Today is Henry Cavill's 34th birthday, and Justice League director Zack Snyder has taken to Vero to celebrate.
Snyder posted an old photo of himself with Cavill in his Superman suit from the set of Man of Steel. "Happy birthday to my friend Henry, you help me accomplish wonders," he wrote.

I expressed, in another thread, my feelings with Cavill, but I'd like to repeat them here.
When I was growing up, Reeve as Superman was who I wanted to be. As an adult, having gone through a lot of difficulty in various places, Cavill portrayed a much more relatable Superman to me. I had much more specific emotional attachment to his version.
I will never deny Reeve's influence on me as a kid, but I really appreciate what Cavill has done with the character. It's a beautifully human interpretation, in my opinion.
Yes... I've heard a lot of gripes that a lot of things are "reactionary storytelling" but unless you live in bubble your entire life... Shit happens... and it's the way we REACT and LEARN from a situation that ultimately determines what kind of man/woman we are! cavil and Snyder's portrayal is about as closely human as it can be... and all the more reason why I love it and enjoy it so much.

Watch BvS carefully and you'll realize that Superman just reacts to the plot and doesn't make almost any decisions, therefore making him a bland character to the vast majority of the audience. Not really surprising, after all, it is through one's actions and decisions that we make our judgements.

But he did make choices. He chose to nit kill Batman. He chose to save people. He chose to not hang the cape up.
"He chose to nit kill Batman." He chooses to throw him around instead of asking for help, showing that for him, keep punching Batman at that moment mattered more than saving his own mother, taking all of the weight out of the scene afterwards when he's worried about her again. Also killing is something Superman just never does, so this is not a valid choice, it doesn't add anything to the character (adds to the fact that he is stupid and got himself into that situation by going forward and punching Batman nonsensically) and doesn't defy any of the audience expectations.
"He chose to save people." With a dead person's face while doing it... But ok, it counts as saving, still doesn't count as a valid choice. Adds nothing to the character and again, doesn't defy any expectations. Is just what you would expect from Superman, but poorly executed.
"He chose to not hang the cape up." Because the plot needed Superman again, remember? Lois was falling off a building and he's the only person that has a tracker embedded in her head (I assume so, since he couldn't find his mom that was in the same city a couple minutes later) and that can fly, so it only made sense for him to react to the plot and come back as Supes, didn't add anything to the character.

In case you didn't notice, Superman's very first action was to try and tell Batman about Luthor's plan, but when he didn't listen, Superman tried to use a bit of force without killing him. "Stay down. If I wanted it, you'd be dead already.' It was only after he was weakened by kryptonite that he realised he had no other choice but to fight for his mother's life.

Superman lost his hope and secluded himself, but later decided to come back because he's a good person, and you say it "didn't add anything to the character" and because the plot needed it? You could use that weak, baseless argument for literally every scene in any movie. Newsflash! Plots are made up for every movie, they're not real.

Except Martha was in Gotham and not in the "same city". Lois fell from top of the tallest building in Metropolis, and did so while screaming so Superman could hear her.

You really think he tried? I think he spent too much time with the "listen to me"'s and "you don't understand"'s instead of just saying saying "Lex has my mom and he wants your life for hers! We've been played (somehow), I need your help!" Aaaand ta da!!! I know it would avoid the fight but it's not my fault the reasons and motivations for it are stupid in the first place! That's why it didn't work, it stand on glass fragile pillars, that completely break down with the simplest questioning. Also just because he was shot at by a mad Batman (I'm sure that hurts a lot) he completely forgets about asking for help and explaining the situation and starts going forward and being visually invested in the fight, like Martha wasn't even incarcerated anymore!

Schuyler said that him not hanging his cape was a valid choice he made, but we didn't even see him making this choice, we just knew he did because he showed up completely dressed as Superman to save a Lois in distress. Why? Because the plot called for it, that wasn't a decision or choice made by him, that was a PLOT REACTION.

Gotham and Metropolis are now a mile apart, so shut up, you know what I meant. Yes, Superman, while in the other side of the globe, heard Lois (that he had no idea was in danger) screaming and reached her in 3 seconds, but he couldn't locate his mom even though he had 40 minutes to do it and KNEW that she was in danger. And somehow I'm the one that shut off my brain, me and everyone else who that this movie had a crap story (a LOT of people), definitely not you and a smaller portion of the DC fanbase that see this film as the new Hamlet. After all, "it's sooo deep and soooo complex with soooo many elements of symbolismmm" right?

He tried but Batman wouldn't listen. The film told him and the audience that Batman's not gonna listen to Superman. Why do think we see the numerous attempts Alfred makes to persuade Bruce from fighting Superman? If Bruce won't listen to the man he's trusted his entire life, why he listen to some stranger?
And Superman has killed, and I'm not talking about his first incarnation either. He has killed Zod numerous times. He's had to kill DD. He killed Brainiac and Imperiex. And he's had to kill Mister Mxyzptlk.
Him saving people does add to his character because he's doing this while also being scrutinized.
Martha wasn't in Metropolis. And considering that we don't a sonic boom, I assumed that Superman was already in Metropolis when Lois was falling. And if let's not forget the cut scene that Snyder told us in which Superman does try to find Martha, but expands his senses so far that he hears all of the crime that's being committed and undergoes sensory overload.
You can decide how you react to something you know....
it's when the main characters own choices are determined by reacting to things happening in the plot... like Bruces reason for hating superman is because he "saw" the fight with Zod and "superman has to fight Batman because lex has his mom taken hostage" or something... to me it's just a form of plot mechanism and there is no inherent flaw in telling a story this way... and lots of people say it's a cop out for "lazy writing"... well... that might be true if there was only one good way to write a movie... and we all know that's bullshit. But anyways On a side note there's a pretty good YouTube video that talks about how lex luthiers entire plan revolves around perception and the way the public sees these characters... it sorta goes along with what I'm saying... if I find it again I'll put it in a link to ya
A great birthday present would be leaving all his scenes in the film this time, Zack, instead of waiting for a vastly superior cut with them intact. ; )

he didn't have a say on the fact that he had to cut 30 min. But he did have a say on what scenes would be cut. So, yes, it definitely is his fault
The executives wanted more Batman, so Snyder had not choice but to cut some of Superman's screen time.

The is only 1 cut of MoS, which lead to known deleted scenes we will never see. Good luck with JLA though...

Some decry an early death of Superman, but I feel it was a brilliant way to work up to the iconic Superman known the world over.
Henry deserves better.
Happy Bday Supes/Cavill. IMO, one of the few beacons keeping the DCEU alive. MOS has to be the best outlet so far, as much as BvS had its iconic moments, and SS gave a few characters to care for (Diablo, Deadshot, Harley)
I think in the Bat obsessed culture there is (and I'm hands up guilty of being a Wayne obsessive) that WB really missed a trick in not expanding the DCEU though at least a sequel to MOS before BvS et al. the first Zod orientated, then the 2nd say some minor villain like parasite, while Kent reaches out to Martian Manhunter, Lantern etc, character driven.
Anyway, I'm pumped for Wonder Woman, and a bit unsure of JL. But hey, f**k it. Lets see how it flows.
Well, I think the public has yet to embrace those wonders, but hopefully they get there eventually
