Producer talks 'Wonder Woman' development process and 'Justice League' reshoots

A few weeks ago, Collider caught up with DC Films producer Charles Roven to talk about Wonder Woman and even Justice League. Roven spent the beginning of the interview talking about the development process of Wonder Woman and revealed that the movie had more writers on it than any other movie he's been a part of. He goes on to explain how Geoff Johns and Patty Jenkins got involved, and why they didn't receive writing credit.

When it came to Justice League, Roven talked about the struggles of trying to get all of the actors together this summer for reshoots. Henry Cavill is off shooting the next Mission Impossible movie, Jason Momoa is in Australia shooting Aquaman, and Amy Adams is shooting a new movie of her own. Roven explained that the upcoming reshoots will be the first for Justice League (debunking previous rumors about reshoots), and said that they've also done some motion capture for CGI characters.

    Either way, you are making zero sense. Having many writers doesn't mean they all worked together. In fact, it ussually means there were re-writes out the ass, but they credit the past writers because they participated in the pre-production.
    But I guess knowing movies and how they work is a lot of trouble!

Haven't see the movie yet but a movie cannot be only charm based. I mean, MOS (my favourite DCEU movie) has great origin story, incredible visual effects, the best fight choreographies I've ever seen and Henry Cavill's very huge charisma but wasn't the success I hoped like Wonder Woman or any other DCEU movie.
I believe in Patty Jenkins but the investment on writers must have something to do. I mean look at Prison Break season 1, one of the best written tv shows, after the writers strike it had become the worst serie I have ever seen.

  Well, I still love Zack's movies. I love Man of Steel and have no problem with letting Pa Kent die in that way or snapping Zod's neck. I was really surprised (because I am a Superman TAS fanboy) but enjoyed it because it was logical after all, it was as realistic as life may be brutal.

it is obvious that both the box office and reviews sucess of WW is because they cloned the mcu style making a more generic lighter humorous movie targeted to a wider audience who has never read comic books, just like the mcu

U may not be familiar with that version but it isn't deviating from the source material. Lex Luther was straight out of superman birthright. Batman stratify out of the dark night returns. Pick up a comic book. The mcu is deviating more than anything else ego isn't peter quills father in any iteration of marvel. If u want to go in to deviations. U may call them humorless. I'm just happy they aren't semi comedies that apparently critics think all comicbook movies should be. To each his own but don't blatantly lie like that. U only end up looking uninformed.

Lmao that has to be a joke right? its called character building I would be pissed if superman just showed up and was this perfect guy right away that would boring as fuck. He showed up in man of steel finally after talking to his birth father and understanding that he can help the world and not be afraid of his gifts. In BVS he learns that with everything he does there is cause and effect not everyone is going to love him just because he is saving people, Which is where batman came in to that story. Batman broke his no kill rule if u even watched the movie because he was officially fed up, His robin got killed and now there is this alien that can move mountains u don't think he's a threat? Hell Chris terrio said man of steel, BVS, and Justice league is a three movie story arch building up Supermans character, Sorry he didnt show up and is perfect like Jesus. They didn't destroy his character shit they r building him up to be the best hero in DC comics like he always been.Now he had the quick rise to fame, The backlash of people and society not trusting him, adn he has even experienced death, He has experienced more in two movies than I can say for most characters in the mcu. Its the idiots like u that want instant gratification instead of letting a character grow and evolve over time. If he showed up perfect already there is no room to grow. And Batman's story arc in BVS is him becoming a hero again that is why at the end he says "I failed him in life, I won't Fail him in death," showing he turned over a new leaf.

Let's be honest people Justice League is probably going to be a tonally dissonant mess.

You've got Zack Snyder's original vision for the movie getting a retcon by Geoff Johns and God knows how many other writers. You've got a director who had a hard time characterizing three characters over the course of a three hour movie trying to characterize seven, in addition to soft retconning two of them after the backlash to the last movie.

Justice League is probably going to make everyone mad I just hope it's not so bad that we can't move past it.

With all due respect, none of what you stated is remotely true.
You (and many others) didn't like his characterizations, which is totally okay; but Zack didn't have a hard time with them - you (and many others) just didn't agree with his choices. The rumor mill is also not a good place to find "retconning" beliefs. If anyone directly involved with the production of Justice League has stated that Geoff and others are doing that, then I'll gladly retract my statement.
There are plenty of people who have enjoyed the DCEU so far, so stating that "Justice League is probably going to be a tonally dissonant mess" and that it is "probably going to make everyone mad" is not acknowledging the massive financial success of these movies, as well as the fact that a lot of people DO like them. It's merely branching off of the negative feedback that has clogged most discussions.

  Michael Bay's Transformers movies made millions and everyone loves to hate those movies. Financial success is not necessarily an indicator of the quality of a film.
  Look I don't want to crap on Zack, I like Man of Steel, I'm one of the handful of people who didn't hate Batman v Superman. But it's clear the majority of people don't like his beliefs in points of view on these characters.
  Bottom line all the evidence seems to point that they are just going to throw everything they ve built up so far out the window because of fan backlash. Personally I would rather get another grimdark somber depressing Zack Snyder movie then have DVC throw their entire Creative Vision out the window just because of fan backlash. It might not have been well received but I can at least respect them staying committed to their original vision.
  Sadly it looks like that's not going to happen.

      I'l just repeat what I've said before.
      The dark tone, violence, and nihilistic themes were NOT the biggest problems with Batman v Superman.
      Andrew Stanton said something during the production of Wall-E. " do you put a T-rex skeleton in the shape of a T-rex the way it was originally intended to be, or do you break the bones apart and glue them into the shape of a Stegosaurus?"
      Basically what he was saying is that while he was directing that movie. That they shouldn't try to turn the movie into something it's not just because it will supposedly Market better.
      Imagine if the first Thor movie wasn't well received, so they made the sequel to it Sin City/Watchmen level dark, violent, and nihilistic. That would cause serious tonal Whiplash and alienate EVERYONE.

      I mean, that doesn't make sense. You can have different tones for different characters, and justice league should never be about nihilistic themes and have a dark tone. That's simply not true. And what about Superman? Keep going with the themes of not knowing where you belong, not knowing what you're supposed to be, etc.? Or do you at least try to evolve past that?
      Stanton reffered to the making of a movie influencing the movie itself so it could market better. Fine. But that's not the same thing as changing the tone of a movie set in the same universe, especially since the tone has been an issue. Not the tone itself, but the way it's been executed. Grim dark is all fine and dandy except when you're doing it because you think it's cool or simply for grim dark's sake. That should never be the case.

      Everything Marvel related on the big screen has basically had the same upbeat, humorous, winking at the camera tone (the Netflix series nothwithstanding). Even the so-called 'Darker' movies (Winter Soldier, Civil War) haven't really been that dark or dealt with their themes in really meaningful ways (moreso in the case of Civil War, which undermined it's themes by having a villain instead of making the characters genuinely disagree with each other).
      DC started out trying to do something similar by making their movies tonally similar to each other but tried to take the themes and implications to places Marvel wouldn't, but unlike Marvel there was backlash. Which DC interpreted as the Tone and themes being the issue. Which wasn't the problem, it was the story being incoherent, the movies themes being presented with all the subtlety of a nuke, and some dumb storytelling choices based around making the visuals look cool instead of making the audience connect with the characters.
      There is room in this world for a darker, more serious, meditative Superhero Cinematic Universe. But due to them failing with the first two movies, DC is basically saying they shouldn't have even bothered trying and are settling for being Diet Marvel.
      Do I want the DCEU to lighten up? YES. But I want it to be done gradually, in a way that won't alienate everyone. If DC decides to make their movies exactly like Marvel in terms of tone, humor, themes, etc. They'll always be seen as in Marvels shadow and nobody will ever see them as a brand able to stand on their own separate from Marvel.

      Sure, I agree and it's one of the things I criticize about those movies the most. But the DCEU shouldn't follow the same exact model.
      Now, there's room for darker tones, but ALL DCEU movies having that tone? Absolutely wrong. So you're going to tell me a movie about The Flash should have the same tone as Batman v Superman?

      Bottom line. there is precedent for darker superhero stories featuring ALL of the characters. We don't need to make everything a big budget saturday morning cartoon just because DC misinterprets criticism.

      Hell, Man of Steel, while not light like the MCU, was definitely not dark on the levels of Batman v Superman.
      Variation and differentiation should be key in all of this.
      But I guess all of this is irrelevant, since Wonder Woman has already lightened things up immensely and Justice League will tell what follows.

    I was using financial success as an indicator that a "majority of people don't like his...characters" simply isn't true. You may just be a regular viewer of negative feedback (which can definitely mess with perception. I fell for it a while ago and had to seek out different forums).
    I'm still not clear on the "evidence" that would point to a retooling of Zack's intentions.

    I doubt that they're gonna go the MCU route in terms of "Jokes! Jokes everywhere!". WW has shown the perfect balance of handling jokes and creating tension. I wouldn't be surprised if Snyder copied that formula while doing JL.

      It seems to be on the exact same level as any average MCU movie, regarding jokes. Hope it proves me wrong, but I wouldn't be very hopeful about the humour being tasteful. It seems forced, and when something is forced, it won't work well.

    why do people think Justice League will be so different? Did you people forget that the movie literally started shooting like a few weeks after BvS came out? You cant drastically change anything in that amount of time. They also stated a number of times even before BvS came out that the DCEU moving forward would not be as dark as BvS was.

  It's not an entirely invalid interpretation of the character that people would hate him simply for existing. I said it before. If Superman existed in a world like ours, we would be 'p*ss terrified' of him. We may tolerate him to keep us safe from another Zod, but we would never see him as a hero. We'd see him as an existential threat.
  That's my biggest personal issue with BVS. he funeral at the end comes off as cheap and unearned. I find that with the attitude the human race (generally) had towards him, it'd be more likely that they'd send his remains to a military installation to dissect rather than give him a funeral.

    The whole point of the DCEU supposed to be an examination of how the world would react to things like Gods and Monsters actually existing in a semi realistic setting.
    Of course they should know character should be exempt from any kind of examination or story simply because "that's not the character you should be telling the story with".
    I really hope they don't throw everything out the window just because of fan backlash. I wanted to see what they could do with a Superman dealing with a world that hates him.
    The Superman you want to see it was great in the Silver age but we don't live in the series anymore we live in a world with things like Isis and North Korea, and corrupt politicians who play on the Public's prejudices. That's a world where a1940s version of Superman simply couldn't exist or at least he wouldn't last long.

Well considering the changes made post BvS resulted in Wonder Woman doing great not only at the box office but also critically I truly believe Justice League will be just fine. Let's not forget it was Zack Snyder who brought in Gal Gadot and made her a bright spot in BvS before her solo film so he did great with her as for Batman and Superman that is a matter of a opinion these characters get changed in the comics constantly it's all a matter of who is writing them. WB/DC are on the right track and the proof is right in front of our eyes with how well Wonder Woman is doing so relax and enjoy the ride.

I can't agree at all with the pessimism about JL here. To me MoS and BvS are monumental films, and I expect this film to even better than those two--which is saying a lot. (I love that MoS and BvS are risk-taking, controversial, and even provocative in their approach.) Everything has reportedly proceeded swimmingly with this production. The actors all looked like they had a blast filming it.
The only real concern is whether WB will pressure Joss Whedon into changing more than they're indicating. But I really don't think that will be the case. It's reportedly just a small handful of scenes that Whedon will be writing and shooting. The direction for those scenes has already been set forth by Zack and Joss will be fulfilling his vision, and presumably consulting with Zack along the way.
I'm expecting JL to be a better film than WW. All around. And I really like WW.

  Wonder Woman was a prequel, so they didn't have to address or retcon any of the plot points in any of the previous movies. So already it was going to be better received regardless. Aside from being consulted on the script and casting Gal. Zack and Goyer's involvement wasn't as prominent as it was for BVS and MOS.
  As for justice league? Geoff Johns was rewriting the script as they were filming, which is never a good sign for any film, let alone something that is supposed to introduce the world to all of these new characters. They're retconning the decisions they made in the previous movie as it applies to Batman, Superman, and Lex. Not to mention they're probably going to throw the plot elements that actually had potential to be interesting out the window because of the backlash to them (the vision of the Evil Superman future, the Codex in Superman's DNA, etc.)
  What's worse than making a movie that nobody likes is not commiting to your original vision because you have studio execs and millions of angry fans breathing down your neck if you so much as have Superman be anything but a campy relic from the 1940's.

      Alright so Mark Forbes is a credible source. But I would avoid leaping to too many conclusions about what Johns' and Afflecks' contributions have actually been to the script.
      Whatever input Affleck may have had to JL is probably no more, since it looks like his own script for The Batman is reportedly getting a page one rewrite since Matt Reeves took over the project.
      Johns coming in to bring more "hope and optimisim" to the script? I would imagine so. That hardly means the story will be a disjointed mess, though. If you want to be cynical about it feel free. You may even end up being right. But I'm not sure what good it does for any of us to assume that the movie is going to be bad.

  meh WW was overrated as a film but the character is definately cool. I think the problem for people is they have so many preconceived notions of what batman and superman should be based on previous incarnations they couldn't accept a different take on them. WW tho hasn't been seen in film until now and people are way more open to this version of her because its their first interaction with her. Zack came up with this incarnation of WW and cast her amazingly imo.

    Yeah, really good insight there. It goes to the project that Zack undertook to place Superman and Batman in something resembling our real world to see what would happen. Like if they actually existed what would that look like? And honestly, it might not be unicorns and rainbows. It amazes me that some fans wanted it to be that.
    There are a lot of fans out there that conceive the characters one-dimensionally, as sort of timeless, static, flawless paragons. Snyder himself said that some fans were angry that he "grew up" Superman by putting him into a world where perfect solutions actually never happen and we're all flawed. (That's real life.)
    Snyder reads the comics and he has plucked what he likes from them to tell his own story. But he does know the history of Batman and Superman from the comics. He is just putting them in our real world. He commented once that fans that complain he doesn't understand the character apparently haven't read all the comics in which Superman does actually become very twisted and dark. I mean, look at all the Silver Age comics in which Superman's core personality and character are radically changed by red Kryptonite! Yes, he always returns by the end to his true virtuous self. But in MoS and BvS we have him in a developmental arc that will resolve presumably in his rebirth/return in JL.
    In order for Superman to step securely into his superhero role, I think he will have to come to terms that he cannot be all things to all people (in both MoS and BvS everyone else is trying to define his identity thus far, imposing it upon him).
    But anyway this is to me much more interesting than the candy-assed Donner/Reeve Superman of decades past.

Well said, good sir/madam. Unfortunately, the Snyder fanboys will retaliate with insults and obscenities. I couldn't agree with your post more. BvS was a disaster due to bad writing, poor characters, too many plots, bloated time, and just being completely bleak. I would strongly argue that WW was so wildly well-received due to having color, humor, fewer characters, and a sense of hope. And no course no one should give a shit that she kills because she doesn't have an established no-kill MO nor is she familiar with the laws of the world outside of Themyscira. I'm not opposed to Batman killing in a situation where he's basically forced (eg. saving Martha Kent) but he was just a murderer in BvS. Combine that with a Superman that was just a superpowered Batman and there was no reason to give a crap about the characters.
The next DCEU movie I have FULL faith in is Batgirl. Whedon obviously knows how to make a STRONG female lead with a good supporting cast.

  In a world divided by politics, religion etc. Praising a Superhero movie just because it 'inspires hope' is a huge mistake. Superhero movies SHOULD try to address the darker issues of humanity without feeling the need to ignore them to avoid alienating the audience. What's wrong with having a Superhero deal with a serious issue?
  I would have preferred TEN more dark and depressing DC movies than see them throw the dark tone out the window.

    There were two previews attached to WW when I saw it Thursday: Thor and Spider-man. I hadn't seen the Thor one and was thinking "this looks interesting" when they ruined it with "Hey! It's my friend from work!" W.T.F? Give me a movie that still has me thinking about its theological symbolism (hint: it goes way beyond a simple "Superman=Jesus") 15 months later over that foolishness any day.

    Wow did you spin what I said. If you would look at other comments and articles, you'll see that I've said WW has been the only good DCEU movie to date. Nor did I say only a man can make a good movie.

a lot of pessimism here...to be perfectly honest, there are actually quite a few things that would suggest Justice League will be more favorably received than BvS. I really don't think it will be nearly as controversial as BvS was. At the very least I think it will do about as well as Man of Steel did critically. If anything slightly better. But the movie has a lot going for it. I mean first of all, Chris Terrio(who certainly seems to be talented considering he did Argo) wrote the script from scratch. No David Goyer. Just Terrio. Jeremy Irons was also talking about how the JL script is a lot tighter/shorter and not nearly as complicated as BvS was with all of its subplots and convoluted character motives. We pretty much already know what Steppenwolf's game is. He wants the motherboxes(and possibly the Codex as well). Speaking of Steppenwolf, it would seem we won't have another controversial (and what many would describe as "cringey") villain portrayal. I suspect he will be more in line with general Zod from Man of Steel. Then there is the fact that we will no longer have any deconstructed heroes, and on top of everything we have some added levity/humor. There also seems to be a lot more action as opposed to reserving it all for the third act. Almost everything that many people had problems with in BvS do not appear to be present in Justice League. The only remaining factor is Zack Snyder. And thats what makes people nervous. Personally I am a fan of Zack. If Warner Brothers doesn't make him cut out a bunch of content I think the movie will be fine.

So there won't be an Ultimate Amazonian Edition on Blu-ray?! Yes!😄 I'm very proud of the internet, for "allowing" Wonder Woman to kill, without online backlash. The Batman and Superman controversies were so weird. I guess the likability of the hero, and the movie, along with enough quality humor, is what makes the difference. But it's important that fans evolve WITH the characters, when they're adapated to the big screen.

It's more that there are so many movies coming that he couldn't produce all of them. And I wouldn't call him a "suit with no heart," but the fact is that he's in the middle of it. If the director's in charge of the creative, the producers are in charge of making sure that everything is planned out and ready for the creative to be successful, AND making sure that the budget is kept to. I don't know how many other producers (with the p.g.a. stamp on their names in the film, not just vanity credits) there are on JL, but remember that Debbie was also doing that and she left along with Zack, so Roven has that much more work trying to schedule actors, crew and locations to get these reshoots done.

Remember when that Collider/Schmoes Know reporter said Wonder Woman was "a mess"? She apparently had a "DC insider" that saw the movie several months ago. Patty Jenkins just said the claims were false (the movie wasn't even completed at the time).
I wonder if the reporter will post a retraction.

yes but the killing of Lord really put Diana down a very dark path and created a huge rift between her, Batman and Superman. Not to mention it was one of the things that convinced Kal-L that these versions of DCs heroes are unworthy heroes.
So I am not really sure that this is something you wanna bring up in this particular conversation. The death of Lord is a huge stain on Wonder Womans history.

I'm not an expert on WW lore but do people have problems with her killing ? I don't because she's a warrior so I don't see her as peaceful as Superman. I was even a bit annoyed that she didn't use her sword against german soldiers.

  Oh ok glad to have that cleared. I may be wrong but what I recall is her holding the sword and shield but mostly using the shield. Even at one time she grabs the sword by the blade and knocks out a soldier with the hilt. When I say "not using the sword" I mean not slashing nor stabbing. But I have nothing against that, I just found it peculiar.

Why can't JL just be a natural progression of the DCEU? I mean sure there were changes made along the way, things were tweaked, rewritten, and moved around, but couldn't this have been the plan the whole time?
A lot of people wanted humor, a taste of humor was given, and still people are upset...about a movie that's not even out yet. For people say it's forced? Eh.....that's not an accurate assessment. JL will be funny because there are funny characters in it and it will still be cohesive with MoS and BvS. Honestly we all know these characters and love them. If you don the like it, you can always treat it like an Elseworld story. Or just another Multiverse.
I like the Trinity we have here, a very cynical Batman who, after years of essentially failing at his mission, becomes recommitted to that mission after seeing the good done by Superman and Wonder Woman, a Superman who is willing to do the right thing no matter the personal cost or what anyone thinks of him, and a Wonder Woman who is hopeful and loving, even when she has seen the worst people have to offer.

And come on, "I hear you talk to fish," is exactly the kind of joke Batman would make.
