben has said something almost identical to this some time ago. Which kind of shows that him and Matt are on the same page

  He sure did! I remember he said if he our Warner were to make it it would have to be approached in the way The Maltese Falcon was. Red hearings and not so obvious yet right in your face obvious plot twists. Perfect for a Detective movie

I just really hope Leto is channeled in a certain way that his joker becomes the best one yet, and I think reeves can do that. This Batman is going to amazing I just can't wait

      Leto's joker was alright, but just alright. certainly not as defining as Ledger's work in the dark knight, or Hammil's voice work in TAS

  He doesn't even need a big role in this movie. Just have him in flashbacks, killing Jason and everyone will be overhyped for the sequel!

        They NEVER fully adapt one story, they combine elements, key scenes, and some characters. Like Nolan used No Mans Land and Legion with Bane for DKRises.

    I thought they were trying to use a villain we havent seen on film. Either way, the DCEU cant just put Joker in the corner (Nobody puts Joker in the corner! Lol). If they stick with Leto, they need to give us more context. He was too over the top to just have random cameos. I say F the past and give us another Batman v Joker movie....from Joker's point of view. I've written this idea here before.. Batman suprises his villains, but the audience isnt suprised cause we know he's there. What if we didnt? Joker doesnt see the Batcave (usually), so what if we didnt either?? It'd basically be a suspense movie about a deranged ganster who has some succesful crimes but always gets thwarted by Batman. He gets away sometimes, he gets put into Arkham sometimes, he breaks out sometimes. He's simultaneously obsessed with and haunted by Batman. And...it'd be rated R. Show me a DC fanwho wouldnt want to see that!

This is going to be amazing. As much as I love Batman finally interacting with other DC heroes and villains alike, I cannot wait to see a solo Batfleck film.
I really hope we get some news at Comic-Con next month.

Oh my God, they'll smother him with questions and the guy hasn't even started the project.
Which means he'll say anything and everything and when he finally approaches the board and decides to include this or exclude that everyone will already have his own preconception what they want and not what to surely expect... hence disappointments.

    Have we? First 1989, then 19 years later in 2008, then a handful of cameos in a non Batman movie in 2016. Meantime we had Ras, Catwoman, Riddler, Talia, a couple Two-Face's (Four-Face?? Lol), Penguin, Bane, Maroni/Falconi, plus Poison Ivy & Dr Freeze & lobotomy-Bane (but would rather forget that movie ever happened). I am just not tired of Joker yet. Three movies with Joker over a period of literally 28 years, and the last one was what? Ten minutes of screentime? I'm ready for another showdown, Batfleck v Joker, whether it be Leto or Jake Gyllenhaal, or Adrien Brody or Bradley Cooper or whoever. I'm not invested in Leto like I am with Ledger everytime I watch TDK.

      Penguin was in one movie, Dr Freeze one movie Talia one movie, and we still need a better version of Freeze, and also Riddler was one movie need an updated version we need Mad hatter too and do an inception style batman movie there is so much source matieral they can go for rather than the old regular batman vs joker movie, we can get the joker again in the third or fourth batman movie of Ben afflecks

      If you have read the batman count of owls story then that might give you an idea of how it might be. But yes a detective story from Bruce's perspective.

  Noir films usually have an urban setting, anti-hero characters, pessimistic stories, tragic endings and moral ambiguity.
  Vertigo, Chinatown, Taxi Driver and even Blade Runner have a noir theme.

  Ever since they revealed a Nightwing movie is in the works, I've been quietly wishing Deathstroke is relocated to that one. I know a lot of people will disagree, but I'd love to see him facing off against Dick Grayson, even more than against Batman. I'm just so used to him as a Titans villain and an antagonist to Dick that I think, since Nightwing is getting a solo movie, it feels right to have him as the villain. He has a longer history with Dick/the Titans than with Batman.

    I like Maginello vs some young thirty something Nightwing. I love Grayson spy angle they've started a few years ago till now. Would dig seeing Deathstroke vs Spyral vs Nightwing.

    ya see...I never cared for Slade as a Titans villain. Just not that interesting to me. Deathstroke is PERFECT as a batman villain in my eyes. Especially this version of Batman. Two older tortured souls going head to head in a raw battle of wits and pure physical prowess. its just too good. We could be in for the best fight scene in comic book movie history. I love Deathstroke as a character but as a villain I only really care to see him fight Batman to be perfectly honest. I know there are plenty who will disagree with that because of his lore, but until Batman gets his own Deathstroke(the new villain in All Star BAtman seems to have potential), I want Deathstroke as a Batman villain. Batman deserves a character like that

  Why not. In the game, Batman finds someone shot and he needs to figure out who shot him. That turned out to be Deadshot. Plenty of detective work went on there.

Sweetness! A brutal terrifying detective sounds great. I can already imagine some intellectual deciphering between the Bat and Alfred.
Add the Riddler for some unsolvable twists and turns.

My bugbear with all the Batman films has been we haven't seen a true representation of Batman’s legendary detection skills. Oh sure, he finds an antidote to Smilex here, solves a riddle there, on the way he gets fingerprints off a shattered bullet. But they’re all treated in an incidental way. We never get a sense this is the ‘World’s Greatest Detective’ at work.
Showcasing his detective skills has been the missing piece of the Batman cinematic puzzle (geddit?). If done right, this has the potential to be the greatest comicbook film let alone Batman film.

  I agree! The closest to any detective version of Bats on film was The Dark Knight, which was more of a crime movie anyway.

    Couldn't agree more. He wasn't dumb in the Trilogy, he just seemed to be more strategically minded, always thinking about the long play. That's great, realistic, but I've been wanting 'Sherlock Bats' for a while now.

        Was he dumb when he deduced Ra's Al-Ghul was going to use the rail system? Was he dumb when he sussed out the Joker's plan by the end? Was he dumb when he tracked down Selina Kyle?
        He's never going to be portrayed as an impervious sleuth where no-one gets the better of him. There always has to be a threat to Bats.

        Yeah, to a certain extent Bale's Batman wasn't the cleverest. But he did accomplish a lot by using his brain.
        He wouldn't of been able to defeat Joker if he weren't smart enough.

  I hope they move him to the Nightwing movie, to be honest. I'm much more used to seeing him connected to Dick and the Titans than to Batman, it would be awesome to see them facing against each other.

    I agree. If they're going for a noir-detective Batman movie, maybe Deathstroke wouldn't fit and the Nightwing movie needs a good villain, so Deathstroke would be perfect because he's important but not one of Batman main ones.
    Just imagine: Deathstroke cameo in JL, then main antagonist in Nightwing, and then, solo movie a few years later.

Get outta my head Matt!. I've said this for years that the best Batman stories are narrated by his internal dialog with himself. He doesn't speak much out loud but inside his head he tells us in detail what he's thinking. And the detective skills ,hacking,lockpicking, etc need to be up front and center.

Fingers crossed for the Court of Owls, or Dick Grayson's origin story. We need to see more detective/conspiracy-busting Bruce, but we also need to see his warm, loving side. :)
