Scott Snyder confirms All-Star Batman is ending as a monthly title; new formats coming soon

In a shocking bit of news, Scott Snyder has revealed that All-Star Batman will be ending as a monthly title after issue 14. Speaking with Comic Book Resources, Snyder confirms that while the title is ending as a monthly, the stories he planned to tell with artists like Paul Pope and Sean Gordon Murphy are still coming.

From the interview:

Essentially, I have started working on the arc with Sean [Murphy] already, and DC has been really excited about some new formats that they’re creating. Part of it is tied a lot of exciting editorial changes that they announced about a month ago. They’re creating bold, new initiatives – new lanes to drive in creatively – for creators to tell the kinds of stories like I was telling in All Star. They are artist-centric and a little bit left of center in ways that put the artist first, with a new artist format and with a new level of sophistication in terms of allowing for content that’s a bit more, how do I say this without spoiling stuff — adult, I guess.

Details about these format changes are scarce at this time, but I'm really intrigued. Is this move to a prestige format an indication of more OGNs and limited series? Good plan, if you ask me.

It's sad to see All-Star Batman go, as it's one of the most consistently interesting titles on DC's slate. If it paves the way for more creative freedom and inspired storytelling, though, then that's an acceptable silver lining. More as we hear it regarding these editorial and format changes too.

In the meantime, All-Star Batman continues its current arc "The Last Ally" in next week's issue 11.

I'm already not following this title, because I don't trust Snyder to satisfy with his endings, but the amount of weight his stuff still has at DC and for Batman really annoys me.

But if it's selling, DC is making the right choice. I just wish I was on board to enjoy it.

Yeah Snyder wrote some wierd Batman stories, like Gordon Batman, but he also went a little bit too far with Endgame. Batman series would need a real good writer. All the writers of the series are currently mediocre at best. So many don't get the characters right.

  Well, I really liked most of Superheavy with Gordon Batman, except that the pacing was way off and the ending was really bog standard. I loathe the Joker, so I was never going to like Endgame, but I really disliked how Batman seemed to agree with Joker that they were friends, and his last word was "Ha."
  My Batman would never think the world was absurd and laugh about it.

    As for me I hated Gordon Batman, because it made no sense. The point of Batman is, that not everyone can be him.
    It's been a while since I read Endgame, but that was meant to be sarcastic I would say. Joker is one of my favorite villains, but he was over the top in Snyders work. I also hate the scene, where the other villains helped Batman to save the city or that they decided to lighten a light for him, if Batman ever dies. In character none of them would ever do that. Most of them hate Batman and the city. They rather would have helped Joker or would have just watched. I am no fan of Snyders writing. There are worse though.

      Well...did you read all of Superheavy? Because that was the conclusion of the book, too. That Gordon being Batman was a noble failure, always doomed, because Batman is Batman.
      Though I think Dick is a good Batman too. :)
      That being said, I really enjoyed Jim getting the spotlight, cause I love Jim.
      I feel that the entire confrontation between Batman and Joker in Snyder's mind is too personal - I can't get into it. To me, Joker is a rabid dog that needs to be put down - and yes, I know all the arguements against it, but I simply don't enjoy reading stories where he shows up.

      No haven't read all of it, because I never like the idea of Gordon being Batman, but I don't like Gordon that much. So maybe that's a reason too, why I don't like the idea. For me only Bruce is the real Batman, Dick wasn't so bad, but I am always glad when it is back to normal and Bruce returns.
      Well everyone has villains he likes and villains he doesn't like. I think Joker and Batmans relationship is kind of personal, but like I said Snyder is often overdoing it. Did you only read stories with Joker New52 or also Pre52? His stories in Knightfall and No Mans Land are pretty good. So if you don't like Joker, do you enjoy the Arkham games, since he is in every game? Lol ( Apart from Arkham Underworld of course)

      That's a big part of why I liked it. Bruce is one my the last favorites (I like him, but I like most of his cast better than him) in the Batfamily, so I really like the idea of other people taking up the mantle. But Snyder's entire point was something I think you'd agree with - that Batman has to be Bruce. I personally disagree with it, but he made a pretty solid case for it.
      I've read NML, TKJ, his appearances in Birds of Prey, Last Laugh, War Crimes, and several others (interestingly, despite my hatred for War Crimes, I kinda liked Joker there, because his whole motivation was his anger at not being the one to kill Robin, Stephanie Brown, legitimizing my favorite Robin :). Oh, and Soft Targets in Gotham Central. I loathe him in almost all of these appearances because I don't find the kind of sadism and murder he commits entertaining. And not, I do not enjoy the Arkham games for that very reason. (Well that and they didn't give me a Cass or Steph Batgirl, despite having Oracle.)

    I interpreted that ending differently. It wasn't about world being absurd, but Batman announcing his triumph over the joker, and trying to use reverse psychology against joker making Joker think his idea that the world was absurd, is an absurd idea. That was what I remember, but i really need to reread Snyder's run and I haven't read Endgame in over a year.

      Also, how crazy is it to actually try to use psychology against Joker?

I really expected more with Allstar Batman, when it was first announced. Maybe they shouldn't cancel it, just write better stories.

There's a big difference between a comic getting canceled and a writer deciding not to do it anymore. All-Star Batman is one of the top selling comics every month, I highly doubt that DC cancelled it.

  Doesn't that normally decide the company and not the writer? However the stories could have been way better. Don't like what he did with Two Face. He basically became Hush.

I noticed that a few non-17+ DC books pushed the envelop a bit more than usual in the last 1 to 2 years. DKR III stood out the most (not in a good way but so did Miller´s ASB). Snyder also got to push the envelop more than most in his N52 work, so this development may be all on his own shoulders.

Marvel started doing this too when a few former Max books "returned" to the regular universe. Jessica Jones comes to mind.
