'Wonder Woman' expected to open to over $95 million this weekend

A few weeks ago, early estimates said that Wonder Woman would make around $65 million in its first opening weekend. Well, after the glowing reviews that were released earlier this week, that number has gone way up!

The Hollywood Reporter says that Wonder Woman is now tracking for a $95 million or more box office debut in North America.

Surprisingly, Warner Bros. is downplaying that number and is expecting just $65-$70 million. Perhaps that's so they can say Wonder Woman exceeded their expectations, because I believe closer to $100 million is a more accurate estimate based on all the positive buzz.

Wonder Woman opens in select theaters tonight, and everywhere tomorrow, June 2nd.

Yep WB is definitely low bawling they did the same with BvS I remember them saying that they were expecting the movie to debut at $120M-140M dom and 300-350M WW it ended up debuting at $166M and $420M WW.
Wonder Woman opening at $100M would be huge win and I expected the movie to have legs not only because of the reviews but also because of it fresh factor in a month full of sequels & reboot.
The GP at least stateside is clearly getting tired of endless sequels and reboots and unless they have great reviews they don't support it. So just like Alien and Pirates movies like Transformers and Despicable me 3 will debut at #1 but quickly fall off while Wondy will hang around in the top five for a while. Anyway can't wait to finally see it today.

  Despicable Me 3 is definitely going to bank serious money. That franchise is unstoppable right now, unfortunately. And Transformers is definitely going to at least steal international business from Wonder Woman. It's huge in China.

        Really? It was so lazily produced (just look up how Illumination "saves" money when making movies). All of their movies feel cheap, have almost zero characterization and are the absolute worst when it comes to the current top three animation studios, by a landslide (the other two being Dreamworks and Pixar).
        Cookie-cutter stories and characters in animated movies really don't do it for me anymore. Pixar has spoiled me in terms of animated movies, as well as most of Disney's stuff and some great dreamworks movies.

        I think it has most of all to do with the animation itself. Compare their models to Pixars -- you'll notice that Illumination's and Dreamworks's character models tend to have small eyes on humongous heads, and bodies tend to have sharp edges at the joints, while Pixar's characters are all slick and fussy. This is important for creating the right sensation of comfort in the viewers.

        Nothing to do with that. They literally re-use models, in an attempt to spend less money, I shit you not. Just look up "I Hate Sing" and you'll get an explanation of their fucking shitty process. It's lazy and awful and makes their movies look more generic, and uglier.

        I dont care how it was produced, i care if i enjoyed the movie or not. I watched it with my 4 year old daughter and it was fun for both of us. Did you like Moana? i personally thought Moana was over hyped.

        Haven't gotten around to it yet. But frankly, I wish I saw that one instead of Sing. It was just so boring, cliched and had nothing going for it, at least in my opinion. It was like I was watching every other generic animated movie ever released, only with even more generic characters and singing.

        that's how I felt about secret life of pets but I thought sings "multiple leads" worked in its favor, giving you just enough to care enough... like no backstories or melodrama just different characters all wanting the same goal to show their loved ones what they could do but all indifferent scenarios, I particularly liked the gorilla/father plot thread, the theater manager... but I could be biased being a musician who can relate to not being able to "be heard" as well as being a father because another main thread sing was family... I definitely think illumination is more miss than hit so I didn't have any expectation about sing... but if you have a decent tv I would recommend watching sing just for eye candy alone... the use of focus, blur, shadows etc are worth the watch alone but... to each their own 😉

        Well, Life of Pets did kind of have multiple leads, in a Toy Story rip off kind of way. It was incredibly generic and mediocre as well. Frankly, between the two, I can't say which one is more forgettable.
        And frankly, visually, I found it extremely dull. The character models were all unimpressive and all looked the exact same, inside the same species, and the plot I guess it was nice and relatable to some, like yourself, but it is exactly what these type of producers want: the most type of vague and "relatable" storylines so that people can attach themselves more to it, even though it doesn't deserve so. I respect your opinion, I simply am beginning to hate Illumination as a movie making company.

It is going to open comfortably over 100 million, I said this before the reviews, I still believe it. The question to me is how much more than 100 million, I think 115 million is achievable.

I think one of the reasons the predictions have been low is that those predictions tend to focus on the younger crowds hence most of their data relate to online activities. They don't take into account the 40+years old who are not that active online I mean look at what happened with Jurassic World the people that help that movie broke records were not the 15-20 crowd they were the eighty and ninety babies that grew up on it and had nostalgia. and Wonder Woman has that nostalgia factor maybe not as big as a Jurassic World but it's definitely there.

      I know BvS has a lot of fans, but after paying for the theatrical cut for myself and a bunch of friends out of excitement, I can't give money back to a DCEU film until I think things are on the right track.

Well god damn shit. I was worried after all these reviews and rotten tomato score that they had caved and put out a generic movie to appease the masses. Damn it.
Oh well.. they can't take away my MoS and BvS that's for sure.

    That being said, all I keep reading is how light hearted this --> WOLRD WAR 1 <-- era movie is and how much comedy is in it. That is what I watch marvel movies for. I don't need DC to follow suit but yet here we are.

      There is a difference between a movie having humour in it or it being a comedy, Wonder Woman has humour in it it is not a comedy. The humour never takes you out of the moment, it is natural to the plot and situations the characters find themselves in. It is light hearted because the character of Wonder Woman is driven by love, the situation they find themselves in is not light hearted itself. There is literally several scenes that remind you of the lost and horrors of World War One, without to much blood and gore given its rating.

    Just so you know Ironman 1, Avengers 1 and Guardians 1 (haven yet to see the volume 2) are some of my favorite superhero movies ever but not everything has to be the same. MoS was phenomenal and BvS was great.

    Ah I see. First 3 films of each. A few caveats though 1) pre avengers and post avengers are 2 different eras, even the dceu has benefited from said film 2) bearing in mind that avengers affected both sides, the averages are close, 762.2 for the dceu, 780.9 for the mcu. Mcu may have some in the 500's and below, but it also has some in the 6-800's, not to mention 4 over a billion. 3) gotg 2 just passed the old average, which was right around gotg 1's box office. Spiderman and Thor may bring it up or down. JL will certainly raise dceu's average. But will Wonder Woman? 760 is high for a summer movie. If it brings the average down tho, JL will surely bring it up. Say ww makes 700 and JL 900. That would make the average 777.3 which is just under MCU's current average. But gotg 2 is still in theaters. Spiderman 2 has iron man. And tho JL will cut off Thor's legs, Thor will also still be in theaters against JL. The mcu average will likely stay ahead of the dceu average.

Will whatever, Aquaman I guess, top iron man 3? Etc. I like averages more. As to avengers affecting the dceu negatively, please elaborate.

        I think taking averages will be more fair starting from Aquaman (post-Justice League). I mean, look at the MCU's (relatively) weak box office for solo movies pre-Avengers.
        The Avengers grossed more money than any other Superhero film and a LOT of people watched it. That benefitted the MCU because their fanbase grew tremendously. The MCU set the tone for Superhero movies (unfortunately). Now fans, general audiences and critics alike want light-hearted movies with a lot of jokes, as if that's a necessity (Keep in mind that Logan is an exception for many reasons here) in this genre.
        MoS was different in its tone and a lot of other aspects. It was considered a "dark" movie, but it wasn't. Audiences and critics want their superhero films to be more like what Marvel pumps out, and that's unfortunate.

      you have to draw the line somewhere and the obvious and best place to do it is comparing film by film. i certainly see your point on the benefits of a post avengers era but that in no way guarantees a comic book movies success... will a studio be more likely to produce a comic book movie post avengers? definitely. But i could also argue that Marvel movies would be no where today if it wasn't for the success of DC's Superman with Reeves and Batman 89' so the door of "if it wasnt for this or for that" swings both ways for Marvel and DC.

  They are "just" comic characters; subject to constant evolution, for more signs. They are not untouchable and immutable sacred totems. Accepting this fact, I sincerely believe that people could have any chance of enjoying what, leaving sacred principles aside, can be a good, even a great movie.

    Pretending that someone like Batman doesn't kill anyone when he is "on duty" seems to me one of the biggest insults to the intelligence in this type of stories. My margin for suspending disbelief may be lower than normal; I don't know. And It's something we've seen in practically every bat movie. Batffleck may be the one in more brutal ways, however he never embraced the sadistic nature of Tim Burton's Batman. I could only agree with you if you could assure me that that character has never violated that rule. If you can not, then you don't want to see that character but a certain conception of it. That is to say, there is a Batman, there in the pages of many comics, that you simply reject.
    Regarding the division of the audience I quite agree with Woody Allen: "I don’t know the key to success, but I know that the key to failure is trying to please everybody".

      Batman has not killed since like the 60's, and not killing is key to his character more than almost any other superhero.
      You won't find an example of batman killing deliberately in any comics from the last 50 years. talking about canon but pretty sure it applies to elseworlds comics as well.
      It's only in the movies he kills.

        Nolan set up a no kill rule with Batman and proceeded to ignore it throughout the entire trilogy. I would say not saving Ras Agul is WORSE than machine gunning a bunch of random henchmen due to the context of the story. BvS batman was not afraid to cross that line and was specifcally written to have lost his morals. Batman Begins explicitly structures Batman with the no kill rule and ignores it not just with random henchmen (you dont think Bruce didnt kill some people in the massive temple he destroyed by his DIRECT actions? was that really "necessary my friend"?) but with RA'S AL GHULE himself! regardless of what you say, choosing to not save someone IS essentially killing them! do you think if your friend was about to fall off a cliff and was barely hanging on and you were standing there and could save them but chose not to, you would not be held responsible at all? lets add a witness (we as an audience are the witness when it comes to film) to that scenario who actually saw you say "im not going to kill you but i dont have to save you" as you walk away, your friend falls to his death etc... and then its just all good? lmfao. so tell me....         Please tell me where it's stated in the film exactly how much weight the grappling gun AND the cape? grappling gun - 350 lbs... the cape? not known... except for the fact that it slowed down the weight of Bruce and Rachel falling off the building... let's say Batman is 200 lbs and a 150 lb Rachel... so we know the cape can easily handle 150 lbs by itself as it acts as a glider to Batman... 350 lbs of max weight from the grappling hook plus 150 lbs of max weight from the cape equals AT LEAST 500lbs of weight they can sustain together... it's safe to assume that the combined weight of ras al ghule and Batman is under 500 lbs... so knowing this from we is featured in the films we can infer that it WAS possbike to save Ras al ghule. Oh and I'm case you think I'm bullshit I'll just continue citing my sources...

All i have done is provide actual evidence within the context of the film and the actual laws we and presumably they (the films) that it was indeed possible to save Ra's and the fact the batman has killed in every live action adaptation since batman 89' but just keep using your imagination to convince yourself that what you believe is true because when it comes to Batman you are not a fan... you are a Batman narcissist.

You keep calling me a BvS fanboy... so that must mean i can't acknowledge some or any of the films flaws? hmm... the martha scene could have been handled with more care, should have had more time between killing each other vs becoming best pals. Doomsday should have never been revealed in marketing and i believe would have been MUCH more effective if it was a complete surprise and less of a backlash from fans. is it a perfect story? no, i dont call anything perfect. could the execution of certain scenes have been handled better? absolutely! so that basically just blew your "BvS" fanboy theory out of the water. you are just not willing to admit that Batman has killed on film(never argued about comics)... a lot and whether you like it or not Batman on film is more universally known than Batman in the comics. you can not argue that statement. BvS was the first movie to actually address Batman crossing that line (which he has crossed in every movie)and was the basis of Batmans character arc in the film. At least BvS was consistent with the version of Batman and story of Batman that they were trying to tell.

        I would not call the handling of BvS mistakes but risks that more or less did not pay off universally because from a technical standpoint 99% of the film was flawless in execution other than the Martha scene. They did however pay off for me because it was totally new take on Batman and i would agree with you on batman killing in BvS IF the story did not specifically address it but... it does. This Batmans entire arc so far is the fall from grace and the turning point (bvs) with Justice League being his true return to form and a redemption of sorts. What Ive noticed and love about the DCEU is that character development is being formed across multiple movies and not just the typical hero is made, fights the bad guy, saves the day. Each film has had consequences and i believe that once Snyder's trilogy comes full circle with Justice League we will be given the Batman film that will please everyone by Matt Reeves and co... and not to take away from Justice League because Snyder will already provide a Batman that is the one YOU want, the completion of Batmans 2 film story , Wonder Womans 2 film story arc, and Supermans 3 film story arc, but just saying because its team film and not a solo batman film... i dont understand being "checked out on that one until Snyder left production" because for everything you didnt like about Snyders soon to be trilogy of films he is also credited for a majority of the good especially now with the release of Wonder Woman... and not to take away from Patty Jenkins but Snyder cast Gadot as WW wayyy back then... the guy deserves credit... even if that credit is divisive.

        Was not talking about the narrative I said from a technical aspect. there is a point to all the dream sequences... to show Batman is afraid. The knightmare scene was a vision into an alternate future where superman becomes a dictator over humanity, assisting darkseid...which is batmans "worst nightmare" (he is shown to be woken up by the flash using the speed force to communicate inthe past)... and your talking about thugs with weapons vs the Batman... vigilante in Gotham for twenty plus years who superman sees as the one in the wrong... which is why superman stopped Batman and wrecked the batmobile instead of luthers thugs. Batman shot the tracking device as a failsafe to his preferred method of fucking shit up... "he is angry and he is hunting"...All of this is in the UC. I thought the JL members could have been handled better but that's the point of a tent pole film is to tease future movies.

        I think all this is pointless. The Batman says that he doesn't want to save him. Batman always saved people in the most impossible situations or at least tried, but that was obvious not the case.

        It is weird because I still don't know why Batman chose not to save Ra's al Ghul's and in the Dark Knight decided to save the Joker. He says " I don't kill you but I don't have to save you". So why did save the Joker after all he has done?
        There are a lot of contradictions in Nolan's Batman, although contradiction is something normal in humans.
        By the way, it is stupid to say that Batman would never kill someone even if at one point decided to adopt that as a rule. First, in those type of fights, the probability of making involuntary casualties is very high. Second, people can break promisses in the act or simply revoke the promise they made. In Batman case, he is not a real person or written by just one artist which would bring much more congruence to the character.He is written by several writers and every decision he does come from differents perspectives about the character.

http://www.boxofficemojo.co... set the budget at 149 mil. Meaning that this is now officially the most expensive female directed film. Every single thing Jenkins directed (mostly tv work) combined can´t even come close to that number, while her single other feature film cost 8 mil.
Good on WB for fining a talent outside of the box.

Was there ever a female directed (cinematic) superhero film people liked? Tank Girl gained a clut following but it flopped and is hardly beloved. Dito for the somewhat better Punisher: War Zone.
Jenkins may set a first, as looking at the wiki list showed a barren wasteland.
This genre really needs more women... so show up in droves, key?

hm Wonder Woman fell 4 % overnight on RT. Its still at a mighty 93 % but I hope it doesnt fall much further. It would be a shame if the movie would not be in the elite 90 % club of superherofilms. So far there are actually only 11 Marvel/DC films who have scored at least 90 % on RT:
Superman (1978) 93 %
Spider-Man 2 (2004) 93 %
Iron Man (2008) 94 %
The Dark Knight (2008) 94 %
The Avengers (2012) 92 %
Guardians of the Galaxy (2014) 91 %
X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014) 91 %
Captain America: Civil War (2016) 90 %
Doctor Strange (2016) 90 %
Logan (2017) 92 %
Wonder Woman (2017) 93 %
This means WW is only the 3rd DC movie ever to cross the 90 % mark at RT. It also means that 2008 was the critically best year so far with both of the most highly rated films (Iron Man and the Dark Knight) coming out in that year. 2014 was a pretty good year too with two 90 % films and one who only barely missed the 90 % (Cap: Winter Soldier has 89 %).
Sadly DC ruined the quota for 2016 with their critically maligned BvS and SS as Marvel delivered two 90 % movies that year and Fox killed it with Deadpool (84 %). However Fox also released the critically maligned Apocalypse, which was the worst received X-movie since Origins.
2017 so far looks excellent with the first movie (Logan) a 92 % masterpiece and now Wonder Woman also seems to be one of the best movies of the genre. Lets hope this trend can continue all the way through 2017 and that Spider-Man, Thor and most of all Justice League can deliver the same amount of quality and receive their hopefully well deserved 90 % score.
Always remember - anyone who wishes for any Marvel or Dc movie to fail only hurts the superhero genre and roots against its prosperity.

The Gods might be smiling down on WONDER WOMAN. Not only is it fun, rewatchable and will have good legs, but it will also take advantage of poorly performing competition thus far.
But this film won't pass a billion. No way. I'm going to say USD800million worldwide tops, and that's only if THE MUMMY doesn't perform well as expected.
