Oscar-winner Michael Giacchino wants to score 'The Batman', and he probably will

Variant's Arris Quinones caught up with Oscar-winning composer Michael Giacchino at the premiere of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and asked if he'd like to write the music for a Batman movie. Giacchino is all for it!

"Yeah, it depends on who's making it and who's involved, but yeah I would love to. I love Batman," Giacchino replied. You can watch his answer in the video above.

I have great news for Michael Giacchino. Matt Reeves is directing the next Batman movie! Reeves and Giachino have worked together on Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, and are currently working together on War for the Planet of the Apes, which comes out in July.

Given the relationship between Giacchino and Reeves, I think it's very likely that he'll do the music for The Batman!

Giacchino is no stranger to the superhero genre either. He did the music for Marvel's Doctor Strange, the upcoming Spider-Man: Homecoming, and even the last Star Wars movie, Rogue One.

His score for the Kelvin timeline Star Trek films have been some my favorite blockbuster soundtracks of the past decade. Also his work for Up (Which he won his Oscar for) is a Disney/ Pixar all-timer.

    I don't know. "Your father would be proud" didn't resonate with me, but "Jyn Erso & Hope Suite" definitely caught my attention.

    I really wish the man had been given more time to work on his score. I enjoy it okay but compared to the rest of his work I found the Rogue One score pretty disappointing. The cue for title screen especially annoyed me because it sounded like a piece of music the How it Should Have Ended guys would have created to be just slightly off of the real thing.

      Omg Yes, that one main theme that kept popping up I found SO annoying, I thought it sounded so cheesy and just cheap?? I don't know how to word it. I can't put my finger on it. I feel like he really found his footing when it came to the pieces at the end of the film especially "Your father would be proud". But not enough to save the overall score.

Just came in to say this. I really loved his his Star Trek Scores. I didn't care for the Rogue One score all that much but he had some key gems in there too.

  Too bad a bout the script, as most other things worked in the film. Even if it has even less to do with Trek than the much better 1st and 3rd film.

    Lol I actually really liked Into Darkness. I think it's really fun. I don't really get the criticism against it. But maybe it's because I was never a Star Trek person. So these films were my first really legit sit down with the world.

His prior movie cred is a bit "meh" - but Dr Strange had an OK score, so I'd put myself as "cautiously optimistic" if he was selected.

You guys should listen to the "Your father would be proud score" & I know the rogue one score wasn't all good but that track has emotion and power to it, maybe Michael can bring that essence into Batman

Well his score for lost was exceptional. I've not heard much else from hm apart from Rogue One which was quite a forgettable film (although great fun in 4dx)

He's too vanilla. Give it to Christopher Drake. The man's put in plenty of hours doing amazing and diverse Batman scores for the animated films and games. He's earned a crack at a live-action Batman film!

His Arkham Origins score was exceptionally good. Really enjoyed that one. That opening theme would be a great live action Batman theme.

The man does get a lot of crappy jobs (working on a MCU film won't really give you much opportunity to show your skills as a composer, for sure), but just listen to his work on Pixar movies, for example.
I do think he wouldn't really be the best fit since Batman now has his theme music, and Giacchino's style has nothing to do with it. But frankly, they could just wipe that theme out of existence and I'd be fine with it. Make something new and with emotional weight. I think Giacchino could do it, given the opportunity and freedom.

  I think Drake is a fantastic composer. Sure, he's unproven for big movies, but his work never ceases to impress me. And not just that, he repeatedly is able to come up with novel and interesting Batman themes that suit the project. The gritty feel of Year One, the ethereal, mythic take of Gotham Knight, or the triumphant resurgence of a Batman in the shadow of a looming nuclear holocaust in the 80s. I'd just think he's earned a shot, and I would love to see what he would do on a grander scale.
  The thing that bothers me about Giacchino is that I've seen a lot of the films he's composed for, but I can't really identify the scores, nor was moved to find them. When I watched that 'Brothers in Arms' scene in FURY ROAD, dude the first thing I did when I got home was look for it. It struck me. My total indifference to Giacchino's work is a sign that I need something more than banal.

    I see your point. I can't really recall ever looking for a score of his. Let's just hope they get a good one for the movie, and one that fits the character, which is the most important thing.

I actually enjoyed the mess out of the Strange score, but it seems to go either way for folks. Rogue One had its moments, but overall, yeah, I did not like that score.

    There's definitely a kinship between parts of the two scores, although you see that with other composers, too. The medal ceremony in Williams' New Hope score definitely sounds like it would fit in his Superman work, as well. I think similar instrumentation accentuates it, too.
    But again, something like Lost demonstrates G's ability to get into other spaces, especially some Batman-suitable spaces, I think.

I like some of his track, rogue one had a bit of some good tracks, nothing stand out and Doctor Strange soundtrack was simply background noise, just like all Marvel films, I do love the Star Trek theme, it was very Star Trecky; but he is simply not good enough to compose a Batman film score. Remember John Williams and Hans Zimmer previously composed for Batman films. We need someone similar or an up and coming composer who can match those two legends, and that's not him.

What's wrong with Junkie? Junkie's work on Mad Max, 300 and BvS are outstanding.

  Mad Max may fit that particular movie... but you'd be hard pressed to call it beautiful music. 300 is as generic as always, and BvS was 90% Zimmer, and even then it wasn't particularly inventive. Imho, Junkie is terrible. The best comparison I can give you is well... junk food. Yes, junk food is insanely popular and satisfies most, but it's terrible when compared to *actual* food made by chef cooks. In the same way, Junkie's music is not exactly subtle or nuanced, and for those who actually still appreciate classical, romantic composition, it's borderline deafening.

Giacchino knows absolutely everything about the work and technique of composition of John Williams but does not have the talent of this one. He is not among my favorite compositors. I find him excessively anchored to the traditional symphonic orchestra and to the form of romantic composition. I think we'll all miss the duet HansZimmer/JunkieXL.

His work for "Rogue One" was good considering that he was incorporated late and, therefore, had little time to work on it.
